12 4-H Demonstrations March 23, :00 p.m. Allen County Extension Office When giving demonstrations dealing with food, please remember the following food safety and sanitation guidelines: Always wash hands with soap and water. Do not wear jewelry it can contain germs in the grooves. Tie long hair back in a pony tail. Wear a cap for shorter hair. Roll up long sleeves or wear short sleeves Keep cold food cold. Anything that normally stays in a refrigerator (example eggs, butter, sour cream, milk ) needs to stay cold in a cooler with ice. It is your responsibility to get a cooler, put ice in it, and put the refrigerated items in it to bring to the demonstration contest. Refrigerated items left at room temperature can build up bacteria you and your friends eat it it can cause illness. Have bags, bowls, etc. open before prior to starting your demonstration. When making something such as a cake and you will be taking the batter home, bring a plastic bowl with a snap lid. Also bring a cooler with ice and it should be safe to bake and eat when you get home. Bring a table cover. A table cloth or a large garbage bag will work. It is easy to drop food ingredients during your demonstration. When you pick up your table cover, the table is clean for the next person. While demonstrating, do not touch hair, nose, floor or other items that may be germ ridden. Do not wipe hands on clothing. Have paper towels handy for this. An apron is suggested if you have one. Reminders for all demonstrations: Practice! Practice! Practice! Make sure you know how to use all equipment ask a parent to help you. Arrange items in the order that you will use them. Before you start your demonstration, have plastic bags open, lids off bowls and containers, etc. Be prepared! Do not try to talk over the noise of running equipment (example Mixer, blender). Everyone is asked to bring a table cover such as a table cloth or a large garbage bag. This makes it quicker to clear and clean the table for the next person. Use regular poster board for posters. Use wide tipped, dark colored markers so the posters can be read from the back of the room. Talk loud and clear. Picture yourself as the teacher and your students (audience) know absolutely nothing about what you are talking about and it is your job to make a presentation where they will know everything when you are finished! If you are doing something that is potentially messy, you may want to bring an apron or cover shirt dress appropriately for the type of demonstration that you will be presenting. No live animals allowed for demonstrations. Parents it is ok to help 4-H ers with this project. Smile and have fun! You have so much knowledge to share and it is appreciated!????questions????
