Last month I wrote about the powerful storms that rolled through and this month I have yet another storm related casualty to report. Sadly we lost our big old hackle berry tree that was in front of the clubhouse. The tree had split during another storm and fell over onto the pavilion. Thankfully little damage was done to the structure. The remaining part of the tree however, had to be cut also as it was leaning dangerously over the clubhouse and could have caused significant damage if it were to fall also. Fortunately our insurance covered all of the expenses and the area is now cleaned up. Soon we will plant another tree that will provide shade and beauty to our facility once again. During the July monthly meeting the Helping Hand Scholarship Committee reported that the applications sent in by Caitlin Pursley and K. Massey were both exceptional. It was decided to award a scholarship to both applicants for their hard work. I want to personally congratulate both students and wish them success in their futures. I am happy to report that I finally have our club weather station repaired and back online once again. I moved all of the equipment inside the clubhouse and so far it has worked well. 2 July 2008 Page 2 % & % $ $' Howdy Y'all. Now that the tree is history, there is not much to talk about except that I really appreciate all the work that is going on at the field. Everything is basicly on auto-pilot. The grass is not really growing now that it is so hot. I want to thank Gary for doing my work for me with the tree do to my earlier engagements with VBS and then vacation with my family. Thanks Gary. To all that pitched in with the mowing, Thanks a lot! 3 July 2008 Page 3 *+*"' + '" Barnstormer Meeting Minutes for July 3, 2008 * Meeting called to order at 7:30 pm. * All officers present except Vice President Butch Nye. * June minutes were approved. * There were two guests present. * The tree in front of the club house split and a large portion fell on the pavilion. No serious damage to the structure. The entire tree has been removed including the stump. * Treasurer report: -Finances are in good shape. -Currently have 165 members. * Scouts are scheduled for July 12. Will have two trainer aircraft with buddy boxes for the scouts to fly. Time will be from 8-12 am. The field will be closed to all other flying. * Safety- Adam reported that there were no accidents since last meeting. He did point out that if you fly an aircraft with wheel pants that you should clean the grass out of the wheel pants. Grass can fill and pack the pants to the point that the wheel will not freely turn. Ground handling will be affected. * Old business- Scholarships-We had two very deserving applicants. The scholarship selection committee decided to award a scholarship to both applicants. Congratulations to Caitlin Pursley and Kevan Massey. * New Members Cole DeLester J.W. 7 July 2008 Page 7 My first exposure to the T-28 Trojan was last Thanksgiving at my mom s house. I was talking about planes with my son-in-law and brother-in-law (a frequent occurrence). My son-in-law mentioned a new RTF that ParkZone had released, the T-28 Trojan. I was unfamiliar with the plane that the Navy and Marines used to train their pilots from the 1950 s until the early 1980 s. We pulled it up on the Internet and I was hooked. I loved the looks of the plane. However, I was oblivious to the fact that my brother-in-law had begun scheming for all three of us to get one of these planes for Christmas God bless him! We took our Trojans to a local park the day after Christmas and shot the following picture. Since my very first plane was a park flyer (the HobbyZone Super Cub), I knew a little bit about park fliers, however I was completely unprepared for this plane. My Super Cub is a nice slow flier, but it does not handle the wind at all, mainly because it is very light and underpowered. However, this plane has plenty of power. It comes with a 480 brushless outrunner electric motor, which is plenty powerful for this plane. It can literally take off in about 20 feet of space! My son-in-law (the best pilot of the three of us) can easily do knife edge and inverted flight with the model. I am currently on a buddy box on a glow trainer, however, I can fly this model on my own. It is an extremely smooth flying airplane and it is very versatile, easy enough for someone with basic flying experience, but also will do acrobatic maneuvers. The current issue of Model Aviation (page 80) shows a retired crop duster that took three of these models and attached them together using carbon-fiber rod, glue and safety wire so that he can fly all three planes at the same time in formation. Not a bad idea. The only problem I have found in flying this plane is that it does not taxi well, mainly due to the light weight of the model and the small wheels that come with the plane. It tends to nose over on long taxis back to you, so I normally try to land fairly close to avoid a long taxi back (or a long walk out to pick up the plane). Another plus is that the airplane comes ready to fly. From box to in the air can be as little as one hour. The plane is very easy to assemble and can be done in as little as 15 minutes, however the included 1800 mah lipo battery takes about an hour to charge on the included charger. It also comes complete with a 4 channel radio (many park fliers only come with a 3 channel). For a price of between $200 - $250, this makes it relatively simple to get into electric flight with a pretty stable performing airplane. I ve read that the 25 amp ESC can be a problem on these planes, but so far I have not experienced that with my plane. I do however plan to buy a spare just in case. I ve also heard that there can be problems with the receiver, but again I have not experienced that problem, partially because I recently upgraded the receiver so that I can fly it with my Futaba spread spectrum radio. If you are looking to get into electric flight at a reasonable cost, or if you are looking for a decent 2nd airplane, I would highly recommend the Trojan. I love flying this plane and it gets a lot of compliments at the airfield.
