Tena koutou e te whanau, he mihi nui kia koutou katoa Dear Parents, Whānau and Caregivers This afternoon we have our first Farmers Market of the year. This is always a fun and busy event, which raises money for the sustainability projects that happen in school. It also provides an authentic context for Tuakana Teina activities to happen, with many of our older classes teaming up with their buddy class to make, grow, invent items for the Market. The market will take place on the middle court from 3pm onwards.
2 The Arts Festival Exhibition opens on Tuesday night at 5pm. All the wonderful art the children have produced will be on display and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The artwork will then stay up until Thursday lunchtime to give everyone the chance to enjoy it. Please see the PTA information further down in this newsletter about the opportunity to purchase cards, diaries and calendars that showcase your child s art. This is the last newsletter for Term 3. We wish you all a restful and relaxing holiday with your whānau and look forward to seeing you all back safely for Term 4. 4 This week, three tramps up to the Pinnacles Hut have taken place. This is an opportunity we offer to our Year 7 students each year, in order to help develop both leadership skills and independence. Our thanks to the staff who volunteer to offer our students the opportunity to experience our natural environment. Here is Anton Van Aken s report about the trip on Monday and Tuesday: On Monday the 17th we went on the Pinnacles Tramp, in the Coromandel. We drove for about 2 hours through some very windy roads to begin our trek. The first day had heaps of uphills and stairs that were carved out of rock. Some of the steps were about 2 foot high. We reached the hut at 3pm. We were happy, exhausted and very keen to take our shoes off. After a short break we climbed the rest of the way to the top of the mountain. We felt shocked by the view you could see 360 degrees for many many kilometres. That night we cooked dinner, played cards and went to sleep in the hut dorm rooms. In the morning we had our breakfast of delicious porridge and began our trek back down. This time we took the slippery Billy Goat Trail (it was raining the whole time). We had a river crossing to finish (Rose, the teacher, fell in). It was a tiring, but awesome and beautiful experience. We had lots of laughs. Balmoral Drum Lessons We are very excited to have Alistair Deverick starting this term as our new drum teacher. Alistair has a glowing musical career so far and also a ton of teaching experience too. Some highlights are: - Drummer for Tim Finn, Neil Finn, Anika Moa and Lawrence Arabia (amongst many more) - Producer and Songwriter for electro-pop group Boycrush
5 - Itinerant Drum Teacher at Avondale College,Green Bay High School, Sacred Heart College, Pakuranga College,James Cook High School, Epsom Girls Grammar School and Aorere College - Graduated from Auckland University with a BMus (Jazz) Here s a video of Alistair playing with one of NZ s favourite son s, Neil Finn, joined by Pearl Jam s frontman, Eddie Vedder!! If interested in lessons for your child please contact Alistair directly on alistairdeverick@gmail.com Absenteeism Please let the office know before 9:15am if your child is going to be away from school due to sickness or travel. All un-notified absences result in a text message being sent to query the student s whereabouts. Caregivers can reply to these texts, but it reduces unnecessary work if the office doesn t have to send them in the first place. We have had a lot of unexplained absences lately, which is proving disruptive to teachers and administrators who have to chase up parents for reasons for students being away. Unexplained absences automatically change to a truant mark with the Ministry, so it is important that you let the office know as early as possible if your child is going to be absent the office can then put the correct code on the electronic roll. Intermediate News From Room 5 Room 5 Geometry Project by Rubie and Sofie For our maths project we are making 3 dimensional geometric towns out of card. We had to include a range of things such as a rectangular gym, a tetrahedron movie theatre and a post office made out of a cylinder and a cone. Even though we are still making them we can see into the future and we know they will be awesome. We had to draw the base of our town and make sure we had these specific formalities; 2 parallel roads, 2 perpendicular roads, plus include streets that had an obtuse and an acute angle. These were not as difficult to include as spacing where they were going to be placed. Here are some pictures of our projects midway through:
6 Mathex Report Recently, our Mathex teams competed in the Auckland-wide Mathex tournament. All of the teams did exceedingly well, with one of our Year 8 teams, made up of Emil, Liam, Jay and Raaga coming second overall. Congratulations to them on this very impressive feat. Here is a report from Emil and Liam: On Thursday the of 22nd August, Balmoral Intermediate sent 4 teams to the Mathex competition in the Barfoot and Thompson Arena in Kohimarama. We sent 2 Year 8 and 2 Year 7 teams. The Year 8 A team came 2nd, the Year 8 B and the Year 7 A and B teams came in the top 20. The event was high tempo and the Year 8 A team were behind many teams at early stages. However, later they managed to pull off a remarkable comeback and finished with a respectable 2nd place. The event was adrenaline packed and the teams performed well. Many recognised student and classmates from earlier years, which made the competition even more intense. The students greatly enjoyed the event and felt they did Balmoral proud. Our Mathex teams (minus 2 Felixes and 1 Vanya!)
