1 Yegua Nation Monthly Digest Think It, Believe It, Achieve It! April, 2017 THIS MONTH S TOP STORIES Jose Gonzales placed 6th in the UIL Academic meet that was held on April 8th in Corpus Christi. Way to go Jose!

2 Students conducted their first student-led parent conferences on April 10th, thank you to all the staff and parents for helping to make these conferences a huge success! Congratulations to SHS Tennis, 5 students made it to Regional Qualifiers after competing on April 10th. Congratulations to the Somerville High School Band for receiving first division ratings from all six judges at the UIL Region 18/26 Band Concert & Sightreading Contest held on April 12th, in Bastrop! Several students participated in the BMSS Field Day in Cameron on April 20th, thank you to all the student volunteers that made it a special day! Congratulations to 9 students, Cabrini Clayton, Lindsey Dekneef, Krishna McGowen, Jose Gonzales, Le Andrew Watson, Lagabriel Lister, Cassius Conway, Kevin Miles, and Dalton Sparks, made it to the Regional track meet in Corpus Christi on April 28th. Good luck to you all! Congratulations to the girls softball team for making it to the first round playoffs! Their game is scheduled on April 27th in Crosby against Sabine Pass at 6:30, we wish them luck! Thanks goes out to students and teachers for all your hard work, we received our results for 5th and 8th grade STAAR test in Reading and Math and we want to congratulate Mrs. Coronado and all the 5th graders for scoring an 86% passing rate in 5th math! Below is the final layout of the new elementary and we break ground on April 27th at the baseball field at 10 a.m. Please come out to celebrate this joyous occasion! RELAY for Life will be hosted this Friday at the Somerville HS track starting at 7 p.m., come out and join our local chapter of American Cancer Society in honoring cancer survivors and to remember and honor those who have lost their life to cancer. Early voting started on Monday, April 24th at the City Hall.

4 New Elementary School Plans Above

5 Yegua Teacher News The 4th Graders are still wearing their kid power bands to help UNICEF. All of the teams participating helped UNICEF unlock one million packets of RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food) at the end of March. Lifesaving packets are being delivered right now to South Sudan, where famine was recently declared. Ten thousand children in South Sudan will have a healthier future because our students unlocked their inner heroes and chose to get active. Our students are showing the world that everyday actions can make a difference!

6 APRIL IS POETRY MONTH!! All of the 4th graders have been decorating the halls with various types of poetry: Prepositional Phrase, Five Senses, Makes-Me-Think-Of, Haiku, and Cinquain Poems.Here are just a sample of the many wonderful poems.

7 4th Graders were fortunate enough to be the recipient of a Target grant that was used to experience some of our Texas history. We used the grant money to travel to San Antonio and visit the Alamo. We walked where Crockett, Bowie, Travis, and many other men walked who fought for Texas independence in This trip was extraordinary because the students not only experienced walking on the actual battlegrounds and visiting the Mission, but they could also answer the questions our tour guide was asking about the Alamo. 8 4th graders created a mural in our hallway of the history behind the Alamo, including when Sam Houston s army won the quick battle at San Jacinto by defeating Santa Anna.
