CIS Times Staff Garden & Kitchen News - Laura Pre-K/K News - Ethan 1/2 Class News - Tiffany 3-5 Class News/Student Council - Stephen and Becca Student of the Month - Braeden In the Spotlight - Aaron Comics & Activities - Elias and Isabelle (This is not posted on our online version) Recipe of the Month By; Laura Garden This year in the garden we had lots of fruits and vegetables. Lately, we ve been harvesting carrots and potatoes. The greenhouse has been doing well and the plants inside are getting water every couple of days. We have flowers and tomatoes in the green house. Down by the Rec Center we had lovely watermelon and pumpkins. They have been picked now! We had 2 watermelons and 20 squashes. So, as you can see, we had plenty of fruits and vegetables in our gardens before harvest time.

Kitchen This year Laura Summa is cooking up great things like hot dogs, chicken pot pie and barley soup, but the number one thing is pizza. There s cheese pizza, pepperoni pizza or veggie pizza. Through the years on Fridays we have been having pizza. We all love it and, if you re wondering how Laura makes her pizza so good, she puts in mozzarella cheese, romano cheese and double pepporoni. For the veggie pizza, there is onion, broccoli, green peppers, black olives and fresh garlic. Recipe of the Month Elias, a student in are school, has given one of his recipes for Graveyard Pops, a nice Halloween treat. If you want to you can make it all at home. Use this recipe to make one of the best Halloween popsicles.trust me! They re great! If you like chocolate milk and gummy worms morphed together into a popsicle, then you ll like graveyard pops!! Gather all the materials below; 5 tablespoons of instant breakfast powder. One cup of milk. 1 pinch of sugar 1 popsicle stick 3 gummy worms.

Makes only one popsicle. Procedure: 1. First pour the milk into the cup. 2.Then put in the instant breakfast powder. Stir mixture until brown. 3.Now add the sugar. Stir for about 5 seconds. 4. Add gummy worms. 5.After that place the popsicle stick in the cup. 5.Put it in the freezer overnite. Enjoy!!! Now you know how to make one of the best Halloween sensations! 1/2 Classroom News by Tiffany Hi! My name is Tiffany and I am reporting about the K-2 classroom!! The teachers in that room are Mrs. Hoidal, Mrs. Earnest, Mrs. White and Mrs. Trower. I visited the classroom when they were doing morning calendar. Calendar is when the classroom gathers at the rug and does their jobs for the week. The different jobs are: Public Relations, Date Keeper, Accountant, Banker, Meteorologist, Custodian and Secretary. I asked the group what they thought was the most important job. They explained that Public Relations is the most important because that person does the lunch count, attendance, leads the lines and relays messages to the office as a classroom representative. Jenna told me that each morning they also do The Pledge and a morning greeting. The choices for the greeting are a choo-choo train, telephone, handshake, song or milking a cow. Milking a cow is simply done by groups of two. One person laces their fingers together and stretches their hands and arms outward and puts their thumbs down and the partner pulls the thumbs down gently like they re milking a cow and says, Good Morning. (It is good for anyone!) Calendar time also covers a lot of learning. Students practice patterning, place value, days of school, money, time, and temperature. They are also asked to read and correct the morning message which helps them with reading, writing, phonics and parts of speech. Calendar time is also the time when homework and Daily Updates are checked. If the

students do their homework and the parents sign their Updates they get a sticker! Once the chart is filled up they can choose from a prize box. It is extremely busy in the morning but their hard work is paying off!!! Pre-K/K Class News By Ethan When I walked into the Pre-K/K room, Rohan, Zackary and Cooper were playing a cool Exchange game that included counting up ones, tens, hundreds and even thousands! The game is played by player one rolling the blue one die. Then the banker gives them the number of one pellets they rolled and now it is the other player s turn. The class was celebrating Columbus Day with games and pictures. When the kids have free time they can choose a work or fun activity. There is an endless amount of works in the pre-k room and they all change in the different seasons. The class is also studying Will (Mister) Rogers by talking about his life and listening to his famous music, It s Such a Good Feeling. The Pre-K/K Class has also been doing yoga with the help of Mrs. Sullivan. With Halloween coming up, the kids (and Mrs. Nancy) have created many crafts. My favorite are ghosts made out of handprints! I have gone into the room many times to get the kid s favorite works. Mrs. Nancy tells me Everybody s favorites change by the week. These are probably the most recent:

Caleb- All of them! Cooper- Writing a story. Rohan- Building a tower with blocks. Zackary- Making a book. Student Council News And 3-5 News By Becca and Stephen On October 7, 2010 the Student Council from our school announced some new school rules. They are: 1. Treat people the way you want to be treated 2. Mind your manners at snack and lunch time 3. Respect people and property 4. No quitting or joining in the middle of a game 5. Everybody has to follow the rules 6. No tattling 7. No video games in school 8. No exceptions We have a new policy. It is the tattle turtle! It is a green stuffed turtle, with a red vest, a tan shell, and is from build-a-bear. On the shell is a zipper

that you open and put the tattle inside. The purpose of the tattle turtle is to make sure that we avoid having students came to teachers every few seconds to tattle. We also have a school fundraiser box. It is where a kid or adult writes an idea for a fundraiser on a sticky note and puts it in the box. We already have some even though it has only been out for a day. We recently decided that we are going to do many fundraisers this year. The student council chose the fundraisers by First they took the ideas out of the fundraiser box. Next they looked at them and discussed the ideas. Finally they chose the best one to bring to vote on which to do first. We decided that the school will do Candy Grams first. We hope they will be fun and successful. They are: 1. Candy Grams 2. Bake sale 3. Cookbook 4. Note cards This month the 3-5 Class will be working on a project where the kids will interview people with different jobs on the water. So far we have interviewed Jonathan Komlosy, Nick Stefanillo, Stephanie Martin, Mac Passano, Sherman Rich. Isabelle Boisvert interviewed Jonathan Komlosy, Tiffany Calder interviewed Stephanie Martin, Laura Hamilton interviewed Nick Stefanillo, Elias Rich interviewed Mac Passano, and Braeden Rich interviewed Sherman Rich. We still have to interview Justin Doughty, Clair Ross, Lindy Smith, and Stephen Todd. We will have a lot of fun with this project! Just recently Chewonki came and visited our school. They did two programs. One program was for the whole school. The other was only for 3-5. The program for the whole school was on animal adaptations. The program for 3-5 was on biomes. The presentations were excellent. They brought in awesome animals. They brought in a Box Turtle, a Blanding s Turtle, an African Giant Millipede, a Tarantula, a Bearded Dragon, and a Corn

Snake. They brought more things like skin of animals and many other interesting items. We had lots of fun with this as you can see. We hope they will visit our school again. This is the corn snake Chewonki brought to the school.! Becca Student of the Month By Braeden Becca is a new 5th grade student at Chebeague Island School. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia and moved to Peach Tree City, Georgia with her family. Her family moved to Chebeague Island this fall because they liked Maine, wanted to move to a rural area and they liked our school. She was chosen to be the Student of the Month because she adjusted to the school well as a new student and helps everyone out at our school. She likes to laugh and is very kind to others. Although she has not played soccer since she was four, Becca likes to play soccer after school with all the kids from our school. She s really good at math and also enjoys reading. Becca loves horses and actually took horseback riding lessons in Georgia.

Becca has two dogs one named lulu and the other named Toby. She was born on May 8, 2000 and her birthday is in the school year. Her favorite sport is soccer. Her favorite movie is The Long Shot. Her favorite food is anything with sugar. Her favorite book is A Horse of Her Own. Her favorite color is green and her favorite activity is horseback riding. WE ARE HAVE HER IN VERY LUCKY TO THE SCHOOL!

By Aaron Belesca In the Spotlight I interviewed Chris Rich for In the Spotlight. I decided to interview Chris because he brings in a lot of creatures for our touch tank. He told me that he caught the lobster that he put in our touch tank on the fifteenth of October. It is very soft shelled and about twelve inches long with claws and tail fully extended! I asked him if he could tell me what the most interesting things he ever caught were. He said that it was a trigger fish and that once and a while a lobsterman catches one! Another cool thing that he told me about is a catching a dead raccoon. He explained how it got in the trap. The tides were really high and they pulled his trap up and the raccoon climbed in and ate the bait and was too late getting out. The tide brought the trap back out and drowned the raccoon. It was found a short while later.
