1 BALMAIN ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS BRIEFING NOTE This note contains important information for those competing at the Inner City Zone Championships Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th December Congratulations on your selection in the Balmain team for the upcoming Inner City Zone Championships. Our team of 285 athletes will compete against athletes from the Eastern Suburbs, South Eastern, Randwick- Botany, Canterbury, Inner West and Tiger West clubs. All athletes from the u7s to u17s were able to enter what is the biggest representative event on our calendar. Zone is run by the clubs and it requires many volunteers to fill various roles throughout the day, just like our usual club competition on King George Oval. Balmain runs all Long Jump events so if you are doing Long Jump you will be helping out. Everyone else will be required to undertake one duty of 45-60min. Please follow the link provided in your selection to choose which duty you would prefer to underatake. It is via Zone that athletes can qualify for the Regional Championships. The first 6 placegetters in our Zone automatically progress, along with the 4 next best qualifiers across the combined Inner City and Southern Metropolitan Zones. U7 athletes do not progress past Zone. Please notify us now if FOR ANY REASON you will be unable to compete. There are athletes who want to compete in more events and we can field a substitute if we know about it THIS WEEK. This is obviously much better for our kids than a vacant space in a race that someone could have filled. It also helps to maximise our point score to defend our title as Overall Zone Champion Club. If you have any questions or difficulties on the day speak to one of the team managers. 2 ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS KEY INFORMATION Venue E.S. Marks Athletics Field is situated on Boronia Street, off Anzac Parade, Kensington NSW 2033 When Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th December 2018 E.S. Marks is an all-weather facility so competition will take place no matter what the weather. The Zone Carnival runs to a program, the draft is on pages 6, 7 & 8. The final program will be circulated as soon as it is made available to us. Please be conservative in your estimates and aim to arrive in plenty of time Parking There is NO Stadium Parking. You will need to park in the nearby residential streets. Parking will be especially hard this year with Light Rail works on Anzac Parade. Please allow an extra minutes to find a park and walk to the venue. When you reach the venue Find the Balmain contingent in the stand. Our banners and club colours should be very visible. We will have a table set-up. Please register for the day so we know you have arrived and collect your team t-shirt, if you haven t already got it. We will also perform an initial uniform check (see page 3 for uniform details) Competition start time Gates open each day at 7:30am First Call for track events 8am; First race 8.30am First call for field events is at 8am. First events commence at 8.30am. For the first field events of the day athletes should go directly to the event area. Other Notes Re Order of Events Depending upon numbers of entrants some events may be run as straight finals, and some age groups may be combined into one race or event. Athletes will place separately in their own age groups. This is more likely in the Senior (13+) events and in the walks. It may also happen in field events where 2+ age groups may throw/jump together, but again results will remain separate. Please read the final program carefully to see if this is happening for your events! Qualifying from a heat to a final A set number will qualify from each heat: 4+ Heats: 1st from each heat plus next fastest times to fill 8 lanes go to final 3 Heats: 1st, 2nd from each heat plus next 2 fastest times across all heats go to final 2 Heats: 1st, 2nd, 3rd from each heat plus next 2 fastest times in all heats go to final Field Events Each athlete will be allowed a minimum of 3 attempts. The top 8 athletes in each event will be given a further 3 attempts. If there are less than 8 athletes competing, all athletes will receive 6 attempts. Event Clashes Track events take precedence over field events. A competitor must not leave their field event without reporting to the Chief Judge. The Chief Judge will send competitor/s to marshaling for the track event on the 2nd call for that event. Where possible the athlete will complete 3 trials in the field event before leaving. The athlete must return immediately to their field event once the track event is complete.
3 UNIFORM GUIDE Full club uniform must be worn by all athletes including Coles sponsors patch, age patch and registration number on the front of the uniform. This will be policed by officials and failure to comply can see athletes removed from events. Athletes DO NOT compete in their representative t -shirts. The Club uniform consists of a black and gold singlet or crop top with black shorts. This uniform is worn at all levels of competition and must have the appropriate cloth registration numbers sewn or pinned on as in the picture to the left Officials can, and do, remove or disqualify athletes from events if they do not fully conform to the uniform code. Read below for more detail Parent assistance at the Zone Championships is mandatory. Zone is entirely run by volunteers. Balmain runs all Long Jump events and provides a Track Umpire and Timekeeper. Parental assistance is necessary for these events to run. See duty roster link in accompanying this newsletter to nominate for your long jump, umpire or timekeeping role. Can I wear SKINS? Athletes can wear compression pants of any colour UNDERNEATH black shorts. Girls may wear compression pants as an outer garment (ie no shorts over the top) as long as they are black. Boys can only wear them UNDERNEATH their shorts. REGISTRATION NUMBER, SPONSOR & AGE PATCH PLACEMENT... & SHOES On the singlet front: sew or pin Coles sponsor s patch (top RIGHT from athlete s view), athlete registration number with red border visible & age patch (top LEFT). See pic top left of this page. These will all fit on a standard singlet. For crop tops, the rego number and Coles patch will fit on the top front but the age patch may not and should be placed on the FRONT LEFT leg of the shorts. Shorts must be black. Shoes are compulsory. Spike shoes MUST NOT be worn in any U7 - U10 event. Competitors in the U11s may wear spikes In all cases, the compression in events run entirely in lanes, javelin, long jump, triple jump pants must remain above the and high jump. Competitors in the U12 to U17s may wear spikes in events run entirely in lanes, long jump, triple jump, knee. high jump, javelin, 800m, 1500m & 3km. At no time can competitors wear spiked shoes with the spikes removed. TEAM MANAGERS WILL HAVE COLES PATCHES & Maximum spike length is 7mm for Track & 9mm for Jumps AGE PATCHES IF NEEDED
4 ZONE HINTS AND TIPS Your first Zone Carnival can be a bit daunting. Check out our top tips for making the experience run as smoothly as possible. 1. Remember Club Team Managers are there to help but you need to be responsible for your child. The Club will have 3 team managers at each day of the Zone Carnival. (See front page for their contact details.) They will have many duties and will not be able to wrangle individual athletes. Please make sure you check the final program for event schedules & arrive at the stadium in plenty of time. Look for our BLAC banners and mass of Rep T-shirts to find us 2. Listen out for marshaling calls & make sure you know where your event is being marshaled. Each event will be called twice. When an event is called, participants should go to the marshaling area for that event. Track and field events normally, but not always, have separate marshaling areas so check where your event marshaling area is when you arrive. Athletes go directly to the competition area for the first field events of the day only, so listen carefully to the announcer. If you miss the marshaling call, you will miss your event as the Championships are run strictly to a program. 3. Pack supplies of food & drink, including lots of water. Canteen facilities are varied, so pack some food/snacks and plenty of water. Athletes can take water bottles with them to field events, but not normally to track events. If it s very hot, pack some frozen cloths and/or a water spray bottle to help kids stay cool between events. 4. If you have a clash of events, talk to the officials. Track takes precedence over field, so tell your field officials about the clash and they will work to ensure you get to both events. At Zone if you have a clash it s likely someone else in your event will too, so the officials are used to sorting this out. 5. Take something to do in the inevitable downtime. Like all carnivals, Zone can be a long day. Supporting their team mates and playing with friends will keep the kids amused while they wait for their events, but it s worth packing a book or a game for the (dare I say it) dull bits :). For parents, too! 6. Make sure your uniform fully conforms to regulations. At Club competition we don t strictly enforce the Little Athletics uniform code, but at inter-club carnivals this is strongly policed. Marshalls can, and do, remove athletes from an event if they are not wearing correct uniform. This is obviously distressing for the athletes and their parents. To avoid issues, before you leave for ES Marks, check your uniform fully conforms. Parent helpers need to wear closed in shoes for your rostered duty.and take a hat. Even if there is shade in the stands there is rarely any on the track or at Long Jump
