1 OJH LINX (Lumberjack Information Network exchange) Good afternoon OJH parents: 11/7/14 We ve had a quick and busy week at OJH this week. This past Tuesday afternoon, the OJH Staff continued their undefeated football record against the 8 th Grade Football Team. The final result a victory for the good guys! Congratulations to the 8 th grade team for playing a very good game and hopefully everyone had a great time. Thanks to all of the students, parents, and staff who came out to cheer and watch the competition. Please be aware that next Thursday, 11/13, we will be on a special schedule. During a extra-extended 3 rd period, our students will be treated to a cutting from the upcoming OHS Fall Play. Following the 20-minute cutting, our students will participate in another Take 5 activity. To fit in all of these special activities, our lunch schedule will be adjusted. Dan Weckstein OHS BAND FRUIT SALE IN FULL SWING The Oakwood High School Band's annual fruit sale is in full swing and runs through November 7 (today). The fresh, high- quality fruits are Florida's finest citrus and Indian River varieties and the band is also offering apples, pineapples, pears, cheesecakes and pies. The fruit arrives for home delivery on Dec. 6 in time for holiday giving and enjoyment. In addition to helping the students raise funds for their spring trip to Cedar Point, the sale supports purchases and maintenance of instruments, band uniforms and other items vital to the band's growth. To order fruit and/or dessert online go to (online order deadline = 11/16)or send an to Fruit Sale manager, Robin Crum at robinediecrum@hotmail.com or call OMUN Any 7th or 8th grader who is interested in OMUN - Ohio Model United Nations - should come to an informational meeting in Mrs. Fiore's room on Monday, November 10th at lunch. OMUN is a student-led team challenge in which students research one of the 193 UN countries. Teams then propose a resolution for a problem the country faces, design costumes and create talent showcases based on their country's culture. If

2 your child has an interest in research, teamwork and world problems, and if your child is available during Mondays at lunch from now until the end of March, please encourage him/her to attend Monday's lunch meeting. WHAT S HAPPENING IN 7TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES - LEGACIES OF ISLAM 7th Grade Social Studies participated in a two-day examination of the Islamic Achievements. Ask your child which achievement he/she believes is the most significant. (See pictures below)

3 WHAT S HAPPENING IN STUDENT COUNCIL FROM MICHAEL O HARA OJHS 8TH GRADE STUDENT COUNCIL The Oakwood Junior High student council held a dance for all junior high students which was held from 7:009:00 in the West Gym. The dance was deemed a neon dance so students who attended were able to express themselves through neon clothing and also brought festive glow sticks. The kings and queens of the dance were 8th graders Jack Henry and Katie Hapgood and 7th graders AJ Lewandowski and Elizabeth Vaughn. FROM THE COUNSELOR Lumberjack Leaders Special Wish/Ronald McDonald Fundraiser The Lumberjack Leaders and the rest of the Junior High have been having lots of fun playing and watching artillery at lunch in the Pit while raising money for Special Wish and The Ronald McDonald House. The fundraiser has already topped the $1400 mark! The 3rd Period Take 5 groups are having a pop-top competition. Help your child s class win a pizza party. The fundraiser continues until Thanksgiving. You can help support one or both of these organizations by making a financial or pop tab donation today or join the action at lunchtime. WASHINGTON DC TRIP PARENT MEETING Attention parents of 8th graders who are attending the Washington, D.C. trip, there is a parent meeting at 7 p.m. on November 10th in the high school cafeteria. 4 OAKWOOD ARTS BRIDGE FUNDRAISER We have a new fundraising opportunity that costs you nothing. Kroger has a Community Awards Program similar to Dorothy Lane Market s. All you need to do is register your Kroger Plus swipe card with the Oakwood Arts Bridge NPO# 43824, and Oakwood Arts Bridge will receive a percentage of all your purchases at Kroger. This does not cost you anything to participate, nor does it take away from the coupons, gas credits, and such you currently use. Here are the instructions for registering in the Kroger Community Rewards Program: Simply encourage your members to register online at krogercommunityrewards.com Be sure to have your Kroger Plus card handy and register your card with your organization after you sign up. If a member does not yet have a Kroger Plus card, please let him/her know that they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger. Click on Sign In/Register Most participants are new online customers, so they must click on SIGN UP TODAY in the New Customer? box. Sign up for a Kroger Rewards Account by entering zip code, clicking on favorite store, entering your address and creating a password, agreeing to the terms and conditions You will then get a message to check your inbox and click on the link within the body of the . Click on My Account and use your address and password to proceed to the next step. Click on Edit Kroger Community Rewards information and input your Kroger Plus card number. Update or confirm your information. Enter NPO number or Oakwood Arts Bridge, select organization from list, and click on confirm. To verify you are enrolled correctly, you will see your organization s name on the right side of your information page. REMEMBER, purchases will not count for your group until after your member(s) register their card(s). Do you use your phone number at the register? Call , select option 4 to get your Kroger Plus card number. Members must swipe their registered Kroger Plus card or use the phone number that is related to their registered Kroger Plus card when shopping for each purchase to count. I just signed up and it didn t take more than a couple of minutes. If you have questions about this program or what Oakwood Arts Bridge does in our community, please me and I will happy to answer them. Thank you so much for your support of the arts in our community, Leigh Ann Fulford, President Oakwood Arts Bridge, MAKE-UP WORK It s getting to be that time of year for colds and flu. If your child is out sick and is concerned about making up the work, the policy for collecting make-up work is as follows. After three or more days out sick, work can be collected for pick up by either contacting teachers via or contacting Mrs. Roeckner in the OJH Office. If your child is out less than three days, we ask that they do what they can by checking the teachers websites. Students will be able to catch up with everything else when they return to school. PARKING AT OJH AND OHS As you are aware, all of our parking spaces around the building are reserved spots for staff members. (There are a few handicapped spots available as well.) Please be certain to refrain from parking in any parking spots

5 around the building from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. We do have several staff members that travel around the district from time to time, so just because a spot happens to be open we still ask that you do not park in it because someone will be returning to it. You may park on the curbside of Schantz Avenue behind the OJH building where the school vans are parked (avoid the handicap space, fire hydrants, and crosswalks) and come into the OJH Office for a parking pass to put on your dash so you will not get a ticket. OJH PARENT/PRINCIPAL GATHERING The Parent/Principal Gathering is a forum for parents, teachers, and administrators to discuss historic, current and future issues affecting Oakwood Junior High School. Items involving specific individuals will not be discussed in this forum. All parents are invited and welcome to attend these gatherings. Please join us when you can. This year we will have four gatherings. Two will be coffees at 9:00 a.m. and two will begin at noon. Boys basketball tryouts are November 7, 8, and 10. Wrestling begins on Monday, November 17. Times and locations are on the OJH athletic website. Students need to have a physical on file with the school and an emergency medical form turned in to the coach in order to participate. All junior high boys interested in playing lacrosse for Oakwood this spring will need to have the club fee of $ to the Athletic Office by November 14, If you would like more information or have further questions about boys' junior high lacrosse, please contact Joy Manning at or manning.joy@oakwoodschools.org.
