5 Shot of the Night 2018 Sequel By Larry Valentine It was appropriate the dark horse team was in the finals. The experienced/novice team of Colleen Williams and Bruce Unger parlayed a bit of luck and some good shots (SHOT OF THE NIGHT by Bruce) into a quarter-final- game before losing. The first game started at 7:00 pm with 10 teams fighting cue to cue. Finally, heavily favored grand champions, John A. and Steve S, after recovering from a first round loss, won the grand prize at 11:00 pm. Their win was reminiscent of the Broncos 98 wild card run. Second place team, Brian Dougherty and Larry V, cut the champions no slack with no balls left on the table. Actually, many games ended with both teams shooting the 8-ball. Thanks to Vickie U. and Gwenda V. for tending bar and taking care of the details. Those attending: Dave Ury, Dan McCarty, Steve Smith, John Ames, Larry Valentine, Gwenda Valentine, Tom Phillips, Brian Dougherty, Pam Dougherty, Tom Ury, Vickie Ury, Steve Bello, Brian Dahl, Jerry Fox, Paul Hasty, Jimmy Linn, Delbert Marcum, Bobbie Mesite, Jim Mesite, Bruce Unger, Colleen Williams, John Williams, Mike Walker. 7 Get to Know Your Fellow Members An Interview with John and Colleen Williams by Diana Dittman How long have you been a CSCC member? Since November of 2014 What Corvette(s) do you currently own? Currently own a 2007 Monterey Red convertible. In the past they have owned a 1984 coupe, a 1992 coupe, and a 2000 convertible. Marital Status? Married for 39 years their children (son and daughter) went to the Air Force Academy. Their son graduated in 2007 and their daughter in (They were very humble about the fact that both of their kids graduated from the AFA. I, however, am extremely impressed!) Anyway, they would travel back and forth from Florida to Colorado and they fell in love with Colorado, the mountains, and clean air. They decided to retire here because it was approximately half way between where their son and daughter was stationed (Seattle and Arizona). Employment? John retired as a fire fighter after 40 years of service. He worked in Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Orlando (which included Disney World). Colleen is a retired math teacher. She taught for 30 years at elementary, middle school, and high school levels. How did you meet? While Colleen was going to college, she worked as a dispatcher for the sheriff s office. John was a fire fighter and Colleen dispatched an emergency 911 call that John and his crew responded too. After the call, John wanted to meet Colleen. He had friends that knew her so they set up a blind date for the two of them. Well, they had quite the rocky start. Their first date was to play tennis. John didn t even own a tennis racket so he wasn t very good at all. Colleen said she didn t really like him at first and thought, well he doesn t even own a tennis racket! (and yes she beat him playing tennis). But they did have a second date. On their second date they went to the movies where John proceeded to drop his popcorn all over the aisle. (Maybe he was nervous!). Alas, there was a third date where this time at the movies Colleen dropped her popcorn all over. Whew, I m sensing a trend here. But love prevailed and they ended up dating for 5 months and then tied the knot. We did have a good laugh while they were telling me the story though. Where are you from? John was born in Albuquerque (he was an Army brat). They lived in California, Germany twice, and Kentucky twice. When his Dad retired from the service, the family moved to Florida. Colleen was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale. The reason they moved to Colorado is because both of Kids? They have a son who is stationed in Seattle. He is a C17 pilot in the Air Force. He is engaged to marry this July. His fiancé is also a C17 pilot. Their daughter is currently stationed in Seoul, Korea. She is a Captain (Air Force) and is in charge of evacuations should there be a need to evacuate. Favorite club activity? They enjoy the rallies and social activities. Hobbies? They like to golf, go hiking, 4-wheeling, kayaking, fishing, and they love to travel. What is the best vacation you ever took? Some of their travels have taken them to Japan, the Baltics, Iceland, Ireland, Korea (to visit their daughter). They were in Korea over Christmas and said it was VERY cold. They also like to go on cruises and they have a motor home that they travel to Canada and around the United States with. What is your dream corvette? Colleen said hers would be a 57, 58, or 59. John said his would be a 59 because of all of the chrome. How did your love of Corvettes come about? John said his interest in Corvettes started when he watched the Route 66 show on TV. He also grew up with a friend, who in high school, had a 63 split window. Anything else you would like to add? They really enjoy the club and have met some fabulous people! Thanks for the interview John and Colleen! Page 7 of 10

8 Barrett Benson Corvettemuseum.org Winter Maintenance Since it s now the dead of winter, here are some easy DIY projects you can do on your Corvette (or your daily driver) now so you can be ready for spring. These are only partial fluid changes, but if done on a two year regimen, you should never have to fully replace the fluids. These procedures are designed to be done by only one person, so have at it and observe the cautions noted below before you begin. For these projects, wait until your wife is away and steal her turkey baster. Tell her you bought her a new one and it s being shipped, and really do it. I ve seen cheap fluid pumps at Harbor Freight for $10 but have not tried them. You ll need a pump for each type of fluid. Maybe someone can tell me how they do? 1. Change your clutch fluid: Failure to do this can cause your pedal to stick to the floor when you least expect it. Suck out the reservoir. Replace it with fresh fluid per your car s manual. Pump the clutch about 20 times, and repeat until your fluid remains fairly clear. It may only take a pint or so, but could take more. 2. Change your Power Steering fluid: Buy a quart of PS fluid per your manual recommendations. Swap it out just like the clutch fluid, only this time, start your engine and let it run for about 15 seconds, turning the wheel a little during this time. Shut the engine off and repeat. Keep doing this until you ve used up the full quart. 3. Change your brake fluid: A complete brake fluid swap requires 2 people, and should be done every 30,000 miles. You can do a partial swap and it can be as effective if done more frequently. To do this, just remove the fluid from the reservoir and replace it. This time, drive the car for a week and do it again. When the fluid comes out the same color as the new stuff, you re done. You can also buy a test strip at your automotive supply house if you are more curious about needing to change it out, especially for low mileage cars that have lots of years. Do not expose brake fluid to the air any longer than necessary. It loves to absorb moisture, which is death to a brake system. Caution: These fluids are extremely corrosive to your paint be overly cautious, plus make sure everything is super clean these fluids are not compatible with each other. Do not suck up the fluids into the rubber ball of your turkey baster it s hard to clean and can be ruined by the fluids. Don t forget to check out the El Paso County recycle program to properly dispose of your fluids. It s free.
