2 On This Day in History 1781 The last major battle of the American Revolutionary War took place in Yorktown, VA Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson made their longest telephone call. It was a distance of two miles The Cincinnati Reds won the World Series. Later, the Chicago White Sox were charged with throwing the game. It became known as the Black Sox scandal The first electric blanket went on sale in Petersburg, VA.

3 Crayola ColorCycle Grissom Patriots are collecting used markers and highlighters (any brand) to be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more! Green collection boxes will be in each classroom and on the bench outside the Commons. The program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. Remember, don t throw out that used marker ColorCycle it!

4 6 th /7 th Grade Girls Basketball Permission forms are available in the rack outside the Main Office for 6 th /7 th grade girls basketball. Tryouts will be held from 3:15-4:45 today and from 7:15-8:30 am on Wednesday, Oct. 10 th.

5 8 th Grade Parent Meeting A meeting for parents of KSD th graders will be held at Grissom on Wednesday, Oct. 10 th. The meeting will begin at 7:00.

6 Student Council The Student Council Exec Board meets today after school in Room 111.

7 Jazz Band Jazz Band rehearses at Prairie View each Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:15 pm.

8 Box Tops for Education The PE department is collecting Box Tops for Education. Please turn them in to your PE/Health teacher.

9 Board Game Club Game on! If you like playing board games, this club is for you! You will have the opportunity to try out new games as well as play some old favorites. Permission forms are in the rack outside the Main Office and are due to Ms. Duncan by Wednesday, Oct. 10 th. The first 35 students to sign up will be notified that they are a member. All others will be placed on a waiting list.

10 Yearbook It s not too early to order your 2019 Grissom Yearbook! Forms are available in the rack outside the Main Office. You can also order online at

11 Hot Lunch Tomorrow is Hot Lunch! Please remember to thank the parents serving you. Without them, there would be no Hot Lunch program.

12 Chorus Chorus rehearsal will be held Thursday after school in the Band room

13 Newspaper Club The first meeting of Newspaper Club will be Wednesday, Oct. 10 th. We will meet in Room 222 until 4:05 pm.

14 Intramurals Intramural sports are held Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:45-8:30. Volleyball intramurals are held on Tuesday, and Basketball intramurals are held on Thursday.

15 Ronald McDonald House Charities Grissom is once again collecting pop tabs to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities! The pop tabs are recycled and sold for scrap metal. Last year, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana raised more than $40,000 from this program. There is a collection box on the bench outside the Commons for your donations.

16 Picture Re-Takes Picture re-take day will be Friday, Oct. 19 th. If you were absent for pictures, or would like a different picture, be sure to come to school with a smile that day!

17 Art Club Art Club will meet Friday after school until 4:05 pm.

18 6 th /7 th Boys Volleyball Tryouts Tryouts for 6 th /7 th grade boys volleyball will continue today from 4:45-6:30 pm. You must have a permission slip turned in to Coach Chicvara in order to tryout!

19 Student Support Student Support is held in the Media Center before school every day from 8:00 8:35 and after school Monday through Thursday from 3:10-4:05. Please be sure to bring your work with you! You will need to sign in and stay the entire time. If you are a bus rider, please remember to sign up for the activity bus that day!

21 Water Bottle Filling Station Challenge Last year Grissom Patriots saved 10,263 plastic water bottles from ending up in landfills by using the water bottle filling stations throughout the building. So far this year, we have saved 2,364 bottles! Please remember to use these instead of plastic bottles!
