I understand that if selected to a Union spirit squad, I will be expected to abide by these rules, as well as any other rules designated by my squad coach, the Athletic Department, or Union Public Schools. I understand that membership on a spirit squad is both an honor and extremely hard work, and I will make every effort to be a successful member of the team by supporting my coach, my fellow squad members and the program throughout the year. After making a team, members will be able to apply for a partial need-based scholarship. There is NO GUARANTEE you will be selected for a partial scholarship, but we are thrilled to offer this opportunity to our families with members in good standing. 3 UNION HIGH SCHOOL POM PROGRAM All candidates who are interested in trying out for a Union Pom squad must understand that there are specific responsibilities and obligations which each member must assume in order to qualify and remain part of the squad. These obligations will remain in place for the entire school year. All Pom members will be considered athletes and will follow guidelines under the Union Public Schools Athletic Department. Being a member of the Union Pom Program has many rewards and is a valuable experience they will remember for a lifetime. Additionally, your daughter will give pride, leadership, and spirit to their school, peers, and community through their dedication to the Program! 8th Grade Pom Squad The Eighth Grade Pom Squad will consist of eighth graders only. All team members will attend the Union Eighth Grade Center in Union Public Schools. Pom is not a class during the school day for the Eighth Grade Squad; however, practices will be held during zero hour before school starts. There may be additional practices in the evenings and/or weekends as necessary to prepare for competitions. All practices are scheduled at the Coaches discretion. The Eighth Grade Squad will dance at home football and basketball games, as well as tournaments. The squad will attend any other events and local competitions deemed appropriate by Athletics and the Coaches. This squad may attend up to four local competitions. Additional practices may be necessary for these performances. Fundraising will be required in order to cover some of the expenses. These fundraisers may occur during the evenings and weekend. Fundraisers involve the help and support of both pom athletes and parents. Team members must be chosen for the competition team by the team coaches. Competition is not mandatory for any team member. Any team member who chooses to not participate in competitions will be a Spirit Member. Spirit Members will be required to attend and participate in all practices, events, games, non-competition performances, pep rallies and all other team activities except competitions. 9th Grade/Junior Varsity Pom Squad The 9th Grade/Junior Varsity Pom Squad may consist of freshman, sophomores and juniors. All team members will attend the Union Ninth Grade Center or Union High School in Union Public Schools. Pom is a class during the school day throughout the school year for the 9th Grade/Junior Varsity Squad. All team members will receive an academic grade for this class. Practices are held before school (zero hour) and during first hour. Team members then have a portion of first hour to get dressed for the school day. The 9 TH Grade/Junior Varsity Squad will dance at home football and basketball games and some wrestling events, as well as tournaments. The squad will attend any other events and regional competitions deemed appropriate by Athletics and the Coaches. This squad may attend local and regional competitions. The squad may have evening and weekend practices as necessary to prepare for camp, pep assemblies, competition, etc. Fundraising will be required in order to cover some of the expenses. The Varsity Squad will also attend a national competition. All team members will be required to attend and fundraise. Frequent and required fundraising occurs at the varsity level. Fundraisers involve the help and support of both pom athletes and parents. The fundraisers do involve time in the evening and on the weekends. Coaches want to reiterate that Varsity Pom is a time commitment and requires each girl to be organized and utilize their time wisely in order to be a successful student-athlete. Team Page 1

Parent Expectations In order for each Pom Squad to be successful, we want to encourage involvement in the Union Pom Booster Club. The Pom Booster Club is established as a means to support the Program and Coaches in a positive manner. Please keep in mind that Coaching decisions are made by the Coaches in the best interest of the entire squad. All Coaches want the best for the Program and each individual athlete. The following lines of communications will be followed for the upcoming year: 1) Pom girl discusses concern with Coach. 2) If the concern cannot be resolved through this discussion, the Coach will then discuss the concern with the parent either via or phone. 3) If the concern is still unable to be resolved, the Coach will discuss the concern with the Varsity Coaches. 4) Coaching staff and concerned parent will meet and be able to resolve any concerns. Please keep in mind that Coaches have other responsibilities and commitments outside of Pom, and it is asked that parents respect their personal and professional time. Page 2
