NEWS RELEASE Montgomery Independent School District Walden Road * Montgomery TX Sonja Lopez * Executive Director of HR & Communications slopez@misd.org * February 29, 2016 Destination Imagination 2016 Montgomery ISD students competed at the 2016 Destination Imagination (DI) Tournament held at Oak Ridge High School on Saturday, February 20, and the teams brought home numerous awards and honors. The DI program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. DI is a non-profit, volunteer-led, cause-driven organization whose purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Lone Star Elementary The Dude and Dudettes from Lone Star Elementary won 5th place in The Meme Event. They did amazing gathering information and putting together a cause to help dogs, something dear to their hearts! Thanks to ASVT for all their help and we continue to hope that others reach out to help our furry friends! We had a "barking" good time!!
Montgomery Intermediate School Mrs. Miller s DI group took 3 rd place in the Musical Mashup Event and 1 st place in Instant Challenge. Way to go Evan Franks, RJ Kimes, Reagan Johnson, Carlie Wilson, Amber Crowe, Hunter Munsinger, and Aniyah Holliday. They have put in a lot of time and dedication over the past five months and it has paid off. They worked for many months and hours after school to make this happen. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication, said Mrs. Miller. Montgomery Miracles had the challenge to work together to solve a problem that involved building a vehicle that traveled back and forth carrying a team member that also changed the method of movement and propulsion system as many times as possible. This was a huge problem to tackle and team Montgomery Miracles did a fantastic job of learning to work together and create their solution entirely by themselves. I'm VERY proud of what they accomplished! said Kyle Reihnolz.
Montgomery Intermediate School (Continued) Mrs. Wheats Montgomery Little Helpers were challenged with identifying a community need, and then planning and implementing a service project for that need. The team competition was the presentation of that project with a play that included props made by the team, the overall plans, goal setting, creation of their meme "Sweethearts for Seniors", a project timeline and visual results of the event. Silver Hills Assisted Living was chosen for the service project and students planned a Valentine event that included a morning visit and gifts from the team. Team members raised money with a successful sale of "Class of MIS Rocks" bracelets to MIS students. Residents were surprised with handmade knot blankets from the DI team and Valentine bags full of treats. This fifth grade seven member team brought home 2 nd place medals! Team members included Aiden De la Cerda, Bella Fiaschetti, Landon Fredrich, Caleb Haack, Madeline Heinrich, Tanyr Sornson, Carson Weighat and Mrs. Kathy Wheat as Team Manager. Montgomery Middle School Team DI-namite included Hannah Coleman, Zach Cooper, Alex Smith, Sam Fralick, Taylor Hampton, Evan Lorenz, and Emma Vela earned 5 th place for Improvisation. Whatever the journey is, it s not only the destination that matters, but the people with whom you travel...author Unknown
Stewart Creek Elementary SCE s DI Team, 7 Tall Tailes, received The DaVinci Award which was presented to the team for having a unique approach to a solution, for risk taking and for outstanding creativity. The team members were Niko Wilburn, Kylie Graybill, Maddie Curtiss, Briley Brown, Victoria Oliveros, Caden Chapman, and Edison Richter. With all the creative minds at DI, our team was sincerely honored to be recognized with this award, said Ms. Kayla McCurry. Madeley Ranch Elementary Madeley Ranch Elementary students worked hard and earned 6th place out of the 20 teams they completed against in the In Plain Sight Challenge. They also earned the honor of The Renaissance Award that is given to a team who demonstrated extraordinary amounts of effort and skill in their preparation. The judges said, "This group showed great effort in preparing and putting together their props. Their structures were very detailed, colorful, and beautiful." MRE s DI team consisted of Olivia Torcoletti, Zoe Lopez, Sam Dabney, Johnny Freed, Grace Kime, Conner Anderson, Gavin Cox and Team Manager Mrs. Shannon Torcoletti.
Montgomery Elementary Montgomery Elementary students competed in the In Plain Sight Challenge and the team earned 5th place! Team members included Peyton Lawson, Levi Turner, Hannah Wieghat, Lane Hyman, Lucas Hyman and Grace Nichols, along with Team Manager Nikki Taylor. I am very proud of my team and all that they have accomplished. They learned how to work together as a team utilizing the talents of each team member to solve multiple challenges. It was amazing to watch them blossom as a team. Their hard work definitely paid off, said Ms. Taylor.
