It certainly has been a rather mild spring, although I fear it will be a long, hot summer. I hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day holiday. We spent ours shooting (big surprise, right?). Things are looking good around the ranges, and Dermott has a range clean-up day scheduled for June 6th. Hope to see A LOT of you there. I ve talked about the Appleseed ( program in several past issues, as you may recall. Brian Swift sold out May event a couple of weeks ago, and when I stopped by, I saw what I expected to see a bunch of cooks learning to be riflemen! Again, a big thanks to Doug for coming up from Norfolk and to Brian for making this happen. We have one more event scheduled for June (sold out), and rumor has it, there are more in the works. Pending instructor cadre, this is something that I would like to see monthly at AAF&G. The importance of this program can not be stressed enough. Members of the Property Stewardship Committee inform me that work continues on their projects, and we gain some ground everyday. Patience is the key here, as I am learning. Those of you who know me are President, continued on Page 4. Junior Rifle NEWS The Junior Rifle Orientation Classes for 2010 have not yet been determined. The staff is waiting on the NRA Foundation grant to purchase the ammunition needed for the program. Guidelines for the NRA Foundation grants have changed this year and procedures for spending the money aren t as easy as in the past. I do hope to get an Orientation Class scheduled for the summer. For those that have called or sent an , you re on my waiting list to contact as soon as I get the date scheduled. If you d like to attend an Orientation Class ( or just want more information about the program), please me at andrea@chesmill.com. The 31 st annual Libby match in Marriottsville, MD is scheduled for June 12t h. The Libby is a prone match, where the shooters do 40 shots as an individual in the morning. Then teams are selected and depending on the numbers of shooters the team size could be anywhere from 2-4 members. The team match is shot in the afternoon. This is an easy-going match and especially nice for beginners. The team is practicing hard, so they can earn the Coaches Award for several years running. The team of Michael Kurtis, Nathan Moy, Zack Anna, and Ben Wastler will be joined by the newest team members of Sean Marshall, Chris Hughes and Courtney Cowger. Remember to mark your calendars for the upcoming Friends of the NRA Banquet on August 21, AAF&G Junior Rifle Program has been very fortunate to receive NRA Foundation grants for six years running. These grants support Youth and Women. Support our Youth by getting involved! Andrea Miller Chairman, Jr. Rifle Program Cowboy Action Had a great day 28 showed up for our May shoot. Saw some old friends from the Eastern Shore as well as our newest friends. Stages were compliments of Piney Woods Place, borrowed off their web site with permission. The weather cooperated with sunshine and warmth. Looks like we re still growing. Had some visitors watching the shoot and showing interest. Top Shooter for the day was 2 Step with a time of for 4 stages. No clean matches this time. As usual all had a great time no matter what the score. 3 High Power Rifle Building and Grounds Chairman Dermott Hickey has scheduled a Clean Up Day for Sunday, June 6 th and the rifle range can use some assistance in that regard so I hope to see many of you there on the 6 th. The AR15 Service Rifle league continues to see only about half a dozen shooters the first Saturday of the Those who have been to the rifle range recently have noticed the new storage units at the left hand end of the firing line. The one on the left (as you face them) will replace the old Rubbermaid container that held the readyfor-use supply of target frames and backers. There will also be some shelves installed to allow for storage of the carpet squares, spare targets that many donate at the end of a shooting session, and some frame repair materials. The right hand unit will contain fresh, un-shot-up target frames and backers, targets for scheduled matches, shot up frames awaiting major repair and other miscellaneous items. This unit will be locked. Soon to come will be some better tables/benches to replace some of the more rickety tables now there. I think growing grass must have kept some shooters away that day since the weather was gorgeous. K (offhand) That same weekend saw four intrepid vintage rifle shooters Brian Swift, Mike Krofchik, Steve Allen, and Bill Palk participate in the Eastern Regional CMP Games matches held for the last four years at Camp Butner, NC. On Saturday morning, after attending a Line/Pit Officials training course, all four shot in the Garand/Springfield/ Vintage Foreign Military Rifle match (all three types of rifles shooting in the same match) and Steve Allen and Bill Palk, both shooting M1 Garands, won a Bronze medal apiece, Steve with a 263/1X out of 300 and Bill with a 267/3X out of 300. 4 President, from Page 1. aware that patience is not something with which I was gifted. However, I am willing to learn. All that I can ask of you is that you keep the faith and continue to support the Association as we move forward to improve our great facility. I was heartened by the number of renewals we had this year. I m sure that Meg will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that this year was the highest renewal rate in recent times. All that I can say is thank you! We must be doing something right. As an aside, you may have noticed the posting of the names and residence city of new applicants. They are posted on each range and in the clubhouse for your convenience. Please take a moment to peruse the names. They will be posted each month. If you have input, positive or negative, please let us know. Meg is the membership chair, so direct your thoughts to her. I am going to ask John Michelli to organize another flea market for the Fall (by then I ll have some more $ saved up). The first one was such a success that I m sure many more of you would like to participate. If you have nothing to sell, come and buy something. Failing that, at least stop by for the floor show. It s not everyday you see Robert C. Meck in a spending frenzy! On another note, it is becoming quite clear that some of you aren t reading your newsletter. Each time that I get a call or , my first question is Are you receiving your newsletter? In most cases, I receive a reply to the affirmative. Then, I proceed along the following tack: Do you read the newsletter that the Association produces and sends to you at great expense? Generally, I get mixed responses here. Folks, I know you are all terribly busy; you must be because I sure am not seeing you at a minimum of four meetings per year. Nor am I seeing you at work parties and such. At the very least, you can find 15 minutes to read The SCORE. It even has pictures for those of you who have trouble with the words. The moral of this sermon is that most of the questions that I have fielded in recent months were ALL answered prior to them being asked in previous issues of The SCORE. I don t write this column each month for my benefit. This column is intended to give you the inch deep and a mile wide view of what is happening at YOUR club. You want details you say? COME TO A MEETING! Stay safe, and I look forward to seeing more of you at the General Meetings and on the ranges. David Cloutier High Power Rifle, from Page 3. On Sunday Mike Krofchik and Bill Palk participated in the CMP Rimfire Sporter Rifle match, both shooting CZ 452 bolt rifles, Mike s with a scope and Bill s with open sights. As an aside, Bill s rifle a left hand version - was newly purchased on the way down to the matches and had not been fired until the 10 minute unlimited sighters period before the first record shots. But thanks to the rifle he was able to score a Silver medal with a 555/14X out of 600. On Monday there was a morning M1 Garand/ Springfield/Vintage Foreign Military Rifle match and an afternoon M1 Carbine match that provided our comeuppance. Despite perfect shooting weather, the performances from Saturday and Sunday could not be duplicated. All of the match results can be found at the following CMP website: report_matchresult.cgi?matchid=4865. As many competitive rifle shooters may be aware, when you participate in an event where there are target pits, if you shoot you also pull pit duty marking the hits and misses on the target. The pits at Camp Butner, unlike those at Camp Perry, have a roof and are electrically operated. Also unlike Camp Perry, when the targets are up you cannot see them easily from the pits (because of the roof) and must rely on looking for the bullet impacts in the berm. This is not as easy as it may sound. Ofttimes the bullet buries itself in the berm with no dust or kicked up debris whatsoever. But it s all part of the fun of competing in these matches and you get to meet some very interesting folks in the pits. 5 BULLSEYE PISTOL REPORT Competitive Bullseye pistol shooting continues to ramp up for the season at AAF&G. Read on for what is happening. But first I digress: The Winners Creed It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes up short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly. Theodore Roosevelt That my shooting friends is what competition is all about. The second AAF&G NRA Registered 2700 Tournament for 2010 and Practice EIC/DR Match was held May 15th. A record total of 25 shooters (we only have 24 shooting positions) competed in the 2700 and seven in the practice EIC/DR Match. An overview of the top 2700 finishers with each aggregate score for.22, center fire, and.45 pistols with the x count and the individual three gun grand aggregate is as follows: Open Winner: Rich Kang HM/CIV High Master: Joe Chang HM/CIV Mike McGrath lines up to squeeze off a round at a 50 yd. slow fire target. The score indicated is for the 30 round National Match Course followed by the x count. Keith Herrington (DR-.38 revolver) Mike Butterfield (EIC-.45 pistol) The top AAF&G shooter was Ed Grove in the Master class, while Mike McGrath blew away the competition in the Sharpshooter class. His NRA Expert class card will be in the mailbox shortly. Erick Graves did well in the Expert class with a grand aggregate. Our next NRA Registered 2700 is June 19 th. 6 Bullseye, from Page 5. The first ever AAF&G NRA Approved 1800 Tournament for 2010 was held May 22 nd. A total of 12 shooters competed. This shorter NR sanctioned tournament is being tried this year to meet competitor s requests for more tournament opportunities before the July National Outdoor Pistol Championship at Camp Perry, and to provide additional matches to assist new shooters in gaining a NRA classification. An overview of the top 1800 finishers with each aggregate score for.22, and center fire, with the x count and the individual two gun grand aggregate is as follows: Open Winner: Roberto Perli MA/CIV HighMaster/Master/Expert: Two Competitors Garrison Johns MA/CIV Sharpshooter: Three Competitors Dennis Walls SS/CIV Marksman: Three Competitors Steve Rogers MK/CIV Unclassified: Three Competitors Pat DiMauro UN/CIV Though the number of competitors were low for our first NRA 1800 tournament one of our goals was clearly met. There were eight AAF&G competitors firing, of which two had never fired in a NRA sanctioned event, and two others had not competed enough to receive their permanent NRA classification. In addition there was one other unclassified shooter. Our next NRA Approved 1800 is June 5 th. The AAF&G NRA sanctioned bullseye pistol tournaments for 2010 number nine, of which three are now completed. To successfully run this many events the Bullseye Pistol Committee needs many volunteers. So far this year the response for making our events successful has been fantastic. For example: the May 2700 efforts started the Thursday before with Ed Grove, AAF&G Score June Past AAF&G President and Master class shooter Woody Harrison vists from Virgina to put a few rounds down range. Mike McGrath, and Jack Walsh preparing targets; on Friday Erick Graves set up the computer for competitor squadding and receiving stats; on Saturday the Range Team took over: CRO Paul Striffler, ACRO Jack Walsh; Line Officers Ray Allen, Bob Meck, Steve Peters, Steve Rogers, Rick Weidmann; DR CRO Jack Walsh; DR Line Officer: Steve Rogers; Statistics and Registration Ken Mitchell, Erick Graves, Dennis Walls. Lunch during the tournament was provided by Kathy Anderson and prepared and setup by Rich Weidmann. On the following Thursday, envelopes were addressed, stamped, and stuffed with final results bulletins and awards by: Will Graves, Ed Grove, Mike McGrath, Paul Striffler and Jack Walsh. The results were mailed to competitors on Friday. A great effort by some hard working volunteers! Our new NRA 1800 tournaments do not need as much assistance as 2700s (no lunch, only two aggs, and no practice EIC/DR), however many of the same tasks must be completed. A well done for well run tournament goes out to the May 1800 team of: CRO Paul Striffler, ACRO Jack Walsh (who actually called and ran the tournament); Line Officers Dave Hickey, Dermott Hickey, Fran Filippelli; Statistics and Registration Anne Orthner, Erick Graves; and Range Preparation Dermott Hickey Mowing.
