Activity Corner What an awesome way to start the month. having the ballet company performing the wonderful Nutcracker. Hope all of you enjoyed the talent and fun energy of the youth! We have many more wonderful activities lined up for you in this month of Christmas! Michael Nelson performs on piano. He travels all over the U.S. & what a joy to listen to him. Then, as we promised, our very own Clayton from the kitchen will be here to entertain you with his wonderful piano playing (mostly Christmas songs)! Loren Wolfe will be here to celebrate the birthdays for the month of December and The Vine Stomper s will be dancing it up with their Christmas show! Going out and about. two buses will be making a trip to see the Christmas lights at Sibley Park in the evening so make sure you sign up early for that!! We will be traveling to the Christmas Dance in St. Peter at the VFW, so if you want to hear some good Christmas music, make sure you sign up! Randy & Paul will be back to entertain us with their Christmas show. Remember Paul is on the piano and they both sing. They call themselves the Everly Brother s! That same night we will be having our Christmas Party during a special supper hour with Mary Quentzel and her quintet entertaining us! Julie Dickhudt will be back a couple of times this month to do yoga and massages. Many of you said how wonderful those massages are, so don t miss it!! We ve also been blessed to have two kindergarten classes coming to sing for us. They mentioned doing a craft with us too, so I know that will be fun!!! Another activity that we have played in the past that you have enjoyed, the dice game, is on our schedule. You roll dice and if you get doubles you win a prize. At the end you open your gifts and set them in front of you & play again. Shaking more doubles enables you to take the prize you want from the ones that are opened! Another fun activity during the winter months is having our traditional snow ball fight and enjoying smores! Come check it out!! And to celebrate the end of the 2016 we will be having our Traditional New Year s Eve Party with cocktails and wonderful appetizers! So bring your party hats!! 2 We are honored to have one of our residents turn 100 years old this month. A special birthday party for Lois Burg is planned for Dec. 27 th. Her wonderful son, Tim will be bringing birthday cake for everyone at the party. Happy Birthday Lois!!!! Hope you enjoy the special meal we are planning for your on Dec. 15 th. We would love to see you decked out in your holiday best for the occasion!!! Great friends, great food, great entertainment and presents.who could ask for more?!~ & we hope you add to the Holiday Spirit by decorating your own door/shelf too!! 3 Let Every Day Be Christmas by Norman Wesley Brooks Christmas is forever, not for just one day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself. Peace on Earth, good will to men, kind thoughts and words of cheer, are things we should use often and not just once a year. 4 Dan Groebner Dan was born at Immanuel St. Joseph s hospital on along with his twin brother, Dave. They had two other brothers; one passed away from cancer and the other one, Jerry, still lives in Madison Lake. He is 70 years old now. Their Dad was a dentist in Mankato & also owned a Parade Float Company and a grocery store on 3 rd Avenue. His Mom worked at Woolworth s downtown and did ironing for people. Later she worked and retired from Valley News. She now lives at Pathstone and is 95 yrs. old! Dan went to Washington Grade School here in Mankato, then to Franklin Middle School and graduated in 1971 from Mankato High School (which is now called West High). He recalls how he and his friends would always go to Robbies for burgers. When they upped their hamburger price by 5 cents his buddies were mad, so they took eggs and threw them at the outside of the burger joint. But Dan said he just stood there and didn t participate in that bad behavior! During and after high school Dan worked at Mueller s Super Way (it s where Busters is now). Then he got a job at the Sirloin Stockade training here in Mankato to be an assistant manager. He traveled to La Crosse, WI and worked as a manager at another Sirloin Stockade but kept his house in Mankato. Dan moved back after about a year when Mueller s offered him his job and he worked there till Clements Auto was his next place of employment selling cars for 16 years. In 2002 Dan had his first stroke. He tried to go back to Clements but he just couldn t do it! So he worked at Mully s Bar doing security for 10 years until he had his 2 nd stroke. He learned to play golf and pool with one hand and even built his 8 x 12 foot deck on his mobile home! His friend put the frame together and Dan nailed on all the wood with one hand! Dan met his first wife at Valley News and they were married in He recalls that he bought his first home in 1973 for $28,000. However, his marriage only lasted 5 years. He met his 2 nd wife at Mueller s. They had two children, a girl named Nicole and a boy named Craig. They were married for 15 years. His 3 rd wife he met when working for Clements. He delivered trucks to Poppies Distributing and she worked there. They had one son, Cody who s 19 years old now. He lives in Alden, about 9 miles South of Wells. Dan loves listening to oldies on his Jute Box and loves to listen to old records, tapes and CDs. He loves movies and has 53 John Wayne movies and over 350 others. He remembers some funny stories about things he s done in his life. One took place while test driving a vehicle at Clements. One of the used car salesmen was driving and he stepped on the brakes. The front seat that they were sitting in broke and they just about flew thru the plate glass window of Clements! Another story he recalls happened when he was pulling one of his pranks on his manager. He would take helium filled balloons and tie the manager s glasses to them and let them float up to the ceiling. Another prank involved putting a bungee cord around the helium tank and hooking it to the eye hook inside the bathroom door. When the manager tried to get out of the bathroom the bungee cord would make the helium tank slam against the bathroom door so he couldn t get out of the bathroom. Needless to say the manager would get a little irritated. But Dan said his co-workers did pranks that were even worse! One guy would shoot bottle rockets at the manager s office door! Another coworker would put Vaseline all over the manager s head set and when he put them on they d stick to his head. So Dan didn t think he was that mean to the manager!! Dan has overcome a great deal in his life, but still has a good sense of humor and smile on his face!!
