could be proftable to students who feel they have acqured suffcent knowledge of a subject through means other than takng an academc course at Eastern A student may feel that hs practcal work or extra and f passed, the credts wll apply toward graduaton However, a student wll not receve a t grade for the course nor wll t effect hs pont standng Seven Condtons Lsted There are seven condtons whch apply Letters Must Follow Polcy The Progress remnds au readers that there are certan pouces regardng letters to the edtor that must be followed We nvte your opnons on our edtoral page, but please remember^ that any letters prnted n "Readers'Vews" are the opnon of the wrter and not necessarly those of The Progress edtors and staff Letters should be lmted to approxmately words and should be typewrtten, double spaced When longer letters are submtted, we reserve the rght to shorten them, provdng the meanng wll not be altered 2 AU letters must be sgned before they wll be consdered for publcaton No Feffer M OOTTA mt CHAUVNST P6 names wll be wthheld from prnt 3 Letters whch may subject the wrter and/or The Progress, to Ubel wll be returned to the author for re-wrtng or wthdrawal 4 Equal space wll be extended to all letters supportng or opposng the same ssue, but The Progress wll not open ts pages to prolonged or petty personal arguments 5 No letters of condemnaton wll be pubfshed when the condemned cannot reply And please get them nto the campus mau or delver them to The Progress offce no later than noon on Tuesday M A MAM VOURrJ A (AJOMArO- / VOU HAVrTrAkte UPS Journalsts Should Get All The Facts As students of journalsm, we are To the edtorconstantly oblged to get the facts t s mportant that the facts always be presented clearly, correctly, and objectvely That s the goal of ths newspaper, Whle t has never been our ntenton to "use" facts or to dstort them n wrtng a news story, a problem arses when sources of nformaton fal to cooperate There are probably few people who realze how very hard t s to obtan whatever s necessary and desrable to wrte anythng that s relable and reputable n a newspaper Sparsd nformaton can make a good story dea a' poor sght n prnt whle beng equally frustratng to the journalst The results are below-average stores and post-censorshp of the newspaper A certan amount of suspcon s nevtably rased when people are unavalable for comment When reporter-newsmaker communcaton encounters ths breakdown, mass communcatons s n trouble, and the people ufo have the rght to know are n danger ot not gettng a true pcture of news events f t comes to the pont where the journalst, n an effort to do hs job, must go to one "top man" for au of hs nformaton, ths wll not only be a waste of tme for ths one person but also a burden for each reporter and edtor We would not be so narrow-mnded or egotstcal to mantan that the student journalst s a flawless character who knows au the secrets of the busness But the very fact that he s workng n a learnng stuaton should be au the more reason for hm to expect cooperaton, and also should make clear to taevrycre that the dffcultes encountered when attemptng to get the news are aften the very causes of errors and erroneous mpressons and assumptons earn VCTMS cf SAMS OPP&<= N TEM Two Dfferent Lectures? Although am not accustomed to wrtng letters to the edtor, am compelled to correct a glarng error n the artcle n your March 4 ssue on Dr Shrvastava- The wrter stated that Dr Shrvastava had prevously been n the Unted States when he was on an "Ogden-Fulbrght Grant" v Whle would be proud to have been one of the authors of the nternatonal educaton exchange program, was not Acts of Congress are often referred to by ther prmary sponsors The program under whch Dr Shrvastava came to the ' Unted States s known as the Fulbrght-Hays Program because Senator Fulbrght and Representatve Hays were sponsors of the legslatve measure n the Senate and House, qf Representatves Apparently the wrter of the artcle and attended dfferent lectures The author does not summarse the lecture whch heard Dr Shrvastava centered hs lecture around the dvergence of the polces of the Unted States and nda n foregn affars and he emphaszed the need for nda to depend upon her own resources rather than foregn ad t s extremely mportant for anyone who wrtes for publcaton to be accurate The wrter of the artcle on Dr Shrvastava has much to learn f he hopes to be a journalst He especally needs to learn to lsten Frederc D Ogden Senate s Self-Defeatng No matter how you feel about the Student Senate, t s obvously sometmes self-defeatng n nature An example of ths occurred on February' 22 After much dscusson the Senate voted to sponsor a delegaton to the Alternate to Amerca Conference beng held at the Unversty of Kentucky n presentng the moton, the sponsor Chuck Kelhoffer, b lled the conference as a dscusson-type affar on Vetnam, ecology, women's lb, race relatons, etc t was passed by the majorty of students who seemed to thnk that sponsorng dscusson groups would be a good dea Much to the surprse of many senators, the conference turned out not to be smple dscusson groups but meetngs and workshops for plannng the actvtes of a partcular poltcal and partsan cause Sponsored n part by MOBS and NSA, t featured as ts prncpal speaker Dr Danel fshn, recently back from Hano He spoke on the "Peoples Peace Treaty" whch we (they) had just sgned wth the communst students n North Vetnam ( an unconsttutonal act made n volaton of a federal ban) s 9 Vews The workshps (not dscusson groups) worked on and planned such thngs as sprng ant-war protests n Kentucky supportng Gay Lberaton (some homosexuals spoke), and called for the release of "all poltcal prsoners, Bobby Seale, Angela Davs, etc" Also present were varous groups such as the SDS and the nternatonal Socalst Party who passed out lterature The week followng the conference the Senate receved a "report" from the delegaton's commttee charman, Chuck Kolhoffer The report almost n ts entrety, was as fodows: "We were there on Frday; we ddn't attend on Saturday (the Conference lasted 3 days) They're plannng an ant-war protest n Aprl and thnk t was benefcal to attend the conference" The report voted on and passed Although t's hghly debatable as to whether the Student Senate should sponsor and therefore "gve ts support ndrectly to such poltcal functons; t s obvous they dd not beneft from sponsorng the conference because all they got from t was "news" of a sprng ant-war protest ' Whle t's true certan people spent a lttle of the Senate's money to attend ther poltcal meetng; t's not the money that matters but the fact that the Student Senate dd not beneft n any way from sponsorng ths poltcal conference Doug Crowe 802 Commonwealth j Senate Lacks Coverage As an nterested member of the student body, am concerned about the lack of coverage that the Student Senate gets from The Progress The students of ths campus are not even aware of what s gong on n then- own senate One partcular ncdent was the decson of the Senate to aend a delegaton from Eastern to the Unversty of Kentucky to attend the Conference^ On An Alternatve To Amerca on February 26 Some of the senators were led to beleve that ths was a dscusson of Amerca's problems Out of curosty, vsted ths conference What saw was almost a onesded dscusson wth delegates from groups such as SDS, Student Moblzaton Commttee, and the ndependent Socalst Club dstrbutng ther propaganda The t Gay Lberaton Front was there also-solctng new members and conductng ts own > "workshop" beleve that Senator Chuck Kelhoffer (sponsor of the proposal) s enttled to attend whatever conferences that he wshes, but for the Senate to send a delegaton representng Eastern s an entrely dfferent matter rvn Rchard Rash, Jr' Box 267, Martn Hall Weekly Student Publcaton of Eastern Kentucky Unversty Assocated Collegate Press, AU Amercan W6R eom GQUrU VG6LB Q6 AU mj6 THr5 / & ARER R6KTO6 AU CAV TO Acfteve mese eou&- / m nm>% Member: Assocated Collegate Press Assocaton Columba Scholastc Press Aseocston Natonal Newspaper Servce Kentucky ntercollegate Press Assocaton Represented for natonal advertsng by Natonal Educaton Advertsng Servce, nc Member of the Natonal Councl of College Publcatons Advsers Progress advertsng s ntended to help the reader buy Any fslse or msleadng advertsng should be reported to the Progress Offce Entered as Second Class matter at the Post Offce la, Kentucky STAFF WRTERS: Pat Abel, Betsey BeH, Sharon Felds, Peels Goode, Bonne Gray, Jan House, Paula Johnson, Jm Kark, Pauls Manx Edwns Mclntosh, Carolyn Murphy Dkuw Potts, Mke tssmr Owsne Rddeu, Breads Ross, Jhn less, Crasj Seger, Make SfBwau, Frank Usry Dong Vance, Ray Walker, Peg Wabt,WlBk Woods

What about bs dsposton? s he aware of others? Teachers can answer these thngs, but not on the bass of testa" Dr Martn nssts that the chldren should be made to respond Too many tmes the chld just lets the teacher gve hm enough hnts untl he can say, "Yes, that's what meant!" nstead of that, "t should be the chld who responds f the teacher does the respondng, t usurps the chld's chance to learn" The structured classroom does not allow for the Well, the Colonels just wrapped up ther fnest season n the last sx years wth a 6-8 mark and a careful nvestgaton of fnal Eastern statstcs wll show that every player dd ht for double dgts You probably don't agree wth ths fndng and we wll not blame you one bt A person would have to be pretty gullable to beleve that, but we have come up wth a formula that gves these results We just wanted to see what the actual averages of the Eastern players would have been had they played n every mnute of the Colonels' schedule Of course ths plan wll not have too much effect on those players such as George Bryant, Carl Greenfeld, and Blly Burton because they partcpated n over 90% of the total playng tme But for other players there are some nterestng results Here s the way you may go about tallyng what we call the 'Actual Ponts Per Game' stats t s a smple algebrac formula whch has total ponts scored over actual playng tme and ths equals X, whch represents APPG (Actual Ponts Per Game), over 40 mnutes (Total Playng tme per game) The next thng you do s multply the means by the extremes and you get ths result: (Total Ponts) (40 mnutes) = (X) (Actual Playng Tme) As stated before ths doesn't effect those players who played most of the tme For example, Bryant played n 899 mnutes of a possble 965 Hs fnal season average was 247 whle hs APPG went up slghtly to 263 Lkewse, Greenfeld's and Burton's marks went up from 05-5, and respectvely Charle Mtchell, who had a great fnsh for the Colonels after a slow start, shows a fve pont ncrease, wth the new method 'Mtch' ended the regular season wth a 66 around, so ts not too certan what the regular lneup wll be," he sad The ptchng staff was weakened consderably by the graduaton of Don McCullough, who posted an excellent 07 earned run average last year, and Larry Robertson However, Coach Hughes feels he has several hurlers who can do a good job The leadng ptchers should be senor John Combs, senor lefty Carl Shay, and junor lefty Crag Schlegh "All of these boys ptched good ball last year, wth the excepton of havng one bad game whch hurt ther statstcs", Coach Hughes sad Junor Blly Wells, who dd a good job n relef two years ago "should be
