He has your favorite element on the peri- very important question: What is majored in Biological sciences like odic table? Lee answered, Neurology, and Behavior. He actually used to like biology more, until he was assigned to chemistry. Lee stated, The more I understood it, the better I liked it. When asked how many times he has set off the fire alarm, Lee said, 3 I think, but I am pretty sure he set Scores it off way more than that (just kidding, not really). His favorite types Carbon. It is the focus of organic Volleyball Manteca Vs. Livermore 3-0 Tennis Manteca Vs. Laguna Creek 8-1 of labs are titrations because they are difficult, but you feel like a real chemistry, which leads to biochemistry. It s really eye-opening when these fields relate. As you can tell, he is pretty passionate about carbon. As a student myself, I thought at first I wasn t going to like chemistry, but it ended up being really fun and it s just the beginning! 3 Creative Writing Class by Lily Spicer The creative writing class at Manteca High School is welcome to all juniors and seniors. According to Mrs. Haskett, It s a place for students to explore their love for and ability to write. In this class everyone chooses a concept like betrayal or curiosity, and through the year they have to find new and interesting ways to show the concept. I wanted to understand this class more so my first question was for Mrs. Haskett. What is your main goal to achieve with your students? Mrs. Haskett: I want them to learn to love writing again and let them know each of them is an author and for them to find their own style, and not feel obligated to write. Are topics chosen for the students? If so, how do you pick them? Mrs. Haskett: 4 days a week, students are given topics designed to help them explore different parts of writing-perspective, dialogue, figures of speech, etc. The 5 th day they get to choose their own topics. I had the chance to sit down with one of Mrs. Haskett s students, Nikolas M.P, to get more information about topics and techniques for their writing. What are some topics covered in this class? Nikolas: Topics covered in this class are a lot of politics, and ways to make our writing more saucy or exciting. Politics aren t an actual topic but we talk about it a lot. What are some techniques used to help with your creative writing? Nikolas: To not use bland words in our writing. For example, don t use basic color names or basic description details. Are students allowed to share their stories with the class? And if so are you given feedback to improve your writing? Nikolas: We are encouraged to share, and though not given feedback immediately, we can talk to the teacher about our writings and she would gladly help. Based on what I ve experienced with the teacher Mrs. Haskett and all of her talented students, is that this is an amazing class for juniors and seniors to express their love for writing. Personally I recommend the Creative Writing class to any student who wants to improve their writing and for students who are open to trying new things. Written By: Lily Spicer 3

6 Remembering Joe Miller Joe miller was a former football coach at Manteca High School he recently passed away Friday July 29 th, 2016 at age 72, due to a four-year struggle with lung cancer. He is survived by his daughter Becky, Kevin s twin sister, and grandchildren Hailey, 17, Stephanie, 17, and Garrett, 14. His son Kevin said Monday, August 1 st, 2016 there will not likely be a funeral service. Joe s wish was to have his ashes scattered at Black Rock on Kaanapali Beach in Maui, where he vacationed annually with Kay, and his wife of 51 years. Coach Miller was a dear friend to Manteca High principal, Frank Gonzalez. Gonzalez and Miller used to play golf with each other and they were really close friends. Gonzalez can see Coach Miller as his family do to all the memories they have together. Principal Gonzalez daughter and Coach Miller s son used to play softball together. Miller was known as a tough coach but, he was willing to do anything for his friends and players because that s how much he loved them. One of Millers former friends spouse was very ill and hospitalized so, Miller went out of his way to visit and help their family out to make sure that everything was alright. That shows how dedicated and honorable Coach Miller really was. He made sure his players, family and friends were all safe and well. He will always be remembered to those who he loved and who loved him most. He was a funny and also, really serious man. He knew he had a duty to his school, family and friends. Some of Manteca High s staff had a few things to say about Joe Miller. Former football coach and MHS campus monitor Jerry Walser states, My first time working as a football coach at East Union High School he worked with Joe Miller and he was a very good coach, he made sure his team worked hard. He was a tough coach but he was always there for his players. Joe Miller will be dearly missed to those who share so many memories with him. He will always be a Buffalo. By. Tiera Brown and Estrella Sandoval 6
7 CHEERLEAERS OF THE WEEK From long summers, to Friday nights, and daily basketball games, Cheer is a lot of hard work, and they deserved to be honored just as much as any other person. Anna Zito and Kiara Presley have been cheering at Manteca High for the past three years, both on the Varsity team. Kiara Presley is a strong, determined cheerleader, who has put her effort into 8 years of cheering. Moving up to Varsity her sophomore year has changed her view on the game. She loves to perform during halftime, entertaining the crowd, and keeping them pumped. With all the experience of 8 years, Kiara has learned to be a cheerleader, you need to be versatile, spirited, and be able to learn & process at a quick pace. Being on any team, there s bound to be conflicts, Kiara s pet peeve is when people try to take control of the team and talk over others. Overall, Kiara loves being on the cheer team, and it has brought her friends for life. My proudest moment was being able to cheer with the Raiderettes. Anna Zito on her proudest moment in cheer. Cheer has been a thing in Anna s life for 6 years now. One of her favorite things to do at the games is Manteca High s traditional Fight Song, and getting her one man up. In Anna s view, to be a cheerleader you need to be a team player, work hard, be dedicated, and you have to be coachable. Stunting is a huge part of cheer, Anna hopes that her stunt group will one day get their straight up full, a cheerleading stunt. Both of these girls have put in time and effort for three years, committing to the MHS cheer team. With the nonstop work the team as a whole puts in, these girls deserve to be praised just as much as the other athletes at Manteca High. Go Buffs!
