1 Sutter Middle School Newsletter Information from the Principal Dear Parents, It's hard to believe we are already into the second half of the school year. We have a lot of fun activities coming up. We have one of our biggest annual traditions coming up, Air Rock. Air Rock is on March 3rd at 6:00 pm. During lunch on Wednesday, February 10th, the teachers and staff will show off their dance moves to tip off the excitement. We look forward to seeing some wonderfully entertaining performances. The PTSO will be putting on a fabulous luncheon for the staff on Thursday, February 11th to show their love and appreciation for our hard working staff. Thank you so much to the PTSO Board and to all of the families who help to support the PTSO! We also have our Valentine's Dance for students after school on Thursday, February 11th from 2:30-4:30 pm. On Friday, February 12th, we will be participating in No One Eats Alone Day. We remain focused on character building as we educate our students and want to use this opportunity to engage our students in being compassionate towards others and reach out to their peers so we can continue to support one another. Our basketball season has come to an end. Congratulations to all of our teams for another great season. I appreciate all of the hard work that our athletes and coaches put in, and all of the support of our parents, cheer team, and student body. We are now turning our attention to the spring sports season with soccer, softball, golf and track and field. Good luck teams! Our academic teams are continuing to work hard and are tough competition for the other middle schools in the areas of speech and debate, mathletes and robotics. Keep up the good work! All sports forms need to be turned into Ms. Juhlin in the office BEFORE tryouts. 2. You must print out a copy of your Infinite Campus grades BEFORE tryouts. Directions are located on the counter in the main office. Tryout dates are: 7th grade: February 1st and 4th from 2:30-4:00 8th grade: February 2nd and 5th from 2:30-4:00 Meet by the tree behind the gym once you are dressed and ready to go. The locker rooms will be open. Please make sure you lock up your things. You must wear a white shirt with your last name on the front and back. This year we are having a heated contest between 7th and 8th graders to see who can make the largest pile of new and gently used (but clean just the same) sleeping bags, jackets, gloves, blankets, sweaters, snuggies, and other cold weather outdoor gear for Sacramento's homeless population! Individual students who drop off their items at the Legacy table in front of the school in the morning will help their class to victory and massive spirit points! Clean out those closets for the new year and a great cause! ACADEMIC TALENT SEARCH (ATS) The Academic Talent Search Qualifying Exam will be offered at Sutter on Monday, February 22, 2016, beginning at 10:12 am (Periods 3/4) in the Library. Students who take this test automatically qualify for the ATS Summer Program at Sacramento State. Taking the test creates no obligation. It simply gives students the option to attend specially designed courses, in a variety of disciplines, that are both challenging and fun. Academic Talent Search is a non-profit program that offers 4th through 9th grade students (grade level as of Jan. 1, 2016) exciting, fast-paced classes designed to accelerate learning in subject areas they enjoy. Each Summer, these students have the opportunity to challenge themselves in traditional and non-traditional subjects, meet like-minded friends from other schools and experience a collegiate environment on the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) campus. The first step toward participating in ATS is taking the Qualifying Exam. The exam costs $15 per student covering test materials, scoring and mailing of test results. Fee waivers are available for those with financial need. Students and parents should feel free to drop by any day from 8 am to 2:30 pm or call for an appointment. The counselors are available to help with almost any concerns both academic and personal. Please fill one out and give it to Mrs. Fong. When asking a Teacher/Counselor/Principal/Asst. Principal to complete your recommendation forms, a stamped envelope addressed to the high school must accompany each recommendation form. Mrs. Tahara- Martin (Principal) and Mr. Lessler (Counselor) have developed a short questionnaire (located on the counter) and the information provided will assist them in completing your recommendation form. Return the completed questionnaire, Principal recommendation and a stamped addressed envelope to Mrs. Fong for processing. Counselor recommendation and a stamped addressed envelope should be placed in Mr. Lessler s mailbox located in the main office or Room 102.

ATTENDANCE ISSUES When your child is sick or going to be absent, please call the Attendance Office at 264-4362 anytime day or night.

If you need to have your child dismissed early, you may send a note with your child before school that day or call/email the Attendance Office at 264-4362 at least 30 minutes before the dismissal.

Tracy-Feickert@scusd.edu USED PRINTER CARTRIDGES Sutter is collecting empty inkjet and laser cartridges for recycling. This is an excellent program for the school since it has zero selling and absolutely no cost to anyone. We encourage parents, students and teachers to participate by collecting them from home and work. Turn them in to the office. Thank you. OFFICE DEPOT DOLLAR CREDIT When purchasing school supplies and products at Office Depot, please keep Sutter in mind. Just mention Sutter Middle School, Sacramento and 5% of your purchase will be credited toward our school. Four times a year we receive a gift card to spend at Office Depot for ongoing supplies needed by our staff. RT BUS STICKERS The February bus stickers are available in the office. The cost is $35 for the month and $17.50 for a half month. RT requests CASH ONLY. Students can purchase the bus stickers during lunch and after school until 3 pm. Students who need a Photo ID can go to 1225 R Street (light rail station) Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 5:30 pm. Photo ID cards are $3.00 cash only. The card is valid for 3 years. Students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or must show proof of enrollment at Sutter.
