1 1 MEN S TENNIS Released March 1, 2007 Current Record: USC remains undefeated After weekend wins over 8 Texas A&M and #47 San Diego, USC improves to 9-0 and is off to its best start since Upcoming Matches: 1 USC vs. 5 Rice Wednesday, March 7 th, 1:00 p.m. Marks Stadium, Los Angeles, CA 1 USC vs. #5 UCLA Friday, March 9 th, 1:00 p.m. Marks Stadium, Los Angeles, CA Free In-N-Out Burger for 7 th Man members Dual Match Preview 5 Rice Rice comes into town fresh off a huge road win over in state rival 6 Texas (Feb. 25 th ). This season, the Owls are currently ranked 5 and hold a 6-3 record including notable victories over Vanderbilt, Michigan State, Minnesota and Texas. Their loses were to North Carolina, LSU and Texas Tech. Led by ninth year head coach Ron Smarr, the Owls have appeared in the NCAA tournament four of the last five years. His 2004 squad reached the NCAA round of 16. Dual Match Preview #5 UCLA #5 UCLA travels across town play USC on Friday, March 9 th. The Bruins are currently 9-2 and are riding high following a semifinal appearance at the National Team Indoors held in Chicago. UCLA has notable wins over CAL, Stanford, Pepperdine, Texas A&M, Illinois and San Diego. The Bruins lone defeats come at the hands of #4 Baylor and Ohio State. The In-N-Out truck will be serving free food to 7 th Man members wearing their 7 th Man t-shirts. Memberships will be available at the match for $5. Trojans shut down Texas A&M and San Diego The Trojans come off an impressive weekend with a pair of 6-1 victories over 8 Texas A&M on Friday and #47 San Diego on Saturday. Against A&M, the Trojans swept the doubles coming back from deficits at all three positions. USC kept the momentum and dominated singles play, failing to lose a set in five of the six singles wins. Freshman Robert Farah clinched the match for the Trojans with a 6-1, 7-5 at #4.

2 Saturday s match against San Diego was the Trojans first road contest of the season. The doubles point eluded USC, but singles play swept all six matches and pushed USC s record to 9-0. Senior Dejan Cvetkovic clinched the match at singles with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Jonas Mouly. Trojans in the rankings After wins over 8 Texas A&M and #47 San Diego, the Trojans moved up to 1 in the latest Fila ITA national rankings released February 27 th. Senior Jamil Al-Agba enters the singles rankings at #71 and senior Dejan Cvetkovic at #63. The Trojans doubles team of Kaes Van t Hof and Robert Farah are ranked 4. Dejan Cvetkovic named Pac-10 Men s Tennis Player of the Week USC senior Dejan Cvetkovic has earned his second career Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week honor after posting two singles victories and a doubles victory vs. 8 Texas A&M and #47 San Diego. USC is undefeated in large part because of Cvetkovic's play at singles and at doubles with partner Jamil Al-Agba. Against Texas A&M, Cvetkovic and Al-Agba secured the doubles point for USC with a tight 9-7 win. At singles, Dejan defeated A&M s Connor Pollock 6-1, 6-4. Versus San Diego, Dejan had the clinching singles win, pulling out the tiebreaker in the first set before cruising to a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win. Cvetkovic is now 12-4 in singles play (6-2 in dual matches) and a perfect 7-0 with Al-Agba in doubles. He is ranked #63 in the latest ITA singles rankings. Dejan joins junior Kaes Van t Hof as Trojan Pac-10 Player of the Week honorees this year. Dejan on his Player of the Week honor: It s exciting, I m happy about it. I have been working really hard and it s nice to see that it s paying off. The individual award is nice, but more importantly our team is off to a good start. We are looking to keep things rolling in our upcoming matches against Rice and UCLA. Dejan on his improved play: This year we are all playing better which helps me play better. We are a confident group that feeds of each other. We have been working on all aspects of our game and I m beginning to see the dividends. I feel fit, strong, and mentally prepared for each match. Coach Smith on Dejan s performance: Dejan is a super-talented player who is finding his comfort-zone out there. This year, he looks more confident and relaxed, and he s having some good results. He is doing a lot of good things for the team and we look for him to continue to improve throughout the rest of the season.

3 Meet the freshman This year s squad welcomes a freshman class that has added tremendous enthusiasm, competitiveness, talent, and depth. We take a closer look at the six newest members of the squad. Gary Sacks Calabasas, CA, Calabasas H.S. Gary Sacks was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is a 2005 graduate of Calabasas High School. Gary won the CIF Southern Section title in He won the Hard Court National Championships in 2001 and Kalamazoo in Sacks was ranked in the nation in the Boy s 14s and Boy s 16s. Take Garrett Snyder s money in poker Jason McNaughton San Diego, CA, Futures Int l H.S. Jason was born and raised in San Diego. He lists Lance Armstrong as his biggest sports hero and would like to play professional tennis after graduation. He is majoring in International Relations. Jason was ranked #5 in the nation in the Boy s 18s. This season for the Trojans, McNaughton has primarily played #5 singles and has been ranked as high as #91. His teammates often call him Bull because his rugged and fierce style of play reminds them of a bulldog. Jason s weekly to-do list 1. Play video games 2. Watch Fox s Prison Break on Monday nights 3. Pound the weight room Robert Farah Cali, Colombia, San Andres Apostol H.S. First semester freshman Robert Farah of Cali, Columbia is making a strong Trojan debut. He currently holds a 7-1 singles record and a 9-2 doubles record (with partner Kaes Van t Hof). Prior to USC, Robert reached a career high ATP singles ranking of 625 (April 2006) and ATP doubles ranking of 923 (August 2006). Farah, like his close friend and former Trojan Ruben Torres, has added energy and enthusiasm to practices and matches. Robert s weekly to do list 1. Surf the internet 2. Practice tennis 3. Talk with girls Andrew Piotrowski Oakville, Ontario, Oakville Trafalgar H.S. Piotrowski, who is red-shirting this season, was born and raised in Oakville, Ontario. Andrew is a two time Canadian National Junior Champion and achieved a Canadian junior ranking. He earned a career high singles ATP ranking of 645 in His teammates have tagged him with the nicknames: Peitie, AP, The Traveler, and Rowski.

Eat a double-double (add grilled-onions) from In-N-Out while watching NBC s The Office Jack Levis Levis, who is red-shirting this season, comes to the Trojans form St. Louis, Missouri. As a senior in high school, he went in singles and was named the St. Louis Post Dispatch Player of Year. Levis also achieved a 1 national ranking in the Boy s 18s. Play pick-up basketball at the Lyon Center 3. Dominate the team ultimate football game as a two-way player Abdulllah Mag Magdas Kuwait City, Kuwait Salah Il Din. Mag was born and raised in Kuwait. He was ranked as high as 8 in the ITF junior world rankings and achieved a career high ATP ranking of #928 in July A member of the Kuwait national team, Mag played Davis Cup against New Zealand and Kazakhstan. Check the news in Kuwait A winning tradition USC s men s tennis legacy has produced 16 NCAA team championships (second most in the country), 13 singles champions (tied for second most in the country), and 20 doubles champions (more than any other school). The Trojans also have 14 conference championships and 139 All-Americans.
