The Wellesworth Wonders! Welcome back to The Wellesworth Wonders. But before we start our articles, we want to thank all our teachers for being here to teach us, and all the people we interviewed for giving us information for our articles. We also want to thank our newsletter team who helped us make this newsletter. We could not have done this without you. Erin, Francesca, Paige, and Victoria, you are the best. Thank you to Ms. Ainslie and Mr. Rishi for helping us as well. In this newsletter, you will have the chance to read about events that happened from September to December. We have had many fun events and will have many more that we will share in more newsletters. Read on! ~ Laura and Penny, Wellesworth Wonders co-editors Summer Vacations: We know summer seems like it was a long time ago, but we still wanted to ask students about their summers. Connor P. in grade 5 told us that his summer was super fun. His favorite part of his summer was the Poker Run, which is a boat race. When he was doing the Poker Run, he won a doughnut floaty. Ellen in grade 2 really enjoyed her summer vacation. She went to a water park and went down lots of water slides! Mariama in grade 1 explained that her summer was amazing. Her favorite part of her summer was swimming in the sea and jumping on a trampoline. She also got to see a castle while she was driving. Nolan in grade 3 commented, My favourite part of the summer was going to my great grandma s cottage at Wasaga beach for two days. I swam in the really deep water at the beach. It was lots of fun! Skyler in senior kindergarten loved going to the park. She liked to play on the slides. Beydan in junior kindergarten liked to go to the beach. She made a sand castle with her Mom. Connor M. in grade 4 went to summer school camp. Connor M. s teacher s name was Mrs. Brown. His favourite part was when he built a model playground using recyclable materials. It included Lego people, an ice cream shop with Lego ice cream, swings, a pool, and monkey bars. He had lots of fun at summer school camp.

School Clubs & Events Food Drive: On December 4 th to 19 th our school had a Food Drive. We have collected so much food for the Food Bank. Penny also collected food at her birthday party and gave it to the school Food Drive. Great job donating, Wellesworth! Terry Fox Walk: On September 27 th, Wellesworth had a Terry Fox Walk through the community. For the event, we raised money towards cancer research. We collected over $700! Laura carried the Canadian flag. There was a club that made a giant Terry Fox banner for the event. Mr. Rishi s class participated by making posters, which they held up as they walked. Renee was in a group with Amani, Madison and Kennece to make one of the posters. Their poster had pictures of Terry Fox running through all the seasons. Their poster was cool, but it took a long time to make. Pancake Breakfast: Wellesworth had a pancake breakfast on November 30 th. The pancakes were very good, chattered Shreya. She also commented, It was fun because I got to sit and eat with my friends and family. Nahla told us, It was fun seeing all of my friends there. She also thought that the pancakes and milk were very yummy. Everyone enjoyed the pancake breakfast. The pancake breakfast is also a great time to see our alumni who usually come back for this fun family event.

Casa Loma: On December 6 th, Ms. Kostro s and Ms. Connor s classes went to Casa Loma. Emily T. thought that it was great! She learned that you should always respect people s property no matter if it looks nice or not. Her favourite part was when she got to get her face painted like a reindeer. She also liked when she made a bookmark. She learned about the history of Casa Loma and how it was once a wealthy family s home. Aussie X: On September 21 st, Aussie X came to our school. Aussie X teaches kids about having a growth mindset through sports. Renée explained that she did so many fun activities and played a lot of fun games. Her favourite game was called Champion, a game where everyone stands in two lines and you pass a ball back and forth to your partner, who is in the other line. If you drop the ball or do certain things, you and your partner have to go to the end of the line. Reneé also said that she liked that the Aussie X Instructor did tricks so people would do things they were not supposed to do and go to the end of the line. Whichever pair was at the top of the line when the game was over won. It was really exciting! It was hard work but it was worth it. Wellesworth was so lucky to get this great program. It was a great experience. Halloween: On October 31 st, many people in our school celebrated Halloween. We paraded around the neighbourhood. Many classes also had parties. Paige bubbled, I was having the time of my life. She dressed up as a fuzzy pink fox. Victoria said she had lots of fun and she dressed up as a scary purple witch. She loved the Halloween parade as well as the Halloween party in Mr. Rishi s class. Shreya said, I was really excited and I wore my Batgirl costume. It was a great day.

Laser Tag: On September 24 th from 5 pm to 9 pm, Wellesworth families were invited to play free laser tag at Laser Quest. There were team games and games where everybody tried to tag each other. At the end of each game, there was a scoreboard and you could see how well you did. Daneena s favourite part was when she teamed up with Rachel. It was lots of fun, but Ms. Ainslie was so sad because she arrived just after everyone had left! Homework Club : Mikayla told us, I do a lot of my homework at Wednesday morning s homework club. I don t mind being at school at 8:00 am because I enjoy the teachers that run the club and I appreciate Ms. Ainslie s daughter, Rachel, being there every week. Her friends Madison, Shelby, and Renée all go. Renée said that she really enjoys it because she has lots of friends in homework club. She also helps her friends study and they help her as well. It is a great way to learn. We hope more people come next January on the 16 th. The Robotics Club: Our school has an amazing robotics club. Emily A. cheered, I love Robotics Club so so much! I go to Robotics Club every single Thursday. Most of her friends are in the club too. She has a lot of fun with them. Emily also says that she likes the teachers who run Robotics Club, Ms. Connor and Ms. Panwar. One of the things they do at Robotics Club is learning to program robots. Remembrance Day: This year we had an assembly which was really thoughtprovoking. Every class made a wreath for the assembly. The school choir also sang a song about wishing for peace. Our grade 3s, 4s and 5s spoke with Cpl Marie Kolluru from the Canadian Armed Forces. She has been on a peacekeeping mission, but usually works dealing with the finances. It was really amazing to get to talk to someone from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Cuban Brazilian Drumming: Our school was chosen for a special program that teaches kids how to play Cuban and Brazilian music on drums. Mr. Nunez was our instructor. The older classes participated in the program, and got to perform their songs at the winter concert. Daneena told us that she had lots of fun doing her part on the bongo drums. She also said that her class worked very hard and she thought it sounded great. The Elves Magical Adventure: On Thursday, December 13 th, we held our annual Winter Concert. It was called The Elves Magical Adventure. Every class did a performance. Room 13, 14, and 15 showed videos they had created. Ms. Lamey s class and the kindergarten classes sang, and Ms. Kostro s, Ms. Connor s, and Mr. Rishi s classes all did drumming performances. The Wellesworth Choir sang. Thank you to Ms. Laderman and Madame for conducting them, and Ms. Stetsyk sounded amazing on the piano. Laura and Javiera were the Masters of Ceremonies, and please thank Ms. Ayienga for creating their funny script. After the performance, pizza and spider plants (courtesy of the Eco Team) were sold. There was also a silent auction. Sadly, the pizzas sold out. From the sales, there was over $500 that will help our ECO team and will help to improve our playgrounds. It was a great night for everyone!

ACADEMIC LEARNING Room 15: Our room 15 students have been learning about routines, letters, numbers, patterns, textures and much more. Most recently, they made amazing snow globes with their own pictures inside the globe! They look wonderful. Queen s Park: On October 25 th, the grade 5s went to Queen s Park. They thought it was a great experience to learn about the different services of the government and to learn way more about the government in general by visiting Queen s Park. Javiera liked how her mom was one of the volunteers. Her favourite part was the Chambers of the Legislature. She really enjoyed it because most schools don't get that experience. Room 13: Ms. Ayienga s class made some really cool snowmen to decorate the gym for the winter concert. They had lots of fun making them. They made them with juice bottles and painted them white. Then they put on some hats and scarves. They looked AWESOME! They learned fine motor skills, about different textures and about different colours. Shahzaib is learning to read. He did an amazing job with this ipad book about mother animals and baby animals. Room 14: The students in room 14 did a lovely winter bulletin board. It has snowmen, penguins and lots of snow on it! They enjoyed making it. Kindergarten Classes : Our Kindergarten classes had Police Officer Nevills come and visit them. They learned about what police officers do and a bit about street safety. They also learned more about reading with visits from the Toronto Public Library. The librarian sang songs and read books to them. All the kindergarten students also got their very own library card!

Tribal Visions: On November 29 th, the whole school went to a performance by Derek and Naomi who are Haudenosaunee from the Brantford area. They did some dances and talked about their culture. We learned about how rude it is when they are thought of wrongly like in many of the old movies. Later in the day the grade 3s, 4s and 5s went to a workshop. At the workshop they made up dances in their houses and learned some dance moves. Abbi said, It was very fun. I really liked their costumes that they were wearing. She thought that it was a great experience. On Monday in each house, the older kids taught the younger kids that didn t go to the workshop the dance that they had made up. Measurement Evergreen Trees: Ms. Alviani s and Ms. Kumari s class made evergreen trees using strips of green paper. They had to measure the strips and stick them on the paper in rows, the smallest one at the top and the biggest one at the bottom. They loved it and their trees look amazing! Patterns: Ms. Dias s class and Ms. Varga s class had a big tub of ornaments that the students could use to make patterns. Nabila told us about how she made an AAB-AAB pattern or a red, red, gold, red, red, gold pattern. It is a repeating pattern. Learning about Cultures : As a school, we have had a chance to learn about different cultures. Abdirahman, Adam D., Ibrahim and Omar and Yaqub presented a slideshow about Somalia. Their mothers worked together to make some traditional foods for the whole school to enjoy as a snack. It was phenomenal!

SPORTS Girls Basketball: Francesca thought that it was really fun. She had lots of friends who also joined the basketball team. Our tournament was on Friday December, 14 th. Unfortunately, Wellesworth lost to both teams, but we played well and tried our best. One game we lost 8 to 10 and the other one we lost 2 to 10. Boys Soccer: On October 18 th, the boys had their first soccer meet. We were so proud with this year s boys soccer team and their amazing victory. We got a player to talk about his experience. Mihajlo said, I think that we did very amazing and we worked really well together and we are a good team. After the first score we shot we were so happy and that is how we got so encouraged so we continued to do our best. It was also a great experience. The moment we lost I was a bit disappointed, but I was happy we had made it this far. Wellesworth made it to the finals and got a banner. Victory for Wellesworth! Cross Country: Our first cross country meet took place on October 3 rd, the second meet was on October 17 th. The third meet was on October 25 th. Everyone on the team was in the first meet. Penny, Connor M., Madison, and Jakob made it to the second meet. Madison and Penny made it the city finals which is a huge accomplishment. Great running Wellesworth! Connor M. said it was really fun but tiring. He came 32 nd on the first round and in the second one he came 50 th. He said he had lots of fun at cross country.

Swimming: The grade 4 s went swimming on the 20 th, the 27 th of November and on December 3 rd at the Etobicoke Olympium. The program they participated in was called Swim to Survive, a program which teaches kids basic swimming skills so they can survive if they fall into the water. They all really enjoyed the program. Boys Volleyball: On November 27 th, the boys volleyball team had a tournament at George R Gauld. We talked with Mihajlo about the tournament. We had a really fun time and even though we didn't win, we tried our best. I am proud of what we did. We worked hard after school at our practices, said Mihajlo. We are all so happy and proud of our team. Girls Soccer: On October 16 th, the girls had their first soccer tournament. Daneena said, It was really fun but hard when we had to run a lot. She said she liked her position. The team lost both their games but they tried their best. At the tournament they worked really hard and afterwards, they felt good about what they accomplished.

Have a great winter break. See you on January 7, 2019!
