We have meetings on March 5th and 19th at Liberty Road Seafood and Steak. This Tuesday the 5th will be our planning meeting for the Annual Country Breakfast on Sunday, March 17th. Proceeds from the breakfast will go to help defray medical expenses of Mason Mathews who was struck by a car over 3 years ago as he crossed the road to the mail box. It has been a long road to recovery. He continues to progress thanks to therapy and help from family, friends and the community. We will need all hands on deck to make our Annual Breakfast a success. Lions are asked to show up at the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department Hall on Sunday around 5 am to begin setting up for breakfast. The firemen begin coming in before their shift change around 7 am. Should you have questions, Lion Bob Ensor is in charge of the breakfast. His home phone number is (301) Friendship Night is scheduled for March 19th. You are asked to invite friends and neighbors to this meeting. We plan to inform your guests about our club and Lions Clubs International by playing a fun and friendly game of Lions Jeopardy. So please provide a list of friends and neighbors who may be interested in learning about the Lions to Secretary Bill Strauss by March 5th, our next meeting. 3 Concerns Lion Harriett Brown is now home after successful surgery and recovering day by day; last report by Lion Pete at the last meeting was that she was talking in a whisper the result of a nick on her vocal cord. Club Dues Club dues for year were due July 1, Our Treasurer reports that some members have not paid, so please get payment to Treasurer Susan Baldwin as soon as you are able. Visitations Visitations have been made to 8 of the 17 clubs we are scheduled to visit. Please make your scheduled visitation soon - before time runs out! The visitation schedule is available at meetings from Lions John and Bill and on our web site for downloading and printing. Also, we will not have to get up an hour earlier because of the change over to Daylight Standard Time! That occurs on March 10. If you have a job you prefer doing at the breakfast, get in touch with the committee chairman, Lion Bob Ensor and let him know. Posters were distributed at the February 19 meeting. If you need more, please contact the secretary. The ad is included in this newsletter - see page 5! It will take place on March 17, 2019 at the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall. Breakfast Chairman Bob Ensor announced at the February 19 th meeting that he will be on station around 4:30 am. Volunteers who are preparing food are asked to report at least by 5:00 am. We will be serving from 7 am until noon. Those who cannot arrive early are asked to come later and stay and help for the cleanup. If you are unable to work, please come eat and then visit with customers / neighbors and distribute handouts telling about our club and Lionism. The Miss Fredericks will be there doing that also. As is the custom, the breakfast proceeds will be donated to a need in our community. This year, the breakfast is for Mason Mathews who was our beneficiary in Mason was critically injured on November 12 th, 2015 and spent 54 days in the pediatric ICU at Johns Hopkins Hospital where he had several surgeries. He had severe brain damage, a spinal cord injury and a broken leg. On the following January 8 th he was moved to Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital for rehabilitation where he remained for 119 days. He continues to need therapy requiring multiple visits to medical venues. The family is planning to add a room to their home which would house physical therapy equipment needed by Mason. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to help make this new room a reality and to defer medical and transportation costs. MD22 Convention The Multiple District 22 Convention will be held this year at Ocean City, Maryland from May The secretary has the Registration Booklet which gives all details and includes a registration form. It starts with a golf tournament on Monday morning at 11 am and ends with a Victory Luncheon when we celebrate all the new district officers just elected. The lucky Lions who are winners of the 50/50 drawing worth hundreds of dollars are announced. These tickets are available at club meetings from the secretary! Committee Meetings The Golf Committee will meet at the home of Lion Anita Kent on Friday, March 15 at 7:00 pm. As of this date, this is the only committee reporting a meeting for this newsletter. Please submit committee meeting announcements by the 27 th of each month. Scholarships The 2019 scholarships will be awarded at the May 7 th meeting. If you know a graduating student in our area, please let them know of the program. Applications will be available at our website and the Linganore High School website by March 7. Instructions for applying are included on the application. Next Cabinet Meeting Put April 13 on your Lions to-do schedule for the next District 22W Cabinet meeting. It is a brunch meeting and will be held at the Terra Rubra Lions Club social hall starting at 9 am for the Honorary Committee and 10 am for the cabinet meeting when brunch will be served. Leader Dog Banquet The Leader Dog Banquet for Region III is scheduled to be held on April 24. The LULC Membership Packet listed that event to be held on April 17; please note this update. 3

4 February 19 Meeting Miss Frederick and Miss Frederick Teen spoke to us about their year which ended on March 16 when the 2019 Miss Fredericks were selected at the Miss Frederick Pageant at Frederick Community College. Club president Jack Niemiec and secretary Bill Strauss attended the pageant and presented the 2018 queens with a certificate and scholarship check. Kayla and Erika have been very important to our club in that they have participated in all of our fund raisers, the breakfast, golf classic, the carnival parade, and the pizza and funnel cake sales at the carnival and Great Frederick Fair. They are a highlight at the fair especially for the younger children. After their presentations at the club meeting, they posed with Lion President Jack for a picture; notice that they are not wearing their banners and crowns; the 2019 queens, Kendal Neel and Bridget O Brien had assumed their titles just 3 days before! New Miss Frederick, Kendal Neel and Miss Frederick Teen, Bridget O Brien will be attending our Country Breakfast. February 19 Meeting The February 19 meeting is the Annual Family Night and the Membership Committee is making big plans for it. The headline event will be playing the television icon game show hit, JEOPARDY? The questions will be about Lions and Lionism and will be designed to educate our non-lion guests about what Lions are all about both locally and internationally. Hmmmm! Maybe could educate some of us! Letters have been sent to 6 guests; if you would like to invite additional guests, please contact the secretary with names and addresses so that letters can be sent to them. If time is critical, we will still send letters, but invitations and RSVPs may require use of the internet or phone service. Last years FAMILY NIGHT is remembered as an important event because Lions Pete and Harriett Brown attended and joined our club then. Lions Day with the UN Lions Clubs International will celebrate 73 years of partnership with the United Nations by holding two Lions Days with the United Nations events to take place in New York, USA on March 9 th and in Geneva, Switzerland on April 10 th. These events will commemorate our long-standing relationship as a consultative Non Governmental Organization (NGO) to the UN dating back to 1945 when Lion leaders were asked to help develop the NGO charter for the UN. Lion Clubs International was one of the first nongovernmental organizations invited to assist in drafting the U.N. Charter. Melvin Jones, International President D.A. Skeen of Salt Lake City, Utah, and future International President Fred W. Smith of Ventura, California, helped to formulate the NGO section of the charter and participated in developing the U.N. s humanitarian mission.
