One of the remarkable things is the amount of change that happens in a year - how much taller, more mature, more confident campers get since I saw many of them 10 months ago. To see everyone smiling, reunited with old friends, and having fun is just wonderful! It's been a great first week with terrific weather overall and a great start in all the activities. Many thanks to the counselors and teachers for all the energy they've put into helping the summer get off and running! Next week is a short week with no camp on Wednesday, July 4th, but with the carnival and all the other activities, there will be plenty of fun to be had! 2 P A G E 2 Group Two campers strike a pose on the first day of camp. Group 2 By: Georgia Carlson & Lydia Eastburn Group two had an amazing time this week at camp. We played with a parachute in flex and even made a volcano with it. In sports we played line tag, which is tag and you have to stay on the line in the gym. On the first day, we made slime in science and made towers with marshmallows and dried pasta in DISCO. Also in DISCO we got to plant seeds. Group two had tons of fun in the pool this week. We practiced our swim strokes and even some of us got to jump in at the deep end! This week in art we made snails, flip flops, and we paint flower gardens with watercolors. On Friday, the Franklin Institute came to camp and showed us many cool science experiments. Group two is so excited for the carnival next! Group 3 buddies having a blast during Games with Counselors after swim. Group 4 By Meg Andreoli & Abby Salerno This week I am having a great time in swim. I jumped in the water and even let my new counselor Daniel catch me. My group was practicing free style, frog kicks and even breast stroke. My favorite part is diving (even though I am little nervous to dive). In Sports I really like Group 5 counselors can t wait to meet their campers on the first day! playing the game line tag. The new sports teacher Jacob is cool and awesome. In Science our experiments are getting wacky bordering on goofy & weird. We were trying to look for this type of metal (iron) in Cheerios. We used a magnet to try and find it. No one found a lot of it, but it was messy trying to look for it. I learned in Art that it can be fun especially when we are making necklaces made out of washers. I liked decorating them with paint & nail polish. I am really looking forward to playing Kick the Cone in Flex, but the games we ve been playing are fun. And last but not least, in our new activity DISCO we ve been doing challenges and they are fun. My favorite was stacking I T the H Icups N K because we had to be quiet and when we won we got to knock all the cups down. All in all, this week has been AWESOME and I can t wait W to come H A back T W to camp E V everyday! C R E A T E D I S E A G O O D E X - We are all had to use string to make a Group 5 happy to be cup tower. Science has By Kevin Perry & Zoe Horan back at Solebury been so much fun with the Camp! In Art we played the but not least in Sports, we drawing game, made pipe cleaner people, had so much fun with Jacob and even made necklaces out of washers and in Sports we and string. We have a new thing at camp played Handball and called Disco and it s so much fun! We did Kick- the-cone. things like trying to make a tower out of pasta and marshmallows, an egg drop, and
3 W E E K 1 P A G E 3 Group 3 Group 3 has had a great start to the camp year! We have a new activity called DISCO and the kids love By Kelly Hauch & Skiles it, we planted seeds and worked together to make Roberts Salvador an egg successfully fall without cracking. In swim we ve been working on freestyle and improving our straight kicks. For flex we played tons of fun games, like ten-ten double ten and octopus tag! It s a great way to use all of our energy. Sports has been so much fun we played line tag, red rover and so much more. We have been tapping into our creative side when we made pom-pom sheep, flip flops, and watercolor flowers in art! We ve been doing some pretty crazy experiments in science, like finding iron in cheerios and making slime. We had so much fun when the Franklin Institute visited us and gave us an amazing science show. Group 3 can t wait to have more fun at the carnival next week! Group 4 camper Meg Andreoli & DISCO teacher Lu Reed. A FRIENDLY REQUEST Sometimes our activities require your assistance. Next week during carnival we ll have a photo booth. Any feather boas, funny sunglasses or other carnival attire is appreciated. Thanks for your help!!!! Tell us a little bit about yourself? I am originally from Seattle, Washington, but I ve been living here in Bucks County for the last fifteen years. I am currently a teacher at Groveland Elementary School. I love going into New York City and seeing the Philadelphia Phillies. Go Phillies! What are your hobbies, interests & talents? My hobbies are gardening and coaching. What is DISCO? DISCO stands for discovery & cooperation, but we love listening to music too. We do a lot of team building activities in DISCO. What is your favorite part of camp so far? The kids are my favorite part so far. They bring me a lot of happiness. If you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you have? I would be balsamic dressing. It s my favorite. It s a little sweet and a little tangy. It s delicious. Who s your favorite Disney Princess? Definitely, Merida from Brave. She s strong, independent and smart a great hero. If you were a tree (or animal) what kind of tree (or animal) would you be? This is a tough one because I love trees and animals, but I would say a cherry tree, because I love cherries and if I was a cherry tree I could enjoy cherries all day long. Who is your personal hero? Barrack Obama. He helped so many people in need and gave voice to a lot of people who didn t feel like they had a voice in the past. What is your favorite color? Green. It s the color of grass, trees and veggies. Who are you cheering for in the World Cup? This summer I am cheering for England and Mexico.
4 IT S NEVER TOO EARLY!!! If you enjoy spending your summers with us, it s never too early to start thinking about attending school here. If you would like some information, please talk to Scott. By Jake Schmukler Group 1 This week group one had tons of fun! We got to play games like Duck, duck Goose and Red rover in Flex and Sports. The campers made snails and drawings in Art, and used a magnet to find iron in Cheerios during Science. During DISCO we did a super cool egg drop project, where we got to make little baskets to protect our eggs and drop them to test their strength. We got to go swimming in the pool every day and some of us even jumped in! We finished our awesome week with a visit from the Franklin Institute; they brought a whole science show to camp! We are very excited to go to the carnival next week. CIT Brief This first week of camp was the first step from being a camper, to being a CIT or councilor in training. Coming from the perspective of a CIT, the transition from a camper to now councilor-intraining is a huge step into the world of responsibility, and caring for others. Along with responsibility, CIT s must make camp enjoyable for others than themselves. In order to train for this position of caring for others, the CIT s, in the first week, decided to prepare by taking up the important task of playing, bonding, yet informational games amongst their fellow CIT s. One of the bonding experiences the CIT s played were blindfolded challenges. The key part of the game was for one CIT to gain trust with another CIT, by guiding them with blindfolds on, throughout the serene campus. Another game that was played, were trust falls. After spending time practicing, the CIT s perfected the art of trust falls, by communicating with one another. Lastly, the final game that was played was imagining how to cross a deadly river of asphalt using only flimsy pieces of square carpet, combining all of our ideas together to form one plan that would end up successfully working out for all of us. In the end, all of these games ended up strengthening the CIT s bonds, knowledge, and taught them how to form relationships. So far it has been an amazing year, and hopefully more excitement is yet to come with perfecting the art of being a CIT. CIT s practice trusting one another in a blindfolded walk around campus.
5 Group 6 - By Lyla Petito & Oliver Horan This first week of camp is so awesome because we get to go see the Somerset Patriots and see all of our friends again. One of the fun things we did this week is that we got to go to the new DISCO activity. Also this week we did a lot of fun things that we have not done in a while. We got to play kick-the-cone and in Swim we got to play Capture-the-rings. In Flex we played Capture-theflag and in Option we played epic games of Kickball and one of our games was against Group 7. In Science we did lots of interesting and cool experiments. We made slime and took iron out of Cheerios with our new science teacher Adam. We are so pumped for next week because we all love the amazing Carnival and the chance to dunk Scott & Petito in the dunk tank. We have had so much fun this week and are excited for many more fun weeks ahead! These Group 6 girls can t wait to begin the fun of camp this summer. The Group 6 buds are stoked for a good time this summer. Group 7 - By Meara Chick & Charlotte Davis-Hup This week we really enjoyed the origami and graffiti writing in Art! We were able to look at an example, and become inspired to elaborate and make our own version. Although some kids did not have enough patience to complete their intricate designs, everyone ended up with a unique piece. In Sports, we had fun with the new sports teacher Jacob. Today, we were all taught a new game called soccer-golf. It was really fun and different from the other typical games we usually play. In DISCO, we have been doing different activities that incorporated better cooperation and teamwork. In Swim, we played Push the Watermelon which was really difficult and tiring. This week we have gone over strokes learned in previous years and today we played Steal the Rings which was really fun. With the new science teacher, we have done a few cool and new activities like making oobleck and plaster and extracted the iron from Cheerios. During Option, our whole group decided to pick soccer. In Flex, with Paul and Juliet we have played some really fun games so far! Autumn Brasof & Meara Chick play freeze dogeball what fun!
