2 2 The Log is published by the Squalicum Yacht Club, P. O. Box 735, Bellingham, WA and meets at 1800 on the fourth Wednesday of each month, September May, at our building adjacent to the Seaview North boatyard. Potluck format bring a dish to pass, your own table service and beverage. Members are encouraged to submit boating-related stories to the Log. 3 Commodore s Corner 3 Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone, and their boat, is surviving the cold weather. The recent string of sub-freezing weather has been a good reminder of the importance of winterizing. Not just boats, but homes too! BoatUS publishes an excellent guide to winterizing your boat, it s available here: At the January meeting you ll have an opportunity to sign up for committees. While many committees have returning chairs from last year, we have a few vacancies that still need to be filled. One is the Membership Committee. This committee has been doing great work recently to improve our recruiting program, and we ve already seen success from their efforts. The other position that we re looking to fill quickly is the Opening Day coordinator. I put out a call for a volunteer last month but didn t get any replies. If you are interested but are not sure what the job involves, let me know and we can discuss it. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in the community! We also still have several planned cruises without a host. If they aren t filled by the time the roster goes to press next month they won t be included in the schedule. Finally, have you visited our website lately? We re trying very hard to keep it timely. Most articles, including this one, that appear in The Log are also posted to the website. You might think of it as The blog okay, maybe that s a bad joke. But our goal is to make it a timely source of information both for members and prospective members. 4 4 SYC First Annual LP Party and Spaghetti Feed Despite the weather s attempts to scare everybody off, it ended up cooperating and we had a great time Saturday night. The music selection definitely qualified as eclectic, with record albums ranging from Mantovani and the Boston Pops to The Ventures and Fleetwood Mac. We didn t get a chance to hear all of the albums people brought, so we ll just have to do it again sometime. I thought I heard someone mention something about an LP party at a summer BBQ. Thanks are due Mike Heintz, for bringing his turntable and speakers. The sound was great and we even hooked up an iphone to his sound system to watch the ball drop in Times Square (although I never did see the ball; heard the countdown though!). And, thank you, John Robertson, for providing the spaghetti sauce. Joyce and Kris provided yummy salads, and Kris brought the perfect bread for sopping up spaghetti sauce: big chunks warmed in the oven. We had appetizers and, not surprisingly, a great selection of desserts. The club looked great it was still dressed up for Christmas and Steve and Joyce had cleaned it that morning so the floor had a beautiful shine. Thanks to everybody who helped provide food and decorate and thanks to everybody who came out on a cold New Year s Eve. We closed up a little after 9:00 and I trust everybody got home safe and sound. It is a draft because cruises that don t have hosts will not be published in the roster. So sign up to host! You can do so on the big chart at the next two club meetings or or phone me to let me know you are interested in hosting. Don t know what hosting involves? Contact me. I have a packet of written materials to guide you through it. Encourage a new member to share the hosting responsibilities with you. Invite a club member who hasn t been on a cruise recently. Cruising together is great fun and a fabulous source of stories for future cruises and club events. Also if you are cruising and want club members to join you for an impromptu cruise, send the details to Lorretta. She will send them out to the club.
