1 COYOTE HOWL SAN JON SCHOOLS December 18, 2018 Superintendent News It is hard to believe that we are already in the mix of the holidays when it feels like school just started. We have had a tremendous school year so far and are excited for what the rest of the year brings. It's an exciting time of year, reaching the half way point and celebrating all that is good in life with the holiday season. Bringing in a new calendar year comes with the opportunity for students to plan for their successes and creating goals for the second half of the school year. Please assist your children in coming up with their goals and assisting them in ways to continually strive to make San Jon the best school and community possible. We are so fortunate to have a supportive community and families. We just enjoyed an outstanding performance by our students with the Missoula Children's Theater! Hopefully, you were among those that joined us for their performance. I'd like to extend my gratitude for all the staff and community members that assisted in making this performance wonderful! As we enter this holiday season, on behalf of the San Jon Municipal School staff and Board of Education, I want to wish all of our families a safe, joyous, and wonderful holiday season! We all have a great deal to be thankful for every day, and I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to work with our wonderful staff, you children, and you on a daily basis! San Jon is a wonderful community, and I am grateful to help serve the staff, students, families and community.

2 Class News 5th Grade News Did you know that you do not need soil to grow plants? The 5 th graders do. We have learned that hydroponics means water + works, so the water is working to grow plants without soil. We have an aquaponics unit (which is a hydroponics unit with fish working to produce the fertilizer) in our classroom that is growing pea plants. Mrs. McCauley taught us about the chemistry involved with the plants and the fish. We are researching pea plants and hydroponics and also reading how people that have been affected by natural disasters that do not have valuable land to produce crops have benefited from hydroponics. 1st Grade News 1st Grade I-Station masters!! We have all worked so hard to improve our scores this year. We are looking forward to next year. Page 2

3 4th Grade News Where did 2018 go? It feels like it was just yesterday when the school year was starting and now we are half way through the school year and starting another year. We have been busy so far learning how to multiply and divide. Next we are going to learn all about fractions. Also we have learned about the main idea and supporting details and text evidence. We will continue to focus on text evidence as the new year starts. We are also learning about the 50 states and their capitals. Fourth grade would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Sports News Junior High Basketball is off to a great start! The boys are a very high-energy, and fast team! Under the leadership of Coach Watson, they are a disciplined, hard-working team who is fun to watch! The girls have had some very close and exciting games! While they haven't come out on top on all of them, they sure play like champions every time! The next game for both teams will be Homecoming on January 17! The JV Boys and Varsity Girls and Boys Tri-op Basketball teams are off and running as well. With Andrew Erwin, Anthony Lujan, Nathaniel Kneitz, Jarrett and Teagan Watson, Chad Becerra, Dustin Bryant and Tobe Slater playing on the teams, it is exciting to see our boys play some high energy games as they pair up with Grady athletes! For the girls' side, Morgan Becerra, Gracie Whitson, Teryn Foote and Bailey Montoya are participating and are a big part of the girls' team! We are so proud of our athletes! Please come out to area games and cheer them on! Class News 2nd Grade News The second grade class is excited for Christmas break. We get to end our first semester with our Christmas party in the library with a movie because our class raised the most money for our class tree. We want to say thank you to all of those people to donated to our class. We are looking forward to next year and what it will bring us in the classroom. 6th Grade News 6th grade is wrapping up their first semester as middle schoolers! Their final for World History was to create an Ancient China Museum. They did a great job on their handmade re-created artifacts! The museum will be on display in the Middle School hallway in December and January, so please come see it! 7th Grade News 7th graders have been busy bees with finals, basketball, FFA competitions, and Spelling Bee! Some of them will be traveling on to State to compete in opening ceremonies in FFA. Bailey McEwen will be traveling to County Spelling Bee as she was one of the 3 finalists out of 57 competitors. The majority of them are on the ball teams, and are leaders on the court! 7th grade wants to wish you all a Merry Christmas!

5 2019 HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES Homecoming week is January 14 th January 17 th Homecoming is Thursday, January 17 th DRESS-UP DAYS: Monday- Pajama Day Tuesday- Twin/Triplet or Look-Alike Day Wednesday- Wacky Wednesday Thursday- ALL OUT Red & Black Coyote Day PEP RALLY will be on Thursday, January 17 th at 2:30pm (during IE & 7 th period) HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES: There will be four games on Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m.: JH Girls, JH Boys, Varsity Tri-op Girls, and Varsity Tri-op Boys (JH games will play at the same time if opposite gyms) Bitty Ball athletes (K-2 boys & K-2 girls) will perform during halftime of the Varsity Girls & Boys games. Coronation will be held after the Varsity Boys game in the Old Gym There will not be a Homecoming Dance this year. We will be having a Winter Formal for grades 6-12 on February 16 th. An elementary dance will also be scheduled sometime in the month of March. More details will be sent out at a later date. Have a fun, spirit filled week!!

7 Class Trees Operation Christmas Wish Both classes won a movie/snacks in the library. All proceeds went to families in need this Christmas! Thank You to everyone who supported us this year. 1st Place 2nd Grade 2nd Place 6th Grade Thank You to all our local business and people for supporting such a great cause. Without business and community members like these this program would not be able to help so many families. A huge Thank You to New Mexico Beef Council for providing beef to our families and Dairy Producers of New Mexico for providing all dairy products to our families over the long holiday break.
