1 VOLUME 42, NUMBER 8 Marst College, Poughkeepse, N.Y, Cuomcy vsts and jons economc thnk-tank by ANASTASlA B. CUSTER and MATT MARTN Edtoral Staff Maro Cuomo was all ears as he chared a round-table dscusson on economc reform n the HudsonValley at Marst College, Monday. Approxmately 100 area busness and poltcal leaders partcpated n the sesson trggered by the recent cutbacks at BM. "You've (the Hudson Valley) never had to be super energetc about fndng hew opportuntes. Ths s the frst tme you've been challenged ths way," sad Cuomo, who stressed that the area has been relant on BM for, "sold, predctable strength." n the closed-door meetng, topcs ranged from enterprse zones to stmulatng small busnesses amed at dversfyng the area's economy. "Number one we have to stay true to BM, and be supportve of t. Second, we have to prolferate every other small opportunty you have," sad Cuomo n a press conference followng the meetng. "That offers tremendous hope to the Hudson Valley." Local representatves were encouraged by the vst, and hope that state money wll follow. "He s commtted to provdng state resources to help expedte deas n the Hudson Valley to brng development," sad Shaleen Kopec, Vce- Presdent for Advancement at Marst, who attended the meetng as an observer. "The people of the Md-Hudson have the talent to solve these problems, and the state government s wllng to work vgorously for solutons." "You have some of the best educated people, some of the best nsttutons, some of the fnest lvng condtons n the state and n the country," sad Cuomo. "f you can't do t here, you can't do t'anywhere." "You can turn the current stran and tenson and concern nto a whole new postve era of development n the Valley," he. Cuomo plans to see development through, as he ntends to return next month for_a smlar meetng. "There s nothng more mportant than the chance to earn your own bread. Therefore, my commtment to the Hudson Valley tryng to restore a postve local envronment s a prmary commtment,'' sad Cuomo. Many Marst students queston the state's commtment to prvate educaton, as Bundy and Tuton Assstance Program: (TAP) ad have been drastcally cut n ths year's budget.../": -,- ^- ~«.-- "" XrthFprdssconference, one student-addressed the governorabout these.'."see CUOMO page 8 ^ BM cuts trgger Marst to expand educatonal servces by JOHN LLOYD Marst College not only offers the communty ts academc programs, but wth the current local economc stuaton, the college has started a general effort that wll also provde communty servce and counselng. As a result of the thousands of lay offs at BM's three local plants, the Marst Fshkll Extenson Center wll expand ts offerngs. The center wll be benefcal to those formerly of BM and other unemployed professonals n ths area, sad Marc vanderheyden, vce presdent of Academc Affars. - VanderHeyden sad the effort wll not only consst of academc programs to retran the professonals, but also wll nclude workshops n career counselng and specfc workshops for obtanng certfcates. "t s our thoughtful reacton to the current stuaton n the county and to a neghbor (BM)-who has always been generous to Marst," vanderheyden Although ths effort s drected toward former BMers, t's avalable to anyone because the effects of the cutbacks at BM trckle down through the whole economy. The college has developed these programs and servces wth exstng staff members who are ready to ntroduce what Marst has to offer. VanderHeyden sad Marst s the only nsttuton n ths regon that can provde professonal graduate and corporate educaton. "The college (Marst) should be recognzed as the most comprehensve nsttuton of hgher learnng n the Md-Hudson regon," he Local students also feel the brunt of the current economc stuaton and how t can affect ther future as students at Marst.. Mke Murray, a- junor from Hyde Park, N.Y., sad he s affected by the stuaton and s not sure f he wll be able to afford lvng. on campus next semester because of hs father's recent retrement from BM. Amy Vogt, a junor commuter from Hyde Park, works at a restaurant next to a recently closed BM satellte buldng. "t actually affects me because how busness has dropped a lot," she Upon Marst's recent announcement of ts openng of an extenson center n Goshen, N.Y..there was a "phenomenal response" to the "open house" held n Goshen where 175 people turned out for the event. The Center for Graduate and Professonal Educaton wll be open n September. Academc V P: no addtonal faculty next year by CAROLNE JONAH A three-year hrng freeze of new full-tme faculty contnues to stran some dvsons at Marst College. "We have a hrng freeze at the college and we're not hrng anyone new," sad Vncent Toscano, charman of the Dvson of Humantes. "We don't have enough fulltme faculty for a college of ths sze." The only new faculty beng hred ths year are to fll vacant postons n the upcomng school year, sad Marc vanderheyden, vce presdent of Academc Affars. "We are not hrng any addtonal faculty," vanderheyden "Only replacements of faculty." n the past, hrng new full-tme faculty has occurred wth sgnfcant ncreases n enrollment, vanderheyden "We don't have the funds to add new faculty lnes," vanderheyden "The ncreases n enrollment are not so dramatc." But ncreases have occurred wthn the Scence Dvson, accordng to Andrew Molloy, charman of the dvson. "n the scence department there s a growng need to add another full-tme faculty member to support the growng number of majors," Molloy " thnk t's the fastest growng major at the tme." Molloy sad wth only 13 full-tme faculty members, ncludng only one n physcal scence, the dvson has to rely more on adjunct faculty. "We're forced to turn more and more to the use of adjunct faculty, whch s dffcult n courses wth laboratores," he "We've tred to have only full-tme faculty nvolved n laboratory course;" There s the lack of tme they have to spend n the laboratores and wth students. Ths lack of tme has meant that full-tme faculty have less opportunty to teach core courses. "All of our programs need new faculty. Clearly the reason we don't hre new faculty s because of constrants on the budget. - Marc vanderheyden Vce Presdent of Academc Affars "Over the last three years fewer and fewer faculty were nvolved n teachng core courses," Molloy "As the number of students n the major go up, you may have to have the full-tme faculty teach more and more full-tme courses. tseverely lmts the number of full-tme faculty nvolved n teachng scence core courses." Molloy sad t has become harder to respond to the "mountng" number of students n the departments of envronmental scence and bology.. "There has been no new faculty, but mantenance of the same full-tme faculty," Molloy "There s a genune need for a new faculty member." VanderHeyden sad he recognzes the growng enrollment n the Scence Dvson. "All of our programs need new faculty," vanderheyden "Clearly the reason we don't hre new faculty s because of constrants on the budget.". n 1982, Marst had 79 full-tme faculty members. By 1992, that number had ncreased to 153, accordng to vanderheyden. strants on the budget." n 1982, Marst had 79 full-tme faculty members. By 1992, that number had ncreased to 153, accordng to vanderheyden. "Over the last fve years we have hred 23 addtonal faculty," VanderHeyden "We have not grown at the same rate (as that of past years.)" Onkar Sharma, charman of the Dvson of Computer Scence and Math, sad about four years ago the school came up wth a plan to hre fve new faculty members every year. Snce the three-year budget freeze, ths has not occurred. "We should have hred 15 new faculty members," Sharma "That we have not done.'' Sharma sad he dd not expect to gan any addtonal faculty wthn hs dvson due to stable enrollment. Toscano sad addtonal faculty s needed "We have a pretty heavy teachng load. t's a jugglng act." - Vncent Toscano, Dvson of Humantes Charman n the Dvson of Humantes. n the department of poltcal scence there are only four full-tme professors and 145 majors, he "We have a pretty heavy teachng load," Toscano "t's a jugglng act." Toscano sad one effect of the few fulltme faculty s the dependence on adjunct and part-tme faculty. "More and more (core courses) are beng taught by adjuncts and they don't have enough tme," Toscano "We'd really strengthen the dvson wth more faculty." Toscano sad ths ssue rases a "red flag" over the long-term qualty at Marst. "Compared to nsttutons of the same sze our faculty s low," Toscano "We need...see FACULTY page 4 *

2 ' Remember the televson show "thrtysomethng," where everyone had a problem and people rarely lved happly ever after? Well, ts drector, Marshall Herskovtz, makes hs frst flm work the same way. "Jack the Bear" s a hghly emotonal, flm about a father tryng to rase hs two young sons alone after the death of hs wfe. Danny DeVto ("Batman Returns," "Jewel of the Nle") plays John Leary, the host of a late-nght televson horror show. John moves wth hs two sons, Jack and Dylan, to Oakland, Ca., nto what seems lke a normal neghborhood. He s a favorte of the neghborhood kds who are fans of hs show and occasonally ask Jack f hs father can come out and play. John s the knd of person who wll always be a kd at heart. He s not wthout hs problems thought A martn wth every meal, dreams of hs wfe who ded a few years earler, and n-laws breathng down hs neck tellng hm to straghten out, add to what he has to deal wth concernng hs chldren. THE CRCLE, APRL 22* 199a pours On sap As the move progresses, John realzes that there s a tme when everyone has to grow The Reel Story Jennfer Gandalone up. Ths role was a nce change for DeVto who gves a warm, sncere performance as a father who wants what s best for hs chldren, who were robbed of ther mother at an early age. Robert Stenmller Jr., a 14-year-old, plays Jack. Jack, lke hs father, s troubled by dreamsof hs mother., He s also responsble for hs 3-year-old brother (Mko Hughes, ^'Kndergarten Cop"), whch forces hm to grow up too fast. ' Stenmller does a good job wth some of the'more movng scenes, but for the most part, hs performance s forced: Ths kd s an actor n every sense of the word and s not always belevable. Jula Lqus-Dreyfuss (Elane from the TV show "Senfeld") hasa small role as a frend of John's who works on hs televson show: Her part s pontless and thnk her talents are wasted on an nsgnfcant, unmportant character.- -. '-'Jack the Bear" tres to access every possble emoton from ts characters. When someone s sad, there s a great outpourng of tears. Happness usually means loud orchestra musc accompaned by tears of joy and laughter. Anger s shown n one of the more exctng scenes wth a baseball bat. - When t's all over,-you?re just an emotonal v mess and are not sure what you are'supposed to be feelng. The drector, wants.you to thnk that the famly wll be okay, whch s what thought, but others may thnk dfferently. The fnal 'scene; whch seems very upsettng, s also a bt uplftng. t'shows that, when a famly stcks together, anythng s possble. Lke the message of "Crss Cross," Golde Hawn's bomb from" last year, "Jack the Bear" demonstrates the mportance of famly and that monsters, do rot only exst n the magnaton of on TV. Unfortunately, ths s not enough to carry a flm for two hours and keen the nterest of the audence. So, f you want to see a move that wll cheer you up, don't see ths one. Asa matter of fact, you should wat for the vdeo..f you really want to see Danny DeVto, go to your' nearest- vdeo store because what "Jack the Bear" needs s a better scrpt to :ve t a lttle more substance. Band comradery and good cheer erupt on campus by DANA BUONCONT And the rockets' red glare, the bombs burstng n ar, gave proof through the nght...that after the dust had settled n the theater last Frday evenng, somethng loud and muscal had happened. The fve bands that partcpated n the Battle of the Bands contest proved to be as dverse as the talent they demonstrated, wth muscal styles rangng from jazz mprovsaton to classc rock. The event, whch drew a farly large number of enthusastc people, was hosted by comedan Kevn James, who provded betweenband laughter. The bands, n order of performance, ncluded: Woodpecker, Sally Mudball, Dry Wall, The Brownstone Tro, and Rff Raff. The Brownstone Tro took frst place n the competton, followed by Dry Wall and Sally Mudball n second and thrd places, respectvely. Przes were studo-recordng tme for frst olace. 50 percent off Yamaha muscal equpment for second, and a 50 gft certfcate at Strawberres for thrd. Woodpecker's set conssted of three covers and two orgnals. Openng wth "Porch," bv Pearl n your ear Musc revew Jam, they also played "Zggy Stardust," by Davd Bowe and "Sex Type Thng," by Stone Temple Plots. One of the orgnals featured a rff remnscent of the musc to the vdeo game "Castlevana." Sally Mudball's fery performance conssted of two upbeat " orgnals, ttled "Cauton" and "Advl," as well as covers of "State of Love and Trust," by Pearl Jam and "Mustang Sally," most recently done by The Commtments. n addton to the usual fve-pece band, Sally brought out two female back-up sngers and a sax player for "Mustang." They were also able to overcome some sound problems durng "State" to come off wth a bg fnsh. Dry Wall, who performed wthout a snger, turned n several tght nstrumental, ncludng: "Spy of Socety," "Open Me Up And...," and "Trust n Me." Though they ran over the allotted tme of 20 mnutes, on an extended mprovsatoral jam, they appeared wllng to play;all* nght, even when the stage curtan closed! or~them. " Snpes contnues to pck dud 'Bolng Pont' generates lttle by KRA1G DeMATTES Wesley, Wesley, Wesley! What s wrong? Are you ths desperate to get nto acton flms that you wll settle for any move wth a gun n t? "Bolng Pont" s a.mstake, not a career move. We love you n "Jungle Fever." We love you n "Whte Men Can't Jump." But these strng of low-rate acton flcks have got to go. They are kllng you! n case you are wonderng, that s my letter" to Wesley Snpes, whose new move, "Bolne Pont," pad for two of my frends to see wth me. Please, do not get me wrong, dd not go nto the move wth hgh expectatons, so t s not lke am dsapponted because wanted somethng bg. just wanted an entertanng- acton move wth some good stunts, bg explosons, a funny one-lner or two, and lots of cool- lookng guns wth laree calber bullets. You know, somethng to keep me occuped and not have to thnk about all the work have to do. But Fate would not let me rest. Nope, sat through ths one hour and a half enema, dumbfounded that ths move had to be passed by some executve board at Warner Brothers, currently the most powerful. group n ' Hollywood. Ths move dd not know whether to be an acton flck, a tragc story, a dark comedv, or whatever. The story s from the book "Money Men," and ths s how the story unfolds, lke a book. But moves are not books, as everyone s so quck to pont out, so there s a lot of thoughts and acton left out. frst thought that although the move was slow and choppy, that t was leadng up to some clever endng or surprse twst. Unfortunately, nothng dd. soon recalled my Ebert and the Oscar Brotman's Law- "f nothng has happened by the end of the frst reel, nothng s gong to happen." Before long, found ths to be too true. The move never unfolds- t just happens, as Wesley Snpes tracks down the kller of hs partner. Of course, you know ths euv s eong to de because he sad the fateful words, "Hey, tell your kd hs Godfather s gong to take hm out tomorrow." He mght as well sad ths was hs last day on the job before he retres, or some other corny phrase that puts the crosshars on hm. Anyway, Snpes runs around tryng to act tough, tryng to act, and smokng cgars lke Arnold Schwarzenegger, but t all fals horrbly. Even the catch phrase of the move, that one-lner lke "'ll be back" or "Welcome to the party, pal" does not even ft nto the already dull acton. Perhaps you have seen t on TV already when Snpes says, "When fnd that (guy), 'll put hm n a box... by the book." wsh could tell the wrter to get a grp... by the book: The only orgnal aspect to Snpes' character s that hes not a cop, not a FB nor CA agent, and was not even n. Vetnam, but a Treasury Agent. But they do not bother to explan that untl much later on nto the move, just lke everythng else. The only element planned on to at least provde me wth somethng to genunely laugh at was Denns Hopper, who ever snce "Blue Velvet" has been the only actor snce Crspn Glover ("Back to the Future", "Wld at Heart") to crack me up just by actng. mean t n the upmost respect, as any of you who have seen and love "Blue Velvet" know what mean. Hopper s crazy, but a genus n any role, from "Apocalypse Now" to hs drectng career. Sadly, however, even he could not tread the qucksand of the scrpt, but there were tmes where could see the humor tryng to get out and t was enough for me and my frends, fellow Hopper-lovers, to enjoy t. The Brownstone Tro offered up a healthy dose of mprovsatonal jazz to the audence. Ther performance was extremely flud and the nteracton between sax, bass, and drums was tght. Towards the end of ther set, ther jazz exploraton segued nto a crowd pleasng verson of "Dazed and Confused," by Led Zeppeln. Rff Raff, the fnal band of the nght, seemed ready to case the entre classc rock songbook f necessary, wth versons of "Snce Been Lovng You," by Led Zeppeln, as well as "Day Trpper" and "Lttle Wng," by Jm Hen-. drx. They also trotted out a cover. of "Man n The Box," by Alce n Chans^. The.mood.backstage, both before and after the performances, was ; decdedly postve, though rather compettve. '! Bands dd, however, gve one another encouragng words before gong on stage. Pror to the announcement of the awards, they wshed each other luck. But there are postve aspects to ths move, as ever cloud, even as dark as ths one, has a slver lnng. For the frst tme n a move, except "Malcolm X," a character, sad, "'ll park (the getaway car) on Hollywood Boulevard. The cops wll thnk an Afrcan- Amercan stole t and left t there." Well, OK, there s a lot to work on,. but t s a start. euess. A whte character talkng to another whte character sayng "Afrcan- Amercan" nstead of all the racal slurs that appear n these moves s dfferent, no matter how forced the character had to say t. Dd Snpes have a hand n ths? would not be surprsed. So here s another one for my lst of bad moves, but then agan have not had the chance to really pan one n a whle, you know wth the Oscars and all. But here s the surprse twst to my artcle- ths was the worst move ever had to revew, even "Sneakers" and "The Last of the Mohcans." "Bolng Pont" s an awful move of scams and con-artsts that has the amazng effect of connng the vewers. You thnk wth a ttle lke "Bolng Pont" that the acton would be good, but the only bolng pont you wll fnd s n the audence. Ths move should be sued for false advertsng, and the drector, James Harrs, boled n ol. At the begnnng of last semester, there ddn't seem to be too much nterest n campus bands, but over the past couple of weeks, there have been several coffeehouses Where a few of these bands, as well as other muscal acts, have been able to perform n front of anywhere from 50 to 100 people. Ths s a good thng, and should contnue, because there s an awful lot of muscal talent at Marst. One of the best aspects of the musc scene oh ths.campus s that the majorty of the muscans know each, other and whle they mght not all be the best of frends, t was evdent Frday nght that there's..' respect.among them... BM repercussons may affect sports program by KRSTNA WELLS The Marst College athletc program may be affected by the recent BM lay-offs.. Eugene Dors, drector of athletcs, sad the department's greatest concern s how to attract people to the entertanment offered by Marst sports so that tcket sales reman steady. ''The ablty of people to purchase tckets on a regular bass mght be hampered," Dors " thnk every famly that ends up n a stuaton such as BM wll have to assess ther money more. The competton for that amount of money wll be greater than before." Gerard Cox, dean of student affars, sad the athletc department wll have to create an atmosphere that wll make people n the area aware of the entertanment avalable to them at Marst. "An evenng at a basketball game s one of the best buys n town. People wll fnd out the entertanment potental n ther own back yards and hopefully take advantage/of t," Cox Cox added that the school expects, the season tcket sales to decrease, but these losses wll be balanced by an ncrease n ndvdual tcket sales. "n more dffcult economc tmes people are less nclned to put out all of the money requred for season tckets at one tme," Cox "They may be more wllng to put up the money for an ndvdual tcket to a game." The cost for two season tckets to basketball home games through the Red Fox Club s 200, and ths ncludes membershp n the club, choce seatng, nvtaton to specal events, and tckets to the tournament at Madson Square Garden. The prce for two regular season tckets vares, dependng upon how many home games the team has durng the season, but last year's cost was 73, whch ncluded tckets to all home games and to the tournament at the Garden. Dors sad the college wll have to package ts goods n such a way that attracts people to buy ndvdual tckets to the games to keep the money flow stable. "We are gong to have to be much more aggressve n terms of marketng ourselves as a product," he "The competton for revenue wll be much more severe than t has been n past years." The Red Fox Club has gven Marst 450,000 n sponsorshp money spread out over a perod of twelve years. Dors sad fnancal support gven to the school by the Red Fox Club wll not change provded the sx members on the board affected by the cutbacks reman n the area. "Out of 20 members, sx have been affected. f they stay ther nvolvement won't change, but f not we have to fnd a way to replace them," Dors Cox sad Marst s not concerned wth whether t wll be able to attract the same calber of studentathletes n terms of scholarshp money. "We are gvng out scholarshps n numbers whch equal what s requred by the NCAA and the NEC to mantan membershp," he "The number wll only decrease f the NCAA decreases the requred amount of scholarshps." Dors sad the cuts n budget wll not affect the area of scholarshps because, Marst s at the mnmum end of the scholarshp amount avalable. The normal operatonal budget of the athletc department ncludes fundng already allocated to scholarshps and to the fees requred to be a member n the NCAA. Dors sad there are enough revenues that come nto the school to offset the spendng for varous thngs such as recrutng and scholarshp. "Most of the revenues that do come back to the school are prmarly from the NCAA," Dors The NCAA's Academc Enhancement Program brought Marst 20,000 last year and may ncrease to 30,000 next year. Marst also receves a share n the addtonal money brought n on the Dvson champonshp. Also, a percentage of the scholarshp money s gven back to Marst. Dors sad he s unsure how the BM cutbacks wll affect Marst's ablty to recrut n future years. "The amount of money to recrut a prospect vares form sport to sport," he "t s not that expensve when you look at the amount of people we are (ultmately) gvng our attenton to." On the average, the total amount of money spent on recrutng n one year for 20 sports s approxmately 80,000, accordng to Dors. "n terms of the total 580,000 represented, you are lookng at about 1,000 per student-athlete after we have narrowed down the recrutng lst," he The total number of students n the outreach for football s 200 prospects to get an average of a 40 to 50 sze class. Basketball outreach s approxmately 25 prospects to get a class of four to fve potental athletes. The man concern of the athletc department, as well as the whole school, s how t can attract publcty and stll help the area out of the economc crss. Cox sad n terms of the Tracey Patterson boxng match, held at the McCann Center on March 13, the most mportant thng was publcty. "We were on a natonal broadcast from coast-to-coast. Hs sentment s shared by many of hs fellow vets on campus. "What a waste. What a complete waste," sad Greg Hamlton, 43, an assocate professor of, economcs. "58,000 Amercans ded for what?" t s a queston that vets grapple wth everyday. "Most vets don't have a day pass wthout thnkng about ther experence n Vetnam," sad Dan Okada, 44, a professor of crmnal justce, who teaches the Vetnam class wth Adn. "Vetnam was the sngular defnng moment n my lfe, because t permeates everythng do," sad Okada. He was 21 n Vetnam. For every vet, the experence s dfferent. Each carryng hs own burden of memores. Each wth hs own reacton. "My son s named after my best frend from Vetnam, Greg Thomas," sad Okada. "The pan and anger have taken years to work through," Okada n Vetnam, you ddn't know a man for long, sometmes only a day's tme. "We lost 80 of 110. men durng one year. You only knew a guy by hs last name or a nckname," sad Adn, who acqured the name Voodoo-chld from a popular Jm Hendrx song. Every msson was dfferent for each vet. "We swam n the daytme, and ambushed charle at nght," sad Hamlton, who was part of a Marne combned acton group that worked wth the local mlta near Hamlton H Phong Pass, 30 mles North of Da Nang. "They sad that Charle (the North Vetnamese) owned the nght, well, we were contestng t wth them," Hamlton "Three months of snoopn' and poopn' protectng those rce pattes." For Adn and Okada, ther tme was spent hackng through the dense jungle that makes up the terran of most of Vetnam. Both receved Purple Hearts for wounds n acton. For Adn, that meant a couple hundred splnters from a fragmentary grenade lodged n hs back. They both realzed that the war was fghtng aganst them. " beleved that the war was unwnnable, gven the way we were fghtng," sad Okada. " thought my government knew what they were dong. Gven that Nxon was Presdent, that seems rdculous now." Returnng from ther tours of duty, each dstanced themselves from the war. Hamlton returned to school and Adn and Okada joned VVAW, Vetnam Veterans Aganst the War and were among the many who returned ther medals. Okada gave hs two bronze stars (acts of courage) and Purple heart to a frend to take to the Captal n Washngton D. Okada's wfe was also protestng Amerca's nvolvement n the war. "Apparently, she lad down n the path of a B-52, and chaned herself to the gate of a Naval Staton," sad Okada. Hamlton's return to the academa that he left at 19, he enlsted n the Marnes because he wasn't happy n college, ptted hm n the mdst of turmol once agan. Fndng the rght job that could utlze the 60,000 worth of educaton we have receved these last four years would be rewardng and allevate some of my job anxety. Most students r know are not nterested n "gettng rch" or "strkng a gold mne." At ths pont, they just want to fnd a job n ther feld of expertse. Borng ' Lfe changes you Perhaps all college students go through changes n ther poltcal development. They become less dealstc about poltcs and more realstc as they grow ntellectually and emotonally wth age. Suddenly the realty of fndng a job has occuped the mnds of today's youth. Ths has left poltcal ssues to smmer on the back burners of the "knowledge stoves" n our mnds. Ths may not necessarly be a bad thng. Those ssues, those potent poltcal agendas we once thought we should and could fulfll and affect become less mportant. Rasng famles, payng taxes, buyng homes and makng car payments become daly realtes that requre our mmedate and more passonate attenton. As we age, we become more confdent n the belefs we hold to be true. We rely less on others to valdate and approve of those belefs and tell us they are correct. Age has a way of temperng dealstc young mnds. Those late nght rap sessons about poltcs may contnue and your passon for belefs never totally leaves you but t seems for now the dealsm of today's youth can take a break. Busness as usual Electon '92 saw ts share of student actvsm ths past year. My housemate and (KUrt6t?eotl,l>»»>r\D-r Of fvm7jtoz-uaa:1r «*/*>«! even moderated a mock presdental debate. At the tme, poltcs seemed lke everyone's "cause celebre." Now, t seems lke "busness as usual." Maybe the meda plays a large role n "creatng exctement" and enhancng the "emotonal exctement" of an event lke an electon. The "power of the people" was a commonly heard phrase these past months, yet Washngton seems lke t s conductng busness as usual. Healthcare Hllary s conductng close negotatons on health care reform. t would be a nce gesture on her part f the publc were nformed n detal on those negotatons. After all, Bll promsed the publc would be nformed of all nformaton partcularly oh health care reform. The latest New York Tmes artcle s not so encouragng about the cost of unversal health care. Some of the proposals that could be mplemented would cause people to pay more for health care. The problem wth the proposed "Value Added Tax" or VAT s t places the tax burden on the poor and mddle class. "Mddle ncome famles could pay more than,000 a year n addtonal taxes wth a VAT as low as 4 percent, even wth exclusons for food, shelter and medcal care," accordng to the New York Tmes. We do need health care reform, but we do. not need more taxes. Do not expect employers to take on more of thefnancalstran they already would pay more for unversal care. Small and medum-szed busnesses wll not be able to survve f they are swapped wth taxes on top of more taxes for health care. Where s t all gong? Tax, tax, tax have heard enough about taxes. What the hell s the government dong wth the money they rase now? How about a new word from the democrats, how about "cut." Keep cuttng the reform package or cut excesses nternal government spendng untl health care s more affordable to the poor and mddle class wthout broad expansve new taxes that punsh those classes n socety who already bare the majorty of the tax burden. just hope those poltcans n Washngton do "change" because as a spectator, watchng these clowns go at one another and attempt to save money n the poltcal arena s just plan frustratng..
