January 2018 Fairfield, CA Friends for fun, Safety & Knowledge CA2K CHAPTER DIRECTOR S BECKY & PAUL CARROLL Onward and Upward!! Paul and I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We hope your holidays were joyful and fulfilled with all your Santa wishes!!! We had a great time with our family over Christmas and then friends over the New Year. Hope you all did too!!! Our Holiday Party and Christmas Cookie Exchange both were great. I know we are still eating all the delicious treats from the exchange! This holiday has provided me with at least five extra pounds that definitely have to come back off!!!! Nancy Clark, continues to ask for each of the chapters to provide her with any new officers. I am asking for anyone who might like to take on the Assistant Chapter Director position. With our new organizational make up, the assistant position might include working with other chapters, planning new adventures, or dreaming of succession!! Please think about it. We will be returning from the Officers Conference at the end of this month, so I will be looking forward to introducing all the new information for the chapters and for GWRRA as a whole. Let s look forward to possibly some exciting new ideas. Welcome to Chapter CA2K of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA), the world's largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing motorcycles. We are located in Fairfield, Ca. which is nestled between the Mendocino National Forest to the north, Pacific Ocean to the west, Sacramento and Lake Tahoe to the east, the San Francisco Bay area to the south and nestled next to the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma, we are truly Gold Wing Country, Some of the greatest riding roads in the US. We are dedicated to our Motto: Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge! GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a Non-Profit, Non- Religious and Non- Political organization
We will also be putting together our 2018 Chapter rides calendar. If you have any ideas of an after chapter ride, or a weekend ride, or any kind of a ride, let Dean or myself know about it. Our Pizza Night will be January 9 and we hope you all will come out for a little more of the comfort food. I know that after a week of salad, I will be ready for a little of the good stuff!! *********************************************************************************************************************************** wing nut RECEPIENT OF THE MONTH!! Well, it looks like we are starting the new year off with the familiar scenario! If you are going to nominate someone, make sure that you have your story ready and properly presented. It seems this month s recepient, didn t do well. He nominated Steve Palatino, who is a fimilar name on this list. He nominated Stevebecause he was a familiar name on the list and felt it would be a good way to end the year.well, it seems like there was a difference of opinion in the group, Bill Hogan, was almost unanamously voted in for picking on Poor Steve! As if Steve is usually that innocent! See the yearly list below. Very interesting. So, let s keep our eyes and ears open, to see what someone can come up with next month. So watch and see who may end up here next month WINGNUT RECEIPIENTS GOLDEN AWARDEES! Steve Palatino 3 Bill Hogan 2 Mike Ward 1 (Wow only 1) Jerry Kougal 1 (Another Wow) Larry Jackson 1 Paul Carroll 1 There were no winners for Jan,& Nov due to no meetings. Can you Believe, Nick & Bill made a whole year without an award!! ********************************************************************************************************************************** It pays to play with CA-2K Chapter Meeting Monthly Drawings Each month we have several drawings: Chapter Pride, if you wear your GWRRA Chapter colors you will receive a ticket for a $10 drawing. If you are a guest of CA2K you will receive a ticket for a door prize. We usually have some nice door prizes, especially, Rene s cake, usually some cookies and other goodies. ********************************************************************************************************************************** DECEMBER 2017, 50/25/25 Winner s The winners for December, were Bill Hogan and Becky Carroll. They both won raffle prizes also. Besides the 50/50, there were some really nice raffle prizes, so see once again it pays to play with CA2K. We hope to see you next month. DECEMBER 2017 CHAPTER PRIDE This month, our Chapter Pride winner was Karen Palatino. Karen was wearing his/her chapter colors or his/her vest and was the lucky drawing winner. See, show up, have fun and something to eat, wear your colors and you could also be a winner. See you soon. **************************************************************************************************************************************

. *************************************************************************************************************************************** CHAPTER STORE Do you need pins, flag s, bars, shirts, vest appointments, or many other items? If you do, see your Chapter Store Director, Lennie Millage at the chapter meeting. He is also open to any new items/special orders that you may like to see or want. You can also call at or him at He has lots of great stuff that he loves to sell. 167 years for California Do you know what was happening 167 years ago this fall... back in 1850? California became a state. The people had no electricity. The state had no money. Almost everyone spoke Spanish. There were gunfights in the streets. So, basically nothing has changed!
The following article, will be an ongoing article about the Gold Angels. It is being provided by Michael Douglas, who provides the team with their cinematography. He will be providing us with history and other tales of one of the top precision riding teams in the US. We hope everyone will enjoy the articles, as much as we enjoy the team. Thank you and enjoy, ED. ************************************************************************** Precision Riding with a Flair! Michael R. Douglas Tigger Swing? Infinity? Roger s Mix? Diamond Burst? Any ideas as to what these are? Well up to a couple of years ago, neither did I. Then while attending the 2015 California District Convention in Bakersfield, I was asked to operate a camcorder and record the performance of some group of Goldwing riders that called themselves the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team. OK I said, but what is a precision motorcycle drill team? Merriam-Webster defines a Drill Team as an exhibition marching team that engages in precision drill. If you substitute motorcycle for marching, you get the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team. A team consisting of several motorcycle riders and performers demonstrating incredible precision maneuvers on Honda s luxury touring bike, the Goldwing. Think of it like what the Thunderbirds do in the air, the Gold Angels do in a parking lot. So how did it start you ask? In 1999, a group of Goldwing riders from Southern California decided to watch the Arizona drill team perform at a motorcycle rally. They were so impressed that they convinced the Arizona team to show them a few drills and maneuvers. Being instantly hooked, the California riders decided to form their own motorcycle drill team. Thus, the Gold Angels Precision Motorcycle Drill Team was born some 18 years ago. Some of the founding (Charter) members are still actively participating today. That first year the team grew to 10 riders and they held practices twice a week to hone their newly discovered skills. During the 1999 California District Rally in Bakersfield some of the AZ drill team showed up and joined in on the performance. That was similar to pouring gasoline on a fire. They were seriously hooked and wanted more! In 2004, the Gold Angels were personally invited to participate in the International Drill Team competition held in Nashville, TN. The team performance was so impressive, they received a standing ovation for two new and innovative formations. That always looks good on the resume! The Gold Angels are a Not-for-Profit organization and never charge for a performance. Since its inception the team has focused on fundraising events such as the San Diego Toy for Tots, Elko Motorcycle Jamboree and Camp Pendleton s Motorcycle Safety Days. Many of the GWRRA chapters request the Gold Angels to perform at their individual rallies. The team also performs at many district, region and national events along with some local community events. Each team member is a volunteer and responsible for the costs associated with his or her motorcycle. These costs also include all travel expenses incurred during a performance and all practices. These riders do it because they truly enjoy it. So, what lies ahead for the Gold Angels? In February, they will be performing at CA-1I s Valentine s Ride. March finds them at CA-1R s Rally in the Valley. Contact the Gold Angels today about performing at your chapter event!
For more information on the team visit them at or find them on Facebook. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or making a donation, feel free to talk to a team member or them at: contact@goldangels.com Stay tuned! In the upcoming month s I will be introducing each of the team members. Ride safe and Ride often, *********************************************************************************************************************************** DECEMBER 2017 CHAPTER MEETING PIC S
GOLD ANGELS MOTORCYCLE DRILL TEAm NEEDS YOUR HELP!! To all GWRRA Chapter CA2K Members and Associates, and also anyone else reading this newsletter. This is a request for assistance for the drill team that we all know and appreciate. In the past, GWRRA has carried the liability insurance for these teams. With the restructuring of GWRRA, All Drill Teams must now carry their own Liability Insurance. The insurance for the Gold Angels, cost them in the area of $1,700 per year. They are attempting to raise this, by putting out a Gold Angels Calendar and any other ways that they can. The two pictures enclosed are the front cover and the December picture. There are many great pictures inside. Those who know members of the team, also know, that each rider owns and maintains his own bike, they purchase all their own clothes, equipment and anything else necessary for their performance. Plus they practice and train several times a month. Then when they travel to perform, they pay their own expenses. So you can see that they go to a lot of time, expense and effort to provide top notch performance at all kind of events, rallies and conventions. - The cost of these calendars is $20 each, which covers the printing and a good portion for the team. There will be a calendars at our next meeting, to be provided as some kind of a prize and so you can see the entire quality and the pictures. This request is coming from your Chapter Director and your Newsletter Editor. This is not coming from the Gold Angels, but they will appreciate any and all support that each of us would like to provide. Please feel free to contact me, Paul Carroll, (paul_carroll@comcast.net), cell, if any questions, or to provide a donation. I will collect donations from now until our December meeting, then forward all to the Gold Angels. Or, you may contact Trent Reid, (Cell, , or , trere9@aol.com) Please help in any manner that you can. We need to assist them in this effort, so they can continue to provide the excellent shows.
