1 From the Headmaster s Desk Lyonsdown News - 8th June 2018 You will have noticed that I was not wearing my Liverpool scarf on Monday. You may, or may not, be aware that what is being called The European Incident in some quarters did not go well for the men in red. Failure is hard to deal with, and Loris Karius will remember the 2018 Champions League Final for all the wrong reasons. Except, maybe he shouldn t. Rather than remember the errors he made, maybe he should remember that, after the game, he went to the travelling fans to apologise. Maybe he should remember that he said sorry to his team-mates, the fans, and staff publically and promised to learn from his mistakes: "I'd just like to turn back the time, but that's not possible... Thank you to our unbelievable fans who held my back, even after the game. I don't take that for granted and, once again, it showed me what a big family we are. Thank you and we will come back stronger." We all make mistakes, both children and adults. Getting things wrong and failing is important, it helps us to see how we can improve. As long as we have the courage and spirit to be honest about our failures, learn from these mistakes and try our best to develop, mistakes become a vital part of the learning process. Reflection is also about remembering great achievements: this year, 100 years after women over 30 gained the vote, those who fought for their rights have been rightly remembered. Just today, English Heritage have announced they will be commemorating the campaign work of these women in 40 key locations where suffragette meetings took place. The final Lyonsdown Learning habit, reflection, helps the pupils of our School to look back and review their year what have they achieved, what went well and what they would do differently next time. By doing so, they will be ready to make the next step in their journey. All the best for a pleasant weekend. C. Hammond Parking on Richmond and Gloucester Road Thank you to parents for supporting the School in making the area safe for everyone. Once again, please can I remind parents that the double yellow lines on any side of the junction between Richmond and Gloucester Road should not be parked on at any time for any period of time even if you are stopping for a few moments to drop off or collect your child. Parking here illegal, but it is extremely dangerous. We are now asking parents who park on the double yellow lines to move and a request has been made to the local borough to inspect the situation. 1

2 Reception Reception had a fabulous time at the Barnet Environment Centre. We hugged a huge oak tree, to say "thank you" to the trees for helping us breathe by taking our carbon dioxide and turning it into oxygen. We had such an exciting time looking for minibeasts. Ask us which ones we found. The Reception Team Mrs Yacub visits Reception Today children learned all about Ramadan. Mrs Yacub explained the importance of fasting and kindly brought in her prayer mat for all to see and a bowl of dates for all to share. Grateful thanks to Mrs Yacub. The Reception Team Year 3 On the last day of half-term, Year 3 enjoyed presenting their fables assembly to the school. Four fables were chosen to put across four different morals, including never falling for flattery and never lying! Mrs Silve 2

3 Year 6 s Isle of Wight Adventure Year 6, along with Mrs Windsor, Mrs Murphie and Mrs Dixon, spent four fabulous days on the Isle of Wight in the final week before half term. As well as visiting many sites of interest in support of the curriculum, including a glorious morning at Osbourne House, the girls enjoyed having the opportunity to relax. They played with their friends on sandy beaches; paddled in the sea; made sandcastles and sand sculptures; practised their (rather good) cartwheeling, piggy-back and wheelbarrow skills, and above all, relaxed and enjoyed some fun times before they say goodbye to us and each other at the end of this term. The weather was warm and sunny (mostly) and Lyonsdown pupils were complemented throughout our time away on their good manners and considerate behaviour, not least by our coach driver who made a special announcement as we pulled up at school on the Friday evening. We have so many wonderful memories of the trip to share with you, here are just a few Year 6, Mrs Windsor, Mrs Murphie and Mrs Dixon 3

4 Sports News Netball On Thursday 31 st May 2018, the Under-8 Netball teams played against St Alban s Prep School. All the girls played really well as a team and all their hard work throughout the year has really paid off. Congratulations to the A team who won 8 2 and the B team who won 4 1. Miss Doyle Eco News Our first Eco-Council meeting took place on Thursday, 7th June. All Eco-Warriers attended to have their photo taken for the Eco board. They will also all be completing an environmental review of the school next week in order to create our whole-school action plan. Miss Doyle, Mrs Cowie and Mrs Yacub 4

5 The French Café We hosted The French Cafe in the hall on Thursday morning. Year 6 parents and grandparents were invited for the occasion. The girls took their orders in French for pastries, tea, coffee and juice. They did very well and sang the UNICEF song 'On ecrit sur les murs', which gives a powerful message on world peace and empowered the children. Tres bien les filles, je suis fiere de vous! Madame Johnston Artist of the Week Lyonsdown School Chess player of the week Awarded to: Keshini Year 4 Congratulations Olympia (RG) Pupils in Reception classes have been learning about colour mixing. They know what the three primary colours are and how to mix their own secondary colours. Olympia created this beautiful picture based on a painting by Picasso. She painted her colourful flowers using special watercolour paints, then cut them out very carefully to make this collage. She then mixed up her own greens to paint the stems neatly. Well done! Reason: Mr Pattni Keshini came up with smart defensive ideas whilst under time pressure in her tournament game. Great work, Keshini 5

6 Mr Hammond s Challenge 2 Time travel is an extremely interesting subject, but is it possible and will it ever take place? How you present your answer is entirely up to you: posters, PowerPoints and speeches are three suggestions. I would suggest you study both theoretical (if it is possible to time travel) and practical (if the technology or conditions will ever exist to make it possible) points. Please present your answers to Mr. Hammond at any stage in the Summer Term, but no later than Thursday 28 th June at 3:30pm. FLS News Summer Fete The FLS team are working hard preparing for the upcoming summer fete on Saturday, 23rd June. We kindly ask every family to support this fun event by parents and children contributing the following items: 1) Purchased raffle tickets 2) 10 bags or jars 3) A raffle or tombola prize (details have been sent regarding the items required and are also shown on the next page). All children who participate will be able to come to school in non school uniform on Thursday, 21st June. Please ensure all three items mentioned above are brought to school in a carrier bag on Thursday, 14th June to the Foyer where the FLS team will greet you. 6
