1 Nebraska Men s Gymnastics Gymnastics Contact: Erica Nett Office: (402) Cell: (608) enett@huskers.com Huskers Compete at national sports festival The Nebraska men s gymnastics team (5-6,0-3) continues a streak of away meets this weekend, when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the Arnold Classic. The Huskers will compete at on March 5 at 12:30 p.m. This is a change from the previously announced 2 p.m. start time. The Arnold Classic, also known as the Arnold Sports Festival, is a four-day event, where athletes from all across the country come to compete in a number of different sports and events. The gymnastics portion of the festival will feature more than 4,000 competitors, both men and women, but the Huskers will specifically be competing against Ohio State and Iowa. In addition to holding the event in the United States, the Arnold Sports Festival extends its reach to Australia, Brazil, Europe and Africa later in the year. For more information on the event visit LAST TIME OUT: The Huskers are coming off a third-place finish against Iowa and Penn State on Feb. 27. Ethan Lottman and Kyle King each claimed an individual event title in the triangular meet. Lottman placed first on pommel horse and King tied for first on floor. IN THE RANKINGS: King and Lottman are both ranked in the Top 20 nationally. King comes in at No. 5 on floor, while Lottman is tied for fifth on pommel horse. The duo is joined in the Top 20 by Anton Stephenson and Austin Epperson. Stephenson, is ranked 12th in the all-around and tied for 18th on parallel bars and Epperson is tied for 15th on floor. As a team, NU ranks No. 7 in the CGA Poll and No. 8 in the Coaches Poll Season overview At IOWA, With penn State, Feb. 27 IOWA CITY, IOWA --- Nebraska had two gymnasts claim individual titles in its triangular meet against conference-opponents Iowa and Penn State on Saturday afternoon. Senior All-American Ethan Lottman placed first on pommel horse, while sophomore Kyle King tied for first on floor. Despite a valiant effort and a great representation of the Huskers on the national stage, neither advanced to Winter Cup Finals on Saturday night. The duo went up against over 90 individuals for a spot on the U.S. Men s Senior National Team and a shot to represent the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics. King competed in the afternoon session, where he had four top-ten finishes, including a third-place finishing on pommel horse (14.45), a ninth place finish on parallel bars (13.70), a 10th-place finish on still rings (13.75) and in the all-around (79.80). Stephenson represented the Huskers in the second session where he finished in 21st place in his session with a total score of Across both sessions, Stephenson placed 27th in the all-around, while King placed 35th in the all-around and 13th on pommel horse. The top 42 gymnasts, using the Men s Program Committee s points ranking system advance to the finals on Saturday. Gymnasts receive points based on their individual finishes during the preliminary sessions. King was the only Husker to receive points, earning eight for his finish on pommel horse. 2 Freshmen King, Stephenson will represent nu at winter cup, feb. 16 Jordan King and Anton Stephenson, freshmen on the Nebraska men s gymnastics team, have been invited to represent the Huskers at Winter Cup in Las Vegas on Feb. 18 and Feb. 20. Over 90 individuals will attend and each gymnast will be competing for eight spots on the U.S. Men s Senior National Team, along with a shot to represent the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics. The competition is not new to the pair. Both Huskers competed at the Winter Cup last year. Stephenson advanced to the finals in the all-around, where he tied for fourth on vault. The meet is by invitation only and is considered a prestigious honor. In order to qualify for the Winter Cup, athletes must have competed in the P&G Championships or must have finished in the top three in the all-around or individual events at the NCAA Championships. King competed at the 2015 P&G Gymnastics Championships, where he placed in the top five on all events and in the all-round competition. The Houston, Texas, native tied for first on pommel horse, placed second on floor, rings, parallel bars and in the all-around, took third on high bar and earned fifth on vault. I m pretty stoked to be competing at Winter Cup again, King said. But this time I get to represent the University [of Nebraska] and wear that block N on my chest, which means so much more than representing just myself. Stephenson also competed at the 2015 P&G Championships. He took home the title on parallel bars, earned second on vault, placed third on floor and pommel horse, placed fourth in the all-around, tied for fourth on high bar and claimed seventh place on rings. I am very excited to head out to Las Vegas to compete at Winter Cup, Stephenson said. It is always an eye opening experience swinging next to some of the nation s top gymnasts. It will not be as exciting as competing alongside the whole team, but it is still a great opportunity to represent the University [of Nebraska]. King will compete in the afternoon session on Feb. 18, beginning at 1 p.m. Stephenson will follow in the evening session, set to start at 6:30 p.m. Scoring at Winter Cup is based on a point system of 20. The highest-scoring individual on any event will be awarded 20 points, with the next highest earning 19 and so on. There are no points awarded for the all-around on the first day of competition. The top 42 gymnasts will advance to the final competition on Feb. 20, along with the top three gymnasts on each event. Champions will be determined based on the combined two-day score. At Oklahoma, Feb. 6 NORMAN, Okla. --- Despite posting the second-best team score in school history, three top-three individual finishes and a number of personal-best scores, the No. 6 Nebraska men s gymnastics team (5-4, 0-1) fell to the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners (8-0) on Saturday night by a score of Nebraska began the competition on pommel horse. At Minnesota, Jan. 30 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --- The No. 7 Nebraska men s gymnastics team broke another school record and posted the third highest total score in school history ( ) in its second-place finish on Saturday night. The Huskers came behind the fifth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers, but defeated the University of Minnesota Club Team in its first Big-Ten matchup of the season. Nebraska hopes to finish the 2016 season in the top seven nationally, executing the program s highest finish in over 15 years. Senior Leadership NU will depend on its three seniors to help lead the team both in the gym and in the classroom. All-American Ethan Lottman, along with Sam Chamberlain and Ryan Irick, all played significant roles in the Huskers lineup during the 2015 season. Lottman competed in every meet last season, including the postseason, where he finished fifth on pommel horse. Chamberlain set the program record for highest parallel bars score in 2015 with Irick posted personal-best scores on rings and pommel horse last season, and he ll look to impact the team on those events again in The three seniors look to bring the Huskers back to the NCAA Championships in their final season at Nebraska. Junior Experience The seniors are joined by four experienced juniors who all competed in the 2015 NCAA Team Qualifier. Austin Epperson became one of Nebraska s top rings performers in He also represented the team in the classroom and in the community, earning a spot on the 2015 Tom Osborne Citizenship team and Academic All-Big Ten for the second consecutive year. Travis Gollott emerged as Nebraska s first all-around competitor since 2014 and competed on floor at the 2015 Big Ten Championships where he placed eighth. He also was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of Chris Stephenson had a stellar year in his debut season as a Husker. The Fishers, Ind., native transferred from Air Force after his freshman season, but immediately made an impact for Nebraska as a sophomore. In addition to competing at the 2015 NCAA Team Qualifier, he also performed at the individual competition. He also was a standout in the classroom earning first-team CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors in Coleman Tokar competed regularly for the Huskers on rings, vault and floor, posting career-best scores on all three events as a sophomore. He also earned the prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award in 2015 for his leadership and work in the community. Sophomore Strength As the biggest class, the sophomores will help fill the void left by the four graduated seniors from last season. Kyle King and Daniel Leal will help lead the sophomore class for the Huskers. Both King and Leal competed at the 2015 NCAA Team Qualifiers as freshmen. Leal claimed individual titles on rings and on parallel bars on Jan. 30. King earned a berth into the 2015 Big Ten Championships event finals where he received the bronze medal for his career best vault performance of Alex Magsam posted career-best scores on rings, vault and parallel bars. Additionally, he competed in the 2015 NCAA Team Qualifiers. He also earned first-team CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors in Connor Adamsick competed on floor, pommel horse and vault in his first season at Nebraska and looks to become a key contributor on those events as a sophomore. Adamsick also earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades in Brenon Sommers will compete for a spot in Nebraska s rings lineup as a sophomore. He posted a career-best score of against Minnesota and Iowa last season. Page 4

5 Antonio Castro chose to redshirt last season, but looks for more action for the Huskers this season. Sanjaya Roy did not compete for the Huskers as a freshman, but still contributed. He was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2015 and earned first-team CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors. Each of the six sophomores made significant impacts in the classroom as well. They each earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll for at least one semester last year and expect to continue representing the team in the classroom. Freshman talent Five freshmen look to start making an immediate impact on the team. The class includes two redshirts, Joshua Everitt and Andrew Zymball, and three newcomers, Heath Anderson, Anton Stephenson and Jordan King. Everitt and Zymball anticipate making the lineups in 2016, while guiding the remaining freshmen in their first competitive season at Nebraska. The remaining three Huskers consist of high-profile recruits sought after by numerous schools across the country. Heath Anderson, from Mesa, Ariz., participated at the 2014 State Boys Championships and chose Nebraska over Oklahoma. He ll look to clinch a spot in the Huskers still rings lineup in Jordan King, a Houston, Texas, native was a member of the Cypress Academy of Gymnastics team that took first at the 2015 Junior Olympics National Championships. Additionally, King and Stephenson both represented Nebraska at the P&G Gymnastics Championships. King tied for first on pommel horse and placed second on floor, rings and in all-around competition. Stephenson took first on parallel bars and placed second on vault. Challenging Schedule Nebraska begins its season on Jan. 16 when the team travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete at the Rocky Mountain Open, before welcoming Air Force to the Devaney Center on Jan. 23 for the first home meet of the season. The Huskers have a series of away meets that continue into mid-march. NU goes to Minnesota on Jan. 30 for a Big Ten match-up. Then the Huskers battle defending national champion Oklahoma on Feb. 6. The team has a bye week to prepare for the Winter Cup in Las Vegas on Feb. 18 and Feb. 20. On Feb. 27, the Huskers take the short trip to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes. NU opens March in Columbus, Ohio, with the Arnold Classic on March 5. Then the team travels to State College, Pa., to compete against Penn State on March 11. On March 20, the Huskers return home to take on Minnesota and Iowa for the final home meet of the season and the final regular-season meet. The 2016 Big Ten Championships will be hosted by Ohio State in Columbus April 1-2. A combination of the team s regular-season and conference championships performances will determine whether NU qualifies for the NCAA Championships. (Deveau s School of Gymnastics) All-Around Anton Stephenson is one of three freshmen to join the team for the 2016 season. He hopes to start making a difference on the team right away. In January 2015, Stephenson took first in vault (15.650) and parallel bars (14.200) at the Windy City Invitational. In addition, he competed at the 2015 Junior Olympics Nationals. Stephenson looks to continue building on his success at Nebraska. He also represented Nebraska at the P&G Championships where he placed in the top four on five events and the all-around, including a first-place finish on parallel bars. Anton is a phenomenal gymnast who will help our team on all six events, Nebraska Coach Chuck Chmelka said. He had an outstanding career in Junior Olympic Gymnastics and is ready to compete at the next level. Earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week Honors for the week of Jan. 25, becoming the first ever Nebraska men s gymnast to earn the award Earned event titles on parallel bars and all-around on Jan. 30 in Minnesota Has competed in every meet for Nebraska this season Is one of two true freshmen to compete for the Huskers this season Posted career-best scores on pommel horse, still rings, vault, high bar and all-around on Jan. 23 against Air Force Scored personal-bests scores on floor and parallel bars on Jan. 30 in Minnesota s 20th in the CGA s national individual rankings (all-around) Holds Nebraska s highest vault and all-around scores this season at RMO vs. Air Force at Minnesota at Oklahoma Winter Cup Prelims at Iowa/Penn St Son of Greg and Kim Stephenson Born on Oct. 18, 1996 He brother of Chris Stephenson, who is also a member of the Nebraska men s gymnastics team In addition, he has one sister, Andrea, and one brother, Julian.
