6 Road to recovery Boxcar decoration and race contest Relay for Life Car Race Rules The Relay Road to Recovery Race will be held at the Alvin/Manvel Relay for Life this year, and we want to make it fun. This can be a really important part of the Relay since it not only provides a really fun group activity, it also brings to focus an important part of what Fight Back is trying to accomplish at the Relay: Teach participants and attendees something important about cancer prevention, detection and/or treatment and increase the competition between the teams to send an effective message! Prior to the Car Race on Saturday, each competing team will be asked to display their vehicle at a designated area. Each team should decorate their vehicle in a way that will send a message about cancer prevention, early detection, and/or management to the viewing public. Also incorporate your team's theme. We will then vote on which team s decorated vehicle. Emphasizes how important volunteer drivers are to get patients to/from treatments. One of the great needs of local cancer services is to provide patients with drivers who can help get people to and from their medical visits. Recruitment of drivers is a critical part of providing services, since many people have no other way to get to their appointments. The average time for the volunteer is one-two hours each appointment.
7 Of course, there are rules, we wanted to be specific in what those rules are, so that everyone will have a good idea of what to expect. Competition breeds camaraderie, and this event should help bring us all together. Build a great car, and let s have fun! RULES OF THE RELAY ROAD Your vehicle must be constructed out of a cardboard box or boxes. The maximum width of your vehicle is four feet (no length restrictions) and must have 4 complete sides (enclosed front and back). Each car MUST be able to accommodate one person - a driver. Your vehicle may NOT be motorized or have any mechanical parts (no cycles of any type). It also cannot have any wood or metal. You are encouraged to decorate your vehicle before the event, and we really hope you get creative with this. We would like you to incorporate something EDUCATIONAL about cancer on your car. This can be in the form of logos or billboards encouraging cancer screening. It could be that you want to draw attention to the need for legislative support of funding for cancer research and treatment programs. Maybe you want to get the word out about the latest treatment options for a single type of cancer. We will be presenting a prize to the car that is BEST IN SHOW. This will include not only the overall appearance, design, and ingenuity, but also the educational qualities, and the ability to clue folks in on a key aspect of the work of the American Cancer Society. Relay will have a panel of judges, judging and voting on the vehicles. The Race must be completed by the vehicle crossing the finish line with the driver and passenger. (passenger will be outside the car running with you.) Teams are responsible for the removal and disposal of their vehicles, away from the event site, after the Relay.
