5 MEMORIES DAN PATCH DAYS Fond Memories! When asked for my Dan Patch Days memories, I immediately focused on the 50 s when it started. The Savage Lions Club members were the main planners and everyone pitched in. There was a carnival with a big ferris wheel, tilt-a-whirl and other kiddie rides behind the municipal liquor store in the parking lot where the farmer s market is today. The churches sold food like hamburgers and a slice of homemade pie. The fire department had a beer tent, there was a street dance and admittance to all events was a Dan Patch Days button. For a couple of years there was a rodeo at the baseball park and horse races on the gravel road now called Quentin Ave. There even was a watermelon eating contest in front of Allen s garage. There was a kiddie parade where nearly every kid in town decorated their bike, trike, baby buggy or wagon and sometimes themselves. The big parade was always on Sunday. Horses from every riding club around participated, 50 s convertibles and many bands marched and played their best. Everything was decorated. One entrant that always stood out was the professionally done float that carried a life size replica of Dan Patch complete with a sulkey riden by depot agent Charlie Oster in the appropriate silks. This float was in all l neighboring g city parades and even the Aquatennial. Also on the float was the Miss Savage age queen and her two attendants. The first year the queen was the highest h button seller but after that it became more of a beauty pageant with formals and a celebrity from the cities who served as the judge and made the selection. Usually about a dozen teenage girls participated. The city grew, the event grew but we still have Dan Patch Days thanks to a dedicated group of people from Dan Patch Days, Inc. and the Savage Chamber who keep the memory alive. The parade is still on Sunday and former residents come back to the event. For more information on the early Dan Patch Days check out the Heritage Room at the Savage Library as they have a list of all of the queens, a scrapbook of the first pa rades, a complete collection of the buttons and the programs. ~Janet Bohn Williams, 2015 Photos courtesy of the Dan Patch Historical Society Heritage Room at the Scott County Library, Savage, Minnesota.
