4 PWHS CHARACTER COUNTS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Girls Cross Country by Joe Adamak September 17, 2016 UW Parkside Angel Invite This week's Character Counts student athlete of the week is Charles Schlessinger. Charles has a tremendously positive attitude, he has a commitment to his teammates, and his effort can never be questioned. Above all though, Charles has determination on and off the field. Charles has been a 3 year varsity player; he is the spark plug for our team leading by example with his tenacity. Although there may be more skilled soccer players on the field, there are seldom harder working players. Charles started off the season with a bang getting several early goals and assists, slowed and on the sidelines for a week due to a concussion, Charles was instrumental in the Pirates earning a 2-2 tie with the state ranked Cedarburg bulldogs getting the goal to tie the game and earning a penalty kick too. While we are proud of what Charles has accomplished on the soccer field we are more impressed with his actions and commitment to the pillars. Please read below about Charles, his teammate Jack Larson, and volleyball player Kaylyn Garant. I am in the library for 5th hour study hall and I just wanted to share something that Laura and I witnessed today. A new student (who is also a freshman) sat down at a table by himself. Just a few minutes later a senior boy went over to ask him if he wanted to sit with him and his friends (2 other senior students). I listened as they introduced themselves and continued to ask the new student questions about himself. They made him feel very welcome and included him in their conversation. It was an awesome interaction to witness after a long week. Thanks, Jenny CONGRATULATIONS CHARLES! The Team traveled to UW Parkside this past Saturday to compete in the 35 team (28 complete) Angel Invitational. The course was in rough shape, but the Pirates were able to navigate the terrain and place 5th despite being without 3 of the team s top 7 runners (4 of the top 9). DSHA s Meghan Scott (4th in Division One State in 2015) was the overall winner as she helped to lead her team to the invitational title. Leading the way on a bad foot for the Pirates was senior Abeba Sullivan whose time of 19:35 was good enough for 3rd place in the field of 192 runners. Running strong for the Pirates were the junior duo of Alexis Reichardt and Emma Meyer who finished 23rd and 24th overall. Jill Cavanaugh was 46 and Claire Goodman rounded out the scoring for the Pirates with 75th place finish. Making their 2016 varsity debuts were freshman Shelby Ortyn and junior Emma Strohl who filled in admirably for missing teammates. 4 P age

5 Boys Cross Country by Mark Pasten GIRLS VARSITY Volleyball by Mark Rybakowicz No Team Pic Available at this time. Come cheer on the Varsity Volleyball team this Saturday at their home Invite. Games begin at 9am. Boys Varsity Football by John Bunyan September 17, 2016 UW Parkside Angel Invite The boys traveled to UW Parkside on Saturday to compete in the Angel Invitational which was hosted by St. Catherine High School. The 30 team meet was won by Kenosha Bradford with 102 points and the Pirates finished in 5th place with 177 points. It was a great team effort by the top 5 runners who were tightly packed together in the standings. Of the 206 runners in the boys varsity race here are how the Pirates stacked up: 25th Miles Stimac 17:30, 27th Isaiah Holland 17:35, 29th Ben Claas 17:36, 46th Brett Grisar 17:55, 50th Jonny Bischoff 17:57, 106 Charles DeMerit 19:01. The boys will have a week off from competition and return on October 1st to compete in the Paper Maker Invitational at Kimberly High School No other information provided. September 16, 2016 vs Cedarburg Port Washington 55 Cedarburg 34 The Pirates have not made the playoffs since 2008, when a junior quarterback named Josh Gasser led the team to Level 3. In order to end the streak, the team knew it would have to get by one of the North Shore's big four programs, and Friday night it finally happened. The Pirates blew open a close game with four straight touchdowns in the second and third quarters to win over Cedarburg. Port Washington amassed 362 rushing yards, with Matt Ruppel (150 yards, 3 TD) and Tanner Orten (127 yards, 2 TD) each topping the century mark. With Friday night s performance, Wisconsin Sports Network has listed the Pirates as a nominee for this week s U.S Army Team of the Week. Come cheer on your Pirates at home this Friday against Homestead! 5 P age

6 Boys Varsity Soccer by Sean O Brien GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVE by Melissa Hoogester swam by the girls and even more fun had! Tomorrow we head to Cedarburg for our dual and then onto Plymouth on Saturday for their invite! September 13, 2016 vs Cedarburg The Port Washington Boys Soccer Team continued its excellent start to the season by earning a draw with Cedarburg on Tuesday. The bulldogs are currently ranked #5 in the state and are among the top teams in the always challenging North Shore Conference. The game was a back and forth game with both teams getting opportunities for the win at some point. The Pirates had to claw back from two deficits to earn the tie. Charles Schlessinger continued his good form by putting pressure on the Cedarburg defense throughout the game. In the 46th minute, Charles earned the Pirates a penalty kick that Dom DeMaria calmly slotted into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. As the game progressed the Pirates needed another Charles Schlessinger effort to tie the game at 2-2 with 10 minutes left. A tremendous team effort and atmosphere made for a truly memorable and exciting game.with the tie, the Pirates are still undefeated having only given up 2 goals in their first 7 games for a record*** The Pirates continue their march through the Top 10; playing Homestead (#4 in the state) on Tuesday at home. Good Luck Pirates. The Pirates face Homestead on September 20, 2016 at Thomas Jefferson Middle School at 7pm We held on annual Pirate Invite on Saturday inviting 11 other teams. It was a great day, with awesome swims by all the girls! The day began with the 200 Medley relay team: Wichmann, Ottesen, Marinez, and Schmutzler with their best time 2:21.08! Next up was Ottesen (2:13.98 a 6 second season best!) swimming the 200 Freestyle for her team. She finished an awesome eleventh place! Wichmann (30.31 a personal best time for her!) Schmutzler (31.66 a 2 second personal best time!) Marinez (34.12 a 2 second personal best time for her!) and Hoag (53.75) all swam the 50 Freestyle for their team, all swimming awesome races!! Marinez (1:16.79 a 7 second personal best drop for her!) was up again swimming the 100 Freestyle for her team! She swam another awesome race! Our 200 Freestyle relay team: Wichmann, Schmutzler, Marinez and Ottesen swam an exciting race dropping 8 seconds on their best time 2:05.46! Wichmann (1:22.77 a two second season best drop!) swam an exciting race in the 100 Backstroke! Our last swimmer of the day was Ottesen, and she really saved the best for last! It was her event, the 100 Breaststroke, and she swam an outstanding race finishing THIRD place earning herself a medal and breaking her own school record in the 100 Breaststroke! The whole team erupted for her! We all were so excited! It was the perfect end to an outstanding meet! All best times 6 P age
