2 Upcoming Activities & Meetings October 2 Board Meeting: The meeting will be start at 6:30 p.m. at Big Lion Kevin Tomasu s Leawood office. The location is Hunter Family Vision, 4700 W. 135 th Street, Leawood, KS 66224, which is just West of Roe at 135 th Street. October 9 Member Meeting: The Oak Room in Leawood City Hall, starting at 6:00 p.m. with social time and then a 6:30 p.m. business meeting. The program will be given by the School Nurse at Holy Spirit Catholic School, Julie Schropp, and Lion Kevin Tomasu on vision screening. October 12 & 13 Leawood Lions Pancake Days: Our Annual Pancake Days will be on Friday, October 12 (10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m.) and Saturday, October 13 (7:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m.). November 1 Salvation Army Hope Celebration luncheon: The Salvation Army of Johnson County is having a fundraiser and thank you luncheon to honor the volunteers who help the Salvation Army. More details are on the last page of this newsletter. Since we partner with the Salvation Army for a major holiday project we hope several Leawood Lions will be able to attend: November 13 Member Meeting: The Oak Room in Leawood City Hall, starting at 6:00 p.m. with social time and then a 6:30 p.m. business meeting. The program will be presented by Kory Strand of the Salvation Army leading us into the holiday bell ringing project of the Club. Club Meetings Report September 11 meeting: 1st VP Ken Green welcomed 14 members and 2 guests to the meeting. We were invited to sample three decadent desserts, compliments of Mt. Moriah, Newcomer and Freeman Funeral Home. Lion Matt Roening led us in a prayer remembering all those in our world who lost their lives, or were forever touched, on 9/11. Lion Jim Rochelle led the Induction Ceremony to welcome three new members. Lion Jim informed the new members of the Lions program emphasis on sight preservation, originating with a challenge from Helen Keller. Members are encouraged to sell as many tickets as possible, but there is a minimum of at least ten tickets sold or bought (to hand out) for each member. 3 Zone Chair and Leawood Lion Vania Castro introduced two guests, Lions Sylvia Hufferd and Michele Hufferd, mother and daughter members of the Miami County Traveling Lions Club. Lion Vania also presented information about the Kansas Yellow Dot program was introduced to the Club. You can visit her website at: Then the members enjoyed a program on Scout Troop 10 which is sponsored by the Club. Lion Ken Green recognized Colonel Scott Weaver, John McCabe and Herb Strain for their longstanding volunteerism with BSA Troop 10 which was fundamental to the Troop s current infrastructure and leadership abilities. Lion Michele Hufferd sharing highlights of her very impressive resume Club News Troop 10 Scout Update: For his Eagle Project, Harrison Powell has organized fellow Troop 10 scouts and students to help him assemble his eyeglass collection boxes and they are in place in the Blue Valley Schools. He hopes to collect 1,000 pairs that he will then turn over to our Club! Scoutmaster Randal Blair, and Committee Chair Pramod Pagadala BSA Troop 10 Scoutmaster Randal Blair, and Committee Chair Pramod Pagadala, presented a power point overview of Troop 10 and its many accomplishments. The Troop has current membership of 210 scouts with 125 Adult Volunteers. Troop 10 scouts performed more than 1,200 hours of community service this year. Currently the Troop has 30 active Eagle Scout and 75 Life Scouts. Family Scouting will officially kickoff February Sally Jercha, Scoutmaster for the new BSA Troop 10 Girls Troop, also shared with the Club that 27 girls are currently interested in joining the new Troop and she outlined plans for upcoming activities. Lion Michele Hufferd spoke to the Club about her candidacy for International Director. She shared her family s history in the Lions and her record of Lion s service at many levels of leadership. We were very active last year and plan to continue. { } Page 3

Bring them to Board or Member Meetings. 3. Contact him to arrange a pickup point that is convenient for both. He is fine with dropping by your home or business. Club dues are payable now. If you have not paid yet please remit with the invoice sent to you by Treasurer Tom Shearer. Dues are $110 for individuals and $160 for families (member plus spouse member). Eye Glass Collection Update: Chairman Brian Harris reports that we collected 2,204 pairs of glasses in July & August. He recommends three ways to get eye glasses to him: Treasurer Tom Shearer 8600 Broadmoor Overland Park, KS Board Meetings Reminder: Scheduled Board Meetings are usually held on the 1 st Tuesday of each month. Every Club member is welcome to attend. Please let the Big Lion know if you are coming to a Board meeting to ensure proper room set-up. Committee Chairs should submit their reports prior to the meeting and if an oral presentation is desired that should be noted.
