Palatine Lions Club P. O. Box 441 Palatine, IL Have you Visited our Club website lately???? Club inducts 3 New members The 3 newest members of our Club were inducted by Past President Phill Matthews at the recent Inaugural on June 5th. We are very happy to have these 3 fine people as members and know that they will be an asset to Lions. Thank you for wanting to serve and thank you to your sponsors for inviting you. The new members are pictured below after receiving their New Member Packets and Lions pins. Left to Right they are Joy Busse, Amy Peckham and Stephan Warren. In true Palatine Lions Club fashion they already have a job. Lion Joy has expressed an interest in assisting with the Newsletter. Lion Amy was inducted as next year s Secretary shortly after her induction as a new member. Lion Stephan was already working. That is how he met Lions Ray and Tom at the Township offices on a work project. Congratulations to all 3 of you. Our Club will do whatever we can to answer your questions and to ensure that you are productive members of our community representing the Palatine Lions Club. WE SERVE. Volume 2, Issue 10 June 8, 2008 Inside this issue: July 4th Parades Pg 2 News Flash. Pg 2 Purple & Gold AND Kentucky Derby It s Official - Here are Next Year s Officers Pictures & More Pictures Club Shirt Order Information - Last chance to order for this Summer Pg 3 Pg 4 Pgs 5&6 Pg 7 Hearing Bus Results - Our Club hosted the Lions of Illinois Foundation (LIF) Hearing Bus on Saturday May 24th at the Palatine Township offices. We were able to screen 40 people in just 4 hours. Thank you to Lions Tom and Ray for working at the screening and Palatine Township for hosting our event at their facilities.
Page 2 Newsletter Editor - Stop the Presses! News FLASH. Yes this is your editor s FINAL EDITION of the Newsletter, but one of our newest members, Joy Busse, has g r a c i o u s l y volunteered to assist with the publication next year. Maybe an older/more experienced member could work w i t h J o y t o determine what needs to be published and to help write the newsletter or maybe it could be a Club effort and multiple Lions could help. NOTE: The dinner meeting on WEDNESDAY June 18th will be a GUEST/SPOUSE night. We will be hosting our Scholarship winners and would like to have a good showing. Listen to Calling Post for more details. Fourth of July Parades Update Lion Marty Kelley advises that for the Inverness Parade anyone interested in marching to represent the Palatine Lions should meet on July 4th at 12:30 at Inverway and Baldwin. (There will be parking available on the West side of Inverway.) The short parade will step off at around 1:00 and ends at North Park. The plans are for those marching to wear our new Club shirts and distribute candy. Come even if you don t have a Lions shirt. The next day we will dress in our clown costumes and give out candy. Plan to meet at Lion Jim Baumgartner s home (609 N Benton) by 8:00 AM. If you have never been a clown in the parade you should be aware that it is very fun. The parade only lasts a couple of hours. You will make many kids happy with the free candy. You will get some exercise and you will be publicizing the fact that our Lions Club is active in Palatine. Feel free to bring friends, grandkids, etc to walk too. Make a note of these upcoming events to put on your calendar now. SOCIAL & COMMUNITY Hearing Bus-Our Club s SECOND date for hosting the Hearing Bus will be Saturday August 23rd from 8:00 AM to Noon at the Palatine Farmer s Market. What a nice added benefit to the community. If you can volunteer to work at the event you should contact 1st VP Tony Cinquegrani or President Tom Peckham. WE SERVE. Our Club is working with local grade school district 15 and Palatine Vision Center on a newly mandated program by the state of IL. Incoming kindergarten children will be required to have a full eye exam prior to entering school. There will be children whose families cannot afford the exam and our Club will be involved in assisting. Since this is the first year we are not sure of all the details. Costs are TBD. FUNDRAISING Candy Days - October 10th & 11th will be here before you know it. Why not start asking your friends, neighbors, family members or a group you know from church or a group your kids are grandkids are involved with to help out during the weekend? A couple of hours of standing on a street corner or at a store front can help fund our many Lions of Illinois Foundation programs, such as the Hearing Bus, Camp Lions, etc.
Volume 2, Issue 10 Page 3 Kentucky Derby Party - May 3rd Lion Phill and Daphne Matthews hosted their annual Kentucky Derby Party. Daphne once again did a yeoman s job in ensuring that the party went well. Everyone that attended said they had another great time. The Matthews paddock may be too small in future years if the number of Lions and guests keeps expanding. Thank you Daphne. You did a great job. Lion President BC, call me Colonel, Coleman and his friend Donna seem to be relaxing and enjoying some Mint Juleps during the Party. Below our own senior stallion Lion Tom and Dorothy are resting up prior to their gallop around the track at the recent Kentucky Derby Party. To the Left Lion Frank Arnieri is being dragged to the starting gate by Kentucky Derby Party Hostess Daphne Matthews. Place your bets on whether Lion Frank finished the race or not. BTW Lion Frank, nice hat and polo mallet. Winners for May $100 Sandra Coleman $25 Robin Everson $25 Mike Klanang $10 Jim Dorsch Purple & Gold $10 Ken Coleman $10 Lambert DeCardy $10 Marty Kelley $10 Jackie Lowry
Volume 2, Issue 10 Page 4 New Officers Inducted The slate of officers for the 2008/2009 Board of Directors was inducted by Lion Dick Hawaii 5-0 Brumm on June 5th. The evening began with a great Social and refreshment kickoff hosted by Lion Dick and Bev Brumm. A big thank you goes to the Brumm s for hosting because they just returned a few days ago, as well as to 3rd Vice President Lion Patti Curtis for all of her hard work and efforts in coordinating the evening and working with Palm Court on food selections, etc. Lion Ray was his usual fun-generating Tail Twister self. There were raffle prizes galore. There was a hint of insider winning though. Lion Patti is, of course, Lion Ray s sister. Her husband Clinton won about every prize that evening. Lucky in love and in Tail Twister Raffles I guess. Any way you look at it the evening was great. The Officers next year will be President Tom Peckham 1st VP Tony Cinquegrani 2nd VP Martin Kelley 3rd VP Patti Curtis Secretary Amy Peckham Treasurer Mark Landhauser Lion Tamers Norb and Norma Schmaus Tail Twister Ray Maggi 2 Year Director Jim Cooper 2 Year Director Phill Matthews 1 Year Director Ev Charlier 1 Year Director Paul Pioch Immediate Past President BC Coleman
Page 5 Palatine Lions Club Pictures Above Lion President-elect Tom Peckham & his Board are inducted by Lion Dick Brumm. (The good looking guy standing with his back to you.) To the Left-Lion BC is so excited about having Lion Joy as a new member he almost lost his tie. To the Right-Sharon Maggi is showing off her hat at the recent Kentucky Derby Party. Is it my imagination or is Sharon making a fist to slug the paparazzi? To the Left-I don t think this photograph taken at the recent District Convention during Lion Paul s acceptance speech has any hidden meaning that you were trying to communicate to the Lions in the District, does it Lion BC????
Page 6 More Palatine Lions Club Pictures Below-The 2 best bartenders in the Lions world, Lions BC Coleman & Bruce Thill on their 15 minute break while serving drinks at the District Convention VIP dinner Friday night. Their bartending prowess was superior. The incoming DG s Club provides this each yr. To the Right-The Dragon s formidable appearance in the Club s combined Hospitality Room with the Arlington Heights Club. The room was great and enjoyed by all. Below are some of the Convention revelers prior to breakfast on Sunday morning. Look at all of the coffee. Does that indicate assistance was needed to recoup from a hard Saturday night???
