3 PWHS CHARACTER COUNTS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Brett Grisar Brett Grisar is the boys cross country team's athlete of the week. Brett has been a four year varsity letter winner in cross country. He was a key member of last year s team which finished in 3rd place at the state championship. This season Brett was named captain of the team because of his dedication to the team and the leadership that he provides. Brett has always given his all at practice and in competitions, but this year Brett has also been a vocal leader for the team. In addition to his athletic prowess, Brett is also a top notch student. Above all else is the fact that Brett is an outstanding person. He exemplifies the six pillars of the Character Counts program; Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. A perfect example of this character came out at our last competition. Brett started the race in good position, in the top 10 of the 140 runners at Port Washington Invitational. Then he got shoved down to the ground near the 400 meter mark and was stepped on/tripped over by a few of the runners that were behind him. By the time he was able to pull himself together, the majority of the field had gotten ahead of him. Instead of stopping and feeling sorry for himself or getting up and seeking revenge on the athlete who tripped him, Brett did the right thing, he got back and continued to compete. In the end Brett made his way back up to an 11th place finish. Afterwards Brett was still pretty upset by the actions of the other athlete, but he was pleased with his effort and I was proud of his actions. Congratulations Brett!! 3 P age

4 PWHS CHARACTER COUNTS Girls Cross Country by Joe Adamak ATHLETE OF THE WEEK The girl s team will run on Saturday, October 13 th at West Bend High School for conference. Jill Cavanaugh The inspirational leader of the Port Washington Cross Country team is Jill Cavanaugh. Jill has been the leader from the day she first started running with team prior to her freshman year of high school. She has been the leader because of her ability to maintain focus throughout the off season, during workouts and in races. The older girls admired her dedication to training, her excellence and her ability to maintain a pace and now the younger girls look up to those same traits. Her leadership style is to lead by example. She uses her actions to guide the Pirates through the perils of an arduous Cross Country season. With an innate understanding of the big picture, Jill epitomizes the saying it is a marathon, not a sprint - or as Jill s dad likes to say let the rabbits go. Racing begins at 10:00am. Come out and support the cross country teams. Jill defines what it means to be a runner at Port Washington more that running defines Jill. Her teammates admire her work ethic both in the classroom and on the athletic field. Jill is an exemplary student who challenges herself with a difficult workload. Jill enjoys the challenge of learning new things. Her attitude has led to a multiple of successes. Not only does Jill carry a GPA of over 4.0, she has qualified for the WIAA State Meet in Cross Country where she has earned all-state academic honors. The last four years have been the Jill Cavanaugh era of Cross Country at Port Washington and her legacy of excellence will help to guide future runners who don the green and white. Congratualtions Jill! 4 P age

Although both games were a struggle, we were able to bring some energy onto the court for senior night and parent appreciation Night on Thursday. Over the weekend the varsity girls played a round robin tournament where we took third. This week we have our last conference game versus Grafton wrapping up the season for the freshman with conference tournaments around the corner. Big shout out to our seniors Hannah, Jane, Jordan and Avery as we wrap up our season. 6 Boys Varsity Soccer by Sean O Brien GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVE by Dani Peiffer Girls Varsity Tennis by Melonie Zielinski Oct 4, 2018 PIRATES: 0 WEST BEND WEST: 1 The Pirates took on West Bend last week and came away with 1 win and 1 loss. The Pirates welcomed West Bend East on senior night. The Pirates recognized the seniors before the game: Ben Hughes, Skylar Shafer, Ben Shively, Alex Poull, Patrick Zamora, Eric Marquette, Jake Markiewicz, Tanner Sauer, and Wyatt Roller. The seniors certainly put an authoritative stamp on the game claiming all 4 goals. Ben Hughes picked up the hat trick and Skylar Shafer added a goal as well. Excellent effort all around and a great team victory! On Thursday the Pirates faced the Spartans. The Spartans put the Pirates under pressure right from the start and the team couldn't find a rhythm, Port had chances however, as the Spartans had to clear a ball of the line to preserve the shutout going into half-time. It was not to be for the Pirates, a goal was conceded in the 63' and the Spartans held on for the win. Come out to Grafton on Tuesday as the Pirates look to keep the Timm Snider Memorial Trophy Good Luck Pirates Sep 25, 2018 Meet Highlights: The girls did well for their third meet in 6 days.
