1 A u t u m n Inside this issue: Tri-Lakes Birchbark President s Letter 1 Diner s Club 2 Garden Club 3 New Neighbors 3 President s Letter I started my Spring letter asking everyone to pray for rain. Well, let me say I think it kind of worked. While all of our lakes are still low we are only one inch short of the normal annual rainfall as of today. Some of our longer residents have told me that we shouldn't worry as this low water situation happens every ten years and then everything returns to normal. I was able to get my boat in at Demontreville public landing in the middle of August so it has ended up to be a short fishing season for me. Even with all the rain we had we still lucked out with great weather for the swimming lessons, the annual tree give away event and the annual Tri-Lakes ski event. There are reports on both of these events included in this newsletter, but I want to be sure to thank Mary & Dave Johnson for all of the time they devoted to teaching our youngsters to swim and Joe Keisling, Faye and Jim Carpenter & John Hamerly for another fantastic effort to teach those who want to learn to ski, showing them how it is done, and then proving it by putting on another outstanding performance. I am not sure what the future holds for this important annual event as Joe Keisling has sold his home, which has been the location for both the training and performance for a number of years. We can only hope an alternative site will be found so this tradition can continue in our community. I want to welcome two new members to our board. Jon Early & Justin Bloyer have both agreed to serve on the board and I know their new ideas and insight will help us to have a more successful organization. We need additional new members who are willing to donate some time to helping us have a better community as Leanne Barry has decided to step down as the person in charge of our Diners Club events and Jackie Peterson and her family have decided to let someone new handle our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Both of these ladies have done an outstanding job for the last few years and I hope they know how much we all appreciate it. If you or anyone you know would be willing to take either of these events on for the coming year please contact me. We are still planning to publish a new directory for the Tri-Lakes area this year and have it ready for distribution at our annual meeting in February. Jon Early, our new board member, has agreed to help us put this together but the preparation and confirmation of everyone s name, phone number, address and still needs to be completed. Thanks to Greg Hall, Linda Ott and Ruth Pallmeyer for their help. I hope you all have a beautiful fall and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming social events. Bob Van Zandt Swimming Lessons 4 Ski show 5 Diner s Club Upcoming Events Attention Tri-Lakes Members If you or anyone you know would be willing to take charge of our Diners Club events or Easter Egg Hunt for the coming year please contact Bob Van Zandt. Thanks! 6
2 Diner s Club Updates ATTENTION: There is a prize give-away at each Diner s Club and you cannot win if you don t attend! If you ve missed out on the above events, think about heading out to one of the following events that are taking place soon in your area! ALL ARE WELCOME! Door Prize Jim Wilson wins a $25 gift certificate Many thanks to those of you who have volunteered to host a Diner s Club event this year. There were no shortages of volunteers and so far we have had quite a good time celebrating the seasons living in the Tri- Lakes area. Thanks also for those of you who have attended these events and made them so memorable! February Mike and Linda Carpenter kicked off the season, hosting a Diner s Club at their home near Lake Demontreville. The Carpenters have hosted several Diner s Club events since moving into the neighborhood 5 years ago. April Dean and Bonnie Dean and Bonnie Wilson Mike and Linda Carpenter Wilson hosted the April Diner s Club. They also hosted a party in 2007! I hope you didn t miss this event. They own such a unique home and sure know how to host a party! May May took us to the home of Karen and Denny Lein on Lake Demontreville. There was a great turn out at this event and a lot of food and beverage consumed. (So sorry I missed this one!) June Greg and Kathy Lohmer hosted a fantastic party. The weather was just beautiful. Guests enjoyed spending most of the evening outside (finally!) At the time of the party, Greg and Kathy were awaiting the birth of a grandchild! Congratulations. Dean and Kathy Lohmer July Unfortunately, July s anticipated Pontoon Party was cancelled due to those pesky Minnesota tornados! We ll try again next year Thanks to Robbi Dillon and Debbi Dean for all their effort in planning this event. Cam and Leanne Barry, Maureen Van Zandt, Becky and John August Larry and Carol Paul hosted the August Diner s Club at their newly remodeled house on Lake Demontreville. There were well over 30 people there. Larry and Carol Paul Ron Warner won the prize give-away. The men were thankful he had a big TV viewing room with the Vikings game on! Thanks again for those who hosted and those who attended Diner s Club events. Leanne and Cameron Barry Page 2
3 Tea in the Tri-Lakes Garden Club Among the many activities enjoyed by the Tri-Lakes Garden Club, the summer tea is a favorite. On August 22, Emily Brenengen of Deer Pond Trail welcomed the group into her home and garden. She prepared a classic summer tea with finger sandwiches, onion pie, chocolate cake, and other petite goodies. After this lovely lunch served on fine china on the patio, the group took a tour of Emily¹s newly designed garden. It was a perfect day for a stroll. The next and last Tri-Lakes Garden Club event is wreath making on Saturday November 6 at Debbie Steiner¹s house. Guests are welcome, so contact Bonnie Wilson (bonwilson@usfamily.net) if you would like to attend. classic summer tea with finger sandwiches THANKS! 4 2010 Swimming Lessons Tri-Lakes Swimming Lessons! What a wonderful slice of summer on Lake Jane! If you haven t participated, you really need to round up your kids/grandkids/nieces & nephews and get enrolled in 2011 Swimming Lessons. We had two marvelous July weeks of lessons with 62 kids many of whom attended lessons for the first time this year! It s a great way to meet neighbors, connect kids who attend different schools and don t know one another, enjoy the sunshine, and LEARN TO SWIM IN THE LAKE! Plan now for next year! Lessons will be held Monday thru Friday from July 11 to July 22 on Lake Jane. Members of the Tri-Lakes Association only pay $25 per child; non-members pay $35. Tri-Lakes Birchbark Page 4
5 Tri Lakes Ski Show Tri Lakes Ski Show is a family fun oriented ski group for people in the Tri lakes area. If you already know how to ski, or if you are learning, you have all opportunities to jump right in and get skiing. There are no age limits. Tri Lakes Ski meets every Tuesday and Wednesday in July and the beginning of August. Starting from 6:30PM sunset. On Wednesday nights, after ski and clean up, there is also a pizza party! There are numbers of different acts that are done at the annual show. Some include: Line of Ten, Doubles, Slalom line, Knee board and regular Pyramid, Knee board tricks line, Juggling act, Skimmer line, Ballet line, etc. At the end of every show, there is dancing on the beach, games, volleyball, a potluck, etc.!
