10 A Message from the Editor Welcome to February. This is the Valentine love issue of Bay Window Magazine. Actually, every issue is a labor of love. Our writers, editors, art director, and printers take their work as seriously as if they were publishing The New Yorker or Vanity Fair. More importantly, we have a love connection with you, our members, subscribers, visiting readers and trusted advertisers. We know very well how much you value this publication, and we are honored to bring it out each month. This is our 67th year running; the longest continuously published magazine on the Orange Coast. In this issue, our much loved columnist Carole Pickup shares her interview with two Bay Club couples, John and Anne Wortmann and Noel and Kathy Hamilton, revealing their insights into long and successful relationships. Time does fly and with our first month of events and activities complete, it will feel like no time at all before spring will have sprung. January was a whirlwind of fun little events, of which the Scotch Dinner, celebrating the Scottish Poet Robert Burns, was my favorite. That evening I got to don my full dress kilt and celebrate the legendary words of a poet that changed history, and at the same time we had some darn good Macallen scotch! For the first time, we hosted this special dinner in the, and we have hopes to bring the wine dinners for the Members back and into the Grill also. We feel that this move will truly enhance the Member experience by showcasing Chef David s exceptional talents alongside some wonderful wines. Many of you have seen the refresh of our Membership offices, and if you haven t, stop on in when you can. Thank you to our ownership for green lighting the project and to Member Bill Blaine and his team to develop the palette of colors and furnishings. Just a few things that we did include: all new furniture in the entryway, new carpet, paint, a complete refresh of the kitchen area, a full length floor to ceiling cabinet in the main meeting room, additional storage space for all the props that we use for events and all new framed artwork. Some other items we are working on include a new back office accounting program that will allow much more ease of access for our Members and for any billing inquiries that you may have, new carpet for the hallways in the Clubhouse, replacing more of the metal rail around the Member pool and replacing it with more glass and the pool deck surface gets a face lift is going to be another great year of improvements, and we hope that you, our Members, enjoy them. 23 Balboa Bay Club Junior Guards Program The Balboa Bay Club and the OCACS Staff will again offer our popular Conditioning and Preparation for Junior Lifeguards program. We have created a program that has over 90% success rate in qualifying children for Junior Lifeguards. The training will focus on conditioning, stroke instruction, and strategy to help develop the skills necessary to pass the Junior Lifeguard Qualification test. Change only happens with awareness. If you don t know what you need to change it is impossible to make the shift. Notice how you speak to yourself from the minute you open your eyes. Do you wake with judgement or gratitude? Do you wake with bitter anticipation of the day to come or do you look forward to what is ahead? This tone you are setting inside your head acts as a ripple effect into the rest of the day. Believe me, I know it is easy to stay positive if everything in your life is flowing smoothly; the real growth comes when you knock yourself out of your negative patterns and hop on the gratitude train, especially when you are having a challenging morning. I suggest using music. Music evokes emotion, and it is up to you to DJ a life changing tune. So turn it on and turn it up! If you need to be quiet in the morning due to others sleeping, use headphones. Step 2 Find creative resources for keeping this positive flow going through the day. Get your pen and Post-it notes out. Write yourself love notes and stick them on the bathroom mirror. This may seem a little silly to you at first, but you wouldn t think twice about doing it for your partner. As a matter of fact, you can include them in all of these suggestions. Just don t loose sight of yourself. Step 3 Before bed instead of replaying the entire day and going over the things that went wrong or the list of things to do the next day, play some relaxing music and hop on the gratitude train. Become very detailed. Think about how much you love the softness of your pillow and sheets, how lovely your home is, and how nice it was to take gentle steps into falling in love with yourself and your own life. Step 4 Spend your money on experiences over items. Items will only give you pleasure for a limited time. An experience will give you the memory and pleasure of a lifetime. When we depart this life, our pockets are empty and it is the memories that were strengthened by love we are taking with us. As Steve Jobs once said, Material things lost can be found. But one thing you can never find when you lose: life. Try these techniques for the entire month of Feburary. Start with one day and then add a week. The more you can pay attention to how you are living the faster the change will come. How would your life be different if you were soulfully in love with yourself and next time someone handed you a compliment you actually said, Thank You instead of turning it down? We live in a society that values things, items and not being too full of yourself. That promotes a very shallow way of living. Do we tell our children every time I tell you how fantastic you are, be sure to tell me I m wrong because you don t deserve that compliment? No, of course we don t. However, as adults this is how we treat ourselves. Fall deeply in love with yourself and enjoy the company you keep in the quietest moments, and your life will unfold like a blooming radiant flower. 26 NBCC NEWS Newport Beach Country Club By Casey Kaut General Manager Newport Beach Country Club Winter 2016 presents a bit of a conundrum for all of us here at Newport Beach Country Club. On the one hand, celebrating the recent rains feels natural to us as Californians united in our hopes that El Niño can conquer the unprecedented drought and remedy the state s ongoing water crisis. Conversely, the driving rains from January s multi-day storms threaten to slow the progress on our new building and delay the Grand Opening of our long-awaited clubhouse. Of course, the dark clouds rolling in from the West carry with them the added silver lining of a healthier golf course in desperate need of the recent influx of moisture. So there s that, and count me among those conflicted over the recent wet weather. Regarding the Clubhouse Construction, many members have inquired recently as to an official update on the progress of the build and an updated planned opening date. Unfortunately, the construction team cannot provide us with an exact date, but as of this writing, our objective of a late-spring opening remains. Recent progress milestones include the planting of trees and landscaping around the parking lot, installation of the staircases in both the main lobby area and ballroom entrances, and we recently took delivery of the custom pizza oven that will be centerpiece of the dining area adjacent to the main lounge! (Chef Lonnie with his typical enthusiasm has been sleeping in it.) Additionally, window and glass installation should be completed in the coming weeks, which will allow for more extensive work in inclement weather. In summary, the project is commencing beautifully and the team at NBCC is busy preparing for the opening. In more club news, we would like to congratulate all our participants in the Men s Kickoff Tournament. Held on Saturday, January 9th, it was the official start to the Men s 2016 tournament season and a huge success with over 100 members participating. January also brings us the start of our Men s Team Play competition. We wish our NBCC Men s Team, led by Captain Jeremy Skiver the best of luck. 24 FEBRUARY 2016

27 BBC Boating BBC COVER STORY Story and Photos By Sue Edelstein BBC members Michael Costa, his wife Stephanie, son Luca (three years old) and daughter Sailor (one and a half years old) are the Bay Window s Loving Valentine Family for Besides having the cutest kids in America, Stephanie is pregnant with their third child and Dad has a heart full of joy when he talks about his children, who are playful with each other on the boat or on the beach. He and Stephanie met on the peninsula at Sid s Blue Beet Restaurant four months after she moved here from Oklahoma in Both are USC alumni. She got her masters in teaching and he graduated from the entrepreneurial business program. Mike proposed to Stephanie in Catalina (the island of romance) on a 60 foot Sunseeker. They were married in Napa in 2009 and have had the opportunity to travel lots before settling down and starting their family. Then there is his job. Michael has discovered a way to make a living with his most passionate hobby: yachting. He owns a company called SeaNet, which provides a unique service of shared ownership structure for leading boat brands. He fell in love with the sea with his dad on a boat and this continued throughout his childhood. Michael came from a big BBC family of seven brothers and sisters who spent many 4th of July s and other occasions at the Balboa Bay Club and had a few boats like a Riva 42 and Riva 62 at this marina. Typically, SeaNet fractional yachts have three to four owners per boat most of which are crewed. This gives flexibility for owners to enjoy the vessel as if they had their own whole boat. A lot of yachts in harbors around the world are not used that often, so this program allows an owner to use it 25% or 33% of available days per year, depending on the program they sign up for; and they have the luxury of stepping on and off the boat, without the worry of maintenance. If a boat sits around too long, sometimes it doesn t work properly, or everybody scatters once the yacht returns and owners are left with the tough job of cleaning up and shutting down the boat. The program includes concierge services, captain and crew services, maintenance, and other aspects associated with owning, operating, and maintaining the yachts. SeaNet takes the hassle out of yachting, so that leisure time is maximum pleasure. There are three such yachts at the BBC. Michael states that this is one of the finest places to have a boat moored on the west coast. New BBC members are signed up with every shared interest in a vessel docked at the club. About 20 members have joined this way over the years. SeaNet s fleet includes Bennetti, Absolute, Sunseeker, and VanDutch Yachts. Many of these yachts have regional destinations, such as summers in Newport Beach and winters in Cabo. The global program is where yachts spend a majority of their time between the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Bahamas. Owners can fly to destinations to cruise these areas. A 116 Bennetti Mederraneo is pretty impressive for the person who desires a $15,000,000 boat. To own this yacht would cost a fractional owner about $1,875,000 and $180,000 per year for the 5 star level of service. This would provide four weeks a year with the ability to sell their share someday, if desired. Programs that get you on the water start at $72,000 a year for a Van Dutch which includes 36 days a year with a captain and all operating expenses. The magnificent Van Dutch featured in this article is breathtaking and the unique color sums up the feel of this luxury boat: Bentley Blue. When asked what his favorite personal trips world-wide have been, Michael referred to a 93 Bennetti that he and Stephanie met in southern Italy on the Amalfi Coast. Traveling to ports like Portofino and Capri were spectacular. When in those locations, they could go to restaurants or have their own chef aboard create marvelous meals with local ingredients. Sardinia, the big island off the coast of Italy was magnificent. Another choice location is Exhuma, a chain of stunning islands in the Bahamas with unforgettable secluded beaches. Locally, for the busy Costa family, sitting at anchor in Emerald Bay, a twenty minute cruise from Newport Harbor is delightful for them. Across the United States, approximately 150 million Valentine s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine s Day the second most popular card sending holiday after Christmas. Around the world candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Who was Saint Valentine? There are many stories. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. The most popular legend suggests that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons. While in prison, Valentine actually sent the first Valentine greeting to a young girl he fell in love with who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter and signed from your Valentine. This expression is still used even today. Now, let s learn a little about our very own live Valentines right here at BBC. Their love stories are special to behold. Get the Kleenex ready. John & Anne Wortmann John and Anne met when John was checking on a site he was developing above Pasadena. He saw Anne get out of a black Jeep wearing a red dress. He said, That was it. I fell in lust at first sight. Well he didn t really meet her then but got to know her mom who was overseeing flooring for the site. From there, they had their first date and they both fell in love at first sight. Anne told her brother after that first date, I m going to marry him, so the old adage Love at first sight rings true here. After a trip together to the French and Italian Rivieras, John knew he couldn t live without her. John asked her to marry him on Valentine s Day. He handed her this wrapped box (she was hoping for a little box) but when she unwrapped it the box said Rolex and she was disappointed there was no marriage proposal, but when she looked at the back of her watch this was etched Anne will you marry me? John, and the date. They were married at the Ritz Carlton while Henry Schielein was the General Manager. They have been married twenty-five years and have two children. Daughter Devon, 23, graduated from the University of Arizona with a major in Communications. Son John, is a sophomore at University of Arizona studying pre-law. Both were born at Hoag. John Sr. is honored to be Chairman of the Board of Governors at the BBC. As chairman, his job is to talk with membership and then work with ownership/management to improve and enhance the member experience. He is also a private investor. Anne grew up in La Canada/Flintridge. In 1976, she was crowned Queen of the Rose Parade the bi centennial year. She was a Rams Cheerleader in 78 and 79 and a USC graduate. She is VP of the 1221 Club. She swims at the club most days. They designed and built their dream home on Lido Isle together. They raised their family there. They lived at the BBC while building their home. John says, Anne is the most fun, smart, beautiful, kind and loving person inside and out. What keeps their marriage strong? They say their marriage and family is top priority along with trust, honesty and similar values. Every night is date night with these two. Their favorite song is Your Song by Elton John. Favorite color is blue and 21 Oceanfront by Newport Pier is a favorite restaurant. John says, I try to think how to make my wife s day better every day. 26 FEBRUARY 2016

29 BBC PROFILE Noel and Kathy Hamilton Kathy and Noel met in Dallas, Texas after college. Kathy graduated from Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee and Noel from Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. They met through one of Noel s frat brothers at 8.0 bar. Noel said, I thought she was the most beautiful girl I ve ever seen. A very big name in the political world was getting married. All their friends were invited to the wedding but somehow they didn t make the cut. Kathy had just broken up with a longtime boyfriend and enter Noel, good timing. Noel owned a boat, which to Kathy was better than a car. Besides, she thought Noel was very cute. They had about a year courtship. In 1985 they were married in Carefree, Arizona and honeymooned in San Diego and San Francisco. They settled in Texas where Noel was working at Capital Bank and Kathy in real estate. After three years, they decided to move to Southern California. Kathy wanted to try her hand in the movie business. She was already a SAG member, so she decided to go on ahead of Noel. He needed to sell their house and finish up things at Capital. Kathy had some acting roles, bit parts as she puts it in several films. In a Disney film called The Rocketeer, and she played a waitress in LA Story. After a short while, she decided to pass on the Hollywood scene. By then Noel had moved out to California and they settled into the family life. They have two children, Caroline, 23, a USC grad who is now employed at KETK, an affiliate of Fox and NBC in Tyler, Texas. Son Reed, 20, attends San Diego State. Noel who is a Christmas Eve baby is CPWA at Wells Fargo. He serves on the BBC Board of Governors. He is also Chairman of the Board of the Philharmonic for eight years. He has been active in the ICF (Irvine Children s Fund) for ten years. The organization puts on an Olympic type fundraiser once a year and twenty-six schools compete. Kathy is now President of the 1221 Club and she has been active in the Women of Chapman organization. She enjoys cooking and has written a cook book The College Try. You can get it on Amazon for $5.00. Noel s favorite dish in the book is his mother s Chicken Sopa dish. All recipes are easy and delicious. Kathy also produced and directed several musicals at Stone Elementary School. Loved it. What keeps their marriage strong? Every day they have a Happy Hour time at days end. They communicate everything about the day. They gain wisdom and suggestions from each other. Traditions are very important, family above all, companionship and friendship. Their faith is essential. They attend Irvine Presbyterian Church. Their favorite song is Annie s Song by John Denver, favorite restaurant is the Arches or The Winery. Movie favorite for Noel is Casablanca and Kathy prefers the block buster types like Raiders of the Lost Ark. What better way to end About Valentine s Day than to sing America s most popular love song It s very clear, our love is here to stay, not for a year but ever and a day. In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble; they re only made of clay. But our love is here to stay! Happy Valentine s Day. Up Your Love Game By Lana Sills Photography by Bob Hodson White Chocolate Ganache DRIZZLED OVER FROZEN BERRIES 3 cups fresh raspberries, blueberries & blackberries 1 cup white chocolate chips 3/4 cup heavy cream 1 tablespoon orange liquor or Cognac or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Place the fresh berries on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer for two hours. Bring the heavy cream to a boil. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate chips and whisk until the chocolate melts. Add the liquor or extract and mix well. Take the fruit out of the freezer about 10 minutes before serving. Divide the mixed fruit into two bowls. Drizzle the warm white chocolate sauce over the top of the berries. Decorate with a sprig of mint. The berries can be frozen and the chocolate sauce can be made one day ahead. It s not Valentine s Day until you melt some chocolate! Spend a quiet romantic evening together and sweeten up with a scrumptious White Chocolate Ganache Drizzled over Frozen Berries. This shareable aphrodisiac is perfect to toast with Champagne cocktails or a pretty in pink chilled sparkling Lambrusco. A wild mushroom Risotto and chilled oysters are starter options or a decadent caviar presentation with blinis, toast points and crème fraiche. How about starting the day with the kids making little sausage links that you dip in pancake batter (a take on a corn dog that becomes a breakfast dog!)..that s a whole lotta loving! Make Chocolate Ganache (use semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips instead of the white chocolate chips in my recipe) and dip strawberries in it, spread it over warm crepes, serve it as a dip for pretzels or just use a spoon! There is definitely no better way to eat frozen berries than bathed in warm white chocolate..a perfect way to say thanks for all the Love! 33 Second Opinion How to be Better in the Bedroom By John Jolliffe, LMFT BBC EDITORIAL Helpful hints on setting and maintaining a healthier sleep regime: Some readers of my Second Opinion articles have characterized my column as mature. Others have said my articles are not likely to be appropriate for young readers. I ll let you be the judge, but if the truth is to be written, both genders worry about how they will perform, and getting it right in the bedroom undeniably has its rewards. There are five steps to getting your bedroom ready for what we desire most. 1. Get Rid of the Clutter: Having to watch your step en route from the door to the bed is a mood killer. Glancing up to see a pile of papers you have to read for work tomorrow invariably will spoil the mood. 2. Get the Lighting Right: No one wants to do it under harsh, unflattering light. Prepare the bedroom with dim lighting. 3. The Sheets Make All the Difference: Even if your bed is just a box spring on the floor, the least you can do is make it inviting. You should own a set of nice, high thread count, really soft sheets! 4. Fill the Room with Fresh Air: Leave the window to your bedroom open during the day to fill the room with fresh air. Air in the house is usually worse than the outdoors. 5. Light Music Elevates the Mood: The music should be non-vocal, light sounds to put and keep you in the mood. The Naked Facts It all comes down to consensual choice. Some people prefer to start naked; others prefer to start moderately clothed then peel off layer after layer, depending how hot they get. Some people prefer to shower before, others like the experience of au naturale. Whatever your taste and predilection, if you want to get better in the bedroom, talk to an expert who has perfected the bedroom act of sleep. A 2013 Gallup poll found that Americans sleep an average of 6.8 hours a night, but get far less sleep than Americans got in 1974 when the average American slept 7.9 hours per night. Unfortunately, a lack of sleep, and especially chronic sleep deprivation, has serious health consequences. Sleep is incredibly important for optimal mental processing. While we sleep, our neurons rest, and the brain constructs new neural pathways, which is why sleep is so important for learning. Even mild chronic sleep deprivation can have a serious impact on creativity and innovation. Getting enough sleep is important to physical health and healing. While we sleep, our bodies produce cytokines and other natural antibodies pivotal to our immune system. Sleep deprivation increases the levels of the stress hormone cortisol, while at the same time decreasing the hormone leptin which lets our brain know you ve had enough to eat, and increasing ghrelin, an appetite stimulant. Thus, getting more sleep may be an important factor in helping you with dieting and making healthier eating choices. As you begin the New Year, one of the healthiest gifts you can give yourself is eight hours of sleep a night. You are likely to notice significant changes in your mood and an improved ability to regulate your emotions. There are many benefits to getting better in the bedroom. 1. Make Sleep a Priority: Determine to give yourself one of the most inexpensive and yet most effective health benefits available - at least 8 hours of sleep a night. 2. Develop a Sleep Routine: Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Studies have shown going to sleep at 10 p.m. and waking at 6 a.m. works best for the body s natural rhythms. Always go to bed the same way you woke up. 3. Make the Bed a Sleep Only Space: Many people convert their bed into an allpurpose area. Eating in bed, watching TV, or even working in bed can make it more difficult for you to sleep in it at night. 4. Avoid Eating and Exercising within Three Hours of Sleep: Important to remember that eating and exercise energizes the body so it is not ready for sleep. 5. Turn Off The Lights (and Devices): The sleep area must be dark and quiet. The hormone melatonin is produced in total darkness, and the longer you stay in the dark, the more melatonin the pineal gland produces. Melatonin regulates our sleep and wake cycles, destroys free radicals, increases the immune system s killer lymphocytes, and more. If you need a night light, a dim red light is best. Additionally, blue wavelength light emitted from TVs, computer screens and cell phones suppresses melatonin production more than other wavelengths, so if you want to get better in bed, avoid exposure to blue wavelength lights 2-3 hours before bedtime. 6. Listen to Your Body: Once you ve committed to a sleep routine, your body can awaken on time naturally. Listening to your body is the best measure of whether you re getting sufficient rest. 34 BBC NOSTALGIA Oh What a Night By Patrick O Donnell DOROTHY AND ANDY DEVINE PATRICK O DONNELL NUDIE COHN, ANDY DEVINE, PAT BUTTRAM, RALPH EDWARDS, AND MONTY MONTANA JOHN WAYNE,ANDY DEVINE, AND MILBURN STONE It was Andy Devine night at the big ballroom of the Disneyland Hotel 40 - years ago, and I can remember it like yesterday. My finger was on the shutter release button of my Nikon-F prepared to photograph the huge cake that was being rolled out on the stage by my boss at the Daily Pilot, editor Tom Keevil, Orange County Press Club President Sandi Mosely-Coleman and a waiter. The three -tiered cake was held up by 6 shooter guns commemorating Devine s 70th birthday and 50 years in show business. The audience of 1,172 Press Club members, celebrities and friends mostly from Newport Beach began to sing Happy Birthday. A minor hitch as the wheels on the cart caught in a slight trough in the stage floor. They jiggled the table a bit. Then it happened. The cake fell from the cart like a mass of Jello and landed almost on the feet of the birthday boy seated in a director s chair. The great dinner party was being put on by the Orange County Press Club, and I was Events Chairman that year, I have an audio tape of the celebrities remarks, so in all fairness, that helps my recollections some. Also attending the soiree were Andy s pals from Newport Beach, John Wayne and Claire Trevor. The threesome had starred together in John Ford s famous Western, Stagecoach. That movie made Wayne a superstar in He had made mostly B-pictures up to that point. Among the other celebrities attending were Guy [Wild Bill Hickock] Madison, Gunsmokes Milburn [Doc] Stone, Lew Ayers, Ralph [This Is Your Life] Edwards, and was famed cowboy actor Pat Buttram. The cake fiasco got a great laugh and cost the Press Club precisely $560. I wonder what the cake would cost in today s dollars? Andy later told Event Co-Chairmen Keevil and Jim Dean, Editor of the Register, that for one brief moment he had considered scooping up a handful of the cake mess at his feet and slinging it in the face of Buttram, who was standing near by. Andy said, But he d have returned the favor and we d ve had the biggest damn cake fight in history. Too bad it didn t happen I say. Both men had been in hundreds of B-Westerns for movies and television and were adept at throwing we ll leave it there. TV was there in large numbers covering Andy s birthday. My boss told me that for the next 24 hours his phone would ring and just one more person would congratulate him on his sterling performance. 36 BBC FAMILY 3 Social Media Terms You Must Know in 2016 By Jo Anne (Mangione) Modarelli Navigating the world of social media can be daunting for those who did not grow up with electronics. The perpetual debate about what is happening to our children s social skills with all this technology is valid; however, the skill sets of today s children vary greatly from what they were even 20 years ago. Even for me, a 30 year old who supposedly grew up with this technology, I admit that keeping up with it takes effort. Some things yes, I have chosen to conform to- while others, I have concluded are not for me. The choice is yours, but the fact is that technology is here to stay. Here are three terms you should be comfortable with as a member of society in ) Apps: This term is short for applications, which come in a number of forms depending on the phone you have, the television you own, or the computer you use. This term first became familiar to us with the birth of the Apple Iphone in Apps are programs on what they call smart devices that help you to do more digitally. Apps can help you by editing pictures that you take on your phone, by allowing you to post pictures or commentary to followers, or by allowing you to listen to music from around the world effortlessly. The innovation of Apps is limitless and as new programmers develop Apps each day to make our lives easier- you will never be able to download or know all of them. Today with over 300,000 Iphone Apps alone- we will have to discuss some of the most popular ones in a later article. 2) Hashtags #: Hashtags or what you may think of as a pound sign or a tic-tac-toe board are not only something you will see when you view social media Apps now, but they have become mainstream on the news, television programs, and even sporting events. It was at a Dodgers game as I watched fans pictures scroll on the Jumbotron that I thought- this is something that half the stadium may not be able to do. The screen read, Post your picture to Twitter with the #thinkblue and we may display your image. As stated above, Twitter is an App that you must download to your phone where you can post your pictures. The purpose of adding a # and a phrase to the picture is for marketing reasons. Remember those terms from my last article (bae, relationship goals, etc.)- search any of those terms in an App like Twitter and anyone s post with # and that phrase will pop up. Surveying and marketing are an expensive business and with this easy tool, companies have been able to poll us for free. So, look for this in the corner of your screen next time you are watching a TV show with the kids or grandkids and ask them to search one of their Apps for how many times that phrase has been hashtagged. 3) Streaming: This is something that can be done through a website on the Internet or through an App on your mobile smart device. People stream meetings, conversations, television shows, music, videos, photos, etc. Streaming simply means that instead of going to the local Blockbuster or Sam Goody, you can now get almost any kind of media you want in minutes in the comfort of your own home. Families who are separated by distance can keep in touch by streaming videos of their kids to relatives, a hankering for Casablanca at 1 am on a sleepless night can become a reality, and a 1927 version of Someone to Watch Over Me can be gracing your speakers in minutes. Again, I am not saying that if you prefer to keep your life private or use your rotary phone or play your favorite record that you should be judged. Older generations can learn from children today, but the younger generations should be open to learning from you as well. One of my favorite things about being an English teacher was getting to discuss classics like Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird with my students. I would use those opportunities to educate students about life and pop culture of the time periods we read. I would often ask them to continue those conversations at home, but wondered how many would. Tonight, instead of arguing with your children about who is the greater generation- learn from each other; you may just be surprised about their openness to learn and what you may have never known you could learn. Cook With the Summer Olympics in Brazil approaching fast Southern California s beach volleyball, in which Newport Beach is a mecca and breeding hot spot to new prospective pro s to be will play a dominant role. Just ask Charlie Brande, Newport Beach s highly regarded coach when it comes to volleyball consulting. Athletes keep getting stronger, taller, and faster and the sport of beach volleyball keeps progressing and now competes in many top level platforms including the NCAA Tournament, FIVB & AVP Pro Beach Tours, & several international tournaments including the Olympics. There is money to be made again in beach volleyball, despite the hardships the sport has endured. The FIVB remains strong while the AVP slowly fights back from its downfall and reformation years back. However, the AVP now produces once again several annual professional tournaments with huge attendance numbers and successful media and sponsor results. The FIVB runs basically from March to August with tournaments in different countries pretty much every other week. The 2016 FIVB tour hits Kish Island Iran, Maceio Brazil, Rio Brazil, Victoria Brazil, Doha Qatar, Xiamen China, Fuzhou China, Fortaleza Brazil, Sochi Russia, Antalya Turkey, Cincinnati USA, Moscow Russia, Hamburg Germany, Olszytn Poland, Porec Croatia, Gstaad Switzerland, Sochi WCCOQ Russia, Cabo Frio Brazil, Larnaka Cyprus, Klagenfurt Austria, and Long Beach USA. The tour sounds more like a cruise around the world aboard The World, Residence at Sea. The FIVB World Championships has overall prize money of over 1 million with the winners of both female and male divisions taking home over $75,000 each. The AVP had eight major tournaments in 2015 starting with The New Orleans Open in May, St. Petersburg Florida Grand Slam in June, New York City Open in July, Seattle Open in early-august, Manhattan Beach Open in mid-august, Chicago Open in late-august 2015, Cincinnati Open in Mason Ohio at The Linder Family Tennis Center September 2015, and finishing with The AVP Championships in Huntington Beach, California in September. The current AVP prize money is significantly lower than the FIVB, however at one point was in the millions annually. Collegiate beach volleyball was approved to become a championship NCAA DI (Division One) sport in 2014 and DII (Division Two) and DIII (Division Three) in There are 49 division I schools, 7 division II schools, and 1 division III schools competing in NCAA sand volleyball and more and more schools joining every year. Currently, there are only women s sand volleyball teams competing in the NCAA s. Beach Volleyball also now has a full-fledged NCAA championship hosted in Gulf Shores, Alabama in '16 and '17. The NCAA championship will have an eight-team bracket double-elimination format. Men s beach volleyball is also trying to pave its way into NCAA competition; however, due to Title VIIII restrictions and regulations we will only be watching women s beach volleyball for now. Santa Monica, California, 1920, is the official birthplace of beach volleyball and by 1930 the first two-man teams of beach volleyball were being played and the sport began to gain international interest. The sport did not compete in the Olympics until 1996 in the Atlanta Games with Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes winning Gold in the men s. Notable American players such as Karch, Sinjin Smith, Randy Stolklos, Phil Dalhausser, Misty May- Treanor, Holly McPeak, Gabrielle Reece, Kerri Walsh Jennings, April Ross, and Jennifer Kessy are international celebrities who are the reason the sport is an Olympic event today. Most of the athletes names, and many other notable pros can be seen practicing pretty much every day on the beaches that stretch the Southern California Coast with none more prevalent locale than Newport Beach. The most fun tournament to attend and watch is the Manhattan 6 man. This tournament is held every summer, and it is a blast. For anyone who has been before, just ask. It s a huge party and every team from professional to amateur is all out in full costume competing.
