1 July 2nd Speaker US Senator Chris Coons July 15th Last day for Sign Up Blood Bank of Delmarva July 18th Candlelight Theater social the Always Patsy Cline. July 30st Ronald McDonald House service August 6th District Phillies Game to STRIKE OUT HUNGER Club Past President Tom Hornung gave us an inside view of his other career at the Candlelight Theater and provided a teaser to tempt us to attend his production of Always, Patsy Cline. The theatre is located in a barn built ca on the Hanby Farm. From 1931 until 1966, it was known as the Robin Hood theatre. Many famous actors began their careers there in summer stock productions -- Barbara BelGeddes, Barbara Rush, and Tony Perkins, to name a few. In 1953 Arthur Miller directed his play, All My Sons, at the theatre. In 1969 the building became the Candlelight Music Theatre, managed by Julian Borris, John O Toole, and their wives. (Tom s first performance there was in 1970.) Soon it became the Candlelight Music Dinner Theatre, the first dinner theatre in the state. Some local actors now well known performed here -- Susan Stroman, Dianne Fratantoni, and John Dossett. Bob and Jodi Miller began operating the theater in 2003 and tried to make it an Equity site; however, its small (150 seats) size made that impossible. Thus New Candlelight Productions, a 501C3 non-profit, took over the reins in The Millers continued to operate the restaurant. In 2010, the non-profit acquired that business as well and changed the name to The Candlelight Theatre. Like many aging structures, the building needs repairs, and the stage must be replaced. To do so required an engineering study that revealed that, in order to do a project of that magnitude, the building must be brought up to today s code, with a price tag estimated at $300,000. A campaign to raise this amount is underway. M Always, Patsy Cline is in rehearsal and opens soon. Ted Swindley, an Artistic Director for a repertory theater in Houston Texas, created the show as a musical tribute to Patsy. The true story is told by a fan turned friend, Louise Seger, and features 27 Patsy Cline hits. Sue Hornung plays Louise. Patsy Cline is being played by Erica Scanlon-Harr a former Miss New Jersey. She has degrees from Wesleyan College and the New School. She has performed in a number of productions at Candlelight, at the Walnut Street Theater and worked for Disney Cruise Lines. Her accompanist today is the musical director Tony Romano. He is currently at Delaware Children s Theatre, where he has been the musical director for over fifteen years. She sang Walking in the Moonlight and Crazy to tempt us to come to Rotary Club night on July 18. She succeeded.
2 Arch Laymen is considering a come back into Wilmington West. He still has his badge so it must be the real thing. Rudy Foschi making conversation with main character in the Patsy Kline roll, Erica Scanlon-Harr at the Candlelight Theatre. Jay Ambrose sits the table with our outbound secretary Denise Tracy selling the 50/50s.

The Rotary Foundation: In the Rotary Year TRF established a credit card program as a painless way to give to our foundation. The message that I am sharing with you now appeared on my monthly statement: " We wish to thank you for your continued support of this program that has raised more than US$ 8.6 million for The Rotary Foundation of which US$3.6 million has gone to help eradicate polio. Each time you use your Rotary credit card you help make the world a better place. Learn more about the Rotary card at " Short-Term Exchange Program (STEP): District 3500 Taiwan is looking for 30 girls and boys ages to participate in STEP from July 31, 2014 through August 21, If you know someone who is interested, please contact PDG Susan Giove at Stop Hunger District Conference: Many thanks to the nearly 70 volunteers at the District Conference who helped with the Stop Hunger Now food packaging program. The room was packed with enthusiastic workers who poured heavy bags, carefully measured cups of rice and soy, delivered precious open bags to weighing stations, heat-sealed the bags, and packed them into cartons. And then the really heavy work began with loading the cartons of food and equipment back into the truck for delivery to Philadelphia. In about 90 minutes we packaged 10,150 meals! Notice was just sent out that our packages were combined with other recent events and just this week shipped to a school in Panama. Thank you, again, for participating and making a difference in the lives of hungry children around the world. Robin Broomall
