3 Senior Issue May 27, 2010 page 3 Blood Mobile returns to BHS for spring season By Misha Cooley Bryan High School held its second blood drive of the year in the gym, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for students 17 and older on May 3, A new rule allows students of the age of 16 to participate with parental permission. Of the 73 scheduled appointments, only 12 were unable to give blood. Luckily, no major incidents were reported, although there were 6 minor reactions. I gave double red and it was intense, said donor, Bronwen Phillips. My arm got all tingly and I felt like I was going to pass out. The experience was pretty sweet. Double red is a special draw where O+ donors give two units of blood. The red blood cells are extracted and the remaining plasma is put back into the donor s body. Student council, who was in charge of working at the American Red Cross blood mobile from Fort Wayne, donated pizza, cookies, juice, and other snacks. All in all, the blood drive was successful with 68 total units donated, 54 being whole blood units, and 7 double reds. The blood drive went really smoothly this year, said Mrs. Elser, student council advisor. In years past, we ve had some really wild kids, but all the kids were really well- behaved this year. From left and going counterclockwise: Deidra Coil, Hailey Worthington, Cory Wiles, and Mandee Hart all overcame their fears and braved the needle and the pain in order to save up to three lives. Clunker of the Month: Sheila the VW Rabbit By Misha Cooley Senior Michael Lirot s silver 1982 Volkswagen Rabbit, Sheila, has the honor of being Bryan High s very last clunker of the month for May. Mike received the truck from his mom, who drove it when she was in high school, and over the past 18 years, the rabbit has run up 197,000 miles. Problems with Mike s truck include lack of heating and air conditioning, trouble reaching a speed of 65 miles per hour, and it s so tiny that you can easily touch both windows while sitting inside. The passenger door doesn t always latch, which leads to some interesting solutions. We were coming home from church one day, and the passenger door didn t latch, so Shelbie (his girlfriend) had to hold the door shut the whole way home, he laughed. Fortunately for Mike and his wallet, the Rabbit gets about 36 miles per gallon. The only good thing about the Rabbit is the gas mileage, said Mike. Sheila has been a trooper and has helped two generations get from point A to point Shelia sits in Mike s driveway where she spends most of her time. Even though she gets great gas-mileage, she is an embarrassment to drive. B despite her clunker status. Homecoming week, the homecoming assembly, and all the ridiculous dress up days--not to mention annihilating everyone Farewell to Hi-Life By Claudia Miller It has been an exciting 23 years as the Hi-Life adviser. From the olden days of waxing pages to the online blog of the Hi-Life, I have had some awesome experiences with students creating publications and reporting news. There have been some funny stories, including one about the Schwan s food truck and one about identifying the trails of animals in science class. And, doughnuts and cookies are great incentives to get work finished on a deadline. I have been able to take students to Ball State and IU for journalism camps and to Kansas City and Washington D.C. for national journalism conferences. The Hi-Life has won national recognition, and student reporters and journalists have won awards at both the University of Toledo Media event and BGSU s Great Lakes Student Journalism event. Students have gone on to be college newspaper editors and a few have gone on to careers in journalism. The history of the Hi-Life chronicled many memories. From Kiwanis Students of the Month to Homecoming week to sports and music and drama to prom, Hi-life has covered thousands of events and recorded as many special moments. But, the times have changed. So, with this issue, after 85 years of providing news and entertainment, BHS bids a fond farewell to Hi-Life. I can t speak for anyone else, but I sure am going to miss it.

7 Senior Issue May 27, 2010 page 7 Seniors earn respect of NWOAL in Senior athletes remember The class of 2010 will leave behind a legacy of winning for future Golden Bears to aspire to. In the fall, the golf team won the NWOAL, breezed through sectionals and districts, finishing sixth at state. The football team finished second in the NWOAL and qualified for the state tournament by finishing eighth in the region. Volleyball finished the season with solid wins against league foes Liberty Center and Swanton. The girls soccer team compiled an outstanding season under the lead of veteran coach Kim Pepple. The boys soccer team finished with an impressive record. Girls tennis team finished with a good 12-5 record, with Meredith McDonagh finishing 4th at districts. The boy s cross country team placed 5th at the Archbold Invite, and the girl s placed an impressive 2nd at the O-G Invite. We experienced a season with many ups and downs. However, when the season was over, we all had improved and grown together, Coach Plouck stated. The basketball team had a respectable 10-8 regular season. The wrestling team broke a school record for qualifying 8 people to districts; they had a huge win over state ranked Defiance and beat Delta for the first time in 4 years. The swim team had a very good season. Although swim is not an NWOAL sport, the teams had strong finishes against Ayersville and Toledo Central Catholic, qualifying Rachel Francis. Lesley Harsila, Aarika Alabata, and Jen Frame for state. Track finished the league in the top half, qualifying several team members for districts The best part of this year was cheering at the State playoffs. -Natasha Merschdorf I ll miss the goofy softball practices and calling Sarah Eickhoff Chuck. -- Aimee Dickinson I ll miss how strong our team s bond got each year. -- Miranda Kitchen I will miss the Friday night lights and the roar of the crowd. -Colton Poncsak I ll miss the basketball team bond and watching Emillee Snavely run from the middle school to the high school. -- Bronwen Phillips Tennis team has solid season The boys tennis team finished their season with a respectable 8-6 record, with strong wins over Archbold, Maumee and Ayersville. At press time, several athletes are still in tournament competition. Baseball team completes successful season from league win to sectional title Softball team finishes strong, tied for second in NWOAL The softball team finished the season strong with a win over Toledo Rogers at sectionals and a second place tie in the league with Liberty Center and Evergreen. The 2010 season for baseball has been quite successful. According to Coach Roebuck the team has risen to the challenge to be the best. The team started out slow this season, and we told them, you have to step it up and start playing consistently, and ever since then, I ve been very impressed with the seniors and their leadership and how the younger guys have been stepping up, Coach Roebuck stated.

8 BHS CLASS of 2010 Senior Issue May 27, 2010 page 8 A farewell to class of 2010 To the Class of 2010: We will soon be marking the conclusion of a four year journey. This journey for each of you has included an array of different and personal experiences. For some, the journey passed in record time, for others, it seemed like it would never end. The students of both Four County Career Center and Career- You have learned valuable Based Intervention. {Both senior class photo and FCCC/CBI lessons in the classroom, on the stage, in the hallway, photo taken by Mrs. Goebel} or on the athletic field. This journey has provided you with lasting relationships and memories. This microcosm we call high school has been filled with conflict and camaraderie, drama and excitement, fun and sadness, adventure or confinement. Regardless of the journey, I hope the future becomes what you dream it will be. I hope that life meets, or exceeds, your expectations. If you are willing to think out of the box, if you are willing to meet new people and visit new places, then anything becomes possible. There are no limits to what you can dream. High school was a learning experience and so is life. Best wishes and a god speed to you all. Stephen Alspaugh, Principal Bryan High School.
