Citrus St West Covina, CA It started mid morning with the energy and fun of the Seniors we picked up from Bridgcreek. It was like having a bus full of grandparents who were as feisty as they were excited about the day. Once we arrived at The Grove, we were treated to a fabulous lunch courtesy of Jouni s Catering. We were able to fill all the seats and enjoyed the fellowship before heading off to the theatre for Fiddler On The Roof. It was an amazing day, and all those in attendance agreed let s do this again! It was a funfilled way to raise money for our Shoes and Socks program. For those Rotarians not in attendance you were missed. We want your comments. 2 Recent Guest Appearances Officer Keri Rivas from California Highway Patrol talks to the club about driver safety and CHP programs designed to educate drivers. Did you know that 363,000 people drive the I-10 freeway daily? All the more reason to drive safely! Pastor Kelly from Faith Community Church in West Covina joined us for Breakfast and brought a message that was not expected. As he mentioned, when you think about church, you may think of a cathedral like building, a chapel or even hard wooden pews. The church is full of many programs designed to heal hurts, meet needs, and help dreams become a reality. 3 Club Highlights September 22, 2012 the Edgewood High School Interact Club received a visit from Rotary International District Governor, Dr. Sylvia Whitlock, Assistant Governor, Roger Gutierrez; and, from our club President Don Fernald and President Elect Lu Arredondo. Over 50 students were in attendance as Governor Whitlock spoke to the kids about rotary, achieving and pushing through barriers to achieve success in life through service, goodwill, hard work, and perseverance. On September 9, 2012 while we were all enjoying our weekend, President Don was in San Diego participating in the 9/11 Heroes 5K run. 4 Let s play games By: Luanne Arredondo As Rotarians, we are not only busy at work, but we are also busy in our humanitarian efforts. While these are both a positive way to spend out time, we need to remember to create a balance in our life. While we are busy changing the world and paying the bills, let s not forget the importance of playing games. Children are taught to play games at an early age. Games teach patience, social interaction, negotiation, strategy, how to win and lose gracefully, mental stimulation, mental and physical confidence that keeps us healthy. Games attract us because they are fun! No matter how old we get, playing games is important. It is mentally stimulating, keeps us engaged and keeps us psychologically fit.
