2 The annual Knights banquet was held on December 7, 2013 at the Doubletree Rosemead hotel. There was great food/ company and loads of fun was had by all. The President s Award was presented to Mike Costner for serving lunches at the events and donating net proceeds to the club. Several members of the Circle Burners attended and again sat at the winning table. There were plenty of nice prizes in the raffle, conducted by Tom Collier and his helper Josephine. Andy Borgogna has gone completely electric in his flying and to his amazement won a starter for combustion engines. He promptly donated it back to the raffle Andy was on a hot streak and he won the starter again Not wanting to score a hat trick Andy gave it to Dave Rogers. Forty folks attended the Gala Event and lots of raffle tickets were sold. The women attending were also given a lovely gift of appreciation from the Knights. 3 Message from your President: Happy New Year and welcome to 2014 where the Knights have many great things in store for us in this upcoming new year. I hope that your holiday season was filled with lots good food, family and friends and of course model airplane gifts or a gift membership from a loved one for your Knights dues renewal. The holiday party was held at the Rosemead Doubletree hotel was a great success. Next year we might just need to add another table or larger room with the overwhelming attendance of Knight s along with The Valley Circle Burners and many other friends and family of the Knights. Several of the NASS Speed flyers joined us as their two day TOYS FOR TOTS Speed and Racing event coincided with the Knights holiday dinner. Pictures have been posted on our Facebook page. (CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW) The Knight s new officers were installed at the KOTRC Holiday Party. They are: Mike Alurac, President; Bob Werle and Paul Wescott as Co-Vice Presidents; Larry Renger, Secretary; Mike Jones, Treasurer; and Dave Kick, Co-Treasurer. Mike Costner was presented the President s Choice award for his continuous volunteer efforts over the last couple years. The Direct Connection newsletter has new editors - Mike and Pam Jones. This is your newsletter, so send them articles and pictures for each discipline of CL flying - editorials, reprints of building and how-to articles, local CL events and club activities. This group can really cook and we will feature a recipe of the month. your contributions to Mike at vintagerider50@yahoo.com. The Knights will again host a booth at this year s AMA Expo in Ontario, CA. Our booth is always popular with the attendees. Look for us and take one of our new full color, glossy brochure cards with you We will again be in the Flight Zone area conducting training sessions with the club s Larry Renger designed ET-1 Electric Trainer. This activity was so popular last year that we were asked to conduct training sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Expo attendees can fly a few laps and receive a flight training certificate sponsored by the Knights (and Ovaltine for you Little Orphan Annie fans) We are looking for volunteers to man the booth and assist in the flight training so let me know if you can make it out the AMA Expo to represent the Knights and assist us in our worthy cause of advocating control line model aviation. 4 Recipes of the month club Cassatta alla Siciliana Brought to you by Larry Renger SICILIAN CAKE with chocolate/coffee icing from Time/Life Italian cookbook" Cake: A fresh Pound Cake baked in a 9x13 pan. Cut the cake in half the short way and slice into 6 layers." Layer filling: 1 lb" Riccota cheese" 2 Tbsp"Heavy cream" ¼ cup "Sugar" 3 Tbsp"Orange liqueur" 3 Tbsp Coarsly chopped mixed candied fruit" 2 oz Semisweet chocolate bits" Rub the Riccota into a bowl through a food mill or use a coarse sieve and a wooden spoon. Beat with an electric beater until smooth. Beating constantly, add the cream, sugar and liqueur. With a rubber spatula fold in the candied fruit and chocolate. Build up the cake using up all the mix between the layers. End with a plain slice on top. Gently press the loaf to make it compact. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours." Chocolate Frosting: 12 oz " Semisweet chocolate bits" ¾ cup" Strong black coffee" ½ lb Unsalted butter, cut into ½ pieces and thoroughly chilled " Melt the chocolate with coffee in a double burner, stirring constantly until the chocolate has completely dissolved. Remove from heat and beat in the butter, 1 piece at a time. Beat until the mixture is smooth and chill until thickened to spreading consistency. With a metal spatula, spread the frosting evenly on the top and all sides of the cassata. Do a decorative swirl on the top. Cover loosely with plastic or foil and refrigerate for at least a day before serving. 4

5 Another Great Recipe - Squash Soup: brought to you by Warren Walker Peel and chop one large butternut or buttercup squash into 3/4" pieces, put into 4 quart pot" Add 1 quart of chicken stock and 1 quart of vegetable stock Add 1/4 teaspoon of : thyme, oregano, sage, pepper" Add 1/2 teaspoon of seasoning salt (I used slap your mamma) Add 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder" Bring to a boil and cook until squash almost falls apart" Remove from heat and bend with emersion blender until completely smooth. Stir in 3/4 cup of heavy cream and 3 tablespoons of butter if soup is to thin, bring to a boil and add cornstarch and water (mix together 1 tbl cornstarch and 2-3 ozs of water) Salt and pepper to taste. 6 The Safe Way Palm Springs Model Rail Road" For my last article of 2013, I thought we d take a break from airplanes and show you a small portion of the set-up on display at the Living Desert Museum & Zoo in Palm Springs. Diane & I were invited to stay at a friend s home in the area and decided to pay a return visit to the facility. If you have not been there, you should. The train display is incredible. As you can see from the small sample below that even includes a 50 s Buick Roadmaster convertible, as well as other vintage cars near the large gauge trains. The display includes historic creations such as Mount Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, a gold mining area and a biplane center. 8 K e of the Round Ci s t h rcl nig AMA District 10 Charter The Knights of the Round Circle is an all around control line modeling club that supports all forms of control line model aviation. Our member s interests cover all of the control line modeling disciplines from combat, to speed, to racing, to carrier, to scale, and last but not least stunt. The Knights of the Round Circle was founded in early 1987 and has a broad membership that includes members in California, Arizona, and Nevada and support S.T.E.M Core Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Careers through the valuable skills learned in control line model aviation. The Knights can be found showing their Control-Line training activity at the AMA Expo Ontario, CA, Fullerton Airport Open House, Compton Airport EAA Chapter 96 Fly-In event and RCX Expo and are available for school assemblies, corporate events and private parties. The Knights members are proudly associated with control-line advocacy groups PAMPA Stunt, MACA Combat, SCAR Racing, NCS Carrier and NASS Speed. The club holds monthly meetings and sponsors two major flying events yearly, The Bob Palmer Memorial and The Sir Dale Kirn s Memorial Knight s Joust, honoring those individuals that have made outstanding contributions to control line modeling. Our membership ranges from young to old with skill levels from just beginning, to sport flyers, to National Champions. 9 Club Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at the Fullerton Airport AFI building located at 4119 W. Commonwealth Avenue, Fullerton, CA. Meetings start at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome. You don t have to be a member to attend. You just need an interest in control line modeling. The easiest way to join the club is to attend a club meeting and sign up if you like it. Dues are $30 per year. Youth memberships under 18 are FREE. KOTRC members enjoy two flying sites in Los Angeles County. Whittier Narrows - The Whittier Narrows recreation area is one of the two flying sites located in Los Angeles County and is the location for the KOTRC sponsored contests during the year. Whittier Narrows is part of the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation department and is located in South El Monte, California. Sepulveda Basin - The Sepulveda Basin is located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County near where the 405 freeway and the 101 freeway meet. The flying area is just west of the 405 freeway and is entered from Woodley Ave. between Victory and Burbank Boulevards.
