The musical will be presented on November 10 and 12, or November 11 and 12, at 7:00 p.m. depending on football playoffs. 2 District Happenings Note Change in School Calendar Please note the change in the school calendar. School will be held on Friday, November 11. There will, however, be no school on Wednesday, November 23 for a teacher in-service day. Inclement Weather With winter weather just around the corner we need to be aware of where to find out about school delays and closings. The following radio and television stations will have the information: KGRN 1410 AM (Grinnell), KCRG Channel 9 (Cedar Rapids), Channel 13 (Des Moines), KCCI Channel 8 (Des Moines). Parents, students, and other district patrons are asked to listen to any of the designated stations for announcements. If you would like to receive a text message or an e- mail from KCCI, you can sign up at We ask that you not call the school as staff is often very limited, or unavailable during adverse weather, making it impossible for those staff members on duty to proceed with school closure activities while answering telephones. Daylight Savings Time Remember to turn your clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 6. Picture Retakes Picture retakes for all students will be on Thursday, November 17 starting at 8:30 a.m. Veterans Day Program The BGM Elementary Character Council will be honoring veterans during the month of November. The council has scheduled a Veteran s Day program at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11. We are inviting any relatives of students, who are veterans, to join us that afternoon. We are also extending the invitation to all local veterans in our area. The high school band and choir, junior high band and choir, and all elementary students will be performing that day. BGM Music Department Fruit, Meat & Cheese Sale It s that time of year when the music students participate in their biggest fundraiser. This year sales run until November 7. Fruit will be from Seaton s Flag Foods and the meat and cheese items from Dayton Meat Products. Delivery of purchased items will be December 1. Lunch Accounts Remember to keep your lunch account in a positive balance. Parents of pre-school through third grade students should remember that monthly snack milk is taken out of your account on the first of each month ($5.00 for preschool through third grade). Junior High Student Council Clothing Sale The junior high student council is holding a BGM clothing sale. They are offering hooded sweatshirts, crew-neck sweatshirts, and t-shirts (short & long sleeved) in three colors. Orders will be taken until November 18 and delivered by Christmas. Order forms are available at both school offices.

3 Junior / Senior High Happenings Senior pictures needed If you have your senior pictures, please get them to Billie in the high school. If you have not had them taken, please get them to her no later than Nov. 22nd. With such a large graduating class, Mrs. Jack needs to get Senior Interviews in the newspaper and the Yearbook needs them as well. Our yearbook deadline for your pages is Dec. 5. If you are not having senior pictures taken, please let Billie know so they can take a photo to include you in these things. Photos can be ed to bsheets@brooklyn.k12.ia.us as well. SICL Honor Choir The SICL Honor Choir will take place on Tuesday, November 15 at BGM. Students will attend an afternoon practice session starting at 12:00. An evening concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. Junior High Fundraiser The JH Student council will be selling jewelry this year. Spirit Necklaces are $18.00 each. Spirit key chains are $13.00 each and Jewelry Add-ons are also available from $2.00 $6.50 each. Elementary Happenings Low lunch balance notices To save paper, low lunch balance notices will only be sent home on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please remember to send money for lunch accounts periodically to avoid a debit balance. Elementary Parents please remember Elementary students should not arrive at school before 8:00 a.m. unless they are riding a bus. We have had several students at school before 8:00 a.m., and there is no supervision. For their safety, please do not have your child arrive before 8:00 a.m. We appreciate your cooperation concerning this matter for the safety of all concerned. Jump Rope for Heart The tradition continues as plans are being made for the 29 year of Jump Rope for Heart on November 3. The American Heart Association, the American Association of Health, and Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance sponsor Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart is another way BGM School is trying to improve the lives of their students and community.

4 October Kiwanis Student of the Month Morgan Hawkins is the October Kiwanis student of the month. She is the daughter of Angie and Rick Radcliffe and Mark and Sally Hawkins, and she lives in Brooklyn. Morgan s siblings are Erin, Steve, Monica, Cody, Molly and Riley. She attends the Grace United Methodist Church where she is the president of ALPO and sings in the praise team choir. Morgan is a four-year honor roll student who has been elected into the National Honor Society. She has participated in band, show choir, choir and the SICL Honor Choir. Morgan also was involved in two musicals. She has had the honor of being the class president all four years and has added the student council leadership role this year. Morgan has also participated in several extracurricular activities throughout high school. She has been a cheerleader all four years, was selected to the Iowa Cheer Honor Squad, and was given the All- American Cheer Award. She has played softball four years, volleyball one year, and track one year where she was a state qualifier. Outside of school Morgan had been involved with dance for 10 years and has been a dance demonstrator for two years. She has been employed by Deano s Pizza, Brooklyn Service Center, and as a lifeguard. In her spare time, Morgan likes to spend time with Jessica and John, spend time with friends, go to bonfires, and do anything during the summer. Morgan plans to go to Iowa Central for a nursing degree and possibly cheerleading. She then wants to continue her education at The University of Iowa to receive a BSN and then a MSN. Morgan would like to thank her family, especially her mom, for always being there for her. She would also like to thank her teachers for never giving up on us. September and October Sixth Grade Kiwanis Students of the Month selected Lyla Kriegel and Kendall Bunn were named Sixth Grade Kiwanis Students of the Month for September and October. Lyla is the daughter of Chris and Kim Kriegel, and Kendall is the son of Mike and Vickie Bunn. Students are selected for this honor by the elementary staff.
