1 THE / DIE APIE NEWS / NUUS ALL ABOUT THE BIG FARM WE LIVE ON OCTOBER / OKTOBER 2016 VOLUME 1(2) W.A.H.S SAYS FAREWELL TO LEGENDS MRSS BEUGGER AND LOMBARD Once again the time has come to say goodbye to two staff members leaving us at the end of Our beloved Mrs Beugger is leaving us at the end of the year, having served WAHS since January Mrs Beugger taught English at Kingsway High School for many years where she became a legend in her field of study, English Home Language. The Winterberg children will truly miss her for in her quiet, patient manner the children felt her compassion and caring dedication. Mrs Beugger was of the old school concerning her devotion as a teacher and the younger one s could learn a lot from her as a role model. Mrs Beugger will truly be missed at Winterberg for she was someone special a teacher of exceptional ability, modest and humane. Read what her Gr 12 s had to say on page 24! Enjoy your retirement, Mrs Beugger. Winterberg salutes you. Ons moet egter totsiens sê aan nog n Apie-legende Mev Lombard. In n era wat nie veel waarde heg aan ou beginsels nie, spyt dit ons om totsiens te sê aan iemand wat n absolute toonbeeld van lojaliteit is. Sy het haar beroepsreis in Maart 1993 by Winterberg begin en amper 24 jaar aaneenlopende diens gelewer. Mev Lombard se passie vir Winterberg loop deur haar are en is n inspirasie vir almal. Twee van haar kinders, Phillip en Melindi het onderskeidelik in 2003 en 2009 aan HLSW gematrikuleer. Sy het so liefde vir Winterberg by hulle gekweek dat Melindi (nou Richter) tans ons lewenswetenskappe onderwyseres is. Wynig gaan daar ook n middag verby waar Mev Lombard en haar kleinseun, Morgan, nie op die plaas te siene is nie. Die Dickie Ducks (ganse) en enkukhus (lêhenne) moet besoek word! As werknemer was sy n staatmaker. Haar breë kennis wat deur die jare se ervaring opgedoen is, sal moeilik vervang word. Die voëltjies fluit dat sy verlang na die kleinkinders in Australië en dat sy in die nabye toekoms permanent by hulle wil aansluit. Geniet u rus, Mev Lombard. Ons gaan u mis! 1

2 n WAARDEGEDREWE WINTERBERG - Mnr Fred Every FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY In n tyd van morele verval het baie jongmense toenemend meer morele leiding nodig. Ouerhuise bied dit nie altyd nie, ook nie die gemeenskap nie: leerders kyk na die skool as morele kompas. Waardegedrewe onderwys is die laaste jaar n gonswoord en kan omskryf word as n skool wat leerders met waardes toerus waarop hulle hul eie lewe kan bou en waar die skool beleide bepaal aan die hand van n waardestelsel. Vir beide die skool en sy leerders hou waardegedrewe onderwys voordele in. Individue wat waardes nastreef, bou aan dissipline en lei n instelling na groot hoogtes. Leerders word ook gelei om hul eie lewe te bou rondom waardes. Waardegedrewe onderwys sal altyd n strewe wees, want elke jaar verwelkom ons nuwe leerders. Wanneer dit soms na n onbegonne taak begin lyk, begin ons waar jy moet begin as jy n verskil wil maak by jouself. As onderwysers waardes hoog op prys stel en dit as beginsels sien om volgens te leef, sien leerders dit en streef daarna. As n skool het Winterberg baie areas waar ons waardegedrewe onderwys kan bevorder. Elke gebied is n geleentheid om ons jongmense toe te rus met n waardestelsel dat ons hulle met lewensvaardighede die wêreld kan instuur om leiers van môre te wees. THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMERA LENSE Amy Booth 1. Where did you grow up and what high school did you attend? I grew up in the beautiful Gem of the Karoo, Graaff-Reinett. I started and ended my school career at Volkskool. 2. What is your fondest memory of this school? I am a sucker for sentiments as there are many Our tour to Argentina in 2006, all the years in the Knysna forest with the Gr 12 s, precious friendships. Also the first drama evening and what followed. I will never forget the following: In January 1991, shortly after I started here, Mr Harris came up to me one day saying My friend, you ll see this place is a cultural desert. If I look back now I m proud of what the learners have achieved over the past 20 years. 3. When did you start teaching at WAHS and why teaching as a profession? I started in January Both my parents were teachers, so how do the say You can t escape your genes! I love people because no two people are the same. I also love drama, so teaching wasn t a bad choice! (Hahaha!) 4. How did the learners change from when you started at WAHS to now? Most of them grew up on farms those days so they were obviously much more interested in farming and the outdoors! Of course none of today s technology was available then. 5. Is teaching in 2016 a challenge? Yes and no. The red-tape from the Department is a challenge but the learners are not a challenge. Everybody just wants to be treated fairly and with respect. I must say I am privileged, the learners that I teach are well-behaved. 6. Is there a specific year group that you will remember? Why them? My classes of 2006 and We went on a rugby tour to Argentina which was very special. I must say I will also miss my class of 2016! 7. If you can wake up to tomorrow and not be a teacher, what would you be? There are many things! I would like to be an international tour guide or an actor or a doctor, or, or, or 8. Tell us a funny WAHS story! There are many, but one that was very special (and that can be told) is the following: One year, during a 40 days celebration by the matrics they thought it suitable to bring the farm to school, seeing that it is an agricultural school. There were sheep, chickens and goats in the passages together with a terrible noise. One of the teachers came out of her classroom to find out what was going on and was overwhelmed by the farm in front of her classroom! Needless to say, it was hell to play and culprits were cleaning animal droppings for the rest of the day. Another classic story for another day is when our 1 st team prop ran away from a prostitute in Buenos Aires!! n Opgewonde Gr 10 toerisme klas het op 16 Mei saam met Me Nieman na Addo vertrek. Met hul aankoms, is hulle ontmoet deur die hopon-guide, Simni. Sanparke se gidse bly in kontak met mekaar danksy nuwe tegnologie en kan maklik inligting uitruil oor waar parkentoesiaste spesifieke diere te siene kan kry. Die Gr 10 s was gelukkig om baie olifante, koedoes en vlakvarke te sien. Twee leeus wat langs die pad gelê en slaap het was n hoogtepunt! Die Addo-uitstappie bly n hoogtepunt op die toerisme klas se kalender, want die leerders het die geleentheid om die Groot 5 in hul natuurlike habitat te sien. 3 GR 11 TOURISM: P.E FIELD- TRIP AN EXPERIENCE TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2017 FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY MS NIEMAN TREAT THE GR 12 TOURISM CLASS TO FAIRIES, WATERFALLS IN WONDERLAND On their turn, the Gr 11 class visited Port Elizabeth on 17 May. Ludwe, a professional tourism guide, was met at the Lighthouse in the Donkin Reserve. The tour guide shared interesting information about the history of Nelson Mandela Bay and the learners viewed artwork by local artist at the museum. They also visited the airport, Bay West Mall and reported for seal and penguin feeding duty at Bayworld Oceanarium. Visiting the snake park and the Boardwalk was still on the agenda before departure. Ms Nieman and the Gr 12 tourism class visited Hogsback on 18 May for a spectacular autumn display. St Patrick on the Hill was the first stop followed by a visit to the Edge. The Gr12 s had the opportunity to walk one of the largest labyrinths in the world and the brave ones were treated to a panorama view of the valley on the edge of the cliff. The Arboretum and 39 steps waterfall was also on the agenda before lunch and a visit to Madonna and Child after lunch. A trip to remember for the Gr 12s! 4 WINTERBERG-OPE DAG LOK GROOT REAKSIE OP SOSIALE MEDIA UIT FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY Op 12 Mei was dit weer D- dag op WAHS se werwingskalender. Om leerder getalle hoog te hou, bly n uitdaging in die moeilike ekonomiese tye. Die skoolgebou is behoorlik afgestof, blykgevryf en reggepak om die voorgenome Apies op die Plaas te verwelkom. Skoolhoof, Mnr Fred Every, het die voorgenome ouers in die saal toegespreek waarna die ouers en leerders n ligte middagete by die Winter- berger geniet het. Om 14h30 het die pret behoorlik begin en die Gr 7 s se oë het gerek toe hulle die praktiese afdelings besoek het. Elke groep het op rotasie basis deur die ses afdelings beweeg en gesien wat op ons plaas gebeur. Die foto s wat op facebook gelaai is, het ook baie positiewe reaksie by oudskoliere ontlok. 5 GR 11 LBP-LEERDERS BESOEK EPOL-FABRIEK FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY Mnr Gavin Norman van Epol het gereël dat HLSW se Gr 11 LBP-leerders die Epol-fabriek net buite Oos-Londen op 21 Oktober besoek. Die leerders het n kort inligtingsessie bygewoon wat meer inligting gegee het oor die Epolonderneming wat sy 100ste bestaansjaar vanjaar vier. Die werknemers het vir die leerders gewys hoe verskillende roumateriale van voer afgelaai, gestoor, gemeng en verpak word. Dit was n baie insiggewende en interessante dag. ROBERT MILES COMPETE IN SANDY MOUNT EXPRESS ENDURANCE RIDE Our very endurance horse rider, Robert Miles, took part in the Sandy Mount Express endurance horse ride. He saddled up on 1 Ocotber, doing 40km per day on El Barec Taxman and finished the race on 8 October, completing 320km on horse back. Robert has been taking part in endurance horse riding since he was 12 years old and his horse s name is Jelby Taxman. They have had El Barec Taxman for about twelve years. We ll keep an eye on Robert at the next endurance competition. MNR NAUDÉ ATTENDS SOIL FERTILITY WORKSHOP IN F.S Mr Fanie Naudé, Agricultural Science teacher, had the privilege to attend a Soil Fertility Workshop at the end of August in Parys, Free State. The workshop was presented by Mr Neal Kinsey, Agronomist from the USA. Mr Kinsey has clients in all 50 states in the USA and 75 countries worldwide. The workshop focused on using the Albrecht System to correct nutrient imbalances in the soil. Since soil siences is such a dynamic field and big part of the Agricultural Science curriculum, the knowledge he gained will be put to good use in the classroom. 5 AFRIKAANS HT/E.A.T ONDERWYSERESSE WOON LETTERKUNDE BESPREKING BY Mev A. Le Roux en Me R. Le Roux, Afrikaans HT en E.A.T onderwyseresse by HLSW het in September n letterkunde bespreking in Oos-Londen bygewoon. Aangebied deur die uitgewers en vakdeskundiges in die Oos-Londen distrik, bied die bespreking waardevolle inligting in die vakgebied. Die Onderwysdepartement beoog om in 2017 nuwe letterkunde voor te skryf vir die Gr 12 s, met die Gr 11 veranderinge wat reeds in 2016 ingefasseer is. Om interaktief met ander onderwysers te wees, is n goeie manier om nuwe maniere te kry om letterkunde aan te bied.

6 FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY APIE PARKRUN TAKES F.B BY STORM - WE LIKE TO MOVE IT MOVE IT!!! Every Saturday at 8AM a growing number of fitness fanatics, joggers, walkers, dog walkers and people enjoying the outdoors gather at the Winterberger for the weekly Apie Parkrun. Launched on June 4 th as an initiative by Mrs Bronwyn Ferreira, this has become a very popular activity for the people of Fort Beaufort. It is nice to have the win- ter season sport coaches and hostel learners also joining the run after the sport season ended in August. People of all fitness levels gather for this family event and the best of all - the relaxed atmosphere! This 5km trail run starts at the Winterberger, and snakes through the orchards and farmlands. This event is hosted free of charge - just bring some water. For more info on this event, like the Apies Parkrun facebook page and keep an eye on the W.A.H.S facebook page for photos. PARKRUN 101 * Founded by Paul Sinton- Hewitt in * First parkrun was in Bushy Park, UK. * 13 Countries has joined the parkrun initiative. * Across 980 parks globally. * Zimbabwe, Iceland and Afghanistan had parkruns. * The official parkrun site has 1,803,786 registered runners. * Biggest attendance at one run: 1,874 runners (North Beach Durban, S.A) * Oldest parkrunner is Fauja Singh at 101 years of age. Wanneer daar oor fondsinsameling gedink word, is daar geen keer aan die Gr 11 groep van 2016 nie. Onderleiding van Mev Richter en Me Botha het hierdie leerders nie net vir die leerders nie, maar ook vir die dorp n Winterdans/Steakaand aangebied. Die aand is goed ondersteun deur plaaslike mense asook van buurdorpe. In totaal is daar kaartjies verkoop. KERRIE-EN-RYS WENNER Die grootste treffer vir die personeel van Winterberg is wanneer daar aangekondig word dat daar bestellings vir etes geneem word! Hierdie keer het Mev Moss kerrie en rys gemaak en Mev Ferreira het bestellings in die dorp by plaaslike besighede en onder die personeel geneem. Die personeel en plaaslike besighede het die fondsinsameling ten bate van die koshuis goed ondersteun. Lees ook hoe die koshuis fondse ingesamel het met die MF-ete en hulle tafel by die plaasprodukte mark. HOSTAL HOSTS DINNER FOR MF PARENTS On 5 August Mrs Ferreira in conjunction with the hostel staff hosted a dinner evening in the Winterberg in aid of hostel funds. A number of parents made use of this opportunity to have a lovely dinner evening while their Gr 12 children enjoyed themselves at the matric farewell hosted in the school hall at the same time. Also local people supported the function held at the Winterberger and all the meal tickets were sold out beforehand. The hostel also had a table at the farm produce market, selling pannekoek, basaar poeding and various types of bread as a hostel fundraiser. We are privileged to have out-of-the-box staff members who continue to come up with creative ideas to raise funds. 6

7 CASUAL DAY COOLNESS! FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY Staff members enjoying Casual Day 2016 On 2 September it was time to Up your game in cooperation with WAHS and the Casual Day initiative. Casual Day is an initiative that supports people with disabilities across South Africa. SANTA S SHOEBOX - UBUNTU Jingle bells jingle bells, jingle all the way, we deliver boxes in a quantum not a slay! This year the W.A.H.S staff members pledged 20 boxes for the Santa s Shoebox initiative. Since ubuntu is one of our values, this was a great team effort from the staff. Santa s Shoebox started in 2012 as an initiative to donate a shoebox of necessities to underprivileged children. This online charity has a great number of orphanages registered with them and every year they aim to distribute shoeboxes throughout South Africa and Namibia. These W.A.H.S boxes were pledged to Grahamstown and we will be putting smiles on the faces of children in our own community since Fort Beaufort and Adelaide also has registered charities. Although we have a civi day every out weekend, this one was saved for some casual day sportiness. This year s sport theme was met with great enthusiasm by both staff members and learners talk about rugby and soccer jerseys galore! The Gr 8 and 9 groups deserve a special mention for coming out in great numbers to support the fundraiser! THANK YOU GR 8 S AND 9 S FOR SUPPORTING CASUAL DAY 2016! Apie News Mrs Le Roux, Miss Du Toit and Miss Le Roux delivering Santa s Boxes in WAHS STAFF RUNNING FOR RHINOS I ran for the rhinos, did you? Every year the Rhino Run initiative asks this question to millions of people across the globe. This year fifteen WAHS representatives parkrunners, staff members, learners and friends of the school said YES we ran for our rhinos! Every year on the 25 th of September conservationist worldwide support this 5km and 12km event to raise awareness for the continuous fight against rhino poaching Bottom: Malan Ferreira Right: The WAHS team with their special T-shirts The Gr 9 class The Gr 8 class S.A has five Rhino Runs country wide and we are fortunate enough to have one in Kenton-on-sea. With our Rhino Run T-shirts we were off to Kenton supporting a great cause! Congratulations to Malan Ferreira who clocked a time of 1:11:34 and finished fourth in the 12km men s race. 8 PRIZEGIVING CEREMONY 2016 FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY The prestigious WAHS annual award ceremony was held on Friday 14 October. On the left side of the school hall the shoes were polished, ties fixed and blazers straighttened - anxiously waiting for their moment in die spotlight. On the right side of the hall, proud parents sat, waiting to see their children receiving their awards on stage. Mrs Le Roux acted as MC and after Reverent Odendaal opened the ceremo- WAHS HONOUR THEIR BEST ny with scripture and prayer, Mr Neil Potter (SGB chairperson) and Mr Every delivered their speeches. Mrs Le Roux also welcomed Mrs Beugger, English F.A.L teacher, who was the guest of honor. After five years at WAHS, Mrs Beugger is retiring. With all the formalities out of the way, the night belonged without a doubt to the learners of WAHS who were awarded for a year of dedication and hard work! It is a great honor to be awarded the Danie Malan shield as Dux Scholar 2016 and Megan received this award with a percentage of 76%. Hy is nie net as senior sportman van die jaar aangewys nie, maar het ook die sportmanskap vir seuns toekenning gekry. Op kulturele gebied het Kallie ook nie gras onder sy voete laat groei nie en het meriete vir kultuur verwerf. n Groot eer het Kallie ook te beurt geval met die toekenning van die Van Rensburg-Skild vir lojaliteit aan die Skool, Personeel en Medeleerders. 10 GR 10 AMP CLASS ATTEND NAMPO HARVEST DAY FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY For any Agricultural Management Practice (AMP)learner, Nampo is a highlight in their school career and this year was no different. On 16 May twelve learners and two excited Agricultural staff members left for Bothaville to attend the annual harvest day. Nampo is known as the biggest harvest day in the Southern Hemisphere and a platform to display the latest technology in the Agricultural fields. The learners spent two days exploring the show grounds, looking at the latest on the Agricultural front and of course being exposed to the wide field of occupations in the field of agriculture. This field trip was made possible by a generous sponsor from Epol from the initiative of Mr Gavin Norman and his team. As an Agricultural school, it is always a privilege for learners to attend the Nampo harvest day. Hopefully it has inspired and broadend the minds of our future farmers to explore the infinite possibilities to be part of the food basket of Africa. BOERBOKKURSUS VIR GR 11 S Die Gr 11 AMP-klas het op 24 en 25 Augustus weer Mnr Stefaans Malan se plaas besoek om n boerbokbeoordelingskursus te voltooi. Hierdie kursus, wat n toets insluit, bepaal n deel van die Gr 11 s se jaarpunt en gee die toekomstige boere n kykie in die boerbokbedryf in S.A. Hierdie bedryf bied jong boere n kans om hulself te vestig siende dat daar n tekort aan boerbokvleis is. GR 10 LEARNERS ATTENDED FINAL MOHAIR SCHOOL IN JULY Michaela Clements sorting mohair After attending the mohair school in February, the Gr 10 AMP learners attended the final mohair school on 26 and 27 July. Presented by Mr Riano Greyling, technical official of Mohair S.A and Mr Gerrit van Heerden from BKB, the future mohair farmers learnt to class the mohair according to the physical traits: texture, length, style, character and general appearance. In the second halve of Gr 10 AMP curriculum, the upcoming farmers must study three commercial farm animals for agricultural use. The completed mohair course also forms part of their practical marks for stock farming. The learners who pass the mohair course are awarded a certificate from Mohair S.A and they are registered for passing the junior mohair course. Whether you plan to class mohair or put your knowledge to use as a commercial farmer, this is a must-do for the Gr 10 s! 11 WOLSKOOL 2016 FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY AANGENAME HERINNERINGE VIR BAIE OUD-APIES Die Gr 11 en 12 LBPleerders het van 16 tot 19 Julie weer die jaarlikse Wolskool, aangebied deur BKB, bygewoon. Mnr Robert Scott, Bestuurder van Wol en Opleiding het die leerders onder sy vlerk geneem en touwys gemaak in die wolbedryf. Die leerders leer ondermeer hoe om n afgeskeerde wolvag op te tel, op die sorteer- tafel oop te gooi, die vag af te rand, die verskillende dele van die vag te identifiseer, uit te haal en te klassifiseer volgens treksterkte, lengte, fynheid, kwaliteit, kondisie en voorkoms. In Gr 11 vorm hierdie kursus deel van die LBP-diereproduksie kurrikulum en die punt wat leerder hier behaal dra by tot die praktiese punt van die jaar. Vir die Gr 12 leerder vorm Wolskool deel van die LBP-leerders se PATpunt. Kwalifiseringsertifikate kan ook net deur Gr 12 leerders verwerf word. HLSW is baie trots op agt leerders wat as Wolvag-afranders gekwalifiseer het en in die besonder op Megan Starbuck wat die topprestasie behaal het deur n Springbokkop te verwerf en te kwalifiseer as n wolklasseerder by BKB. FACEBOOK REAKSIE! WAHS PRESENTS A FRESH PRODUCE MARKET After a number of bazaar absence, Mr and Mrs Delport took on the huge job of coordinating a fresh produce market in the school hall on 2 September. Late nights, long hours and hundreds of kilograms meat resulted in tables packed with mutton, steaks, mince, boerewors, chickens, milk, eggs, biltong and droëwors. The hostel ladies also joined in with some pancakes, basaarpoeding, and a variety of cakes. Locals were very pleased with the initiative of an Agricultural School to sell fresh produce. We are looking forward to an even bigger market next year! This was a true team effort led by Mr and Mrs Delport. 11

Die hoofproduksie van die aand was die skreeusnaakse Eendag is daar n sprokie vir grootmense wat deur n talentvolle groep Gr 12 s opgevoer is. Die gehoor was gaande oor Sneeuwitjie (Cayleigh Channon), Rooikappie met haar liefde vir n drankie (Suné le Roux), die familietwis van die drie varkies (Melony Henry, Emile du Preez en Stephan Marx) en die sjarmante prins (Kallie Schwab). The blood buddies of W.A.H.S donated 22 units of blood, and with various learners not able to donate due to medical reasons, we are hoping USCA BECAUSE GOD LOVES ME - Hluma Tiki for an even higher number. Each unit of blood is spun down to three different components: plasma, red blood cells and platelets. Each of these components can be given to three individuals, saving the lives of three people! Baie dankie aan al die sprekers wat deelgeneem het! UCSA takes place every Wednesday at 14h15. This organization, with Mr Nortier in charge, is for anyone who wants to take part. UCSA is a group of people devoting their time to learn more about God, having faith and being a better Christian. It is also a support base for many learners fighting their own personal battles and a platform to learn about faith. With the motivation from Mr Nortier, UCSA members also meet up for Bible study in groups. Often the UCSA members also host a DVD evening where they watch an education movie and by doing this they also raise funds for the local charity organization, Because you care. We hope to see more learners joining this initiative! Hierdie jaar was geen uitsondering nie en ses senior leerders (Gr 10 Gr 12) het ingeskyf vir die eksamen. Ongelukkig en geen junior-kandidate ingeskryf vir die junior-taalbondeksamen nie. Die eksamen toets n kandidaat se vermoë in beide Afrikaans en Engels op n huistaal vlak. Leerders word dus die geleentheid gebied om hul tweetaigheid aan die hand van n eksterne eksamenraad te toets. Baie leerders wil net hul eie taalvermoë toets, ander gebruik die geleentheid om hul tweetaligheid vir n toekomstige beroep op te skerp en laastens is dit ook voordelig vir kandidate om hul deelname en uitslae op hul CV s aan te dui. Ons sien uit na meer kandidate wat volgende jaar die Eksamen sal aandurf. 13

The Senior drama group obtained a double gold award. However the day belonged to Mr Harris and the English learners with their formal poetry. They obtained 3 silver awards, 7 gold and 1 double gold. Interschool fever is a very serious disease in Apie land. You are prone to contract this disease at the beginning of August and with an incubation period of about two weeks, the illness struck on the 13 th of August this year. Typical symptoms of this disease include a total lack of interest in all school work, hyperactivity, and a sudden urge to destroy anything that remotely resembles a Kwagga And when you in Gr 12, the trail exams cure you! Interschool s kicked off with the 1 st Hockey team beating AG 1 0 after a well-deserved goal by Bianca Chowles. The netball was off to a good start with two games going the way of WAHS and two to AG. The 1 st Netball team was up against a notorious AG team. WAHS had the home ground advantage and AG the advantage of the previous victory in April. The girls in gold fought for 40 minutes and were unfortunate to lose with three goals. This was however a showcase of skills and individual brilliance Sweet revenge: A very proud 1 st Rugby Team of WAHS Megan and Danielle Suné le Roux Loyiso Swartbooi from both teams. On the rugby field, the men in gold were on a winning streak started by die u/ 15 teams. The 1 st team rugby played the final game of the day and with their 11 0 victory secured a five game white wash over AG. Morgan contributed six points with his boot and captain, Kallie Schwab, scored the only try of the match. WAHS came out in great numbers and we couldn t have asked for a more spirited start to the Inter-week. The Apie guys edges AG with 28 points to 27. The Apie girls clearly outnumbered the girls from A.G and had a convincing vic- tory. Unfortunately we lost the medal for the first boy in to A.G but Tayla Christian assured that the medal for the first girl in stays in Apie land. This year the cross country athletes made use of the brand new scenic Park Run route on the farm. Thank you to all the athletes who participated and supported in great numbers. Om meer spanne speelkans te gee, is St Andrew s College ook genader om rugbyspanne te bring. Ongelukkig kon die dames van Winterberg slegs vier spanne op die baan sit omdat 10 spelers uit die onderskeie spanne aan die Oos-Kaap proewe in Oos- Londen moes deelneem. Nie te min het beide rugby en netbal goed presteer. Unfortunately UHS could not accommodate Winterberg s netball teams but they all attended to support the fellow Apies. UHS proved to be too strong for the men in gold and the 1 st Rugby team suffered a 33 8 defeat. The promising u/15 rugby team managed to secure a win. Princess Chinyama en Tatum van Schoor het saam met nege ander spelers as deel van die Amathole-netbalspan aan die Oos- Kaap netbalproewe in Oos-Londen deelgeneem. Hier is Tatum en Princess opgeneem in die o/16b-span wat tydens die wintervakansie aan die Rhinoweek in Vanderbylpark deelgeneem het. This midweek fixture is always played in good spirit and this year was no different. The u/14 side suffered a loss to VG but the u/16b s managed a one-goal victory. The u/16a and 2 nd team suffered a narrow defeat but the excited spectators could hardly wait for the 1 st team clash ahead. The girls in gold were off to a slow start trailing four goals after the first quarter. However, the showed their trademark fighting spirit and caught up with VG after the second quarter. A spectacular display of skill and individual brilliance resulted in WAHS starting the third quarter in the driving seat. Die eerste oorwinning was teen HS Middelburg, die tweede in Bloemfontein waar hulle teen verskillende tennisgroepe gespeel het. Die laaste geveg was op Aliwal-Noord waar hulle behoorlik die vyande gewys het wie is baas. Tyd vir pret was daar darem ook en hulle het een aan by die Gariep-dam oorgeslaap. Geluk aan die tennisspelers en dankie aan Mnr Ferreira vir sy tennisgeesdrif!

FREE NEWSPAPER TEMPLATE DELIVERED BY HLSW RUGBY VEE VLOER MET CHS Die CHS-derby bly ongetwyfeld een van die mees kompeterende sportdae op die HLSWsportkalender en hierdie jaar was geen uitsondering nie. Op 30 Julie het die jongelinge in die juniorspanne reeds vroeg-vroeg hul stemme dik gemaak en namate die dag verloop, het die opwinding opgebou vir die eerstespan wedstryde. Na n goeie vertoning deur die 2de hokkiespan, moes HLSW se Eerstes ongelukkig die knie buig voor CHS. Vier gemotiveerde netbalspanne het nie teruggestaan vir CHS nie, en beide die o/16 A- span en Tweede span het met onderskeidelik twee en een doel verloor. Die Eerste netbalspan kon ongelukkig nie hul agterstand van die eerste twee kwarte uitwis nie. Die dag het egter aan die manne in goud behoort wat n skoonskip oorwinning oor CHS behaal het! Kanya Sambe Dlanga onder die doelpaal Parkies het deur die verdediging gebreek en nadat Morgan Potter die drie verdoel het, het Winterberg die wedstryd met 12-7 beklink. Tatum van Schoor (V) sit druk op die HD van De Vos Malan Suné le Roux op die aanval FIRST SERVE FOR 2016/17 TENNIS SEASON On 29 August the WAHS tennis team served the first ball for the 2016/ tennis season. The match was against Marlow HS and although only Cayleigh Channon and Emile du Preez won their matches, the players really played good tennis and enjoyed the afternoon. Die Eerste Tennisspan Provincial tennis trials is already in January, keep an eye out for the results. 21 U/15 CRICKET READY FOR 2016/2017 SEASON The u/15 cricket team played two matches this term. The first was played against Adelaide. WAHS batted first and scored a competitive 125 runs with Marcel du Preez being the standout batsman with 26 runs (not out). In a tightly contested game, Adelaide scored the winning runs on the second last ball of the game. The second match was played against Volkskool. Both teams struggled with their batting as the pitch provided plenty of assistance to the bowlers. WAHS fought back bravely; however, Volkskool edged the men in gold. Mention must also be made of the performances of Ettiene Theart and Jose Stewart who contributed with their batting and bowling in both games.

Yes it was the night of WAHS s matric farewell 2016! The boys turned into men and the ladies had heads turning with their beautifull dresses when the cars pulled in to drop the couples on the red carpet. We had the sports models, the vintage models, the bikes, the tractors but without a doubt the prize for the most original idea should go to the group of Gr 12 s who decided there is no better and more appropriate way to arrive at the MF than in the vehicle you started your Apie life with: Die broodblik! Inside the school hall the guests were swept away by little Arabia by Gr 11 s serving the guests of honour in traditional Arabian attire. The principal, Mr Every, welcomed the parents of the Gr 12 s and after a short speech, he made a toast to honour the parents of the youngsters. After a lovely three-course meal and speeches by Mr Every and Headgirl, Cayleigh Channon, and Headboy, Stephan Marx, the dance floor was opened it was time to get the party started! This was followed by a special assembly to say goodbye to the class of Mrs Le Roux gave the learners soul food for the journey ahead: use the talents our Heavenly Father gave you. The rest of the school was entertained by a slide show of forgotten memories, mostly from Gr 8. With the words from Miley Cyres we said goodbye: There s always gonna be another mountain, I m always gonna wanna make it move. Always gonna be an uphill battle, sometimes I m gonna have to lose. WINTERBERG: EK SAL ALTYD ONTHOU My best Winterberg memories are the times I spent with my friends and the nonsense that we got up to at hostel. Also the times spent on the farm on the weekends. Nikita McQueen My memory of Winterberg will be all the friends I made and all the time spent together in hostel, on the hockey field and on the farm. Megan Starbuck I will always remember when I use to have my horses on school grounds. Swimming in the river with friends and galloping on horse back through the orchards. The yummy Sunday lunches in hostel. The after study night swims in the school swimming pool, but most of all I will miss my amazing friends when we go our seperate ways after our last exam and definitely those Hoërskool liefde moments. Jakkals kom verby, sien vir hasie en die bottel en dog hy vat ook maar n sluk voor hy vir hasie eet. Maar die mampoer kap hom ook om. So lê die twee daar en hiëna kom verby. Hy kan sy geluk nie glo nie en drink ook aan die bottel; dieselfde storie, val net daar neer, uitgepass. Leeu kom op die storie af en besluit hy eet nie aan jakkalse of hiënas nie, en hasie is te klein om oor te worry. Hy vat toe maar n paar groot slukke en kort voor lank slaan hy ook neer. Met dié begin hasie roer, sit regop met n hewige hoofpyn. Hy skud sy kop, trek sy ore reg en kyk toe so om hom. Hy sien hoe lê leeu, jakkals en hiëna uitgepass om hom. Hy mompel: Hel, dit smaak my mos ek raak aggressief as ek gesuip is! Die blondine bel haar kêrel: Kom gou! Ek het n legkaart gekoop en daar is duisende stukke en ek weet nie waar om te begin nie!
