This exciting event allows your student teams to create a sidewalk chalk piece live on the Saturday of ArtFest Fort Myers weekend and compete for cash prizes. ArtFest brings in talented professional chalk artists, who will share their knowledge of this art form with your students and judge the competition, as well as create their own art piece on competition day This educational & creative experience is open to all Lee County high school aged students. We encourage art teachers from all schools to register teams. Team = three high school students in grades 9 through 12. Please feel free to submit more than one Team, as space will be available. (We want to make sure that all schools have an opportunity to participate, and we have a total of 40 spaces on the street.) Confirmation of team status will be sent to all teachers on Dec. 15 th. The theme for student and professional artists is Exploring a Bright New World and artwork must be style of any art movement. Will you create atmosphere and landscape on Mars ala Vincent van Gogh s Starry Night or develop a Picasso style cubist Marco Polo on the Silk Road portrait? Use this broad theme to your creative advantage Fast Chalk Block Facts: December 2, Registration Forms Due Friday, February 3, Student artists are required to attend an Instructional Session with the professional chalk artists from 3 PM to 5 PM on the ArtFest Fort Myers site (Adult supervision is mandatory). Saturday, February 4, Student artist teams will create a chalk mural measuring 6 feet by 6 feet on a black asphalt surface at ArtFest Fort Myers 2017, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM. Students and adult chaperone report to the competition area by 8:00 AM. Teams will be provided one box of assorted chalk, chalk line for gridding, a ruler, tape, cardboard & one kneeling pad, erasers & 6 x 6 mural location. Teams must complete their murals by 3:30 PM on Saturday Judging by professional chalk artists will take place from 3:30 PM to 4:15 PM. Winning teams will be announced by 4:30 PM. 3 Chalk Block Rules of Entry 1. All artwork submitted must follow the announced theme, be pre-approved by the team teacher/supervisor and be produced exclusively by the students submitting the artwork. No parent assisted or teacher assisted artwork is allowed. 2. Participating teams must attend a workshop with Professional Chalk Artists on Friday, February 3, 2017, from 3 to 5 P.M. in front of the Allure Bldg., 1300 Hendry Street, Fort Myers, FL (at the Caloosahatchee River). Bring your Team s gridded artwork image and arrive 30 minutes early to allow for parking-it is a busy weekend downtown. Teachers and/or adult chaperones must also be in attendance. 3. All artwork must be produced, on site, within a designated 6-foot by 6-foot square, using only pastels supplied by ArtFest Fort Myers. All work must be identified with student s school name (and team number, if appropriate) chalked clearly below the art piece. 4. On Saturday, February 4 th, the Chalk Block Competition registration begins at 8am, north of the intersection of Edwards Drive and Hendry Street, at the Chalk Block Tent. Upon arrival, Teams will register and choose a chalk mural space. Saving spaces for other teams will not be permitted. 5. On Saturday morning, each team must designate a team member to chalk their school logo or emblem in a 10 inch by 10 inch square in a designated grid at the beginning of the Chalk Block area. 6. All student Chalk Murals will be judged at end of day Saturday, February 4th between 3:30-4:15 P.M. Ribbons and cash awards will be distributed to the winning team members as follows: 1 st Place Team $100 each, 2 nd Place Team $50 each & 3 rd Place Team $25 each. The decision of the judges is final. 7. The criteria for judging will be: Use of Theme, Impact, Feeling/Mood, Presentation, Creativity/Originality, Effort/Care and Group Cooperation. 8. NO pastels/chalk can be brought from home. No radios or boom boxes will be permitted. 9. ArtFest Fort Myers reserves the right to enforce all rules and violation of rules may result in revoking of any privilege associated with participation in the Chalk Block.
