The Eagle Post PAGES: 2. Academics 3. Clubs Do you have a story that needs covered, or do you want an ad in the school newspaper, The Eagle Post? Talk to Madison- Plains High School Journalism teacher Timothy Crowder, or journalism team members to learn more. Friday, March 28, 2014 Issue 2 A Huge Title Hits the Small Stage by Austin Wilson The Madison- Plains Drama team is taking on a very ambitious title. Some of your parents might know the name. The play is called A Streetcar Named Desire. This title had a movie adaptation in the 1950 s and the film won 3 oscars for best actress, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress. The main character is a distraught school teacher named Blance DeBouis, who is played by Marissa Knisley, who comes seeking the comfort and support of her only sister, Stella, who is played by Abby Thompson. Stella s husband, Stanley, who is played by Austin Wilson, is not so warmed to Blanche staying at the Kowalski household and threatening his authority. Stanley s friend Harold Mitch Mitchell starts to fall for the once rich school teacher. Everything is going fine until Stanley starts digging up Blanche s past. Come see the spring play to learn the outcome! The play is a whopping 103 pages of drama. Lead actress Marissa Knisley stated I am very nervous. I have a lot of lines! This drama production will be one of the heftiest plays that the drama team has ever put on. The play will be going up in May. Come and support the drama production! Madison-Plains High School Journalism Named_Desire_(1951_film) Quick Announcement By Gabriel Joseph Gary The end of the year is approaching rather quickly. All seniors need to make sure that they have their scholarship applications and college applications in. If any Senior has any questions make sure to see Mrs. Shoaf in the guidance office. Also make sure to get in your community service hours in order to graduate.

Artwork Headed to Columbus by Amber Massie Local fifth-grader at Madison-Plains Intermediate School, Ellie Call has been given a great opportunity. Elli Call, who is in fifth grade, has had her own artwork put on display. The artwork will be shown in the 2014 Ohio Art Education Association s Young People s Art Exhibition. There are approximately 130 other pieces of art that were selected. The exhibit features art from grades ranging from Kindergarten to Eighth grade. People can view the art in the Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus from March Pieces were selected from the nine regions of the state that represent the OAEA. The Academics exhibit is sponsored by the Ohio Art Education Association. The OAEA is the professional organization for art teachers in Ohio. The OAEA works to encourage the arts and give credit to the students who present quality art. Ellie Call s artwork has been submitted by none other than the Intermediate School art teacher, Jessie Mace. March 15, at the Rhodes State Office Tower, an awards ceremony will be held for the families and teachers of all the students whose artwork is being displayed. This is a great accomplishment for Ellie and our school, so if you can come and show your support for her! Blood Drive by Torey Taylor After twice having to reschedule the American Red Cross Blood Drive due to bad weather and missing school, MP has finally set the date to hold the event. The Red Cross we be at the school for the morning and afternoon of April 16, They come seeking two different types of donations: blood and plasma. You may be able to donate one or the other, but if you are sixteen or younger you must have a parent signed permission slip. 2 Even though students have filled out the information sheet two times over, Mrs. Tobi Briggs, superviser of the MP Student Council, says, The American Red Cross gives us a blank sign-up sheet every time we reschedule this thing, so kids have to keep filling out their information if they want to donate. Remember students, on April 16th when you get to donate blood: stay hydrated, eat something to keep you full, and if you get lightheaded don t hesitate to ask to lie down.

The Show Must Go On by Emma Sampson The 2014 Madison- Plains High School Senior Showcase went off without a hitch. With a full house on both Friday and Saturday, Mr. Spohler said, The shows were VERY successful. He also was very proud of each of the seniors, They all did an excellent job and conducted themselves very well. Of the three plays, two were comedies and the third was a deep drama. Three seniors were chosen to put on a one act play of their choice. The first of the three, Don t Fear the Reaper was directed by Torey Taylor. The comedy featuring the notorious G-O-D, the prince of darkness, death, and conception, with many strong supporting roles. The second play titled, Who s Your Mummy?, was directed by Brady Simmons. This comedy is all about an archaeologist father, Odis, a daughter Penny and a delusional, senile granny. Penny dreams of escaping her predictable life, with country boy Calvin Dobbs. With a few bumps, vultures and an Indian along the way, the comedy had the crowd laughing from start to finish. The third play, The Horrors of Dr.Moreau directed by Marissa Knisely, was a deep drama with very serious, difficult roles. Each of the actors portrayed beast people that lived through fear in the House of Pain. The next step for MPHS drama club is the spring production. Con- Clubs gratulations to all drama club members on another successful show (see cover for information). Gabe Jones (Odis) and daughter, Emma Davis (Penny) Book Club By Torey Taylor Pictured Below: Brandon Gartin reading in the library 3 The high school librarian, Heidi Fletcher, says that the next upcoming project for the book club will be to recruit readers to read aloud to the younger children in the elementary classes. This will take place the second week of April, more commonly known as the international week of reading. Many students share this excitement.

College Football Playoffs by Gabriel Joseph Gary After years of discussion, there will be college football playoffs going into effect starting this upcoming season. The top four teams at the end of the season will play in two semifinal games to decide who plays for the National Championship. Six bowl games will be hosted as the semifinal games. Finally the decision was made to make playoffs because of the unfair rules. People felt that teams with bad records getting into the national championship had an easy ride. Not any more, because they will have to compete against the other top teams in the country. The 2014 college football season is coming up fast. This year should be an interesting one for people who love watching football and playoff matches. This year should be more exciting and thrilling than past seasons. Swim Team Triumphs by Emma Sampson Madison-Plains High School swim team finished their season very successfully. i know the question that comes to mind, Madison- Plains has a swim team? the answer is yes. The small but strong two man team of Tessa Rohrs (sophomore) and Emma Sampson (freshman) showed a dominance in their first season in the MSL. Throughout the season, the dynamic duo represented the high school well, with two MSL titles, multiple school records, district and state qualifiers, and both girls received the scholar athlete awards. At the MSL championships, Rohrs swam the 100 yard breaststroke and the 100 yard freestyle. She placed top ten in both, and had a 5th place finish in the 100 yard breastroke and claimed the school record in the 100 yard free. Sampson swam the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke. Sampson claimed the MSL title in both events, setting school records to be broken later again later on in the season. These placements moved the overall team score to fifth out of nine teams. The average size of swim teams competing in the Mid State League is swimmers, boys and girls. The high placement of a two member team surprised many. Sampson was named first team MSL at the end of the season. Sectionals were the starting point on the road to states, held at Columbus Academy. Rohrs swam the 100 yard freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke. Sampson swam the 200 individual medley and the 100 yard 4 backstroke. Both Rohrs and Sampson performed well and moved on to the Central District Championships, held at Ohio State University. Sampson placed third at disricts in the 200 yard individual medley and fifth in the 100 yard backstroke, making her first podium appearance and earned herself a spot at the Ohio State High School Swimming Championships held in Canton Ohio. Sampson made placed twelfth in the 200 yard individual medley and eighteenth in the 100 yard backstroke, a high ranking for a freshman, Sampson stated, my goal in the next three years is to continue to compete at state high school level and work my way to the top, hoping to claim a state champion title.

Baseball by Jaycee Raines Coach Durban has a good feeling coming into this 2014 baseball season. He has confidence in his players and he said we are strong up the middle we have speed and skill. He really wants his players working out or playing baseball in the offseason. He wants to focus on getting players to keep returning. With many returning he can keep building up a strong team. He also wants his team to bond and continue playing baseball in the off season. He is hoping to gets new benches and helmets this year for the team. He won t be able to get new uniforms until The reason for this is because football gets uniforms this year and baseball gets them next year. The baseball team had their first scrimmage on saturday march 22. The Varsity ended the game in a loss 7-2. The J.V. ended their game in a loss also 8-2 with the majority of the runs in the first inning. Durban is excited to see what his team will turn out to be in a couple of years. Wrestling by Lee Griffin 5 There were a handful of Madison- Plains wrestlers that competed in the 2014 Ohio-Way state wrestling tournament located in Tiffin,Ohio. The tournament took place at the athletic football practice coliseum. This tournament hosts Ohio wrestlers and an attraction of Ohio s youth of wrestlers. While being inside of an athletic football field they had plenty of room to have another 6 mats. Four of Madison- Plains wrestlers attended this state tournament all of them placed above 4th. The champions are Jake Datz in weight class 194 with a pin in the finals, Andrew Bevan in the 215 weight class. He placed first in 215 and 2nd in the 223 (17-18). Joe Datz placed 3rd in the 174, he fell short against the returning champ at 171 in the first period. Then a freshman A.J Straight placing 3rd in 157, he is a returning Ohio way placer and looks to keep his wrestling hopes of a state title next year at the OHSAA wrestling tournament.
