1 Tryout Requirements Candidates for the BRHS/ACMS Cheer Squad must meet the following requirements: Sign up with the cheer coach within a designated one-week period prior to tryouts. The parent or guardian and candidate must attend the required (mandatory) pre-tryout meeting. Have an overall 70 grade point average at the time of tryouts. Meet No Pass/No Play policy, which applies to cheerleaders. Must pass all four core classes each semester. (If you fail a core course either semester you are not eligible to tryout) Must have a record of minimal discipline problems. Students with two or more Class II offenses or any Class III infraction (as listed by the code of conduct) will be prohibited from trying out. Must attend the Tryout Clinic (TBA) and Mock Tryouts (TBA). Return all forms by the first day of clinic. All uniforms from previous year must be returned. All money owed from previous year must be paid prior to tryouts. Any student suspended from or quitting the BRHS/ACMS cheerleading program must have approval from the principal, athletic director, and cheer coach before being eligible to participate in the next tryouts. All cheerleaders must follow the Athletic Handbook rules and guidelines for all athletes. Clinic Tryout clinic will be taught by an outside source such as UCA, Spirit Event Coordinators, past or present college cheerleaders, outside cheer coaches, or cheer choreographers. A video of the tryout routines will be provided for all candidates through a download link via Dropbox. A DVD copy may be obtained if Internet access at home or school is not available to candidates. Outgoing cheerleaders (12 th and 8 th graders) will assist with cheer clinic and tryouts. The outgoing cheerleaders will learn the material on the day of clinic and will be available to assist the candidates at clinic during an open gym time. Open gym time will be provided for two evenings following the regular tryout clinic time. The Alexander City Board of Education will pay for any fees charged by the choreographers. Judges Judges from out of town will be secured with an outside source such as UCA, Spirit Event Coordinators, outside cheer coaches, or college cheerleaders. Diversity will be requested when securing these judges. The Alexander City Board of Education will pay for any fees charged by the judges. At the conclusion of the tryout/tryout phase, judges will submit score sheets directly to an accountant to be tabulated. Accounting & Monitoring of Tabulations An outside accountant, with no direct family ties to the candidates, will tabulate the scores. The Alexander City Board of Education will pay for any fees charged by the accountant. 1

2 At minimum, there will be two diverse community representatives selected by school administration to monitor tabulations and verify results of the accounting process. In the event of a tie for girls trying out, the cheer technique score will be used first to determine placement on the team. If an additional tiebreaker is needed, the second score to be used will be the toe touch score. If still yet another tiebreaker is needed, the third score to be used will be the dance score. In the event of a tie for boys trying out, the cheer technique score will be used first to determine placement on the team. If an additional tiebreaker is needed, the second score to be used will be the toe touch score. If still yet another tiebreaker is needed, the third score to be used will be the rhythm and timing score. Following tabulations, the accountant will provide the principal with a list of scores. Posting of Scores and New Squad The principal will post results on the evening of the tryout. The new squad will be posted on the gym door and on the school website. Tryouts A school administrator will be present throughout the tryout. Tryouts are closed to the public. During the tryout, a second attempt at performing a skill is allowed. If there is a second attempt at a tumbling skill, it must be the same skill or lower. Using a video to tryout is allowed in the case of an extreme injury documented with a doctor s excuse. The candidate must also provide a doctor s statement with a prognosis that the athlete will likely be cleared for participation by May 15 th. The cheer coach, principal, and athletic director must approve any video tryout opportunity. The candidate MUST provide any video footage submitted for tryout. Video footage must highlight the required skills in order for judges to award points appropriately. If an injured candidate cannot provide video footage for a tryout, the candidate CANNOT tryout. All video footage must be no more than 1 year old. The candidate s name may not appear on the video. The video must reach the cheer coach or athletic director 24 hours prior to tryouts. During the tryout process, candidates will be identified using an assigned number, without names being disclosed to judges, accountants, or monitors involved. Questions After Tryouts Questions or concerns following tryouts should be addressed first with the coach of the cheer squad, followed by the school principal, and then the superintendent of Alexander City Schools. 2
