1 HOWARD MIDDLE SCHOOL CHEER HUSKIES TRYOUT PACKET Thank you for your interest in the Howard Middle School Cheer Team. In this packet, you will find required paperwork, important dates, and other relevant information. Please read and comprehend all of the enclosed information prior to tryouts. All paperwork must be returned in a timely manner. CHEERLEADING TRYOUT DATES Cheer Clinics will be held March from 4:00pm to 6:30pm. (PAPER WORK MUST BE TURNED IN BEFORE PARTICIPATING IN ANY CLINICS). Tryout material will be taught during this time. Official try-outs will be held on Saturday, March 25, from 9:00 am-12:00 pm. PLEASE NOTE: Failure to be picked up on time will jeopardize your chance to be selected for the cheer team.. ELIGIBILITY To be eligible for tryouts, a student must have been: promoted (promoted to the next grade at the end of the school year) present at least 85% of the previous semester To maintain eligibility, at the close of this school year, the student must be: promoted to the next grade in good standings, based on the Student Code of Conduct for Bibb County Public Schools REQUIRED PAPERWORK The following MUST BE turned in BEFORE you can participate in clinics or tryouts: Forms found in this packet: *****Be sure to print, complete, and return ONLY PAGES 8-18 from this packet. Participation in cheer clinics and try-outs will be prohibited if forms are missing or incomplete. SELECTION CRITERIA Each candidate will be evaluated based on communication skills, motion techniques, group techniques, dance techniques, jump techniques, and gymnastics skills. Additionally, faculty evaluations, academic/discipline history, and the coach s overall skills assessment will be used to evaluate each candidate. During the cheer clinic, candidates will go over the following: Cheer/chant/dance (These will be taught during the three clinic days.) Jumps (toe touch, right or left hurdler, and herkie) Descriptions and pictures of these jumps can be found on the UCA website Additionally, there are many YouTube videos that demonstrate these jumps. 2 CLINIC/TRYOUT ATTIRE During clinic days and the day of try-outs, please wear comfortable, length-appropriate black shorts and a white t-shirt. Appropriate bras must be worn, if you are female. Please do not wear bras, or other items, that can be seen through the t-shirt. Basketball shorts and pajamas are not permitted. Additionally, denim shorts, jewelry, and artificial nails are not permitted. Your hair should be pulled back off the shoulders. On the official try-out day (Saturday, March 25, 2017), you will need to wear dark colored shorts (black or navy blue) and a white t-shirt. Your hair should be off your shoulders. No jewelry, nail polish, or artificial nails should be worn. Please do not wear any previous cheerleading or dance attire during tryout week. SELECTED CANDIDATES Students selected to the cheer team will be notified by a phone call. Please note, the phone calls will be made ONLY after verification of required paperwork, including teacher recommendations. The cheer roster will eventually be posted on the school s website. Again, all paperwork must be in no later than March 15, The earlier it is submitted, the better your chances are for meeting all deadlines. You can either drop the paperwork off or mail it to Howard Middle School. If you are mailing the information, it must be received no later than March 15, Please make sure that all paperwork is included in a file folder or an envelope. ALL paperwork must include the candidate s name. Please note, Teacher Recommendation Forms must be turned in by teachers, not applicants. Accordingly, be sure to give each teacher the recommendation form in a timely manner. For those who make the team, a mandatory PARENT/CHEERLEADER/COACH meeting will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 9am. 3 CHEER TEAM CONSTITUTION HOWARD MIDDLE SCHOOL PURPOSE It shall be the purpose of this organization to promote and uphold school spirit, to develop good sportsmanship among students, to support athletic programs and to develop positive relationships in the community and between schools during athletic events. The organization's goal is to work in harmony with the administration, faculty, band, athletic teams and other school organizations. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS a) A candidate must be a first year sixth, seventh, or eighth grader. b) A candidate must meet the student-athlete eligibility requirements set forth by Bibb County Public Schools. c) Each candidate must turn in written certification by a medical doctor stating that she/he has passed a physical examination and is capable of cheering. d) Each candidate must submit the following paperwork BEFORE you can participate in clinics or tryouts: CANDIDATE INFORMATION SHEET STATEMENT OF PERMISSION AND AGREEMENT MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION, INSURANCE, & CONSENT FORM AND- PHYSICAL SCREENING FORM BIBB COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS CODE OF CONDUCT TEACHER RECOMMENDATION FORMS MEMBERSHIP Current 6 th and 7 th graders need to provide a copy to each teacher on their schedule. Current 5 th graders who have the same teacher for multiple subjects, can provide one form for the teacher. However, the form but must include academic information for each course the student has with that particular teacher. a) The cheer team will usually consist of a maximum of 25 members; however, the number chosen is at the coach s discretion. The coach is not required to select a specific number of cheer team members. b) Additional members may be selected at any point the coach deems necessary. c) Participation on the cheer team during a previous school term does not guarantee a position on the cheer team. Members are chosen on a year-to-year basis. TRYOUTS Each candidate will be evaluated based on communication skills, motion techniques, group techniques, dance techniques, jump techniques, gymnastics skills, and possibly stunt techniques. Additionally, faculty evaluations, academic/discipline history, and the coach s overall skills assessment will be used to evaluate each candidate. SELECTION OF CAPTAIN AND CO-CAPTAINS The coach will make the selection of the captain and co-captains on the basis of leadership abilities, attitude, peer respect and general abilities and knowledge of cheerleading. CHEER TEAM ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS a) Summer Camp and Spring/Summer Conditioning-- All cheerleaders are required to attend summer camp. Students who are unable to attend camp will not be able to serve on the cheer team. This camp has been tentatively scheduled for June 1-3, Additionally, Spring/Summer Conditioning is required. The tentative schedule will be provided on April 8, b) One-day clinics Mandatory clinics will be scheduled by the coach, as needed throughout the year. c) Cheer Booster Events Each cheer team member must have a parent/guardian/representative at Cheer Booster sanctioned events. d) Social Activities Members are encouraged, but not required, to attend various social activities/events. The coach should be notified, in writing, of plans not to attend these activities/events. e) Games/Practices/Events Members are required to attend all games, practices, and coach-sanctioned events. Excessive absences will not be tolerated. Action taken will be at the discretion of the coach. FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS The parent/guardian is responsible for the cost of the cheer team member attending summer camp, purchasing uniform and practice items, warm up suits, and any other costs related to the cheer team. Further, parents/guardians are responsible for providing transportation for their children to and from games/events. A cheerleader might have occasional additional expenses such as spirit items, money for trips, etc. The financial obligation (camp, uniforms, accessories, etc.) for the school year is $800. The payment schedule, is set based on deadlines with vendors, etc. All payments must be in a secured form (money order, cashier s check, cash). For those who are selected for the team, an initial payment of $200 will be required no later than April 8, Cheer camp has been tentatively scheduled for June 1-3, Please note, all deadlines for financial responsibilities must be adhered to. Failure to meet financial obligations and deadlines will lead to suspension and/or dismissal from the cheer team. Parents/guardians of cheer team members will receive a written copy of the payment schedule. Page 3 of 20

4 TRANSPORTATION Each cheerleader is responsible for securing transportation to and from all games, practices, and events, unless otherwise communicated by the coach. Parents/guardians and cheer team members will be informed when the team will use school transportation to and/or from events. UNIFORMS AND PRACTICE WEAR a) The parent/guardian is responsible for the purchase of uniforms and practice wear. Uniforms/practice wear must be paid in full prior to issuance. b) The cheerleader is responsible for any alternations and all upkeep of uniforms. c) All uniform items, including practice wear, should only be worn for events designated by the coach and the administration. d) Cheerleading shoes are not to be worn as casual shoes and should be worn for practices, games, pep rallies and cheer team events only. PRACTICE SCHEDULES Practice schedules are set by the coach. These schedules will not be finalized until an official schedule for each season has been received. Please note, practice days for basketball season may be totally different from those of football season. The coach will not change the practice schedule based on the individual schedules of cheer team members. Schedules must be adhered to in order to maintain a position on the cheer team. Additionally, if a cheer team member s attendance issues (e.g., tardiness, absences, early departures, late departures) negatively impact the performance and/or morale of the cheer team, the member will not be able to perform. The coach will determine the impact and the consequences. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR CHEERLEADERS Cheerleaders will: Be an asset to the team. Maintain a positive attitude and promote unity among cheer team members; avoid negative verbal and nonverbal communication. Be able to receive, and gracefully accept, constructive feedback from the team and/or coach. Follow the protocol for uniforms. Uniforms are only to be worn for games and other coach-sanctioned events No one, other than the cheerleader, should wear any part of the cheerleader's uniform, warm-up, or other official clothing. In case of cold weather, cheerleading jackets and warm-ups are the ONLY covering for the uniforms. Any exceptions must receive the coach s approval. APPEARANCE & PERSONAL HYGIENE EXPECTATIONS a) Uniforms and shoes should be kept clean at all times. Uniforms should be neatly pressed and in good repair. b) Jewelry must not be worn while practicing or cheering. This includes post earrings. c) Cosmetics must not be excessively applied. A natural, wholesome look is desired. Under no circumstances should make-up be applied in front of a crowd. (All grooming issues should be handled in private. This includes, but is not limited to, combing/brushing hair, etc.) d) All hairstyles must be neat and secured off the face, neck, and shoulders. Hairstyles worn for games should be simple and should not require adjusting during a game. If long enough, hair should be pulled back in a ponytail. e) Cheerleaders should look their best at all times. Maintaining healthy habits is a part of looking and feeling great. Cheerleaders need to: Keep under arms and legs shaved. Have neat appearance at all times. Keep uniform and shoes clean and repaired at all times. Use deodorant and appropriate feminine products. FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES a) All cheerleaders will participate in any fund raising projects that are officially sanctioned by the coach. Money earned will be used for miscellaneous expenses throughout the year. b) Fund-raising opportunities may be provided through the Cheer Booster Club. The president of the Booster Club (or designee) will share these opportunities with parents/guardians and cheer team members. The funds are used to provide extras (e.g., meals, t-shirts, event funding, etc.) c) All school-based fundraisers must be approved by the board of education. Additionally, all local board and school-based fundraising protocols must be adhered to. Page 4 of 20

5 GAME/EVENT GUIDELINES CHEERLEADERS WILL: a) Arrive at games/events at the time provided by the coach. If a cheerleader is late for games/events (or does not attend), the cheerleading coach will take appropriate action. b) Refrain from wearing nail polish and jewelry. c) Keep nails at a short length at all times. (A fist should be able to be made comfortably). d) Refrain from eating, drinking, or gum chewing while cheering or practicing. No food should be brought to games or practice, unless approved by the coach. e) Remain in the area designated by the coach for the duration of the game. f) Cheer at all times when the team is on the field or the court. g) Take care of all personal needs prior to games/practices. h) Interact respectfully with all game attendees. i) Refrain from sidebar conversations with the crowd while cheering (this includes family members). j) Show spirit at all times (cheer, jump, smile basically, continue to engage the crowd). k) Stand at attention/stance when not cheering. l) Know the rules, etc. of the sport/event. m) Refrain from cheering while our quarterback is calling plays or while our player is shooting a free throw. Additionally, refrain from cheering when a player is injured. n) Complete any other assigned tasks that are designated by the coach or her designee. o) Pay close attention to cheerleading calendars. Bring calendars to practice to make any necessary changes. Cheerleaders must maintain constant contact with the coach and other cheerleaders to remain informed of upcoming events and/or meetings. Failure to attend a practice/game will not be excused just because a cheerleader did not know it was scheduled. p) Other guidelines will be issued at the coach s discretion. 6 SUSPENSION & DISMISSAL Suspensions A cheerleader will be suspended from participating in games, pep rallies or any other activity for reasons that include, but are not limited to, the following: EXCESSIVE ABSENCES/TARDINESS [Absences/tardiness, whether excused or unexcused, can have a negative impact on the team s morale and performance.] Failure to arrive on time or be picked up on time from practice, games, or any cheer team-related events. Failure to complete assigned duties Failure to abide by cheerleading rules, coach s rules, and school rules Failure to cooperate with team, coach, faculty/staff member or administration Blatant disrespect towards captain, coach or faculty/staff member, or administration Failure to turn in required paperwork and failure to meet financial obligations Failure to respect school property Placement in Detention and/or In-School Suspension Dismissals A. Offenses that result in dismissal Disciplinary problems Conduct unbecoming of a cheerleader which reflects upon the reputation of the school and the cheer team "F"s on report cards Insubordination toward coaches, captain or school personnel Out of School Suspension and/or more than one In-School Suspension B. Tryout eligibility A cheerleader who is dismissed or resigns during a year for reasons other than health (or extenuating circumstances) will not be eligible for tryouts the following year. 7 HOWARD MIDDLE SCHOOL RULES FOR CHEERLEADING PURPOSE The objective of the Howard Middle School Cheer Team is to effectively execute a school spirit program that supports the athletic teams and promotes the school itself. Cheerleaders will serve as positive role models and leaders for HMS and should promote sportsmanship within our school and among other schools. The highest priority should be to display and encourage spirit and pride for HMS. TEAM MEMBERS Members will be chosen at a formal tryout session. (See the Constitution for more details.) PRACTICES AND GAMES The cheer team will have practice each week. A tentative schedule will be given out at the beginning of each month. All practices are mandatory, and other schedules should revolve around cheerleading practices. Additional practices may be added, when needed. During football season, games are usually held on Wednesdays. However, the schedule has not been posted. Once the schedule is received, it will be posted. Cheerleaders will be expected to be present at all games, including playoff games. During basketball season, games are usually held on Wednesdays and Fridays. Occasionally, games may be held on other days of the week (especially during inclement weather when games must be rescheduled). Again, the schedule has not been posted. Once it is received, it will be posted. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS ABSENCES CAN BE THE DOWNFALL OF A GREAT CHEER TEAM! Absences can force the team to make last minute changes. This can be both stressful and detrimental. You will be expected to be at all games and practices. Club activities, extracurricular activities, etc. must not interfere with cheerleading. If you commit to cheerleading, you are committing to attend every game. Unexcused absences are those caused by anything other than illness or family emergencies. In addition, just because a cheerleader asks to be excused doesn t mean that the excuse will be granted. If you are ill or have a family emergency, the coach needs to be notified by a parent or guardian in order for the absence to be excused. Please notify the coach before the absence or as soon after as possible; only under extreme circumstances will prior notice not be expected. Please call Howard Middle School at (478) to notify the coach of any excused absences or the coach s mobile number. If the coach is unavailable, please leave a message. INJURIES/ PREEXISTING CONDITIONS a) Coaches must be made aware of all injuries occurring outside practice as soon as possible. 1. Please be sure that the coach is aware of any existing medical conditions/ allergies that may affect the cheer team member s participation in cheerleading. 2. If a minor injury occurs at an event (e.g., bruise, scrape) our athletic training staff will treat your child. You will be made aware of this injury as soon as possible. b) If a serious injury occurs at an event, parents/guardians will be contacted via phone immediately. At this time, we may have already contacted Emergency Medical Services. We will communicate all information regarding the injury to the parent and the parent may come meet us at the school/ injury location or meet us at the nearest medical facility, if necessary. SAFETY Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times. Cheer team members will receive written guidelines. A coach must be present to supervise during all stunting activities. Coaches must approve all new stunts. To protect the safety of our athletes, there is to be no talking, laughing, screaming, or playing during the building and execution of stunts. Cheer team members will be required to participate in warm up, conditioning, and weight training activities to maintain strength and flexibility and prevent injury. Page 7 of 20

8 GRADES Cheerleaders are student-athletes. Therefore, they are students first and athletes second. Progress/Grade reports will be turned in so the coach can monitor academic progress. Cheer team members who are failing a class will be required to attend tutoring; failure to attend tutoring will result in suspension or dismissal. Additionally, failing grades on a final grade report will lead to suspension or dismissal. EXPECTED BEHAVIOR All HMS guidelines must be followed at all times. Faculty/staff members reserve the right to report misbehavior, etc. to the coach, athletic director, and/or administrative team. Consequences will be issued for misbehavior or poor conduct. Cheerleaders must promote a positive image for the school community your peers, parents, teachers, and community members. While representing Howard Middle School, cheerleaders must not: Consume alcoholic beverages Use controlled substances Use tobacco products Show unsportsmanlike conduct Use profanity Show public displays of affection Part of a coach s job is to know where you are at all times during practices, games, and special events. Consequences will be issued for failure to follow the coach s direction or to stay in assigned areas during events. Cheerleaders cannot wear or loan HMS cheerleading uniforms/outfits when attending non-cheerleading activities. Cheerleaders must wear the designated Game Day uniform to school on the day of a game. All official cheerleading decisions and activities will be made by the coaching staff. All coaches and captains are to be shown respect and receive cooperation from cheerleaders and parents. Lack of respect will not be tolerated and can be grounds for dismissal. Coaches reserve the right to make changes/additions to the rules, as needed. 9 CHECKLIST FOR CANDIDATES The following documents must be submitted in each candidate s folder, except the teacher recommendation forms. Each teacher recommendation form must be given to the subject-area teacher. Be sure to turn provide the teachers enough time to complete them and have them turned in by March 15, Students are not to handle the recommendation forms after they have been completed by the teacher. This information will be verified by Coach Ryan Schomber, the athletic director. If it cannot be verified, a completed physical form will be required prior to tryouts. It is important that your paperwork is on time so the information can be verified. These activities will channel their enthusiasm and spirit in a constructive and beneficial manner. Additionally, it will provide a sense of pride and accomplishment in being a part of a distinguished group.
