1 M C S B R E A S T C A N - C E R A W A R E - N E S S F A C T S : Breast cancer is no laughing matter: About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will get invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. For women in the U.S., the death rates for breast cancer are higher than any other cancer besides lung cancer. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers. In 2011, there were more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. In men, about 1 in 10 breast cancers are believed to be caused by BRCA2 mutations, and even fewer cases to BRCA1 mutations. This October, we commemorate the life of Karen Junghans, a very dedicated former gym teacher that has touched the hearts of Briggs Chaney forever. Mrs. Junghans died of breast cancer on March 26 th, 2002, making this past March the ten year anniversary of her death. In this first edition of the Paw Press, we interviewed Karen Jugnhans co-workers about her and her time here at Briggs Chaney. Many people speak very highly of Karen Junghans, saying things like how dedicated she was and how much the students adored her. Mrs. By Camilla Barillas Tolley said [Karen Junghans] always made her students feel special. Oh, yeah, she was dedicated. When Karen Junghans was battling cancer, her kind coworkers decided to form a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure team. Most of you have seen the display case in the gymnasium (the Karen Junghans gymnasium). The colorful sneakers in that case were her trademark; she always wore shoes to match her outfit. Mrs. Tolley and the other gym teachers at the time would walk with her to N O V E M B E R 6 T H, show their support. They would also give her flowers and notes. When Mrs. Junghans was first diagnosed with Breast Cancer, this is what Mrs. Tolley said was the staff s initial reaction. Well, we were all very saddened by it and worried for her, she says, and we all came together and supported her. We were devastated. When asked what Mrs. Junghans best quality was, Mrs.Tolley replied, I would have to say her sense of humor. She had a great sense of humor.

2 P A G E 2 BEAR SPORTS! By: Racel Klumpp S O F T B A L L The boys softball team had a GREAT season. They started off the season with a win 11-8! Overall, the boys have won two games and lost three. The team received great motivation from their team captain, Canyon Hunt, and their head coach, Mr. Sheldon. Mr. Sheldon helped the boys a lot. He was the coach to run such a great season. Mathew King said, I feel like Mr. Sheldon is a great coach. He always tells you things that could make you a better player on the field. When you struggle with something he always gives you pointers on how to fix them. The team wouldn t have been great without an amazing coach like Mr. Sheldon. I would give Mr. Sheldon a 100-out of 10! said Eric Aaron. The boys couldn t have done so great if they didn t work together. The boys had great team work and a great season together. Mr. Sheldon said, I wish more boys would have come to tryouts at the start of the season. So, keep that in mind next year boys. The softball team is a fun way to come together and have fun. 3 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 3 The girls softball team had a FAN- TASTIC run. The girls started off their season with a win also. Briggs Chaney girls crushed Banneker 15-1! The girls won overall three games and lost two. Girls Softball saying nice job with the other team after a great win! The girls have really come together to teach and learn from each other. The team doesn t have one team captain; every week there is a different captain showing that all the girls are leaders. The girls could not have become such a great team without Ms. Kenealy s leadership, support, and great coaching. Anna Gruber said, Ms. Kenealy knows how to run a great, fun practice. She knows how to help everyone. Sierra Campbell said: [She] is a great coach. She helps us practice and she prepares us for our next game. The girls and Ms. Kenealy work to together and support each other, which makes them a great team. Ms. Kenealy said, I would love for the season to be longer. I have really enjoyed working with the girls and getting to know them on a differ-

4 P A G E 4 So Ed on guys! Here s the deal: I know that a LOT of people loved Outdoor Ed. We could have Outdoor Ed not only in 6 th grade, but also in 7 th and 8 th grade. So, I m taking a poll. Sign the petition that your classroom teachers will hand to you. This is a grand chance to show your enthusiasm and to have Outdoor Ed in 7 th and 8 th grade! T H E P A W P R E S S

5 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 5 We have some pretty fast runners this year. They started off the season great with boys and girls in 1 st -3 rd place, respectively. The cross country team won two races and lost one. Yassim Kass even past a Banneker boy in the end! The cross country runners are dedicated by going to practice every day and pushing themselves through challenges. The top three boy runners are Chris Pamah, Tyler Plunkett and Irvin Pamah. The top three girls are Yasmine Kass, Govina Etwavoo, and Aulura Saunders. The team works hard. They think a lot about how they run. Ms. Jennifer said, I hear them talking to each other after runs about how they can improve. They have made my first year of coaching a great experience. C R O S S The cross country team couldn t have done so great this season without such a great coach that has supported them and made them a better team every day. I think Ms. Jennifer has good communication and she is very supportive. Ms. Jennifer isn t afraid to push us and she is a very good coach, said Tyler Plunkett. Ms. Jennifer works with the team every practice to become better runners. Yassim Kass said, I love it!!!! Ms. Jennifer makes cross country fun and the team has a great time running! GO BEARS!!!! When the teacher says to take a seat, you answer take it where? 2. When she calls roll, you answer yo mama. 3. Tell your teacher you ll turn in your homework as soon as your parents finish doing it. 4. Fold your homework into a paper airplane and fly it to the teacher s desk. Extra points if it hits the teacher s head. 5. Do drum rolls with your pencil. Use the head of the person in front of you as the cymbals. 6. Use crayon for important assignments. Use white crayon. 7. Lean your chair back so that it is balancing on only two legs. Extra points if you fall over backward. Bonus, if the teacher laughs. 8. Ask if you can be excused to go to the bathroom, then take a tour around the school. 9. When the teacher asks a question, wave your hand like a palm tree in a hurricane and say, pick me, pick me! When the teacher finally calls on you, say never mind. 10. When the teacher says Pay attention please, reply how much should I pay? 11. Right after the teacher gives directions say huh. 12. Fall out of your chair and pretend to faint. Repeat 3 more times: D 13. Wear glasses with eyes painted on them and fall asleep. 14. Raise your hand. When called on, say you re stretching. 15. Do not answer any questions at all, for "religious reasons." 16. Answer every question with a question, and reply to every statement with, "Why?" 17. Say to the teacher, "Excuse me, but I don't get ANY of this. If you could just start over from the beginning-say, September. 18. Send your teachers a list of "Ways to Annoy Your Teachers" in an envelope labeled "Blackmail." 19. Sit at the front of the class and color in your textbook! 20.
