The case, was heard last Monday and concerns a proposal ntroduced n Student Senate Nov. 5 dealng wth male custodans n women's resdence halls. "The case you are dealng wth s whether or not Student Senate has the rght to pass recommendatons concernng resdence halls," sad Greg Ryan, presdent of Men's nterdorm. " don't see how they (nterdorm) can tell us what we can and can't deal wth," sad Mke Duggns, presdent of Student Assocaton (SA) and Senate's representatve n the case. " don't thnk (Student) Court has any busness dealng wth t (the case)," sad Duggns. Duggns added t was good to see who should deal wth what, but added that the case could take away much of Senate's powers f t was ruled n favor of nterdorm. Duggns cted such commttees as the Open House and 24 Hour Commttees as examples of Senate work n resdence hall related areas whch could suffer. "f they (Senate) take up all the polces n dorms then nterdorm has no functon," sad Ryan. The proposal ntroduced n Senate called for male custodans to be replaced by female custodans when jobs open for males n men's dorms. Equalty of the sexes elmnates Pep Band from basketball games By BARBARA GAFFEY Staff Wrter f the upcomng basketball games don't seem the same, t may be because they're not. Accordng to Robert Hartwell, band drector, the call for equalty between men and women has resulted n the elmnaton of the Pep Band. Hartwell sad, "There has been a decded effort to gve equal tme to both boys and grls sports." Ths "decded effort" has made the possblty of a Pep Band for both men's and women's Petty theft plagues dorm resdents as major problem durng fall semester BY WAYNE BOBUTT Staff Wrter t was just a usual stroll down the hall to the bathroom, so she ddn't see the need to lock her door after she shut t. But Lucy Jenkns (not her real name) wshed she had taken those few extra seconds to lock the door. She returned and, after seeng a grl n the hall she had never seen before, Lucy dscovered her wallet, watch and key stolen out of her room. Petty theft n dormtores s a major problem for whch students must share the blame, accordng to a survey of resdent hall drectors conducted to determne dffcultes plagung the halls ths semester. Drectors of the 0 dortns where petty theft s a sgnfcant problem all sad many of ther resdents faled to lock ther doors, especally f they were only gong down the hall to the bathroom or next door to chat wth a neghbor. However, the dorm resdent would realze hs mstake when returnng to the room and fndng somethng, usually money, mssng. Mlle Zachem, Combs Hall drector, sad bllfolds, always mnus money and usually other tems also, are occasonally found n trash cans. Martn Hall Drector Nancy Ward sad some thefts may even occur when a resdent s nsde a room asleep, but the door s left unlocked. At least two dorm drectors sad ther resdents beleved off-campus people were the dormtory theves. John Gboslby, assstant drector for nvestgaton and crme preventon, sad juvenles n the dormtores s a farly common occurrence. He sad students could help lessen the theft problem f they would report to Securty or dorm drectors any people who students thought had no busness beng n a dormtory. Most dorm drectors sad cty people vsted ther dorms durng the day, but they had no way of knowng f these were the theves or not. Some drectors mentoned that offcampus resdents would have a hard tme robbng ther dorms at nght, as the sde doors are locked and ngra hostesses checked D cards. Two resdent hall drectors mentoned that people who were not resdents of ther partcular dorms had verbally abused the nght hostesses when the women asked them to leave after curfew. Dorm drectors who sad petty theft was not a major problem n ther halls dd admt theft probably occurred, but t was never reported. Unsantary condtons n dorm bathrooms also ranked as a major dormtory problem. Comments from dorm drectors ranged from "We have no problems" to " prefer not to comment about t." One women's drector sad of her <tee PETTY, page 2) basketball games mpossble. Ths year, women's basketball games wll be played before the men's games on the same nght. Ths would mean that the PeD Band would perform for approxmately four hours. Accordng to women's basketball coach Shrley Duncan, "We talked t over as a team and we were very understandng of the stuaton of the band." Duncan sad, however, that she felt the band should perform for the women's games f they contnued to perform at the men's. The women's basketball team proposed the band play for the second half of ther game and the frst half of the men's game, sad Duncan. Accordng to Combs, ths proposal was not feasble because the band would be comng nto the colseum n the mddle of a game and leavng n the mddle of a game. Presdent J.C. Powell sad there were three possble alternatves to the problem. One was to have a pep band for both games. Another, he sad, was to play for half of each game. The thrd alternatve was to go to another source for muscal entertanment. Ths was the decded best alternatve, sad Powell. As a result of ths decson the Unversty has hred an organst that wll play for both games. Powell added, "We wll try ths and f we fnd t s detrmental we wll look at t agan." The approxmately 20 band members who play at the basketball games are offered supplemental scholarshps, accordng to Doug Whtlock, executve assstant to the presdent. He sad, "There have been 20 to 2 nomnal scholarshps that provde a slght reducton n fees." Of course, sad Whtlock, "wth no Pep Band you can't gve Pep Band Scholarshps." (see PEP, page 2) Accordng to Pam McCauley, presdent of Women's nterdorm, ther organzaton had already taken acton on the problem when Senate made ts proposal. "Several people had come to me concernng the problem," sad Duggns, explanng why he wrote the proposal. The problem of who represents the students lvng n dorms s the basc queston n the case, accordng to both partes. "When a student has a problem they usually come to us (the Senate)," Duggns sad. "We are the only body on campus that represents every student," Duggns sad. There are some dorms not represented n Senate, accordng to Ryan. n the orgnal charges, three ponts were covered: volaton of Senate's authorty as stated n the Student Assocaton Consttuton; volaton of Senate's authorty as prescrbed by the Unversty admnstraton; and volaton of the authorty of other recognzed student government bodes. The frst two charges were dropped. " ddn't want to make t any more damagng to the Senate," Ryan sad Dr. Thomas Myers, vce presdent of Student Affars, sad t s Duggn'a Job as presdent of the SA to refer proposals to the approprate body when ntroduced n Senate. Duggns has dropped the proposal and has referred t to Women's nterdorm. The court recessed after hearng the case and wll render a verdct next Monday. Both partes sad there may be an appeal f the case s ruled aganst them. Senate passes evaluatons proposal By MARK TURNER News Edtor A proposal for a faculty and course evaluaton polcy was passed by the Student Senate Tuesday nght at ther regular meetng. Accordng to the proposal, the evaluatons would be mandatory for non-tenure faculty members and recommended for tenure faculty members. The results of the evaluatons would then be used as an ad n makng promoton and pay rase decsons. The evaluaton would be standardzed throughout the Unversty wth space avalable for each nstructor to develop hs own questons. The evaluatons would be admnstered by graduate assstants or approved students. The evaluatons would be made avalable to the college deans, department charmen, the faculty member nvolved and members of the Commttee on Tenure and Promoton. A recommended evaluaton was also ncluded n the proposal. The recommended evaluaton was developed by the Unversty of llnos and revsed by the Academc Affars Commttee. Much of the justfcaton for the evaluaton polcy s based on work done by the Assocated Students of Arzona State Unversty who researched the Unversty of llnos Course Evaluaton Questonnare. perscope Career opportuntes are an mportant result of a college educaton, but gettng a job s not always easy. Staff wrter Barb Gaffey reports on page 3 how the Placement Dvson can help students get started n jonng the ranks of the employed. Two amendments to the Student Assocaton (SA) Consttuton were also ntroduced and dscussed. Both amendments were drawn up and ntroduced by the Electons Commttee. The frst amendment would change the general electons for senators from the fall semester to the sprng semester. The amendment would also change (see SENATE, page t) edtorals. entertanment.. port!,m organzatons arts.. Dscplne and determnaton pay off for Susan Schaefer n the long run ByJOHNSCHUTTE Staff Wrter Sue Schaefer must have beleved the age old maxm that says the road to success s a long and wndng one, full of mountans to be clmbed and ptfalls to be crossed. For Schaefer, the allegorcal road takes on a very real sgnfcance n the hlls and gulles of cross country courses around the naton as she methodcally runs herself nto poston as the premer runner on the women's cross country team. Schaefer recently fnshed ffth wth a tme of 7:37 n the 5,000 meter run at the natonal cross-county meet n Georgetown, Tex. Her ffth place fnsh enabled her to be named an Al- Amercan by the Assocaton of ntercollegate Athletcs for Women (AAW land helped Eastern place sxth n the over-all competton. The slender blonde from Buffalo, N.Y., who s already challengng some of the top-ranked women n the naton, began runnng compettvely just three and a half years ago wth the help of some frends. " was knd of persuaded to go out, ddn't really want to," she sad. But the more she ran the more she lked t and before long runnng had become a very mportant part of her lfe. "When you're younger, meets are for fun and you can goof around a lttle. competed n lttle summer meets but never was really serous about t untl my junor year n hgh school," she sad. Although Schaefer decded at ths tme that runnng n college competton was "a must," t was a combnaton of crcumstances that brought her to the Unversty. Schaefer, a law enforcement major,. sad - she frst heard about the Unversty because of ts academc program., After talkng to people at several other schools, ncludng Perm State and owa State, she decded that the best place to contnue her educaton and runnng would be here. " had a scholarshp offer here," Schaefer sad, somethng whch the other unverstes taled to present, "and owa State ddn't have a law enforcement program." Schaefer, whose soft voce breaks nto a modest gggle when asked to menton some of her past accomplshments, s famlar wth the exctement of natonal competton. Last June, n the AAU natonals held at UCLA, Schaefer won the 3,000 meter event n her frst competton on the natonal level. Even so, Schaefer sad she feels that she could be runnng a lot better. " won't say how dd," she ex> planed, "but dd terrble," referrng to her performance n an AAU cross country meet last November. Although she has had her ups and downs n AAU competton Schaefer s eager to contnue what she refers to as her bobby." " was lookng for a club to Jon," she sad, snce the Unversty can not fnance an athlete's trp to AAU meets. " was able to get on a team n Tennessee," she sad, where " have to pay for meals but they pay ar fare and motel blls." "For cross country you have to get n a lot of mles. t's not a three month season, you have to run all year round," she sad. Susan Schaefer Schaefer explaned that she lkes to complement her mleage "wth nterval tranng, lke runnng repeats," whch she sad amounts to a two or three mle warm-up, fve mnutes rest, another "hard mle", fve mnutes rest and so n addton, Schaefer sad she usually runs three or four mles every mornng "Just to complement the ntervals wth some extra mleage." Sandy Martn, women's cross country coach, credts Schaefer's unque dscplne and determnaton as the key to her success. "Susan s probably one of the most dscplned runners we've had," Martn "You're not born wth talent as a long dstance runner, t's a talent that you've got to cultvate yourself. "Susan s runnng consstently 3040 seconds faster than the rest of our runners," a fact that Martn admts s "a lttle scary snce they are all good." Schaefer, who n her reserved manner sad that "Just to be able to go to Texas s somethng else," feels that the most mportant ngredent n wnnng s teamwork. "There are no superstars n cross country because everyone s a superstar," she sad. "That's what's good about t."

Crculaton Manager edtorals Wnter's scare tactcs may have effect, but short-range plans won solve energy crss The frst snowstorm of the year ht last weekend and once agan energy-ts avalablty and cost-s the topc of general conversaton. Suddenly, beng warm and free to speed everywhere n a car seem very mportant to everyone. Those who had prevously preferred to gnore the naton's "energy crss" are aow runnng scared at the prospec. of another long, cold wnter. Unfortunately, the effects of nature's scare tactcs are usually short-lastng. Most of us, after survvng such mmedate crses as last wnter's energy overload, smply st back, turn up the heat and forget the threat of fuel shortages that are always present now. Ths atttude of takng acton only when faced wth a "do or de" stuaton got the country nto the problem of ncreasng energy demands and decreasng supples. Obvously, emergency cutbacks and short-term polces are not gong to work. People smply are not wllng to turn ther thermostats down, nsulate ther homes better, keep ther speed at 55 mph, or purchase smaller cars voluntarly. A long-range comprehensve energy program for the whole naton s the most sensble step toward a soluton to ths crss. Presdent Carter, who has called energy hs "No. prorty", s now fghtng to get the Admnstraton's energy plan through Congress ntact. t has been an uphll battle for the quckly conceved, overly ambtous proposal. Although the House voted to accept most of Carter's plan, the Senate has balked at some of the measures. At ths tme, after seven months n Congress, the program s n the hands of a jont congressonal conference commttee whch wll attempt some form of compromse. Carter and the Admnstraton hope the plan wll be able to cut the growth of to total energy consumpton to two percent a year, gas consumpton below current levels, and the mportaton of ol. The Carter energy plan n some revsed form or another wll probably be phased nto Amercan lfe n the near (f Congress gets movng) future. Here are the basc elements of the program whch wll affect every person every day of the year: -a "wellhead tax" amed at cuttng down on domestc ol producton whch would rase crude ol prces and encourage Amercans to use less of t; -natural gas prce controls whch would keep government n control of the cost to users (the House agreed to ths dea, but the Senate has voted for' deregulaton); a tax crackng down on cars whch get fewer than 27.5 mpg by 985; -hgher taxes for companes whch do not change from ol and natural gas heatng to coal n the next few years; -a reform n methods of prcng of utltes to encourage more sparng ouse of energy. Ths, then, s a boled-down verson of what Presdent Carter s askng for. t calls for a lot of tax changes and provdes lttle gudance for the selecton of alternatve energy sources, but t s a plan. t's most mportant aspect s that now s the tme to get started and get the naton nvolved n such a comprehensve program whle there s stll some tme. '.''.- /commenterry "N The logc behnd mandatory attendance polces has always escaped me. suppose the major purpose of the nevtable roll call s to check on those errant souls who take upon themselves the lberty of skppng class. Then when the last push and shove of grade tme rolls around (and that tme s loomng ever closer, gang) the absentee talles can be used as ether punshment or reward n decdng borderlne grades. Asde from conflctng wth the basc concept of freedom of choce, the practce stands n opposton to the true essence of hgher learnng. At ths pont n the educatonal process, students should be n class because they want to be, not because they have to be...because they are motvated by what they are gong to learn n that hour, and not least mportantly, because that's what they pad ther tuton for. nstead, requred attendance polces reflect another pcture one where reluctant students must be goaded to ther desks to learn. f teachers resort to attendance polces to get students to class, there s a serous lack somewhere, and not all of t rests wth the students. Granted, learnng s a two-way relatonshp, wth responsblty necessary at both ends of the process. But n 'the last analyss, t s the teacher who s ultmately responsble for what takes place n the classroom. So when students mss class, barrng sckness and other r terry taylon legtmate reasons, t ndcates a lack of motvaton, a feelng that the hour n class wll just be wasted tme. Maybe attendance polces should be nterpreted n a dfferent lght, as a reflecton of teachng ablty rather than student shortcomngs. f a teacher's roll book shows consstently low attendance, for example, then perhaps t should be the teacher who s penalzed rather than the student. What would happen f even ther jobs depended more on the voluntary attendance of ther students? No doubt consderably more energy would be drected to makng the classroom as nterestng and stmulatng as possble, and ncreased student nterest would reduce the role of mandatory attendance polces to very lttle consequence at all. Well, gang, buckle your boots and pull out your parkas, because wnter s here there's just no gettng around t any longer. Slck steps, undgnfed slps and sprawls are to be antcpated wth the rest of frgd weather's nconvenences. Numb fngers, stalled cars and runny noses all are n store n the months ahead. 4 Self-analyss study: the frst step toward a successful ntervew BY BARBARA GAFFEY Staff Wrter Tests, fnals week and campus ntervews are three occasons that often cause sleepless nghts and shaky knees among college students. The Dvson of Career Development and Placement s offerng a soluton to one of these uneasy occasons. Accordng to Kurt Zmmerman, Assocate Drector of the dvson, preparaton for a campus ntervew can relve some of the pre-ntervew Jtters. One of Zmmerman's goals for the future development of the Dvson of Career Development and Placement s an ncrease n the number of employers who come to the campus to conduct ntervews. However, Zmmerman sad, the student must be prepared 00 per cent for these ntervews. Self-analyss s the frst necessary step n campus ntervew preparaton. The student, he sad, should take a serous look at hmself consderng "hs assests, as well as bs labltes." Accordng to Zmmerman, the student should answer such questons as, "What are my job objectves? Where do want to work? What are my assets?" The employer expects the potental employee to know hmself and what he wants, Zmmerman sad. Not only should he know hmself, but he should also know the job opportuntes n hs feld and the opportuntes n the company for whch he s ntervewng, added Zmmerman. He s currently developng plans for a career resource lbrary that wll assst the students n obtanng ths nformaton. The dvson announces campus ntervew tmes n the FY. Accordng to Zmmerman, the student should sgn-up for the ntervew as soon as t s announced to allow the student tme to get hs credental fle ready and to research the company. The campus ntervew wll usually be followed by a letter of rejecton or a letter requestng a second ntervew. The second ntervew, Zmmerman sad, "s usually conducted on locaton at the company's offce. Accordng to Whtlock, the proposed change would allow the mal to be delvered to campus offces by campus employees rather than faculty and staff members. Whtlock sad that he dd not foresee any addtonal costs to the Unversty through the mplementaton of the new system. "'m confdent that the net result would be cost effectve," he sad, because faculty members are currently devotng tme out of ther work day to pck up mal "durng whch they could not be workng on academc materal." Whtlock sad* a lack of parkng spaces near the Coates buldng and the nconvenence caused by bad weather and frequent delvery of bulky parcels were two major factors n the decson. The only offces not accepted by the propsed change would be those located n the Coates or Jones buldngs, Whtlock sad. Student mal servce would not be affected "snce student mal s delvered drectly from the post offce already," he added. Under the new system, all offcal busness mal would contnue to be delvered by the Rchmond Post Offce to the Coates mal room, where t would be sorted nd sent to the ndvdual colleges and departments. Today, they scramble through baskets of dngy clothes, sort out the colors, whtes and delcates and they've become the best of frends. Snce a year ago last May, Mary Dalton and Nancy Randolph have provded students wth a personalzed, convenent laundry servce on 3rd Street, called Speed Wash. "We do busness wth local people too, but a large percentage of our customers are students," agreed the teammates. they started wth Speed Wash. "We don't charge customers above what we pay to have clothes dry cleaned," assured Nancy. "We do the beat we can around here," sad Mary, a natve of Rchmond and mother of two daughters, age 8 and 3. "We try to come up wth reasonable prces, and we try to be as helpful as we can." "f students prefer to do ther own wash and need advce, we go to them and show them how to do t rght," sad Nancy. Mary, who's been n the laundry busness for nearly 20 years, clams masterng effcent cleanng sklls s not an openng a busness; you never know how the publc's gong to be. We've really enjoyed the students, though. We've loved gettng to know some of these kds. "We've never had any trouble wth students, not even a sngle bad check," contnued Nancy. Nancy s a drty blonde orgnally from Casey County, (that's down below Danvlle, she clarfed), and the mother of 2 grls, S and 3, and an eght-year-old son. Nancy, a staunch woman wth a quck sense of humor, "tells students what to do" and they take her word for t. The women fnd most customers to be helpful and unusually consderate. One regular recpent-student, who snce last year has learned to do hs own laundry adequately, usually "goes out we'll get t done for them. The two comrades are qute "proud" of the new washers and dryers nstalled last week. "We went n debt a lttle," they sad. Besdes that, Mary and Nancy, through experence, (an average of loads a day), know what colors and fabrcs can be washed together, at certan temperatures, and whether bleach s needed. They had an unfortunate, but humorous story to tell. One grl came n, washed a load of Jeans together and added bleach. "Every par was streaked," remembered Nancy. "t was a mess. Although hs collecton ncludes horror moves and some of the frst cartoons, the largest proporton of hs flms s westerns. The westerns are the classc "B" moves, whch were low-budget entertanment loaded wth fastpacked acton. Ther theme was usually good versus evl and naturally the good was always trumphant. They were loaded wth morals that probably nfluenced an entre generaton. Every Frday nght. Harrson shows part of ha collecton free at the Penny Pncher restaurant. One of the flms ncluded s "n Old Sante Fe" (934) whch starred Ken Maynard, a natve Kentuckan and gave Gene Autry hs frst start. At that tme, Maynard was the hghest pad star n Hollywood, accordng to Harrson, and earned $,000 a week durng the depresson. Maynard made 86 moves wth sound and 6 slent moves. No, not the Nwd of Socal Securty t has all just been taken away from them. t wll be a man new to HEW, brought u by Chef Joe Calfano to head uo what Sen. Talmadge (D. Georga) calls the "newest HEW bureaucratc boondoggle." That k an entrely new HEW empre called the Health Care Fnancng Admnstraton. Robert Derzon. one of those cork-laj bureaucratc dsasters who bobs from falure to catastrophe, rsng hgher n prestge and power wth wach debacle, s the new head. Hsrecord? After degrees n busness and hosptal admnstraton, he taught preventve medcne at New York Unversty. (Oh t s so nostalgc to be old! remember way back when professors of medcne had been to medcal school!) We nest fnd ths Derzon as a commssoner (under John Lndsay, of course) for New York Cty's Health and Hosptal Corporaton. The New Ysrk Tmes wrote of Us regme "were the Health and Hosptal Corporaton a prvate corporaton... t would be bankrupt" That was n the early 970's. am nformed that for some years Uus most socalzed of all muncpal hosptal systems has been closng an average of 0 per cent of ts beds per year. Lncoln hosptal has closed. Morrsana (ts hard to beleve). Harlem s gone or gong. Boy, they don't just close down a wng, they smash a whole neghborhood hosptal! Ths Joseph Calfano runs HEW, whch s bgger by far n budget than our entre defense department He learned hs job under LB. Johnson, the well-known pacfst and humantaran. He also made over half a mllon bucks as a Washngton lawyer the year Jmmy Carter announced that no Washngton nsders would show up n hs power structure. So boss Joe asks hs new bead medcal boncho for ways to combat medcal nflaton. Derzon's memo s an nstant classc an example of the nhumanty of medcal bureaucracy. t's n two smple parts. The frst part addresses tself toenthanasa. The second addresses tself to abortng the poor.» Ths, let me emphasze, n a memo focused on cost control. Here's the way t goes. Secton () one-ffth of medcare money goes to people n ther last year of lfe, and f those people ded a year earler t would save medcare a bllon dollars the frst year alone. How to do t? Smple. Requre every state to authorze "lvng wlls" under whch old folks permt ther doctors to turn off lfe support systems. Any state that refuses loses all ts federal money. That's easy, sn't t? Pop-pop. Snce the Feds have aloeady started puttng lmts on hosptal stays based on dsease by name, rather than severty of llness, t would be no step at all to put comparably sweepng lmts on the use of lfe support systems. Okay-now secton two. t has been known for years that n the poverty group, "every unwanted brth prevented saves $000 annually n welfare and another $00 n medcad funds". Smple! Subsdze federal abortons for all poor women. Remember, that $,00 annually s multpled n each case by a lfetme. Thnk of the cumulatve loss now and the savngs n Just fve years!. Snce the memo leaked, Joe and Bob pont out that all ths s not polcy. The New York Tmes (no frend of medcne) rebuts that t s not polcy yet, but t s the thnkng of two top men n the feld. 'm for self-determnaton of both termnal llness, and a womans personal reproducton, but t sckens me to see t federalzed and "cost out" for purely $ reasons. 10 Erne brngs down the House BY GENE McLEAN Sparta Edtor Led by the passng of senor parterback Erne House and lanker Jm Nelson, the Colonels ended the 977 regular season wth a convncng 42-3 romp over conference rval Morehead. House, who was named Oho Valley Conference Offensve Player of the Week for hs performance aganst the Eagles, rddled the Morehead lecondary for 67 yards on completons n 22 attempts n rdtte to breakng two school records. The S'U' 90-pound sgnal caller from London, who was named Co-Most Valuable Player n the OVC a year ago, fnshed hs ffth year at the Unversty (he was redshrted hs freshman year) breakng hs own total offense record set last year and the most yards passng record of Jm Guce set n 967. For the season House fnshed wth,740 yards of total offense breakng the old mark of,685 and,547 yards passng bestng Guce's,56. " wasn't aware of Erne's records untl late n the game and we probably let hm stay n for one seres longer than we would have otherwse so he could get the records," head coach Roy Kdd sad. House's record-breakng performance was aded greatly by the sure hands of Nelson who combned wth the quarterback for receptons, 72 yards and two touchdowns and a mserable day for Morehead defensve back Henry' Sykes who was vctmzed on several occasons. Although Nelson s known more for catchng the football, evdenced by hs league leadng 40 receptons, he pulled a page out of House's book, throwng a 30-yard touchdown strke to reserve tght-end Curt Coakley on a flea-flcker play at the begnnng of the second half. " thnk Jm Nelson s one of the best athletes n our conference," Morehead head football coach Wayne Chapman sad. " defntely thnk he has a chance at pro football as a wde recever; he just played super out there today." However, the laugher for Eastern was due more to the play of senor lnebacker Lnear, Lovett whose frst half ntercepton and fumble recovery lead drectly to two Colonel scores and helped buld what would soon proved to be an nsurmountable 2-0 lead at ntermsson. Lovett, who ganed second team All-OVC honors for hs play at lnebacker ths fall, was also on the ball n the second half and n more ways than one. The senor from Cncnnat added another ntercepton and fumble recovery after ntermsson to ad the Colonels n ther season fnale. "Lnear played an outstandng game aganst Morehead. t mght behubest ever. f he's played a better one, can't remember t," Kdd sad. "All of our senors played extremely good," Kdd contnued. "They were determned to show people they were really better than ther record showed and they added the spark to the rest of the team." The Colonels who were mpressve n unloadng ther season-long frustratons on the Eagles, on the other hand broke another record on the worn and wet Jayne Stadum turf accumulatng 55 yards n penaltes on 5 nfractons. "That's just a total lack of concentraton on our part," Kdd sad, "although serously queston some of the pass nterference calls aganst us." After the Colonels racked up records, both good and bad, at the Eagles' expense Chapman sad, "they all played lke pros today and you just saw the fnal result." ntramural hghlghts Racquetball has come to an end wth vctors n both the fraternty dvson and the ndependent dvson. Davd Thomas of Sgma Nu defeated Steve McVay of Lamda Ch Alpha 2-4 and 2-2. Hector Dodonet had more trouble n wnnng the ndependent dvson. Fred Schuler gave Dodonet all he wanted before yeldng 2-8, 6-2, and 2-9. Other Colonel fnshers, and ther places, were Dan Matousch, 45; Gary Noel, 69; BU Morgan, 7; and Mark Yelln, 82. Mark Helgeson and Denns Creekmore rounded out the Colonels' top seven. 12 The Eastern Progress, Thursday, December,77 Page Courses n the fne arts provde students wth fun and nsght As you are probably well aware, pre-regstraton starts Monday and regstraton s rght around the corner. Perhaps you've been thnkng about takng a musc, theatre arts or art course to fulfll a humantes electve or just for your own pleasure. f so, you're n luck because 've decded to play advsor ths week and let you n on some nsde nformaton on what courses you mght be nterested n. Many courses n the arts dffer from your usual lecturetype courses. The reason for ths s because students are requred to actvely partcpate n many course actvtes. For example, most theatre arts courses can be taken by non-majors and nvolve actve partcpaton n the fundamentals of theatre. THE 00 s called Forms and Phlosophy -of Theatre and s a three hour course whch examnes elements of theatre practce. t ncludes analyss of plays and attendance at certan dramatc productons. THE 0 s Fundamentals of Stagecraft and gets nto the techncal aspects of set desgn and constructon. Wth both these courses, students are ether allowed to or requred to help work behnd the scenes of Unversty dramatc productons. Several of my frends assocated wth theatre arts have told me THE 25, Theatrcal Make-up, s a "fun course" whch anyone could enjoy. You'll learn the technques of make-up applcaton and can also put them to good use workng n actual productons. f you see yourself as an the arts asprng, amateur actor consder THE 23, Fundamentals of Actng. You'll learn the fner ponts of voce, characterzaton and pantomne. As always, audtons for all major Unversty dramatc productons are open to any member of the Unversty communty. The drama and theatre hstory courses, THE 39 and THE 395 would probably be a lttle tougher and requre some studyng, just from the very nature of ther subject matter. Nether requres a prerequste. Perhaps your nterests are more muscal n nature. There 4 A great waste of talent 9 are three courses desgned specfcally for non-majors and several others you can take f you possess certan talents. MUS 27, whch s called The Enjoyment of Musc s desgned to gve general college students a background n musc. Emphass s on the bascs and on lstenng to major works by famous composers. tna schoewe 've taken ths course so know from experence t s good for people wth lmted muscal backgrounds. Attendance s requred at a certan number of campus muscal events. Dr. Bruce Hoagland, assocate professor of musc, teaches MUS 272, Musc Lterature. He sad ts man objectve s "for students to become famlar wth large numbers of compostons." The prmary focus wll be on lstenng and between 50 and 75 major compostons wll be studed. "A non-major could easly take ths course for t requres no theory or musc background. The only thng a student would have to have s an nterest n' a bg varety of classcal musc. thnk non-majors could beneft from t, "he sad. A relatvely new course s MUS 273, Survey of Amercan Popular Musc. t's taught by Joe Hambrck, assstant professor of musc. Sometme ago be told me the course would bascally center around the hstory of popular musc, ncludng jazz. There wll be a good deal of lstenng and ths s a great course for students nterested n studyng and lstenng to musc, but who aren't really nterested n the serous classcs. f you've got talents on an nstrument or you can sng, check nto many of the nstrumental and vocal ensembles open to all students. All you really have to possess s a certan level of profcency on an nstrument and the desre to jon. The Concert Band, Women's Chorale and Men's Chorus are specfcally ntended for students wth less muscal experence. f you feel you have the abltes, don't be afrad to try to partcpate n these groups. f you have an nterest and any questons, by all means CSN help run a legend wth latest album BY LARRY BERNARD Staff Wrter ' Crosby, Stlls and Nash have just helped run a legend wth ther latest album "CSN." The so-called kngs of mellow rock have been talkng about gettng together and makng ths album for the past few years, but the reunon was doomed rght from the start. Better they should have stayed home and remnsced about old tmes. So bland are the offerngs presented that after lstenng to ths record one gets the mpresson CSN reunted only for the cash. t's lke a marrage reconcled only for the sake of a chld. Ths entre album s a great waste of all three men's talents. Remember "Sute: Judy Blue Eyes" or "Teach Your Chldren?" CSN were at ther peak when they were wrtng and sngng songs such as these. On ths album songs almost as brllant as those ap- pear to be there, but they're bured under a thck coatng of sckenng sweetness. The nstrumentaton s so weak here t's embarrassng. The pano accompanment on "Shadow Captan" s so amateursh t comes off much lke a kd's frst pano lesson. CSN used to excel so greatly on vocals. The vocals here are so threadbare and thn that they seem to flutter quetly away before leavng a lastng effect. Only on "See the Changes" do the lyrcs manage to break out from under the muck. t contans some beautful and hauntng words: "Ten years sngng rght out loud never looked, was anybody lstenng Then fell out of a cloud Ht the ground and notced somethng mssng." Davd Crosby weeps, snffs, moans and cres hs way through a soppy lttle ballad called "n My Dreams." The lstener s left thnkng, "Surely they don't get pad for wrtng songs such as that." Some of the songs seem to carry the old trademark of CSN but age and the long separaton seem to be creepng up on them. The songs here are mnus the energy that was once so evdent. Stephen Stlls lays t on the lne n "Dark Star" when he sngs: "An't ths song a bust- don't care, dark star." Rght on, Steve, but honesty won't make the song or the album any better. Crosby, Stlls and Nash should have left us wth pleasant memores nstead of reuntng. As the case s here, reunons are usually ll-tmed and ll-fated. Stll, CSN mght have made t succeed f they had worked strctly wth ther talent nstead of addng doses of sugar and spces. The lstener suffers when he Junor flutst Sandra Howard wll represent Kentucky n regonal musc competton to be held n Lousvlle A Unversty musc student, Sandra Howard, flutst from Columbus, Oho, wll represent Kentucky n southern regonal competton sponsored by the Musc Teachers Natonal Assocaton. Ht hands wore turquose and slver and n front of hm was the turquose, coral, onyx and mother-of-pearl Jewelry he had (or sale. He ddn't look lke a salesman really. And he ddn't make any bg sales ptches at the students who stopped to browse. Hs prces seemed reasonable and when he sad he ddn't sell Jewelry to make money, he sounded for real. " don't make much on the Jewelry sell because don't have to. have another Job and Just do ths on the sde," he sad. Julan works constructon and operates heavy equpment n Angola, nd., "a quet, coxy, lttle town." When t rans he can't work there, so he heads for eastern Kentucky to sell hs Jewelry. Julan sad hs prces are so reasonable, n fact, they have almost gotten hm nto trouble. "'ve been run out of Chattanooga," he sad, becausethe dealers ddn't lke t. He was set up at a flea market and Senate passes proposal (CMtaued from page ) the sprng semester vacancy electons to the fall semeatar. Ths would allow the Senate to get rght to work n the fall semester when classes resumed so more work could be done durng ths tme, accordng to Senator EUlsa Perry, member of the Electons Commttee. Ths amendment would also change electon days n the general and presdental electons from Thursday to Tuesday and Wednesday. Ths would stmulate a larger voter turnout, accordng to Perry. The other amendment would allow for undecded students to run and vote for Senate seats n ths area. t would also allow for those students n graduate school, Rchmond Communty College and contnung educaton to be broken down nto ther respectve majors and classfed under one of the exstng colleges. Ths would end all confuson as to where people can run and vote, accordng to Senator Mke Dtchen, charperson of the Electons Commttee. Both amendments wll be voted on next week at the regular Senate meetng n order to be presented at the January meetng of the Board of Regents. some local Jewelry dealers came to hm and asked, "How long you gong to be here?" " thought 'd leave Sunday," Julan sad. The dealers sad "That's good. You're sellng t too cheap." The dealers have a 300 per cent markup, accordng to Julan. "See ths watchband," he sad. " sell t for $35 and they charge $65." Julan sad a frend of hs who sold jewelry got nto trouble for sellng jewelry too cheap. "They (the dealers) broke n hs house and stole all hs Jewelry," he sad. The prce of turquose jewelry vares consderably. One bracelet cost Julan $65. He was sellng t for $20. A dealer he ran nto wanted $250 for the same bracelet, and he had t apprased at $325, he sad. Julan sad any proft he has made so far, he has put back nto the jewelry so he can have a wder selecton. " lke to see people have nce jewelry," he sad. "'ll usually sell t cheaper at jewelry partes when know no dealers are around." Julan lved n Florda for eght years and sold jewelry n Key West. He came up here so hs black Shepherd dog, Taggert Lee, could spend the wnter n the snow. Taggert s one of Julan's closest frends and he even rdes wth hm n the machnes he operates at work He was once offered $500 for hm and sad he was nsulted. "You can't put a prce on somethng that means thatmuch to you. don't care f they offered me $5,000," he sad. When Julan came back to ndana, he sad he ddn't want to sell any more Jewelry, but somehow he got back nto t. "t's really nterestng. You meet some really nce people," he sad. And some who aren't so nce, he added. Julan sad he gets propostoned sometmes; especally by women. 'They say, 'C'mon, you take trades, don't you?' But don't trade my jewelry for nothng,'' he sad. "See ths rng," sad Julan, holdng up a turquose Playboy bunny rng. "'ve been propostoned for ths rng.and t only sells for $5," he sad. A lot of people try to lft rngs, too, especally n the bars. " used to have strngs attached tothe rngs," he sad, "but rhateto do that. want to trust people so bad." Julan sad he hadn't had any trouble wth Eastern people stealng, but unfortunately he spoke too soon. About 0 mnutes later, one of the most expensve rngs turned up mssng. The good-natured salesman shook hs head and looked rather sad. "'ll Just haveto keep my eyes peeled. "Maybe they'll have a gulty conscous every tme they put t on," he sad. "The other resdents won't flush the tolets. Jantors won't put n tolet paper. Only two snks work, only one shower works and students vomt any place they choose and do not clean the mess up," he sad. He sad some Jantors dd not dsnfect that partcular shower room (the only place where he has taken a shower all semester). "The room was stll drty when took showers," he sad Fowler Jeffres, supervsor of dormtory custodal servces, sad students were sometmes to blame for jantors' nablty to get all jantoral work done durng the day. Some drectors sad the mads and Jantors had done outstandng work n ther partcular dormtores keepng the bathrooms clean. Mchael Julan dsplays hs turquose jewelry n the basement of the Powell Buldng.
