March 24th All Day Frontier Jazz Festival Sessions at FJH and GKHS 7:00pm Frontier Jazz Festival Concert FJH Commons Pierce County Sheriff s Department: reminder to use seat belts and child restraints. (Page 6& 7) The JROTC Unarmed Drill Team competed at Spanaway Lake High School and finished 2nd just 3 points behind former National Champions Washington High School. The team commander Captain Alex Buckingham did a great job commanding the team. Congratulations and great job everyone! WELCOME TO SPRING! Third quarter is halfway over and we are approaching the testing season. Please support your students in turning all assignments in on time and doing their best. THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS The Disgruntled Readers are the 2012 Winners. The team consists of Kristen Conrad, Lydia Rosenauer, Colette Rigby, and Becky Gundy. Team Yarkosky won the staff division. Team Gill was second place. The Disgruntled Readers have two members from last year's winning team. Lydia and Kristen were on last year's winning team. We had to go into a tiebreaker. Seven tiebreaker questions were used to determine the winner. The second place team was Enter an Awesome Name Here. The team consists of Jesse Moore, Diana Rosenlund, Kenny Laase, and Michael Fleming. Jesse and Diana were on the winning team last year. The third place team is The Dudes. The team consists of Kyle Lunt, Matthew Horton, Jonas Edwards, and Bayley Cope. They have been together since 4th grade and were Nelson's winning team last year. It was very close between the three teams. THE DISTRICT BATTLE IS NEXT THURSDAY AT LIBERTY JH AT 7:00 P.M. Come and cheer for the Disgruntled Readers! To log into the site you will need your students six digit I.D. number. Then go to the Frontier Jr. High home page, in the bottom right side you will see the "pay on line" tab. 4 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL: Frontier parents- Welcome to spring! Third quarter is halfway over and we are approaching the testing season. Please support your students in turning all assignments in on time and doing their best. We want students to be prepared for the state MSP test. Some Steps you can take to help your child be successful 1. Check Family Access grades frequently. This tells you your student's grades, attendance and missing assignments. You can call the school to get information on obtaining your password. 2. Check teacher SWIFT websites. These websites tell you about the assignments that students are working on and contain handouts. 3. Provide a quiet study place for your student and require they spend time each night doing homework, reading, or organizing their assignments. 4. Insist your student practice math concepts on Each student has a log in and password. This practice is essential for passing the MSP test. 5. Begin taking the MSP tutorials and learning how to use the online system. The online tutorial can be found at It is important students are familiar with each test they have to take. 8 LIBRARY NEWS The mission of the FJH school library is to ensure that students are effective users and producers of information and ideas. Battle of the Books Frontier Junior High Winners 1st Place: Disgruntled Readers - Kristen Conrad, Lydia Rosenauer, Colette Rigby, and Becky Gundy The Disgruntled Readers have two members from last year's winning team. Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen will replace When Zachary Beaver Came to Town as the 8th grade summer reading book. Flipped will be available in the ASB office in May for $4.50. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet That is the title selected for Pierce Country READS This book would be a good read for junior high age students and adults. The setting is Seattle during World War II. The story is told by a Chinese American boy who has become friends with a Japanese American girl. There are activities relating to the book throughout the month of March with the culminating activity being the author's talk and book-signing April 13, 7 p.m. at Clover Park Technical College. For more information go to Design a Bookmark Contest by Red Canoe Red Canoe Credit Union is celebrating National Library Week by holding a bookmark contest. The deadline is March 30, Winners will receive a donation to their favorite library and their bookmark will be printed and distributed at public libraries throughout the year. Mr. Korobkin and Mrs. Staley have entry forms. Library Activities: Mrs. Donovan's 7th grade Com/Arts Classes have been in the library for booktalks and checkout. Mrs. Donovan's 7th grade Ancient Civilization Classes are starting their Classroom Based Assessment. They completed a survey that was a pretest to see which skills they needed. They found a book source, gathered the bibliographic information, and found a quote from the book source. The classes will continue to visit the library to gather information needed to complete the CBA. Ms. Leggett's 9th grade Com/Arts Classes have started their research on the Elizabethan Era. They found a book source and completed the graphic organizer for their bibliography. Ms. Liebert's 7th grade Com/Arts Classes visited the library for booktalks and checkout. They have been encouraged to checkout a non-fiction book to prepare them for the MSP test. 9 From the Attendance Office PLANNED ABSENCES If your student has a planned absence coming up, a planned absence form must be filled out prior to the absence. It requires the student to talk with every teacher and presents the opportunity to get work ahead of time and keep those lines of communication open. Additionally, the form requires student and parent signature, as well as ADMINISTRATOR APPROVAL. Not all absences will be approved, depending on student grades, attendance, and overall standing. Please allow plenty of time for the form to circulate for approval. EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED? Please be aware of the following state-approved excused and unexcused reasons for absences: EXCUSED ABSENCES Sick / Injury Doctor appointment Dental appointment *Personal reasons Bereavement School-authorized Activities UNEXCUSED ABSENCES Slept late Missed the bus Car trouble / traffic Parent running behind Late ride or no ride *Excessive personal or family emergency absences will be subject to review with a counselor or administration. Absences can also cause a student to fail a class and be referred to the BECCA Bill. Thanks again, parents, for keeping us updated and sending in those notes when your student returns! ATTENDANCE: POWER OUTAGES & WEATHER On days when power is out or weather conditions cause a delay in the start of the school day, the district will excuse students who come in late with a note from parent or guardian. However, it will not be excused if the student is out for the entire day due to weather or power outages. The district provides bus transportation on late start days. Be aware of alternate but routes, which can be found on the district website.
