3 Page 3 Senior regent S MeSSage Hopewell Moose Family Center Welcome to a new year and brand new possibilities! How did we get to 2016 so quickly? It seems as though it was just summer, and then the holidays were upon us, and before you knew it the year was over. Speaking of holidays, what a busy month December was for all of us. Starting off with the WOTM & Legion Christmas Dance, to the Jr. Regent Christmas Dinner hosted by Madelyn (Kay) Collier, the Kids Christmas Party with Santa, chaired by Marie Matlock, our Senior Luncheon, to our final holiday event; our senior nursing home party with the residents. Thank you to ALL of our co-workers and dedicated volunteers for your efforts and time. Everyone deserves a big pat on the back for making these events happen. I know it s not always easy juggling personal, family, and job related commitments & activities with all of our volunteer events, especially during the busy holiday season. Thank you all, for devoting time to make our events special for all those involved. In just a few weeks, our Mid-Year conference will take place in Norfolk (January 22-24), and I hope to see many of you there. If you have never attended a conference, this is a great one to attend and learn more about our fraternal organization and gain insight and ideas from other lodges. We also have several Academy of Friendship matriculates who will be attending. Please join me in wishing them all continued success on their journey, and with the Women of the Moose. 8 Page 8 Golf News from the Pro Shop 2015 has been a great year for golf. I would like to express my appreciation to the board members, office workers and social quarters staff for the all the support that you have given to golf to make this a successful year. As you all know it takes TEAM work to make any event come together. The Massey Cancer Center tournament was a huge success and we plan on making it even bigger next year. We had the opportunity to go and represent the Hopewell Moose lodge in several tournaments: 51st International tournament in Henry County, Georgia where Butch Morris and Larry Almarode winning their flights. Virginia Moose State Tournament in Portsmouth, Virginia where Daryl Hurt won first place trophy and is in the golf showcase in the lodge. 51st International tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia where Larry Almarode and Daryl Hurt came in first place. Last but not least our 2nd annual fun filled Hopewell Moose members only golf outing, where Mark Marshall and Butch Morris took the trophy. We have started planning for 2016 and working on bringing the State Tournament back to the Hopewell Moose Lodge in September. Once again-thank you for your support. Golf Chairman, Butch Morris Fundraisers: Understanding the Numbers Dawn Ozmore The Women of the Moose would like to extend a huge Thank You to everyone that contributed to our biggest fundraiser of the year. With everyone s support, we raised over $2, during our Annual Holiday Bazaar. That money was raised by donations of specialty crafts, wreaths, home baked goods, and food sales. Our preparations started a month before the event, some co-workers worked at home & other coworkers worked in the pool house using craft items we supplied at no charge. Some co-workers did both. Depending on your skill or interest/time level, some opted to support by being responsible for the lunch that was sold during the event (chicken salad, homemade vegetable beef soup, potato salad & fruit). In addition, some helped by baking delicious desserts that was sold at the bake sale and working food prep: shopping, cleaning and serving. We extended our normal two-day sale over the course of a week, and even sold soup by the quart, and offered a blow-out sale on the final day of remaining items. There was an opportunity and need for each co-worker & chairwoman to assist with this project. Why is this fundraiser so important? The Women of the Moose, our chapter, only receives money from the fundraisers we hold. We don t receive money from Bingo, the bar, dinner service profits, or the V-Tabs or pull tab machines. Our monies are earned by fundraisers supported by you, our members. Many people don t realize that the WOTM send a monthly support check to both our Sunshine child A.J. at Mooseheart, and our Sunshine grandparent, Edward who resides at Moosehaven. Plus, we Con t. on Page 9.

9 Page 9 As 2015 comes to a close, the Hopewell Moose Legion is ready to hit the ground running in 2016! Con t. from Page 8.. are required to send in monthly amounts to Mooseheart & Moosehaven for special projects and needs that are set forth by International. In addition to that, we also help by donating to our community; people and organizations, our chapter expenses/bills, hosting our monthly Senior Birthday Party Celebrations, & our children s holiday parties. Then there s travel, hotel & food costs to send our selected co-workers to conferences: International, State and Mid-Year. I pay my dues, doesn t that offer enough support from my part? No. Actually, it doesn t. It helps, don t get me wrong, but it doesn t offer the financial support needed by our chapter. Here s why: For every Women of the Moose application & renewal that s submitted, our chapter receives just $3.00 from each one. Three dollars. Three dollars doesn t go far in today s economy, no matter how hard you try to stretch it. That is why fundraisers are so important for us. That is why we do so many fundraisers. That is why your continued support, means so much to us and our community. Would you like to learn more? Please attend a monthly meeting. We look forward to having you.

10 Page 10 Page 10 January 2016 THANK YOU to all who supported the Hopewell Moose Lodge s Third Annual Halloween Party!! We had an awesome turnout, and, with the Lodge s continued support, will only grow more and more each year. A special thanks goes out to Julie Andrews for her amazing decorations. The ballroom was transformed in such a way, many couldn t believe the outcome. Thank you to everyone who assisted Julie as well. Chip Cook kept the dance floor packed and did a fantastic job. We had a special guest in the house that night named Mike Rios. He is the Moose International Territorial Manager for our district. Earlier that day we had our District Meeting. Mike and his wife decided to come out for a bit and check out the party. A few minutes turned into most of the night. He was so impressed by the decorations, costumes and atmosphere, he and his wife got caught up in the festivities. A 50/50 was held and Mike Rios ended up winning. He donated it back to the Endowment Fund. A win for the lodge as well as Mooseheart. We had so many outstanding costumes that night, the judges had such a difficult time deciding the winners. We had a $500 1st place that went to Fred & Donna Kneifer and 2nd place went to The Spice Girls-Dawn Ozmore, April Johnson, and Teresa Hios. If you didn t make it this year you missed a night to remember!! Only your support can keep events such as this alive. Thanks again to all who attended. Darrell Johnson, Halloween Party Chairman ******************************************************** Thanksgiving 2015 Recap Thank you to all the volunteers who helped prepare, cook and clean for our Thanksgiving Lodge Feast. Special thanks to our LOOM for providing the turkeys and hams, and to the Mertz family for your kind generosity of donating an extra turkey to add to our dinner. To all the members that came and shared your delicious sweet treats and side dishes- Thank you, they were delicious! We had deep fried turkeys (thanks Darrell Johnson, Julie Andrews, & Wayne Andrews, a few trays of stuffing, string beans and 30 pounds of creamed potatoes (thanks Mary Coyle, Dawn Ozmore, Loretta Perry & Lindsay Keen). Plus so many side dishes from our members! Wilma Turner volunteered to work on the holiday, which permitted the bar to be open for our members and Jr. Governor Brian Carpenter blessed the food and the rest of the afternoon was spent eating, relaxing and watching football. We were humbly reminded of what the day meant, and what it means to truly to be thankful for what we have, when a man entered our lodge and quietly asked if we had any food. He was homeless, and explained that he had a meal and shelter for the night, but he could not enter that facility until 5 pm. He offered two dollars from his blue backpack that contained all the possessions he owned as payment for food. He was told to keep his money, and we fed him not one, but two heaping plates of food, plus a to-go box for later. And that is what Thanksgiving is all about. Being thankful for what you have, sharing what you have. For like John F. Kennedy said, One person can make a difference, and everyone should try. Dawn Ozmore
