2 Girls Inc. of Meriden Winter Program Brochure All program participants are required to have a 2017/2018 Girls Incorporated membership. The membership fee is $30 (non-refundable) and is valid through May Class fees and membership fees are due at the time of registration. If there is an outstanding balance it must be paid in full before registering for a new class. 3 After School Programs Monday Drama Mamas Time: 5:00-6:00pm Ages 6 & Up Fee: $50 If you like the stage and the spotlight, then this exciting class is for you! Girls will take this exciting class is for you! Girls will take command of the stage and be a true Broadway star! The girls will learn about all the aspects of a stage production through writing a short play, designing the costumes and a small set, and ending with a small performance for parents and friends! They will be learning a lot and having fun doing it! The class will be taught by a very experienced drama instructor, Miss Jean. Cooking Time: 6:00-7:00pm Ages 6 & Up Fee: $60 Are you a total foodie that loves to create and try all different kinds of things in the kitchen? Then this is the class for you! In this class girls will learn how to prepare ingredients, measure, clean-up, and other useful cooking tips. They will also create their own cookbook to take home at the end of the session with all of their recipes! Tuesday Memory Maker Time: 5:00-6:00pm Ages 7 & Up Fee: $50 Are you a girl who loves keepsakes and mementos of special times and occasions? Then this new class is for you! Girls will make memory boxes, mini scrapbooks, shadow boxes, and so much more, all of which they will keep and enjoy for a long time to come! Mother Daughter Fun Time: 5:00-6:00pm Ages 4-8 Fee: $25 per Mother/Daughter pair Calling all Mothers and Daughters this class is for you! In this fun class, Mothers and Daughters will come together for story time, crafts, no needle sewing, and so much more! In the end they will have some awesome craft projects and memories that they made together and can share forever! This class promotes Mother/Daughter bonding, reading, creativity, and a lot more. Animal Extravaganza Time: 6:00-7:00pm Ages 4-8 Fee: $50 Are you a girl that loves all things animal related? Then this art class is for you! Join us as we jump on a safari, go under the sea, or take a walk through the jungle and meet all kinds of cute animals along the way! Each week girls will learn some fun facts about the animal of the day and then make an awesome craft they can take home and play with!
4 After School Programs continued..tuesday Crazy Cranium Time: 6:00-7:00pm Ages 8 & Up Fee: $25 Get ready to put your brains to work! In this class girls will be solving brain busters and riddles, having minute-to-win-it challenges, creating mad-libs and one of a kind creations that will really work their brains, and so much more! This class will help to exercise your brain in a fun and exciting way! Time: 6:00-7:00pm Mother Daughter Bath and Body Class No one is more deserving of a spa day than our Moms! In this new class, Mothers and Daughters will learn together all the ways in which they can pamper themselves! They will be creating soaps, facial scrubs, bath bombs, lip balms, and so much Mother Daughter time together. Ages 8 & Up Fee: $60 per Mother Daughter pair more all while spending quality Girl Power Hour Time: 7:00-8:00pm Ages 8 & Up Fee: $50 Now, more than ever, we need girls to feel empowered and confident. Here at Girls Inc., it is our mission to inspire all girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold, and this class will do just that! Girls will learn all about women empowerment, hear about positive role models, self-esteem, positive feelings towards themselves and others and so much more all while doing fun crafts and projects! Wednesday Art for Beginners Time: 5:00-6:00pm Ages 6 & Up Fee: $50 In this art class, girls will learn some basic art techniques from a trained artist and someone our girls know and love- Miss Jean! They will work with water colors and learn basic brush strokes, how to mix different colors, and so much more! After they master all of the techniques they will create a masterpiece on canvas at the end of the session and possibly uncover the budding Picasso or Renoir inside of them! Cheerleading Time: 6:00-6:30pm Ages 7 & Up Fee: $50 In this class girls will learn basic cheerleading skills, stunts, and tumbling! Our recreational cheerleading program offers an opportunity for girls to learn new skills and master new challenges in a safe, fun, and educational setting with highly trained and experienced staff.
5 After School Programs continued..wednesday evamped! Creative Writing Time: 7:00-8:00pm Ages 10 & Up Fee: Free Girls will work in groups and alone to enhance their writing skills with many fun activities such as prompts, free style, poems, and more. We will also be focusing on creating a book from our work and becoming illustrators! Girls will use the computer lab to type out and print their work and then use their creativity to decorate a fun and exciting cover and illustrations for the work they will be putting in their book. This way girls can cherish and share their work for a long time to come! Holiday Giving Opportunity Every year during the holiday season, Girls Inc. partners with the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford in the Share the Wonder program. Share the Wonder is an opportunity for Girls Inc. families in need, to receive Christmas gifts donated from the community. Participation in the program is by invitation only, and identities are kept confidential. If you'd like to help make someone's holiday brighter this year, please stop by the Westfield Shopping Center Mall and check out the United Way Christmas Tree. The trees will have gift tags with the wishes of the Share the Wonder participants. All wish items that are donated should be unwrapped and will be given to those families in time for the Christmas holiday. This is a great community giving program and we hope that you'll take advantage of helping those in need
6 After School Programs continued..wednesday There's No I In Team Time: 6:30-7:30pm Ages 7 & Up Fee: Free Often in sports, girls feel like they have to outshine everyone else to be noticed and appreciated for their talents. But in this super fun and free program, girls learn to work together and cheer each other on through a wide variety of team sports. They will make great friends, build confidence in themselves, and learn how to be an awesome teammate! This class is sure to put the team spirit spark in all of them! Thursday Yarnify Time: 5:00-6:00pm Ages 7 & Up Fee: $50 This new class is all about one thing-yarn! Girls will learn how to finger knit, make pom poms, ornaments, room décor, and so much more, all while using yarn. Join us and get ready to get creative and have so much fun doing it! Little Chef's Snacks Time: 6:00-6:45pm Ages 4-6 Fee: $50 In this exciting class the little chef s get their chance to shine! Girls will learn the basics of the kitchen such as measuring, stirring, cleaning up and much more! They will also be filling their cookbooks up with some delicious snack recipes they will make and eat in class but then can also try at home! Savvy Sewing Time: 6:00-7:00pm Ages 7 & Up Fee: $50 Whether you want to be a fashion designer or you just want to sew a rip in your clothes, sewing is such a wonderful skill to have! In this class girls will be learning how to sew from an experienced instructor- both by hand and by machine! They will be making beautiful and one of a kind pieces that are both decorative and functional! Sweet Treats Time: 6:45-8:00pm Ages 7 & Up Fee: $50 If you have a sweet tooth and love to bake, then this is the class for you! Girls will make delicious and unique desserts using new techniques in baking and decorating. They will work with chocolate, cakes, and so much more to learn how to make decadent desserts they will love. They will even create their own cookbook to take home at the end of the session with all their recipes! 7 National Identity Programs Girls Inc. National Identity Programs are designed to enable young women to learn new information, acquire and develop new skills, build self-confidence, and most importantly have fun! These classes are offered FREE of charge to any member who signs up for any other After School Program Operation SMART Ages 6 & Up Mondays from 7:00-8:00pm Fee: Free Explore the world of science in a fun, all girl program that encourages girls to get messy and learn new things using hands-on activities. We will conduct experiments, play games, and discover cool careers for women with activities you won t see in the average classroom. Mindy+Body Ages 7 & Up Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00pm Fee: Free Class will run for 7 weeks Running: 1/31/18-3/14/18 It is important at all ages to eat well and to get up and get moving! In this exciting seven-week program, girls will learn how to have healthy bodies and positive body image through self-esteem and nutrition workshops, and through physical activity. They will do zumba, yoga, bootcamp, partners and many more! This class will be taught by student athletes from Quinnipiac University and is sure to be a blast! Strong, Smart, and Bold Fun Ages 8 & Up Fee: Free Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00pm At a certain age, girls interest in STEM classes starts to fall. Here at Girls Inc., we believe in the importance of STEM learning for our girls and their futures. In this class, girls will have fun learning about science experiments, economic literacy, media literacy, games, and more! Each week will be hands on and different so that nothing gets too stale or boring for them. Forensic Science Ages 8 & Up Fee: Free Thursdays from 6:00-7:00pm Girls Inc. is all about making science and STEM programming fun and accessible for girls. In this exciting class, girls will learn all about the world of forensics- which is when you use science to collect information and to solve crimes. Girls will become mini forensic detectives as they learn how to collect fingerprints, decode secret messages, follow clues and so much more!
8 Dance Programs Tuesday Dance is offered to girls ages 2 and up. Winter session is your last opportunity to sign up for our dance program. No new dancers will be allowed to register after the middle of January. Preparations for the dance recital in June have begun. Any dancer taking two 1/2 hour classes will be charged a special rate of $70. 10 Gymnastics Programs Monday Recreational Classes Our gymnastic program offers an opportunity for girls to learn new skills and master new challenges in a safe, fun, and educational setting with highly trained, certified staff. Beginners A Age: 5-8 Time: 5:00-6:00pm Fee: $70 Beginners B Age: 9 & up Time: 6:00-7:00pm Fee: $70 Intermediate Must have at least 2 year of gymnastic experience. Gymnasts will be evaluated by the coaching staff to determine level placement. Invite only. Age: 7 & up Time: 7:00-8:00pm Fee: $70 saturday Beginners A Age: 5-8 Time: 9:00-10:00am Fee: $70 Tiny Tumblers Age: 3 & 4 Time: 10:00-10:30am Fee: $50 For girls who are ready to begin learning basic gymnastics skills Beginners B Age: 9 & up Time: 10:30-11:30am Fee: $70 Intermediate Must have at least 2 year of gymnastic experience. Gymnasts will be evaluated by the coaching staff to determine level placement. Invite only. Age: 7 & up Time: 11:30am - 12:30pm Fee: $70
11 Gymnastics Programs Competitive Team We are proud to offer girls the opportunity to participate in competitive gymnastics. We have a long standing tradition in competitive gymnastics and awesome coaching staff to help the girls reach their greatest potential. We compete in AAU, giving our gymnasts a higher level and more gyms to compete with. Bronze Level Age: 6 & up Team Fee: $215 By evaluation only. Will compete in most meets during the competitive season. Practice is 5 hours a week: Tuesdays & Thursdays 5:00-6:30pm Saturdays 12:30-2:30pm Silver, Gold, and Platinum Levels Age: 6 & up Team Fee: $250 By evaluation only. Includes home and away meets through the competitive season. Practice is 6 hours a week: Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00-8:00pm Saturdays 12:30-2:30pm Coach Sharon Coach Sharon Gostkowski has been teaching gymnastics for over 15 years. She has a USAG Professional Membership, is USAG Safety Certified, KAT (USAG) Certified, and MEDLP (USAG) Certified.
12 Teen Leadership Programs Leaders in Training and Junior Leaders Our leadership groups are split up into two groups Junior Leaders and Leaders in Training. The LIT program will serve as a stepping stone to Junior Leaders. Both groups will help the girls to develop the leaders within themselves and will allow them to take an active role in Girls Inc. and in the community. Girls will participate in weekly meetings that will focus on developing communication and leadership skills, team building activities, and life skills and pressures they may be facing in everyday life situations such as drugs, alcohol, sex, violence and other emotional topics at an age appropriate level. Girls in both groups will be asked to volunteer for various community and Girls Inc. events throughout the school year. To attend the special end of the year trip, girls must have completed a minimum of 30 volunteer hours. The two groups will meet separately, but will come together for a half hour each week to go over scheduling, volunteer hours, fundraising and more. evamped! 13 Girls Inc. On The Move... Girls Inc. transports girls afterschool in our organizational fifteen passenger van from the following schools: Lincoln Middle School, Washington Middle School, Thomas Edison, Nathan Hale, Israel Putnam, and Roger Sherman. Weekly Fee: $50.00 (Must also have a current membership $30.00) Time: Afterschool - 5:30 p.m. Girls Inc. will provide daily: homework assistance, snack, and fun daily programming utilizing the facility and National Programs focused on Science, Health & Wellness, Economic Literacy and much more in an all girl environment. To inquire more about how to register your child for this great opportunity contact Girls Inc. today at ! Program will start on the first day of school, Monday, August 28th. On holidays, school vacations, half-days, days off, and snow days the program will be closed.
14 H o l i d a y F a m i l y F u n N i g h t Our annual Holiday Family Fun Night hosted by our Leaders in Training and Junior Leaders is right around the corner! The office is open 9am - 3pm It is the policy of Girls Incorporated of Meriden to follow the Meriden School Systems calendar for classes. If a class is canceled due to the school calendar the organization does not make the class up. As well, if a class is canceled due to weather related issues the policy of Girls Inc. is that we do not make up the class as it is considered an act of nature. However, if a class is canceled due to an instructor cancelation the class will be made up at the discretion of Girls Inc., the instructor, and available space in the building. At least one week's notice will be provided to announce the make up class.
