5 How to Host a Team Kick-Off Party... A Team Kick-Off Party is the perfect way to begin a successful race season. You won t find a better opportunity to motivate, inspire and energize your friends, family, and co-workers to join you in the fight against breast cancer. Here are some tips and instructions to get you started. 1. Plan your party Pick a date and a venue for your event. Host it at a home, restaurant, community center, etc. Make sure you have at least one computer with internet access so your guests can register to join your team or make donations online instantly. Make your guest list and send out invitations. Invite as many people as possible! Make it clear that the party is about raising money for the cause. Prepare for the party. Make copies of your team donation and paper registration forms, plan the food, have plenty of pens on hand so people can fill out the forms and prepare any entertainment and/or your presentation. Educate yourself on the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure so you can provide your guests with an understanding of how the funds raised through the Race for the Cure are spent and what this cause is all about. 2. At the Party Talk a little about your and/or your team s personal commitment to the cause and reasons for participating. Then, give guests time to decide if they want to join your team or make a donation. If your guests do not wish to join your team online, they will need to fill out and sign a paper registration form. However, encourage folks to register online since they will have a Participant Center to fundraise with and be eligible for our great fundraising rewards. Provide fundraising cards with your team information to take home for those who do not donate or join your team at the event. Thank everyone for coming and let them know what your fundraising goal is. 3. After the Party Mail check only donations and registration forms immediately to the address on the team donation form. Send thank you notes to those who donated and joined your team. Follow up with those who could not attend. Call or send an with a link to your team fundraising Web page. Other Team Fundraising Ideas What kind of activities do you and your team members do for fun? Baking. Dog Walking. Dancing. Think of a way to have some fun and turn it into a fundraiser. Here is a list of some great team fundraising ideas: Community Yard Sale Bake Sale Car Wash Raffle Ticket Sales Concession Food/Drink Sales (at local sporting events) Karaoke Night

6

7 Fun-Raising Ideas... Team Yard Sale G e t yo u r Te a m to g e t h e r o n a Saturday and hold a yard sale. Have each team member search their garage, attic and closets for all of their used and unwanted items, slap a price tag on them and sell, sell, sell!! Donate all of the profit from the day to your Race Team. A yard sale is also a great opportunity to have a bake sale. You can even have a Race Registration area where people can join your team and register for the Race! Forget-Me-Knots Tie a pink ribbon on your potential donors fingers and ask them not to remove it until they have made a donation. When someone does make a donation, give them a pink ribbon that they can proudly pin on their shirt, showing everyone their commitment to finding the cures. Go Green for Pink Save all your aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles with redemption values. Ask your employer if you can set up a recycle bin in your office. Spread the word about your green venture to your extended family and neighbors. Post flyers around your community asking people to place their bottles and cans out for you to collect. Take your loot to your local recycling center, trade them in and put the cash toward your fundraising goal. Share Your Skills Teach someone yoga, golf, knitting, cooking, tennis, beading, scrap-booking, etc. Inform your student that the cost of the lesson will go toward your involvement in the Race for the Cure. If they enjoyed the session, tell them to invite their friends for group lessons. Sweet Tooth Days Everyone has a sweet tooth! Go to Costco or Sams and purchase a box of your favorite candy. Set it on your desk at work. When people ask if they can have one, tell them they have to join your team or make a donation to the Race. Better yet, have a bake sale at work. Cook up your best cookies, brownies and tasty treats and sell them for a donation or give them to people who join your Team. 50/50 Fundraiser A 50/50 Fundraiser is possibly the simplest way to raise funds for your Team. Buy a roll of tear-apart tickets and sell each ticket at a fixed price such as $1.50, $5, or even $10. Give the purchaser half of the ticket and put the other half in a bucket or box. When it comes time to draw a winner, the prize for the bearer of the winning ticket is half of the funds raised through ticket sales. The other half is donated toward your Team goal. You can hold a 50/50 Fundraiser anywhere! If you work in an office, have a 50/50 Fundraiser every week leading up to the Race by selling tickets Monday-Thursday and drawing a winner every Friday. The possibilities are endless! Team T-Shirt Contest Hold a t-shirt design competition and charge a fee for each design entered. Make sure everyone is aware that the color pink is reserved for Survivors and that they should not use our Race logo. Then have all employees/members vote - with dollars - for their favorite design. The entry with the most votes becomes your team s t-shirt for this year. Cookies for the Cure Bake Sale Host a bake sale at your place of w o r s h i p, w o r k, s c h o o l o r o t h e r organization. Ask a local bakery to donate a batch of pink breast cancer ribbon-shaped cookies in order to promote the cause. Another option is to bake cupcakes and leave them in your company break room. Include a note about your involvement in the race and a donations greatly appreciated jar next to the treats. March Madness Set up a bracket challenge and invite friends, family & co-workers to play with a donation of $10 per bracket entered. Duck for a Cure Instead of bombarding your co-workers with yet another candy or magazine f u n d r a i s e r, i n t r o d u c e a f u n a n d innovative approach to utilizing your resources at the office. Purchase rubber duckies from The Oriental Trading company and place them in a basket. Take them to work, asking if anyone would like to adopt a duck for the cure. Charge $2 or $5 per duck.

8 Team T-Shirts... Creating your own, one of a kind custom shirt for your team is a great way to stand out among the crowd and show team unity on Race Day. In designing your shirt, we ask that you not use the Komen Race logo and please don t outfit your team in pink t-shirts, as pink is reserved for Survivors. We are excited to announce that we are once again offering our top teams the option of using our Official Komen Team Insignias. These honor badges will allow your team to show off their commitment and dedication to the Komen Southern Nevada Race for the Cure. Please read through the qualifications below and if your team is eligible, contact the Komen Office at or info@komennevada.org to request the Insignia artwork.
